This story is about innocent love between the higher school teens .. its development and consequences they faced and about a caretaking teacher who put them in right path ..
As far as music of this film - When its ilaiyaraja especially in the early eighties amalgamation of western classical with Indian classical and Raaga based ( this song is of Raaga simmendra madhyamam ) tunes or melody is to be sure.
If its possible get a clear copy of this film's songs and you will surely enjoy the composition. 🎉

For future reference: One suggestion is to play the audio version available on Ilaiyaraja's official RUclips channel (conveniently named 'Ilaiyaraja Official') for high-fidelity version of any of Raaja sir's songs when fans share a video of the songs from the movie. This way you get the best of both worlds: you can watch the visuals from the actual movie to glean the context and yet be able to hear the best audio version of the song from Ilaiyaraja's official channel. The preludes and interludes from Raaja sir's songs deserve to be heard in high-fidelity :)
This song was composed in the carnatic raaga Simhendramadyamam by Ilayaraja. Ilayaraja made carnatic music simple for the massed. Listen and review the song Madai thiranthu from movie Nizhalgal. Absolute fusion of western symphony pop and folk.

Watch from 3:57 to 4:30 which is like a western classical music played by a symphony orchestra this is where Ilaiyaraaja's composition is very different from others. Wherever possible Ilayaraaja will fit in this kind of western classical composition pieces in his songs.
