Thank you for the video, New Years Eve the Suburban we inherited wouldn’t shift when we drove it into town to the store and my wife who has small hands was able to unplug it so we could drive home and didn’t have to get towed by AAA. Video was a great help getting us home.
Video was a great help. Would add that on a 2004 Suburban, there is what looks like an ECM and a vent tube blocking access to the part. You can pop the vent piece out, and a 7mm socket can remove the bracket for the ECM-looking box. The box drops, and there is the part you need access to. Hope this helps, and thank you for a very helpful video.
Brother thank you so much, been fighting to install that solenoid for 2 days know, watch so many videos ask so many questions no body could give me an answer, if you wouldn't have mentioned that clip, I've would be fighting it still, YOU'RE AWESOME BROTHER THANKS....
Wish I would have found this video earlier.. got stuck at the gas station with my truck stuck in park. Had to tow it home. Definitely gonna try and fix it myself this weekend.
I have a 2001 chevy Tahoe z71 & your video is awesome & explains it SOOOOO much better than any video I’ve watched. It seems it’s much easier to access on your GMC from underneath I literally couldn’t get my head in there to see from near the pedals 😅 so I took the knee panel off & there’s the metal plate in front still that I may have to take off 😂 but I was able to get the green clip off just not the wires yet. Having acrylic nails & limited hand space is my enemy at the moment. Chevrolet dealership also just told me that the part I need is called automatic trans shift lock so I’m hoping they’re right. Again, thank you so much for your video & very helpful information. I’m hoping this is the issue because I already had my trans gear shift cable changed from it being stuck in park cause right now we have to shift it from underneath truck & I can’t do that by myself. Hope I can get this last part disconnected so I can see if that’s my issue.
Thanks for the insight on how this solenoid fits in. Just a couple things I did different. Unclip the arm from the shift lever, shift works. Unclip the device from both ends, work it out to the bottom and you can disconnect the electric plug a lot easier. After you get the device snapped back in place, with the vehicle in park, slide the round part as far aft as possible then push the white tab in to lock it. Otherwise you may not get the safety feature to work. The round part needs to be as far aft as possible so it can lock the shaft with the indent in the shaft.
🎉🎉🎉😊I been stranded several times lately on 99 Suburban since our friend fixed brakes n tire rods. Its my painter work truck very stressful n not like I wanted to take a nice vehicle instead to jobsites or face a $300 dealer repair on the ol beast plus towing or lose work . If you left it sit long enough it reset. . Geesh so simple n frankly imo a way dumb safety feature .. I couldn’t get the wire plug out but unlocked the lever for now. I tht it would be a $300 plug harness .( as in hubs big truck land everything is $$$$$$)
Thank you, excellent video. Another video did show you turn the ignition key to just before it starts. Tthis allows you to shift into neutral and then start the truck. Once started shift into gear, go home and replace the solenoid. Keep on Keeping on!
Ive been fighten with this for awhile , I thought it was the brakelight switch , this worked ! You saved me ! I was stuck at the gas station . thank you soo much . I'll get the new part now .
I knows this is an older video but it helped me out a lot. I was able to identify the solenoid and unplug it to prove that was the faulty part. Now i just have to figure out how to get my hands in there too replace it with a new one. Thanks!!
Outstanding! My truck is 4x4 and it gets way out there. Also, my Son drives it. This is a life saver video. Thank you!! I may just cut into the wire and bring it up to a toggle switch on the dash. That way I can always have it enabled, but if it fails, just click the switch and open the circuit.
Thank you - have 2005 GMC Yukon that is hard to get back into park. It will move into all the other gears but have to play with it to get it back into park. Thanks again.
Thank you Señor, for the insight of that actuator. It’s supposed to lock the little bar in place to prevent the truck from shifting into park; but the little mounting hole and the bar go mounted on some ball joint studs, on the shifter and the column. I think you have to put use some seam sealer or Gorila Glue on the terminal and actuator mounting hole, to mount it back on the column and shifter. In my case, there was no bushings or anything where it buttons to the ball joint studs.
Duuuuuuude thank you. 2000 something Chevy Suburban has a metal plate in front of it but it got lose and popped off. Thanks to you i popped it back on and strapped it down and we're good to go.
Thats awsome info brother! You saved me a major headache I'm gonna try it. Just ran all new brake lines wheel cylinders shoes and pads and cant get out of park. Thanks a lot your AWSOME!. I SUBSCRIBE to the channel thanks again.
I was stuck after picking up a brake booster that I ordered from a parts store, I would've had to pay towing plus who knows what to get it fixed on my Chevy Express 2500 2007 work van. I googled gmc park shift on my phone, got this video and saw the green wire and shape of the shift interlock solenoid, stuck my head under the dash and found it on the drivers side of the steering column, disconnected the plug and VOILA! Thank you very much sir. Here is a tip for you and others. If we trust Jesus the Christ as our saviour, through His undeserved mercy, He will save us from a crisis eternity and transport us to be with Him forever. Much, much better than being stuck in park at the side of the road with a vehicle that won't move.
Thank you for the help and part number... but in All Honesty... the best part is that after watching several times....I could fix it myself ☺ Thank You VERY Much..
Dude....you rule! Finally a usefull utube video! I just got my 99 tahoe back today after shelling out 450.00 dollors forba brake booster replacement. I was on my way home and stopped for gas. Bingo....cant shift. Popped the wires off and went on my way! I drive heavy trucks and grew up in the 70's when you actually had to have a brain to drive. All the old cars would shift without a foot on the brake. All heavy trucks will start in gear. DUH! .I wont be fixing it . I will just keep using the common sense god gave me unlike todays drivers who need automatic breaking and cars that park themselves.
Thanks you have been a lot of help . My problem is no brake lights so it will not come out of park. All fuses good , brake switch I think same spot under dash .
yes i do and i did. It's the right thing to do bro. You took the time and energy to make the video and i got the information for freeeeee. You are the man. Keep up the fantastic work. Now i can burn rubber.
Awesome video. I don’t know if this is the problem but it will get me a hell of a lot closer if it’s not, stands to reason that maybe I knocked that white clip off when I was fishing some wires through the dash for a light bar so fingers crossed and thanks again.
PS: The problem occurred for me after everything was put back together and I backed the truck out of the shop and it wouldn’t go into park so right back into the shop it went where I had to chock the wheels and disconnect battery because as you said, no park means the key stays in.
Man this was a helpful video thank you soo much for explaining everything so good and very understandable step by step made my job easier thank you sir!!
Dam after reading through all kinds info your fixed work so at least I can get home and I know what's wrong I'm not any kinda mechanical I'm a musician and it took 10 mins after your video thx bro
Thank you very much for sharing this video was very helpful I have one question my truck won't shift gear its stuck in park is this the same part that is cosing the problem ?
Thank you very much! Just had that happen to my 1996 Sonoma today. I must ask in general... how much extra is spent in the factory on crap like this? With it bypassed it's not like a kid could shift it from park, you still need the key turned. Seems like a 25 year old bs saftey... like mandatory rear view cameras now
Just did a dash swap, took my time and made sure I didn't miss any plugs when reconnecting (used the original harness for the vehicle) and now the solenoid won't release the shift lever. Does the thing fail all on its own, or does the brake pedal switch cause the fault? I have it disconnected and it's drivable, but I'm a stickler for having everything working as it should..
@@NVSRides I still have the original installed in my 1997 Suburban, I'm just making sure there isn't a fault somewhere else because it worked fine before the swap. My 1999 was doing what yours did so I got a new switch for it, but I haven't reconnected that one yet to see if it solved the problem. The dash swap was between the two vehicles, but I transferred over the complete dash harnesses with no splices or other bullshit. It's actually easier than it sounds.
@@NVSRides don't be intimidated by it, should only take half a day to complete. Disconnect your battery, pull your computer out of the cradle and remove the cradle, then pull the breaker box cradle as well. Should all be 10mm. There are 5 plugs under the hood (cruise control, wipers, lighting, one going under the booster and a yellow one leading to the airbag sensors.) There's a big black plug through the firewall with a T30 in the center of it, that's for the under hood harness; then one screw at each corner of the passthrough to release the wiring block for the dash assembly. Those first 5 plugs stay connected to the dash harness so you feed them through the hole. Then you take all that you can off the lower dash and start on the column. There's one bolt to connect the steering shaft under the hood, one big plug and a yellow airbag plug for the steering column under the dash, a smaller black plug for the brake light switch (careful you don't move the brake light switch out of position like I did...) and four nuts holding the whole thing in. All of those should be 15mm. You already know where the linkage is, disconnect it and pull the staple-looking thing from the shift cable and it will come loose from the column entirely. Don't worry about the rubber boot through the firewall, just pull the column back when you have everything disconnected and it will come with it. That crossbar under the column has to come out when disassembling the lower dash, but remember to replace it after you get the column out or the dash will get really flimsy and crack to pieces when you try and pull it out. This is crucial. From there you have a bolt at each end pointing upward above the kick panels, two of the same size with large captive washers right behind the passenger airbag (get there easily from the empty glove box hole,) two 7mm behind the cluster and three across the top among the windshield defroster vents. After that, the dash will rock toward you and you can reach behind and start unplugging stuff. Everything is either color coded or only fits the correct female plug end so you can't really screw it it up when reconnecting. The only thing you can do wrong is not reconnect them at all. And before you pull the whole thing out, there's a single blue wire going to the parking brake assembly that's very close to the firewall wiring block. It's very short and easy to miss. It took me months to get this done because I'm a major procrastinator, but the actual working time is only half a day. Maybe you can make a better video about it than the ones I've already watched, only a couple are decent and most are destructive methods employed by dismantlers.
I thought that this was the problem with my truck. However, the linkage cradle mechanism itself was cracked. They are made out of cast aluminum and it had been cracked and moved in the wrong direction when I would try to get it out of park. I did not know it was like that. I had removed the entire piece like you did, but it still had the problem. I would have to move the shifter up and down and hit it just right in order to get it out of park. Well, two days ago I pulled it out of park and the shifter lever just moved up and down like a wet noodle. I was sitting on the side of the road and had to remove the bottom kick panel and the bottom panel from the steering column just to get to the linkage. I have to pull and push the linkage to get it out of park etc. It looks like I stole the truck, so I hope I don't get pulled over. I went to the dealership and they wanted to charge me $375 for the part. I'm looking for one local, but most yards don't have anything this old.
I've had this problem in my project truck for a while now and always started it in neutral. Just by happenstance I recently fixed this on my moms GMC envoy 2006, seems to be a regular problem with those also.
I wish I would have seen this video earlier. I broke my shifter from pulling too hard because it was stuck in park. I might have to replace the whole column now., which is a major hassle and expense. It broke off at the screw hole for the top screw on the shifter. Maybe 2 screws will hold new shifter and a new shift interlock solenoid? I am going to give it a try. Maybe I can drill and tap another hole to hold it. A new column from GM is $943.00. Then I have to deal with the ignition, air bag, etc. I could try and get a used one through a wrecking yard. My life just got a lot more difficult. 🙁
Sorry to hear that. I wish you had seen it earlier as well. I hope you can find a way to get the a shifter to attached without putting in a new column. Maybe you can get a shifter from the junk yard instead of a full column.
@@NVSRides I bought a new aftermarket shifter and a installed it on the column. I used JB Weld at the top, where the top screw hole was broken. Turns out my brake switch was bad. That is why my park brake solenoid wouldn't unlock. Installed a $10 brake switch and so far so good.
Same problem with my 2000 Z71 5.7L Classic OBS Tahoe. Nightmare. Crank, no start ..Gauges don't work. .The problem is even with a diagnostic OBD11 reader, is that if you can't start the vehicle, you cannot get a code. Catch 22 situation. Sounds like you are right to change out the solenoid, but that could be only the tip of the iceberg.. How much do I need to spend getting my 21 year old Tahoe back on the road? A new Z71 Tahoe is insanely expensive, so I am stuck with trying to figure out what is not working..
@@NVSRides Thanks, I just replaced my brake switch but wouldn’t be surprised if it went out again. Disconnecting the green/black got me home tonight tho. I had brake lights earlier today.

Glad I was able to help. I got a bad part so now I am just running without one. Thanks for watching.
I knows this is an older video but it helped me out a lot. I was able to identify the solenoid and unplug it to prove that was the faulty part.
Now i just have to figure out how to get my hands in there too replace it with a new one.
Thanks!!
You can remove the lower part below the steering wheel to help you have more room. Thank you for your comment. Glad it helped.
Thank you for taking the time to do this video, hopefully this will fix my problem, I thought my transmission was f up
I really hope it fixes it for you as well. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment.
My switch is going out as we speak but now I know how to repair myself.
Great job and thank you!!
Glad the video could help you. Thanks for the comment.
Thank you - have 2005 GMC Yukon that is hard to get back into park. It will move into all the other gears but have to play with it to get it back into park. Thanks again.
You are most welcome
Thank you Señor, for the insight of that actuator. It’s supposed to lock the little bar in place to prevent the truck from shifting into park; but the little mounting hole and the bar go mounted on some ball joint studs, on the shifter and the column. I think you have to put use some seam sealer or Gorila Glue on the terminal and actuator mounting hole, to mount it back on the column and shifter. In my case, there was no bushings or anything where it buttons to the ball joint studs.
Thanks bro my 1995 gmc Yukon had the same problem & seeing you change the part & wires saved my ass !!!
You are most welcome. Glad I could help you out. Thanks for the comment.
Thank you. Wish I’d seen this video a week ago before I’d already fixed it…very helpful.
Well thanks for dropping a comment. Glad you got it fixed.
Duuuuuuude thank you. 2000 something Chevy Suburban has a metal plate in front of it but it got lose and popped off. Thanks to you i popped it back on and strapped it down and we're good to go.
Thanks..needed this last week. I looked like a nut in my Tahoe trying to shift .
Thanks for keeping it short and simple, very helpful bud.
Glad it was able to help you out. I appreciate the comment.
Thats awsome info brother! You saved me a major headache I'm gonna try it. Just ran all new brake lines wheel cylinders shoes and pads and cant get out of park. Thanks a lot your AWSOME!. I SUBSCRIBE to the channel thanks again.

very helpful thanks! just picked up a 1999 suburban and this started happening.
Glad it was able to help you out. Enjoy your new vehicle.
Thank you man!!...saw this after the tow home.
Sorry you didn't see it sooner. I hope now you can save a little and fix it or just undue it yourself.
Thank you for the advice and the trouble shooting temp. fixed a customer problem
Thank you your video just rescued me from the gas station in my new Used1997 sierra God bless
Glad it helped. Thanks for the comment.

Thank you. This solved the problem for me. I decided to take the bottom dash off
You are welcome. Thank you for the comment. I appreciate it.
I just want to say thank you bro!! I wish I could shake your hand ..you have no idea what a help your video was to me today 💯🙌🏼 thank you brotha
You are most welcome. Who knows maybe someday we will run into one another and we can shake hands. 🤝
Great Vid,
Just an FYI if your stuck…. if you turn your key one click to accessory you can put your truck in neutral and then turn the key to start.
Thank you for the help and part number... but in All Honesty... the best part is that after watching several times....I could fix it myself ☺ Thank You VERY Much..
You are very welcome. Glad I could help you out. Thanks for watching.
Thank you so much i got stuck in park in a car wash!!
Glad it helped you out. Thanks for watching
I am stoked this helped you. I don't have mine hooked up. The replacement part didn't last. Thank you for the comment. 🙏
Thank you. My baby is going on 230k miles. This starting to happen.
Glad it was able to help
Dam life saver bro I guess I'll bypass it till Friday to switch that pary
Glad it was able to help you. Thanks for the comment.
Thanks you have been a lot of help . My problem is no brake lights so it will not come out of park. All fuses good , brake switch I think same spot under dash .
Glad I was able to help you out. Thanks for the comment.
Thank you very much for the video. My Yukon is back in action.
Thanks for watching glad it helped you out
yes i do and i did.
If you unhook the wire it should work. I really hope that is what the problem is. Let me know and good luck.
THIS IS THE BEST ONE ON THIS TOPIC SO FAR 2022
Thank you so much for that
Man thanks for posting video!! Real helpful
You are welcome. Thank you for the comment.
Man this was a helpful video thank you soo much for explaining everything so good and very understandable step by step made my job easier thank you sir!!
You are most welcome. Thank you for the comment.
I really likened this video very good how 2's and where 2's. Looking forward to more of your videos.
Dam after reading through all kinds info your fixed work so at least I can get home and I know what's wrong I'm not any kinda mechanical I'm a musician and it took 10 mins after your video thx bro
Thank you very much for sharing this video was very helpful I have one question my truck won't shift gear its stuck in park is this the same part that is cosing the problem ?
guess i'm gonna have to subscribe now. you saved the day.
You don't have to but I am glad the video helped.
Thank you for your help. Very easy to follow.
Glad it was a help. Sucks to be stuck and seems like a common issue.
Thank you very much! Just had that happen to my 1996 Sonoma today.
I must ask in general... how much extra is spent in the factory on crap like this?
With it bypassed it's not like a kid could shift it from park, you still need the key turned. Seems like a 25 year old bs saftey... like mandatory rear view cameras now
Awesome ty so much. You ask the part store for an interlocking solenoid they don’t even know what you are talking about.
You are welcome.
Great video, thanx. Question: When you pushed the sockets onto the knobs, did you have to use a lot of force to get them to pop into place? Thanx...
Exellent tutorial thank you !! Shift
Its the same process in a 98 gmc sierra
Got me home kodos thanks good video
Glad it helped you out. Thanks for the comment.
Thank you your video and the information is awesome!
You are very welcome. Thanks for the comment.
Thank you for the video. The only problem I’m having locking the white tab in. Any suggestions? Thanks
Thanks soooo much giving that a try tomorrow
I really hope it helps you out. Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment.
Dorman parts suck. I used three before I just took it out. They failed often for me. Try to find another brand if you can.
If when you unplug the wire and it works then the part is more than likely the problem.
I need to swap a dash in my 99
@@NVSRides don't be intimidated by it, should only take half a day to complete.
Great Video Here… did exactly what you said boss Good Deal!!!… appreciate it will do a video as well and post… great awareness 💪 😊
You saved me bro! Thanks!!!
Glad I could help you out. Thanks for the comment.
Instant subsciber...
Man you just saved me so much headache.
Glad I was able to help. I know I was frustrated when it did it to me. Thanks for watching and subscribing.
I've had this problem in my project truck for a while now and always started it in neutral. Just by happenstance I recently fixed this on my moms GMC envoy 2006, seems to be a regular problem with those also.
Yes a lot of gm vehicles had and have this issue. Sad but at least it was an easy fix.
Worked great thank you man :)
Thank you for the comment.
Glad you got it fixed.
Thank you! Very helpful!
Glad the video was able to help you out. Thanks for the comment.
Son of a beeatch!
Thanks a ton! I thought I was losing my mind.....er well.....I am but......holy shit.
Thanks!
Glad this could help. Thanks for watching and you are welcome.
When you guys disconnected the green/black wire did you lose brake lights?
No I don't have it hooked up still and the brake lights work on my 97
@@NVSRides Thanks, I just replaced my brake switch but wouldn’t be surprised if it went out again. Disconnecting the green/black got me home tonight tho. I had brake lights earlier today.
Thanks man!! This really really helped!!!
You are welcome. Glad this was able to help you out. Thanks for the comment.
Best video out on this issue thanks

You saved my f-ing life ty sooooooooo much for this video
You are welcome. Thanks for watching
>> *Thank You making this video. I will try to remove the black-green wired plug. >> I sure Hope This Works.!! > Cause I am older and short on funds.
I was wondering if doing this would disable the brake light switch?
Don't think it will do anything to the brake light switch.
This Dorman part currently (6-9-23) $32 at Rock Auto. Don't know what shipping would be but they are not cheap on the shipping.
