Good stuff! I’ve been 8 miles offshore with one motor heading back and nothing better to do than diagnose the problem at 7 mph. It was a complete loss of power. Trim and everything! 115 Honda. 20 minutes later after going through the biggest fuse to the smallest it was....the smallest fuse that was the problem. 10 amp fuse shut the entire right engine down. I replaced that fuse 16 years ago and never had any problems.
I once blamed my wife for power loss because she gained too much weight. She hit me. Turned out to be a spark plug wire fell off. Anyway start your analysis with the engine not your wife.
I just diagnosed this exact issue! 02 Vmax 150 carbd. I had Stuck poppet valve... removed calcification and greesed, also..5/16" ethanol damaged shredded line from primer bulb to engine was hidden in rigging trunk... upgraded to 3/8" (cut grommet at rigging trunk to make fit). Runs like a top now.
Just got a marlin with a omc 115 took it out to find that at full speed the boat would fall on it's face . It was a rotten fuel line it was sucking air. CHECK YOUR FUEL LINES!
Experienced the trim sender issue twice this week. Once on a verado and once on an evinrude G2. Glad to see you mentioned it. Completely ridiculous that this can put your boat into rpm reduction.
I found that a leaking fuel connector allowing air to seep in is also a very likely culprit. Check all connections frrom the tank all the way to the carb ... and be happy !
Years ago I replaced a COIL on a inboard engine with another bad COIL . That’s right the NEW COIL was bad . I wasn’t familiar with the boat and thought the boat was just underpowered. Until I saw an arc while I had the engine compartment open . I replaced the coil again and thought I gained at least 100 horse power : ) .
Was cruising on the river for a few hours heading to open water and all at once my carbureted Yamaha150 just fell on its face. If I tried to go above 2,000 rpm she’d shut down. Come to find out the fuel line in the rigging tube had turned into bloated jelly. That and the heat from the sun made the line collapse. My engine was trying to drink through a straw that comes with a kids juice box. All new fuel lines and she was back to running like new. The morel of the story is change those fuel lines. If they are a few years old it’s time.
Was out on the lake the other day, and was running WOT when my motor slowed from about 6200 RPM to 5000 RPM. It would run at the lower RPM for a few seconds, and then speed back up. This happened several different times over the first 15 to 20 min. Then I ran around pulling kids on a kneeboard, so we weren't running that fast. After a couple hours of moderate speed boating, I opened it back up to run back to the dock, and didn't have any more issues with the throttle. I'm guessing maybe I had some water in the gas.
I had this problem. Mine happened to me this one time when I was going full throttle and out of a sudden, I started losing power. The boat would not go over 7 miles an hour and whenever I would try to go over 7 miles, the engine would just die on me! Turns out, I had water in the fuel system and I think I know how that happened. I believe after I got some gas at the gas station couple of weeks prior, I forgot to close the gas cap, came home and washed the boat with the fuel cap open. That's what happens when you rush things and have millions things in your mind... -:) Better to take it slow and focus on what you do. After that experience, I check the water fuel separator every so often and also add some fuel stabilizer to the gas tank if I don't use the boat for more than 2 months.
An issue I ran into with reduced power was my belt going out on my 175 verado. I lost half my RPMs at WOT and didn’t know what caused it. No overheats or change in motor sound, just lost power. Having a broken belt causes the supercharger not to run, just decreasing the RPMs. A new belt and she was all fixed up.
This might help someone I had the same issue. I spend over a thousand dollars on parts thinking it was stator- trigger which had nothing I was getting water into the cowling so before buying anything make sure you check if you are getting water inside the cowling
Was out on Lake Michigan, motor ran great, stopped, drifted, and then tried to restart, NOPE would not start, towed back to shore. Out of the water, went through the engine, fuel, plugs, screens, nearly everything, and all checked out, went back in, engine fully functional, never found the cause of problem, and never occurred again.

Loss of power 09 Verado, Supercharger band snapped so it was sucking air. Easy fix once I had a hose clamp the right size when I got back. They don't sell those on the water. I keep a couple on the boat now. Also had an issue when the prop hub spun. No problem, I have an extra prop ready to go on the boat. Oh yeah, you need a prop wrench to change it out on the water! They also sell those in plastic so they don't rust, just not on the water.

Had a 40 hp carbed Yamaha run off a 6 gallon poly tank, on a 13 foot Del Quay Dory. Engine would idle fine out of the canal for the 10 minute or so run but after 2 minutes or so of wot, would die like someone turned the key off. Would start right back up like nothing was wrong. Checked the vent valve, nothing wrong there. Played around with it for little while and figured out that the fuel pick up assembly on the tank, the gasket had failed, so when we would push the throttle down, the fuel pump couldnt pull enough fuel thru the hose, because the gasket was allowing too much air into the tank, and not creating a little bit of a vacuum that the engine needed to run
@mr.cryptobull1520 nope. 6 gallon portable tank. What we think happened was over time the seal on the portable tank assembly went bad. The tip off was there was fuel under the area where fuel line plugs into the tank. It was all plastic. Put a different tank on it and the problem went away. At idle, it was fine, but under speed conditions the top would start to pull air and the engine would loose it's prime.

HELP! I have a 2007 Boston Whaler with a 2007 Mercury 25 HP engine. The engine starts and runs well but will not plane. When in neutral, the RPM's go up to 5k with out hesitation however, when in gear under load, it refuses to go over 2500 RPM's. I've replaced and updated several parts with zero change in performance. Those improvements are as follows: prop, water pump, fuel injectors, spark plugs, fuel filter, oil filter, thermostat, fuel tank and fuel line. Had the VST looked at as well and checks out. Please help! We have a very small window of time to enjoy the ocean here in Massachusetts and the window is closing. Thank you!
Hi. Thank you for the great vid. My 115 Mercury Optimax was standing for about 7 months with about 4 flushes over that period. I took it to the river over the weekend and for some reason it is in limp mode. No alarms just limp mode. Any help?
Ahhh, yes the pee hole issue...In July 2018, had a mud dauber make a home out of my engine's little urethra that ruined a planned offshore trip with 2 bathing suit female friends to the Middle Grounds...The day got scrapped till 3 weeks later and I spend 3 hours clearing one of the hardest substances known to man...A Mud Daubers mud nest! Luckily, 3 weeks later was an amazing day, but that day was gonna be epic...and it wasn't.
I hit a big wave and lost power, but I’m confused because it idles fine. You can rev it up in idle. It’s not getting hot or it’s not smoking but when you put it in gear, it just loses power and dies.

With this issue need to be sure the gas tank is vented otherwise negative pressure builds up in the gas tank and doesn't allow adequate flow to the engine. By simply turning the vent knob on the gas cap flow is restored and voila, problem solved!
@stephenwaller3118 I own a Trophy WA with an 85 gal on board tank, and it's vented from the outside. The primer bulb failed to keep prime. We had to keep squeezing the bulb to get back. It's cheap insurance to keep one extra on board.
Would you know if a 2013, 90hp mercury outboard 4 stroke # 1B986113 has that trim sensor. Motor misses at idle and “bucks” when trying to get on plane, but no alarms. Motor has been at the dealership for about a month, they have ran fuel, electronics, compression and water test. They “think” it’s a faulty ecm.$$$ BTW, very informative videos
Ok, so your offshore and have a misfire. You pull coil wires and see #2 does not change. #1 DONOT unplug with engine running! #2 now you know #2 is misfiring, What are you going to do about it???????????
you know that it is not going to get worse and may find a rpms sweet spot for max power. if it is a clogged fuel filter it may get worse .I am not a fan of diagnostic in the ocean.
I had a power loss problem on my 2000 mercury efi. It would max out at 3500 rpms then jump to WOT out of nowhere. Found a loose hose clamp at the water separator. I suspect the small fuel leak was letting air into the system?

My Mercury 2 stroke 90hp 2009 3 cylinder will idle great at the right rpm. But when throttling up the motor begins to spit and sputter and begins to pop out of the prop exhaust. Waiting on jets. That what is left to change everything else checks out. In the video I see a round plastic screen. I wonder if I have one of those on my engine and where would it be located.
Did you figure out what is was? I have the same engine. It idles fine, but doesn't rev up. Cleaned up fuel system, replaced all filters, still nothing.
Hey guys I have an evinrude ficht that bogs when I accelerate but reaches top rpm any advice on what to do? I had to put a temporary in line fuel filter could that be starving my engine?
Shouldn't be, you should have a fuel filter in the boat for sure! But sounds like a different issue with the engine. Timing advance, TPS, fuel injection issue, not really sure, could be a lot of things, but you can bypass the fuel filter and test if you want, but I doubt the fuel filter is your issue :/
@@BornAgainBoating hey thanks for the reply is it common for injectors to be blocked and if so can I use the method you had In your video using the little 12v battery?
We have a 23 horsepower Vanguard on a Go Devil long tail that was loosing power because the hose that runs from the cylinder to the fuel pump was old and had a crack in it. I don't know if this is the case for the newer ones (ours is 32 years old) but it does not like to run on low fuel pressure. I'm not complaining when there's no problems this thing runs like its brand new but Id like to get one of the new fuel injected Vanguards and a new long tail. Unfortunately we do not have the money to buy a $5000 motor mainly because we just got a 1999 Key West 210 Bay Reef that is in immaculate condition for $6500. (it was a steal we got lucky)
I've got a yamaha80efi engine. which runs quite well. I have one issue which i cant seem to find the problem for. after running it for a good while and trying to get back to the harbour, it seems to have problems to stay in lower rpms. this problem does not happen when i leave the harbour. any ideas? greetings from Germany! :)
So i have a question i have a 2004 yamaha 225 4 stroke with 420hrs, i was running offshore hit a wave and the engine rpm and speed drop, my alarm came on, i shut it off and back on with out any problem, it has done it like 5 times, what can i look at, i checked my oil level and is good, and this is something that just started doing
You can check outboard height, when wave hits you it can dlow you down and prop loose grip, and starzs to ventilate.you have to lowrr rpm and get on plane again.
I have a problem my optimax is going for a 1h and then it dies the buzzer won't sond an the fule pump won't start need to wait 10-20 min so it cools off to start it again do anybody no the problem?
I have a 2-year old (220 hours) Mercury 150 4-stroke that has run flawlessly until about a month ago. Now, the first time during each trip that I accelerate to get up on a plane, the engine shutters as it climbs to higher (around 4K) rpm's' for a few minutes and won't reach max rpm's. After that, it runs perfectly for the rest of the day, even at full throttle/5500 rpm's, and even after stopping and starting. I use the boat about once a week and only use ethanol fuel. I know it's covered by warranty, but I like to take care of this kind of stuff myself. The fuel filter was changed at 100 hour service and it doesn't have a separate fuel/water separator. I'm wondering if it could be a venting issue.
@@markdrabik9312 I thought I had found the issue...lack of good fuel tank ventilation. When I remove the gas cap, I get a very significant wooshing sound like the tank has a lot of pressure (or maybe vacuum). Based on some things that I read online I thought that might have been the problem but when I contacted the dealer who sold me the boat they said that my fuel system is pressurized by design and should do that. I did experiment with taking the cap off to release pressure when I was having the engine shuttering problem but it didn't seem to help. More recently I am wondering if the problem could be related to ventilation in the cooling system. I noticed that if I accelerated to plane from slow speed with the engine trimmed up too high, the engine would briefly ventilate. As soon as I hear that sound I trim the engine down but I get the engine shutter for a while after that. I'm wondering if the shuttering could be related to having some air in the cooling system and then the engine limits RPM's until it senses good waterflow. I've never heard of that before, but there does seem to be a correlation between those two things happening.
Hey man what would be a reason that my rpm jump and down and the boat would lose power and die been kicking my ass change a few thing already if you ever had that go on in mercury optimax 200

Thank you!
I don’t know how you could have a boat with a fuel water separating filter that doesn’t have a see thru bottom sight glass
Captain Ron is a great movie.
Hi. Thank you for the great vid. My 115 Mercury Optimax was standing for about 7 months with about 4 flushes over that period. I took it to the river over the weekend and for some reason it is in limp mode. No alarms just limp mode. Any help?
Could be anything but I would start with checking out your fuel here's some videos: ruclips.net/p/PLDFOb030syP4fpLlxGN3EH7gmSUb1VFS3
Thanks
Ahhh, yes the pee hole issue...In July 2018, had a mud dauber make a home out of my engine's little urethra that ruined a planned offshore trip with 2 bathing suit female friends to the Middle Grounds...The day got scrapped till 3 weeks later and I spend 3 hours clearing one of the hardest substances known to man...A Mud Daubers mud nest! Luckily, 3 weeks later was an amazing day, but that day was gonna be epic...and it wasn't.
Do you have a video on how to test my relay for my fuel pump on my 200 Yamaha two-stroke
One problem I had with my old Evinrude was prop shaft bearing
I hit a big wave and lost power, but I’m confused because it idles fine. You can rev it up in idle. It’s not getting hot or it’s not smoking but when you put it in gear, it just loses power and dies.
Really hard to say, could be anything depending on the engine model and type. Fuel, spark, who knows, not much info my man
1. Run out of gas.
2. Prop falls off.
3. Stuck in reverse.
4. Locked in the garage by Greta.
5. Voted out of office.
Ver y good information. I just got the overheat alarm yesterday. Well kept 2019 Suzuki 140's. It slowed down at 5krpm.with heat alarm.Tween Vet 240 with 6 passengers. ???

Don't forget primer bulbs. We were out on lake Erie and lost fuel pressure. I had my friend keep squeezing bulb so we can get back.
They “think” it’s a faulty ecm.$$$
BTW, very informative videos

What's a bote?
Great videos do you guys have a shop ??
I got a 1980 735 horsepower Mercury and it was running great and all the sudden it started running on one cylinder the bottom plug ain't firing what should I do I re checked the car decors fired so what should I do can you come at me back and let me know thank you and have a blessed day and be safe
I was hoping you would tell me what it would be on a 35 horsepower Mercury thank you and have a blessed night
All the growth on the one hull can be power washed off? That was a crazy amount of sea life on that boat!
I have a 25 horsepower Evinrude. In the first time I took the bolt out the first 5 minutes. The engine was running perfectly and after that it just will not go over 5 mi an hour for some reason. Do anybody have a clue what the situation is

Wish I had this video 6 months ago lol. I had the trim sensor issue.
Yamaha HPDIs drop two cylinders in neutral... If the shift position switch sticks, you can run in gear on four cylinders instead of six... Ask me how I know this... 😕
Had that too.
Thanks so much for that tip.
Great video! I gotta save this and watch it again! Very informative!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Hello my 50 4 stroke motor mercury can't get power after sinked in water
Man I have a 2016 mercury 150xl 4s with 90hrs on it. It will not go past 3800 rpms or over 9mph I have no clue what could be the issue.
Hi I lose some times power on mi ya Maha 2 stroke 60hp wen I just go aut of the dock but after probably 20 minutes it fixed and starts running good wat it the issue
just bought my first boat. I need videos for I/O engines.
Don't exist...unfortunately...love this guy!!
Mine runs great on the trailer it's when I put boat in water it's starts fine you put it in gear and that's about all the revs I get 70hp troliing motor lol it opened up a couple times during the summer for about a mile or 2 than back to trolling spped I changed coils all 3 and plugs I'm stumped had it running 2hrs with the muffs temperature is fine rpm good throttle opens up put it in water back to troliing speed this is the first time I have a problem with something and have not found the solution online and I've looked several times it's been a year since I last looked so I'm giving it another shot before this summer has come an gone an hopefully I can go enjoy some time on the lake again I bought this motor off a landlord who said someone left it behind 70hp evinrude middle to late 70s the mechanic who installed it said it looks all rebuilt it has all gaskets unfortunately his shop burnt down recently and no marine mechanic within 100km of my place so hopefully your video gives me a clue as too what it might be watching er now cheers
Anyone have a recommendation on a good mechanic located in either the Ft Myers or Stuart, Fl area? Trying to keep the Florida boating dream alive while out of state. Engine is a 2005 Mercruiser 5.0 MPI, I/O. 260 hp. Thanks.
Please Talk To Us About Gear Ratios - Power Head Revolutions Per Minute Vs. Propeller Revolutions Per Minute. Also Include The Differences Between Diesel Power Vs. Gasoline Power as Far as Torque is Concerned. That Should Make Very Interesting Viewing, Thanks Mate!
This is gold...thank you again
You bet!
Great video, please keep them coming.
Do you have any videos of sterndrive boats.?
I can't seem to find a mechanic who will service it
We have a 23 horsepower Vanguard on a Go Devil long tail that was loosing power because the hose that runs from the cylinder to the fuel pump was old and had a crack in it.
Awesome video with great content, thanks for everything
So i have a question i have a 2004 yamaha 225 4 stroke with 420hrs, i was running offshore hit a wave and the engine rpm and speed drop, my alarm came on, i shut it off and back on with out any problem, it has done it like 5 times, what can i look at, i checked my oil level and is good, and this is something that just started doing
You can check outboard height, when wave hits you it can dlow you down and prop loose grip, and starzs to ventilate.you have to lowrr rpm and get on plane again.
@@tonchido this just started happening, is kind of weird to be honest
Had lose of power for loose connection on battery disconnect
My head is spinning of all of these potential troubleshooting steps. I got BoatUS printed on my forehead.
I have a 2018 mercury verardo its putting a lot of gas in crankcase every time I use it can anyone help it only has 15 hours on it
I have Yamaha 2012 f350 dies after 15 seconds?
No idea, maybe fuel :/
Terrific , what about a power head ?
I have a problem my optimax is going for a 1h and then it dies the buzzer won't sond an the fule pump won't start need to wait 10-20 min so it cools off to start it again do anybody no the problem?
2002 mercury 200hp saltwater outboard 4 beeping alarm run un high rpm went lower beeps and lost full power
Any recommendations I watch all you videos and thank you very much
You failed to mention to check the thermostat to see if it's stuck closed causing an overheating issue.
I take my bout out of the water at the end of the season to clean and wax it so its ready for the next season
Throttle position sensor module going bad causes the same problem.
These video's are awesome! Great job!
Excellent video for all of us
Very good advices, thaks
thank you
Very good and much much knowledge thank you
Most welcome
Why do you only use ethanol fuel?
@@tractorguru8168 Sorry I meant non-ethanol only
Did you find the issue? I’m having the same problem with a 150 hp Mercury 4 stroke
Another great video 👍
Glad you enjoyed it
Dear sir. Greetings.
Good lessons
So nice of you
Hey man what would be a reason that my rpm jump and down and the boat would lose power and die been kicking my ass change a few thing already if you ever had that go on in mercury optimax 200
