How Do Boat Engine Hours Affect Used Boat Value

- When buying a boat it is good to know how boat engine hours affect the used boat value. Always ask how many hours the engine has on it and don't forget to drive it before you sign on the dotted line - no exceptions! Sean talks about engine hours, what are some problems to watch out for, and why most times we think hours are too high when they really aren't. In this video:

Check compression. Takes a $20 tool and a wrench. If compression is good, engine is clean and everything works then there is not much you can guess at. You can try to go by hours, but unless they are excessive you have no idea if the boat spent those hours at full throttle blasting along never getting an oil change, or simply cruising at 1500 rpm with oil changes 3 times a year. Buying a used boat with no warranty is a risk. I can blow out an engine in 100 hours, or make the same engine last 3,000+ hours.
Thank you SO much for such great information. I had no idea what engine hrs meant. Much appreciated
Really solid, practical advice
This was very informative. Thank you . The worst thing you can do to a boat is not to use it. Especially one that is kept in the water.
Your videos are well done and help me out thanks
1984 Yamaha 150 bought new and has over 2000 hours on it. Still running strong.
Valuable advice.
I always appreciate your advice 👍
Our pleasure and thank you for saying so Walter!
The best bite size boat videos on RUclips.
Wow Ryan, that is high praise, thank you!!
How would I change the oil in an in board out board
Nice job
Thank you my frıend very beautiful video and extra sea lover lesson Take care
Our pleasure!
Can Merc 7.4L on 1992 boat still show compression of 150 to 160...engines are in 1250 hours?
I'm not sure 100 hrs = 4000km 'car miles' is high enough. By that logic, your 2000 hours before rebuild would mean you expect a car to only go 80k before needing a rebuild. My personal opinion is that 100 hours is closer to 8000 kilometers. This matches modern car engine oil change intervals and would put the engine at 160k 'car kilometers' (100k miles) for a rebuild. That seems to add up a more more accurately to me.
Would you consider buying a car that had let's say 50,000 miles on it, but it pulled a trailer all the time in the mountains? Remember a marine engine never goes downhill it's always uphill under load. It is why I bought a boat with a diesel engine in it.
@@MountainFisher That's irrelevant to the point I think. He is comparing hours to miles for the point of a comparison metric to the every-day guy or gal. That's why his hour estimation (2000) for a rebuild is so low - that would be VERY low hours for a car, but to your point a marine engine is always working, so from an hours perspective, they don't last as long. So what he's trying to do here then, is compare hours to miles, so people can think in every-day terms, how many is too many. I would argue that 100k miles (160k) kilometers is more accurate 'rebuild' territory for a vehicle used in high-load conditions. Also consider that the average marine engine spends over 50% of its hours at idle-rpm speed.
But hey there is no such thing has hours-to-miles so this is all just opinion anyway :)
so a suzuki df 200 with 7000 hours would translate into 560 000 ?
@@thomastirolflorida5363 LOL diesel engine, well maintained even in the 70s lasted 10,000 hours. No exaggeration, good diesels like Volvo's or Cummins.
@@thomastirolflorida5363 Diesel is a totally different topic LOL. Those things go much further, as they do as well in the automobile world!
I don't have an hour meter. So, how can I tell how hours are on my boat and 5.7 mercury
Hi there, you failed to differ the engine hour on a two stroke, 4 stroke gas engine, versus a diesel engine, can you comment on this? Tks!
I don’t have enough real data on 2 vs. 4 stroke for engine longevity. The two stroke is more prone to early failure because of it’s lack of precision control systems (IMO). Diesels can run for 1000s more hours than gas for sure because of how heavily built they are and lower RPM they run
It is how much it is run but how often it is run.
Boat engines don't wear out. They rust out.
What areas of an inboard/outboard would be telltale signs of rust? Not a gear head. Thanks.
Ummm, no... Not on the lake they don't. And not if they have closed coiling and never had salt water in them.
@@dand2781 depends if its closed cooling or not.
Engine hour gauges can easily be changed/replaced, to trick an unsuspecting buyer.
I have a 2006 Key West Center Console with a 140 Suzuki 4 stroke, last year i was wondering how many hrs were on the motor since i dont have a digital guage, it runs off the RPM guage when u turn the key 1 notch, taking a guess at the time, i assumed about 1000 hours, much to my suprise it was just at 500, im on Long Island NY, and i feel like i use my boat a ton, i guess not, i bought it brand new.....
now you can do your oil change every 100 hrs
What about a boat with a brand new engine? Is it always a good deal? Once you change the engine on an inboard does it affect other parts?
I appreciate your patience and this is not an easy question to answer. There are two many factors to make a 👍👎 call
Crusader 8.1 is that a good engine or problem child?
Depends on how it was maintained. Crusaeder is the best of gasoline engines.. 2 models of the 8.1 385hp and 425hp. Both are great its a 496 big block Chevy
That's a great question.
A boat is worth heaps when it's new, and nothing when it's used.
May as well use it to it stops chooching.
Hours per year is what's important.
You hit the snail on the sled. Low use is mechanical abuse.
what about a boat with two engines?
"An average boating season in our area might be 30-50 hours" Heres me in southern Ontario, had my Sea Doo 5 weeks and it has 60 hours on it.
You need a 70 series LandCruiser mate it will get 300000 km + used very hard
I hear that! Well built vehicles?
@@boatinglessons yes it's not a joke they will do that. No rebuild
I sell my trailer and hull for $ 5000 and my engine for $10000 so it is all about engine
I traded a seven year old boat, with 700 hours on it, for $8, 000.00 more than I paid for it. Figure that one out.
You found a sucker. Congrats!
Covid and bidenomics
Watch this video at 1.5x speed! Thank me later 😉
My voice is not funny enough? ;)
Kilometers?…Please give miles
Asking most boat owners how many hours is like asking a date how many guys she slept with?
She said 8... so 8x5 = 40 actual
Just like a car, too many hours per year, or too few hours per year spell "Bend Over And Take it" or "Bring Out Another Thousand or way more" BOAT for short.
An informed buyer knows that balance.
Statistics Just in indicate that 0.5 percent of 1 percent of boat buyers appreciate how it works. Yet 2 percent of 5 percent of car buyers get the idea.
Under use over time is actually worse!
Who knew?
Play this at x1.5 speed
Your welcome
Does it make my voice funny? ;-)
I'm not going to watch this. But the more hours your boat engine has on it the less it's worth.
Then why even comment. I suspect you would prefer the 10 year old motor that’s still on its first oil change.
@2:56 2000hrs is ok? thats a load of crap. this is misleading info. most charter guys sell their engines at around 1000hr because they want to avoid issues.
