- Tom had the opportunity to record Juergen Reis, Chief Engineer of MBL give a talk to an audience at the 2024 Munich High-End Expo. In his talk, Juergen explains how the MBL 101 X-Treme Mk II speakers are designed. However, much more can be learned about speakers generally, from Juergen's discussion of the 101's.

I personally can listen to him because I like physics and acoustics and high end audio but I guess this industry needs younger audiences which I am pretty sure they will get bored. One needs animations to transfer all this knowledge to the younger audiences and even to a soon to be 55 years old like me who is in this beautiful industry both professionally and personally for half a century.
It is a good suggestion regardless of viewer age and we are working on this.
If the speakers are omnidirectional, why are they toed in?
Two possibilities: it looks more normal and/or it may minimize reflection from the structural posts. But Juergen at one point acknowledges that customers like to place speakers based partly on appearance.
@@thomasmartin2219 Thanks for the reply.
Tom: Difficulty in understanding Mr. Reis.
I think we’ll have a transcript when we post this on the TAS web site.
"We aren't supplied with full measurement suites." Yes, that's a problem, but surely the way to fix it is for those who review speakers to do independent measurements themselves and (most importantly) learn how to interpret the results properly.
Throwing your hands up in the air and saying 'We don't know' won't get us anywhere.
Thomas, you visited Munich?
Yes indeed!
I did a summary on this channel.
@@thomasmartin2219 Great! 😃
I have never heard so many reasons why his speakers will sound bad in your room. I was interested in these speakers but not now. He even admits good sound is just a crap shoot.
Sorry if I wasn’t clear that almost everything Juergen talks about applies to ALL speakers in real rooms. I believe he is trying to provide a set of parameters that listeners need to address to avoid problematic results. The intent is the opposite of a crap shoot and more like a game where you have to know and follow the rules to win. Hope that helps. We will collect these and other setup guidelines into a how-to video at some point (still collecting the parameters).
