@Andrew Leonidas Thanks for your reply. I found the site thru google and im trying it out now. Takes a while so I will get back to you later with my results.
I wouldn't call myself a professional outboard mechanic but I work on my own stuff. You sir have one of the best outboard ch on RUclips. I've learned a lot. Knowledge is power. Thanks for the power brother
My 1st comment was before I watched the entire video... So now; Once again, you have provided an encyclopedic amount of useful information information in just nine minutes... Thank you!
I've definitely gone to only burning Rec 90, I feel better about cleaning up my engine now. I try to slow shift but in a tight spot sometimes you just have to shift faster that you should? I run my boat all year long but she does sit a bit more in the winter. I stabilize the fuel left in the tank and try to top off the tank before it sits to reduce the surface area open to oxidation and vaporization. Just ran her in a parade on the lake last night in Georgia! Time for plugs and wires....
Fyi no amount of flushing the early 2000 225 4 stroke Yammys would prevent the corrosion in the exhaust manifold as fresh water does not flow in that manifold. This was a defect in the Yamaha metallurgy at the time. If not caught early enough this would ruin the midsection to block interface.
Great video once again.. I fish in freezing weather up here in the north and it sometimes gets tough to clean off all the salt.. I do my best when I get home. I only stop running my boat for 3 months Jan,Feb,and March.. I change my oil every 50hrs and it's black. Gear oil every 100. I think it's better to change oil in spring because moisture can build in oil over the winter months. Theres so many people who winterize in the fall and do oils at the same time.. who knows.. anyway love you're videos and thank you for the time you take to make them.
Awesome! Thank you for your support. You know that's something to think about with the condensation and water building :) it's crazy the different things that you can see from different locations!
There is so much too know. I'm in my early 60's and bought my first boat last summer. Certainly wish I lived near you guys instead of the center of Kansas. You are a wealth of knowledge. And I thank you for sharing.
I use my boat in salt water. It always gets washed and flushed at the end of the day, no matter what. I was using saltaway after every trip, so I guess it was a bit of overkill.
I live in Memphis TN. but run 3 Yamaha Jetskis and I have 2007 Macgregor 26 powersail boat with a 50 hp Yamaha outboard 4 stroke. I take them to Pennsacola FL a lot or to any lake that I can find. I love my Yamaha, their reliable on the water. Question do I need to change my oil on my boat motor if I didn’t use it any doing the yr. or lower unit oil ?
Awesome! No, if you had changed it previously or checked it to make sure there wasn't any water in the gear lube and then didn't use it since you checked. You don't need to change it :)
Yamalube ring free question. I have a 1996 Yamaha 225 2 stroke and was wondering if I should add Yamalube ring free every time I fill up at the Marina or every so often? Love your videos, very informative!
Rebuild the fuel pump once a year, change the lower unit lube and spark plugs every fall. Spray 3-in-on oil into each cylinder and turn over the engine a few times before putting the engine away for the winter. Do all this and your outboard will outlast you,
ACTUAL SALT IN THE AIR; I googled it and there is salt content in sea air? I wondered how significant THAT IS, regarding, EFI and or Carburetors, when running engines in salt water venues? 1473.4 F, evaporates salt or (800.8 C). A healthy "cooling system" on an outboard thermostats Out at; 140F to 160F. Therefore, those salty carbon molecules aren't going anywhere? Certainly the exhaust baffles run much hotter but that process takes place long after the salt content mixes with the fuel? food for thought.
I do all that, and more! You can eat wet scrambled eggs off my engine! And NO MORE EVER on that dumb 'zuki' flusher. In a tub, run after every trip, up to temp! to combat the Fuel cooler from getting stopped up, AGAIN. All maintenance done by me, top to bottom. Every 4-6 months a run of rydlyme, thru it...helps get rid of the mud, too.
Being hooked to this channel for a while, it is no doubt the best out there in terms of explaining everything in a very professional but simple manner, looking forward for next Tuesday. #yamaha
Changing the lowers so the props turn in will create lift on certain boats and set up's not all set up will benefit from this and will lose mph and burn more fuel it's a trial type of thing
Thank you for your detailed explanations in your videos! I recently replaced our '05 mercury Optimax 150's on our family boat with mercury twin 2019 150 four-strokes. It's a much better experience. The DFI oil was killing us. The oil is about $45/gallon retail - $33 or so a gallon online if you catch a sale. Our boat used to hold about 5 gallons of 2 stroke oil. I have always loved 2 strokes, but for running offshore the mercury 150 four strokes work better for us. We were burning close to 4 gallons on a typical canyon trip out of Indian River, DE with the Optimax's. I have followed the 150 four stroke since 2011. But, your videos helped my family decide that the 150 four strokes were the way to go for us. The maintenance is super easy too! Thank You! Mark Wiebner and Family Indian River, DE New Holland, PA
Going down to Yamaha school in January always a good time down their. We have started to see the mid section problem on 3.3 250’s. 2008 being the newest one that we have seen rot out to date .
Awesome! Yes, it is nice up there! Really, that's pretty uncommon to see on that late of a model, and a 250 at that! It happens though lol its sad when it goes so far and eats through the powerhead from the cooling passage to the oil passage :*(
Born Again Boating yea definitely. We have had power heads welded with great success saving the customer big bucks but it does require removing the heads and electronics so it can be surfaced. But still comes in way lower then a new power head.
My friend, really any 150 will be a great choice, but idk what your boat package is, because the one thing to note is that you will be going from a V-6 2-Stroke to an inline 4 cylinder which will have an effect on the performance of the boat
Hahahah I wonder how much they pay :) I don't really want to live where it gets to 20 degrees though :( it was one morning and I had to scrap the ice off the windshield! Not for me lol Good to hear from you too!
@@BornAgainBoating Great thanks. My 99' Honda is still going strong but must be on borrowed time after 20+ years of year round use in salt so I'm starting to look for a replacement. Regarding the Yamaha F225 corrosion issue, is it not true that no amount of flushing will prevent these engines from consuming themselves? @@milkylicker6963 Well, perhaps. No other engines seem to have this issue and they all burn Ethanol. And back to my statement, the corrosion occurs well above where cooling water enters the exhaust. Funny how no one at Yamaha seems to acknowledge this fact.
bravo - do you believe working on lower unit rebuilt can be done by most dealers or it is a delicate job that can be done by few. on a scale of to 10 being very difficult what would you rate it.
Yes, most dealers should be able to work on a lower, but as far as rebuilding one. It depends on what you are trying to do. With the expense it costs in hours for shop labor. A lot of times, because it is a time consuming project, it's not worth rebuilding a lower unit because you can find a used one or buy a replacement lower for about the same price. So it really depends on what you are trying to do.
I heard that some techs tend to go for a lean mix when building racing engines , why would they ? Afaik a lean condition is great for eficiency but if someone is trying to reach the max of a particular engine , they should go for a rich mix , right ?
Running slightly lean often makes best power, and they really don’t worry about the damage front running lean because race engines are usually serviced much more frequently than your average engine and maximum life and longevity aren’t as much of a concern as maximum power is. Kinda like a top fuel dragster engine is torn down and rebuilt after every 1000’ pass. But your daily driver car can go thousands of miles without service. Although top fuel cars are run extremely rich to the point of “dieseling” and nearly hydrolocking as they also use their fuel to moderate cylinder temperatures.
That's awesome! a 78 lol :) the boat that has this merc on it had a 2 stroke Suzuki on it before, he had about 8K on it too :) we'll see if this merc gets that high lol
My in-laws have an old 80s Johnson 35 two stroke that was sitting in the dirt for who knows how long. I managed to get it to kick over after dribbling some fuel in it. Still needs the carb and the fuel pump rebuilt but I imagine it'll be a solid motor after that.

@@BornAgainBoating It's good to hear that point of view. My F300 is doing it and the Marina where I purchased it said it probably wasn't broken in correctly and the rings didn't seat. @@georgematos1086 you know that's possible. I've not heard of anyone that used it having a problem. But most people I know that have used WD are on two strokes. I guess if you use too much of it, it could have an affect on the wires. Sorry @J Sails stick to the dry silicone, yamashield, or shine products :/

dave smith... the only tractor I know anything about driving was my grandfathers 1980 John Deere 850. It had two gear shifters which gave you a lot of gear ratios to pick from, but you had to come to a complete stop to pick the gears you wanted. I think when my dad is putting my boat in gear, he thinks the gears will eventually stop moving like it does in a tractor.
Well, you won't be able to without hooking it up to a computer that is registered with a Yamaha dealer :( Good thing is that the engine does store the hours. Maybe call a local dealer and see if you can swing by with your boat and pay them for 15 minutes of time to hook it up and give you the hours :)
Consider upgrading to Yamaha digital tachometer (loads on eBay) - it will remind you when your engine is due for a service. Furthermore depending on which model your engine is you might be able to monitor oil pressure, engine temperature and voltage - which can assist in detecting engine issues early.
It was good, it's always nice to get around other techs and here about stuff going on across the industry. As well as talk to the tech support guys, the instructors, and play around with the bugged engines :)
Great Video, I have a 2007 200hp Verado and I was wondering what the baseline readings for water pressure, oil pressure and temp would be on the smartcraft gauges should be so I can monitor this.
Thank you and awesome! That's a 6 cylinder 200 right? Your water pressure will vary at idle down to 1 psi sometimes but usually around 1.5 or 2 or so, then at wide open it can get all the way up to like 16 or 18 sometimes higher! Oil pressure should stay above 60 psi at wide open it can get up to 80 or higher. Then the oil temp I'm not 100% sure on, but it'll be in the 200's.

Born Again Boating I heard that wd was bad cause it had petroleum based stuff ? So I use silicone I thought that was the way to go
@@georgematos1086 you know that's possible. I've not heard of anyone that used it having a problem. But most people I know that have used WD are on two strokes. I guess if you use too much of it, it could have an affect on the wires. Sorry @J Sails stick to the dry silicone, yamashield, or shine products :/
@@georgematos1086 we use CRC dry silicone, and yamashield mostly
Born Again Boating thanks ! Just subscribe to your channel I like the way you explain things nice and simple!

#Yamaha love dem 2 strokes!
Is this the same for lake boating?
Yup!
Great video 👍 Thanks for the effort 😊
Thats nice! Thanks for this video!
Great suggestions and advice for my #Yamaha F80!
I am my fan of you, excellent video !!! greetings from Argentina colleagues
Awesome, thank you!
My dad is the worst about slow shifting. I think that he thinks he’s driving a tractor.
My tractor has 32gears all selected semi auto .push button clutch less your boat has 1 forward 1reverse
dave smith... the only tractor I know anything about driving was my grandfathers 1980 John Deere 850. It had two gear shifters which gave you a lot of gear ratios to pick from, but you had to come to a complete stop to pick the gears you wanted. I think when my dad is putting my boat in gear, he thinks the gears will eventually stop moving like it does in a tractor.
What style of #Yamaha have the corrosion issue?
The biggest ones are the 2002-2004 F225's four-strokes
Are they the same block in the 2005 f200s
V6 4 strokes?
Valuable info. Thanks
Why isn’t there a air filter on outboards?
The electric motor for the tilt seems to rust and fail no matter how much I clean it and its expensive to replace.
Yeah, that is a common issue, what you can do though is to paint the motor and clear coat it more.
@@BornAgainBoatingyea, I can't paint the whole thing without lifting the outboard off the boat though.
👍good to see you again

2.99 rec gas!!!!! Ahhh the good ol days when I thought that was high.
I have a 2012 Yamaha f70 with analog gauges how can I find out how many hours I have on it?
Well, you won't be able to without hooking it up to a computer that is registered with a Yamaha dealer :( Good thing is that the engine does store the hours. Maybe call a local dealer and see if you can swing by with your boat and pay them for 15 minutes of time to hook it up and give you the hours :)
Consider upgrading to Yamaha digital tachometer (loads on eBay) - it will remind you when your engine is due for a service.
Furthermore depending on which model your engine is you might be able to monitor oil pressure, engine temperature and voltage - which can assist in detecting engine issues early.
Welcome back! How was class?
It was good, it's always nice to get around other techs and here about stuff going on across the industry. As well as talk to the tech support guys, the instructors, and play around with the bugged engines :)
Great video thanks!
Lots of info in short vid. Thx.
Hey! Welcome back!
