This video is hilarious and depressing at the same time. As someone who is looking for a first boat, it makes me stop looking at older boats whatsoever. Thank you for posting this.
Depressing? Most if not all shown in this video was don around salt water. Even boats used in salt water can be in good shape if the owner has taken good care. Boats used in fresh water can get damaged or can be poorly maintained too. Boats up north usually are only used about half a year because of winter and cold weather. Boats in the south can be used year round and may have to stay in the water if the owner does not have a lift or cannot afford a trailer or rack storage. I think the video was very good giving us all a idea of what to look at perhaps before hiring a surveyor to look for us. You can see quite a bit on your own which can help you decide if you even want to make an offer or not.
Bro don't rule out an older boat. There are a lot of them that don't require a ton of money to repair. They can be brought back to life for less than you think if you're willing to learn and do the work yourself. There are great guys out here willing to give away years of knowledge to help you do it right.
Bring along a long time boater. Someone that has already spent his time and money in the nooks and crannies of a boat. Several times I was asked to evaluate a boat and several times I’ve told the prospective buyer “Please don’t walk away , just run!” or “Is that how much they are paying you to take it?” There can be deals but 95% of them need work and only experience (painful) can tell where.
When I bought my used boat, he said no surprises. Luckily all that was wrong was a raw water pump and a $50 power steering hose crack. Never believe "no surprises". Thanks for the info.
What an informative video, you covered everything that needs to be done. Wish I'd known this before purchasing my boat, could have saved a lot of money hiring someone to inspect it. Thanks for the great tips. Looking forward to the next video.
Allways check what fuel lines that you can make sure that they are not leaking cracked or old. Also check the bilge for the smell of fuel. Awsome video.
Many time water apears just after putting a boat in water, cose its been sitting somewhere in the bow,not visible.so i would put it in water, clear it.than ho fast clean it again.tjan stop and check for leaks
An excellent video. Thank you for posting. This is super helpful for a first time boat buyer. For someone with experience in auto mechanics and construction, doing your own due diligence seems possible. The main principals seem to be paying attention to details and systems for irregularities. So before buying, educated yourself about boat structures and systems, take your time and be observant during a DIY survey.
Always have a light handy and inspect all those hard to see drain hoses that connect the self bailing deck to the water. Very often they are neglected and starting to rust and rot.
Wish I had seen this before I got my boat. Some I new some I didn’t. Great general knowledge. Pay attention boat buyers this will save you a lot of headaches down the road.
There is another question. I have a 2006 135 verado 4 stroke. The problem is the steering, the boat is a 2006 mako with uflex hydraulic with power assist. The seals leaked on the ram so I have replaced them but am having a problem bleeding out the system. There is very little information about theses systems on the internet. I have tried to bleed them the normal ways but just keep getting air bubbling out into the holding tank and no movement of the motor. I am thinking there may be an issue with the pump as I don’t hear anything when engine is running or with the key on. If you or anyone else can help, maybe point me in the right direction or give me some information it would be very grateful ( davesest@gmail.com).
Buy a dollar store rubber mallet. Use it to gently tap the transom, hull and stringers. You want to hear and feel pings, not thuds. Thuds are dry rot and wet substrate. Try using it on new boats to get a feel for the response a good hull should have. Never buy a Merc that has been in the salt for any period of time...
Hi Born Again Boating, I hope you and your family have a Merry Christmas and a prosperous NewYear! ..... Thank you for all the fantastic videos you produce and post; I have learned so much from you and I never take it for granted' it is much appreciated....
Once looked at a boat where the guy told me it was just serviced including an oil change. However, sharpie was used by whoever did it last and date was over 2 years prior. I asked him if he wanted to revise his claim... I stopped there and did not even make him an offer.
I bring a code reader when looking at used cars. See if they cleared it to get rid of a check engine light. Shimmy under the car with a flash light. Look everywhere I can and sniff the engine oil. I can’t image walking up with a bag of tools to pull out plugs and compression test it haha. Suggestions on how to test a motor if it’s out of the water and at their house? Like if looking on letgo, Craigslist or eBay? Thanks.
#Footcush. Great video. Poor Wiring and mechanical problems can be a great bargaining point. Especially if you can do much of the work yourself. You can get a great deal on a boat that just needs a little attention. Keep the great videos coming. Merry Christmas!
The Most Comprehensive Boat Inspect Process I've ever seen. Those pesky spider web like stress cracks in The Gel Coat. Don't freak out, Gel Coat is extremely brittle. Most occur At or on the transom in Newer fiberglass boats. Older hulls in fiberglass will have them at the gunnels and deck too. Just remember; brittle brittle, brittle. And usually superficial. Today's Tip; before launching, "Put The Plug In".
Getting a Laugh; my dad was a millright at Alcan Aluminum for over 40 years. Naturally when the "Aluminum Boat" broke onto the market, he got one; The Springbok Model. 16' with a 50hp merc. I grew out of that and got me a 17ft J-Craft but the newest one with a V hull, it was fiberglass. (our lake was a bit choppy) I slung a 175 merc on her and was pulling 76mph. After my second or 3rd outing, I was "Pumping Up The Gas pressure Ball and saw all these cracks on the transom (in the corners) I nearly had a heart attack and trailered her immediately. I rushed the boat back to the dealer and showed him the cracks....you could hear them laughing for 3 blocks.... I nearly got killed 10 times in that boat!! Some of the happiest days of my life....
#FOOTCUSH. Great video!!’ You covered evening there is to do to keep you out of deep water when buying a used boat! Thanks so much for the video content. I’m a do it yourself kind of guy and love watching how you fix up good used boats! Have a Merry Christmas!!
Please run a video on power assist hydraulic steering with information on bleeding I am having trouble with my older uflex system. It has no bleed out on the top of the helm steering. Running out of ideas.
That should have a regular mercury power steering pump hooked up to a uflex steering cylinder on the engine? You should be able to take the lid off the steering pump and with the engine running just fill the steering pump until it is about an inch or a 1/2 inch from the top.
Born Again Boating thanks for the info but have done that and it is not working. This is why I think it may be the pump itself. I have filled it a couple times and tried bleeding it too but getting nothing motor doesn’t budge. I can push the motor by hand so it’s not locked up. Only thing I can think of is the pump. Was just wondering what you thought.
What would cause a fire on a boat? I noticed some boats at auction that BURN appears as a cause of damage to the boat but the boat does not appear to be burned, or be burned in a small place where the hull has a paint blister. Are these fires that may have occurred in a warehouse where boats were stored?
All kinds of things, fuel leaks, engine trouble, wiring issues, grills, all kinds of stuff! But for the auction, if there's no visible damage to the hull, its probably something that happened to the engine or in the engine compartment.
Hey Aaron all the best wishes and happiness to you and your family for Xmas mate, its a beautiful 30° Celsius Xmas day here in Melbourne Australia might go fishing later😀 keep bringing on those vids champ....
Thank you! And great luck with the search! You'll find tons of information here with us, and once you get your boat and start going, if you want to fast track your learning curve and avoid some costly mistakes, we have a Boater's Program at BornAgainBoating.com that helps you learn the quick way. We've got a 3 Years Boating Experience in 30 Days challenge. Where you take courses everyday for about 30 minutes a day and it teaches you basically all the things you would learn after boating for 3 years, if not longer lol again wish you the best of luck on your search!
Not really, they just mean that the boat is old and used :) Most of that is just surface gelcoat spider cracking. It isn't structural glass cracking or separating. They are basically just stress cracks from offshore use :)
Born Again Boating thanks for the info, hopping that I can find a good used affordable cuddy thats not a money pit from the beginning, maybe a 22 or 23 ft trophy or stripper with about 500 hours with a Yamaha 150 4 stroke. A 2000 or newer.
All good info but I’d like to add that don’t always take the numbers on the tach as factual...My tach had to be replaced when the boat had 18 hours on it and afterwards, the boat/tach showed 0 hours. Always get it scanned to be sure. #footcush
Hello, I’m a marine service tech currently in school. I know need a circuit tester or power probe. Which would you recommend, I’m looking at the power probe 4 basic kit but I kit that snap on student discount. Not sure of the pros and cons other than the snap on cost more and doesn’t come with a case. Which would you recommend as you have experience?
Hello! I just use my meter for circuit testing and I have a power probe 3 to supply power to pumps and stuff if need be. To be hones though, I only ever use the power probe at my toolbox when I need to run something and the jumpers on my bench battery mess up! Lol another tech bought the power probe 4 and then returned it, he didn't like it at all, it was just too much! I would say to definitely take advantage of that discount though and depending on what your tool situation looks like. I used it to buy all hand tools, wrenches, ratchets, sockets, pliers, crimpers, etc.
Also, I’m not sure if anyone else has thought of this. But I put plastic dry wall anchors and some 5200 in the holes where I had some T-top screws backing out. Haven’t had any more screws try to back out and that sucker is solid!
First #FOOTCUSH Nice vid Merry Christmas to you and family. Great video….don’t forget about the DOT date code on the tires. Maximum life should be 6 to 10 years no matter how much tread is there.
I've lost too many at 5 years to trust anything past 4

Merry Christmas fellas thanks for another great video
Love the videos. Wish I had seen these before buying my last boat.
Thanks again for another informative video!
Be down in key Colony, by june 20-30. See you Then. Great Videos Always 👍👍👍⚓⚓⚓
Hi Born Again Boating, I hope you and your family have a Merry Christmas and a prosperous NewYear! ..... Thank you for all the fantastic videos you produce and post; I have learned so much from you and I never take it for granted' it is much appreciated....
#FOOTCUSH Look up how to do a “tap test’’ and use a metallic rounded object and tap the transom for dull thud areas and check for delam rotten areas.
He also demonstrates that in his video project boats, everything you need to know ruclips.net/video/Bf9ArCXokmk/видео.html
Great Information. Thanks!
5:04 GOSH!!! Those little things..
thank you that's a very thorough explanation with great examples of what not to see in an inspection
Good stuff! Merry Christmas!

Thanks for this video as I’ll be making a purchase within the next year. Happy Holidays
I think I'll keep saving my money and just get a modest NEW boat
Merry Christmas mate. Thanks for all help on my boat this year you really keep me afloat. 🇦🇺👍

Just like the car, youll just have to bring the tools, and I'd bring a jump pack, most of the time the batteries are dead lol

#footcush , I'd love to see what is acceptable flex of a transom - when shacking an outboard - maybe on a trailer and maybe on jack stands.
Nothing! Should be zero flex. If it flex's in any way move on to the next boat. Unless you have money burning holes in your pocket.
@@allugo3726 I think I would agree - but I think this video shows a little bit of flex. unless its the trailer working.
What's "shacking an outboard"? Sounds naughty
This was a very helpful video brother. Thank u.🤙🏼

do you have any videos or are you making one on how to inspect an aluminium boat before buying?
I dont, unfortunately we dont see a lot of them around here because it's an island and everything is flats boats and offshore fishing:/
Excellent, thanks
Welcome!
Hey Aaron all the best wishes and happiness to you and your family for Xmas mate, its a beautiful 30° Celsius Xmas day here in Melbourne Australia might go fishing later😀 keep bringing on those vids champ....
Inspecting your trailer and motor the right way are just as important as the vessel itself! #footcush
What u think about a 28ft 2000 Prokat? Are they good boats? Thanks
They are a pretty good boat, we have a couple in the yard. I'm more of a mono-hull type guy though over a catamaran :)
Love this series
Good info thanks
Glad it was helpful!
This is a lot of great information.
#FOOTCUSH Merry Christmas! Thanks for all the information!
first, great channel! What mobile code reader/scan tool app do you use? thanks
Thank you! That is Yamaha YDIS Smart, their mobile version for yamaha diagnostics, another dealer tool lol :/
I need to buy one of your boats!
Nice tip's!!

#FootCush Thank you so much for this weeks video! Merry Christmas, and see you next week!
Its termed a Boat Survey Mate.
If you wanted a shop to inspect a motor, what would it cost?
Depends, a lot of where you live and the local rate. A lot of shops just charge a flat rate per engine, whether it's 1 or 2 hours per engine.
Born Again Boating thanks for the info, hopping that I can find a good used affordable cuddy thats not a money pit from the beginning, maybe a 22 or 23 ft trophy or stripper with about 500 hours with a Yamaha 150 4 stroke. A 2000 or newer.
Merry Christmas! Very good info on your videos, keep them coming! Thanks as always.

Automatic bilge float? 😳. My boat 🚤 doesn't have that 😞.
Some new ones have that component internally
The Skipper and Gilligan said it was a good deal though.
Merry Christmas great show enjoy the different views on things you show a fellow tradesmen #footcush
#footcush. Another excellent vid with great tips. Merry Christmas 🤙
i just bought a second hand boat and only did a third of these things, oh well next time I guess.

#footcush watch out for rusty motor mounts. That’s a daunting task!
Also, I’m not sure if anyone else has thought of this. But I put plastic dry wall anchors and some 5200 in the holes where I had some T-top screws backing out. Haven’t had any more screws try to back out and that sucker is solid!
so is born again boating a clever name you came up with or does it have some kind of meaning.
It's a spiritual reference to a boat being born again. Just like a person can be born again through the blood of the Lord Jesus Christ :)
#FOOTCUSH another great video to refer back to when needed.
#FOOTCUSH awesome video as always thanks for sharing
