As a european, All I knew before this video was that you run with the ball to the other end of the field and crush the skulls of anyone who gets in your way. Great video, I get the overall logic now!
I think that you need to watch rugby if you're into the skull crushing
Why am I watching this when I'm from New Zealand and have to study for a biology exam

This video really helps a ton. Before watching this, there were literally only two things I knew about American football (and this is no exaggeration);
A. You have to get the ball to the opposite side of the field
B. There's a kind of player called a quarterback
That's it.
Ah cool, glad this video helps you out a lot. American Football can be a complex sport, but once you get used to it, it's pretty cool to watch.

Texan here. Football fan for all my life. One of my favorite things about football is how quite literally every game counts. It's not like basketball or baseball in the sense that dozens of games are played and many are inconsequential. There are only 16 games in a season so there's no room for error. The stakes are way higher than in other sports and that makes for great entertainment.
You mean a team plays 16 games every season or overall there are 16 games in an NFL season?
@@prajjwaltripathi8468 Each team plays 16 games during the regular season. Compared to many team sports, that's not very many games, so, as my fellow Texan points out: each game is very important to both teams.
@@bozimmerman ahh now since last month i have seen a lot of football and just a few days ago my first ever live super bowl game, so i have some knowledge now about NFL season, but thanks for answering ❤️👍
@@prajjwaltripathi8468 they changed it last season it’s now a 18 week season with each team playing 17 games and they get 1 week for a bye to rest and recover. Then if your one of the 14 teams (out of 32) to make the playoffs you play a possible 4 more games unless you lose then your season is over.
Ur wrong mate. In soccer ⚽ there is a meritocracy, u get what you deserve. There's promotion & relegation so there's more to play for.
Growing up in Nigeria, I was always intrigued by american football and it's cliches everytime I saw clips of it on US media like cartoons and movies; the helmets and pads that made the players look like medieval warriors, the use of black painting on their checks, the tackling and shoving, it all looked cool. Sadly because I grew up in a place were no one around me know or cared about it enough to teach me how the sport works, I just stook to football(soccer). This made it difficult to watch it without losing interest so quickly.
Thankfully, ever since I came to the UK 10yrs ago, the suprisingly rising interest in the sport in britain & the access to learn sources like this video made me want to give it one more try. So thanks Ninh:).
Any time brother! Glad this video helps you understand American Football. I'd definitely say give it a try if you ever find a club - you might be very good at it.

American Football is badass. There's a reason why millions of Americans are crazy obsessed with it.
BASHER ALI how?
@BASHER ALI "real mature":)
What I like about this sport is that the referees announce the infractions, replay reviews, and the resulting decisions to us. It helps in learning the rules.
Exactly! Thanks.
Football is fundamentally easy to pick up (Not as easy as soccer/football) the penalties and infractions are the hard part. I’ve been watching since I was 6 and I still don’t know all of the penalties
Yeah, unlike soccer VAR reff😤
Many in Europe think this is a weaker version of rugby (due to protective wear, etc.) but it is actually a completely different game. Thanks to this video, one realises it is quite interesting too. Very strategic.
This is weaker version
Rugby is the real deal
They are completely different games, but with origins in the same place (Rugby league and gridiron football are both offshoots of Rugby Union). The protective padding is there in gridiron football because physical contact is permitted between almost any player on field. The only times you can't make contact with a player is when they have A) Just thrown or kicked the ball, or B) Are actively trying to catch a live ball. Passers can be tackled until the point they make their throw and are then considered off-limits (contact only being permitted if a player's momentum prevents them from stopping before contact is made). Receivers may be contacted while the ball is in the possession of the passer, but once the ball is airborne the receiver in the path of the pass is off-limits until the pass is caught, the receiver then being allowed to be tackled. Contact made on a passer after the throw is considered "Roughing the passer", as it is then unnecessary contact. Contact with a potential receiver is considered "pass interference" as the receiver's ability to make a fair catch has been removed. Both are penalties, which result in a gain of yards for the offense.
Because the times that contact is forbidden is so rare, and almost every player be contacted, the protective gear is necessary to play gridiron football. Rugby doesn't need the protective gear because the likelihood of contact between two or more players is greatly reduced, as such so is the likelihood of injury.
@@Riley_Mundt Rugby is for Legends, AF is for Kids
@@Riley_Mundt also AF doesn't has any active international major national teams, which just shows the degraded game isn't popular anywhere
@@elennet4116 There are plenty of sports that don't have wide international attention, doesn't make them any less of a sport. If you find gridiron football so easy, I invite you to put on some pads and go to a walk-on try out at a college. I think you'll learn rather quickly just how difficult it really is.

True that
American football is like a war-gaming. The strategy and preparation is unlike any other game. It’s not my favorite game (basketball) but I think it’s the best game.
While it is tactically interesting I still imo like football/soccer and rugby more, they’re more global sports that more people can like which helps unites us whereas American football is usually only enjoyed within North America and maybe in small communities in other countries.
Watching this so I can better relate to people and make friends. Many people seem to love this game and it's really socially detrimental to not understand it. Thanks for the video.
Besides the rules, there is also strategy based on score, time remaining, field position, and team strengths or weaknesses. Once you get it, it's great entertainment.

Im from Australia and I wanted to see why its so popular and this has helped me so much, thanks
Cool, glad this video helps!

Well it's so popular due to marketing
The popularity is the raw strength and quickness involved in scoring and defense. It's a pure contact sport. Amazing athletes
People who've never taken the time to watch and learn American Football might not understand the appeal at first glance, because the game is so much deeper than the face value that anyone who doesn't know the rules and intricacies is going to take it as. I've yet to see an athletic sport that has the same level of strategic depth. Because there's just so many players doing so many different things, and because of the sheer scale and turn-based style allowing both teams to constantly play mind games and out-smart each other, coaching is arguably more impactful than in any other sport. I've always thought of it as a contact sport inspired by the game of Chess. Aside from pure athleticism and physical gifts, there's just a crazy amount of strategy involved between 2 teams taking turns trying to gain control of the field(board) and each player(chess piece) having a very specialized role that they generally stick to.
The crazy part is, when you take the time to think about it you can actually break down the similarities between some of the chess pieces and NFL player positions. For example, the offensive/defensive linemen are almost just like pawns moving straight forward at each other, either attacking or defending the skill position players behind them(which are like the pieces behind the pawns that have more complex movement capabilities than pawns).
Also the QB is similar to basically the Queen and King combined, he is the most powerful piece/player on the board with so many offensive possibilities like a Queen, but also the most important player to protect and losing your QB(or playing very poorly with him) will usually lose you the game like a King. Wide Receivers and Runningbacks are kind of like Rooks and Bishops as to how they are highly valued for their ability to push all the way down the field/board in 1 move straight or diagonally. Tight Ends are kind of like Knights, typically running short L-shaped receiving routes.
I watched a game tonight and had the exact same thoughts in relation to chess.
@@42218102742 Was that the first NFL game you watched? If so, hopefully it was a decently entertaining game and was more interesting than you expected.
Of course with any sport not every match is going to be the best introduction. For example, a game with 2 teams that have great defensive units that are causing each other's offensive units to struggle and not get anywhere. I'm sure those kinds of games can come off as boring and sloppy to someone new to the sport. But sometimes those are the most intense matches, because a match of great defenses makes every yard gained and point earned on offense even more important.
I know it can be a lot to take in with learning the roles of the different positions, and learning why certain plays are being ran in specific situations. Definitely not a sport that you can watch once and get the most out of it. Hopefully you were picking up on different strategies.
That's when the dead time in between plays helps you out the most, when you're still learning the sport. lol Gives you some time to fully process the previous play you just watched and learn a few things from it.
Amazing. Thanks for this
Football plays are also incredibly cerebral. The playbook the athletes have to learn is so complex
You seem to have an obsession with thig game but dont get me wrong this sports is some sort of bootleg Rugby

PS - And am rooting for the Raiders. I know that team gets lots of hate but my heart says them.
Prepare for pain if youre gonna support the raiders. Look up "tuck rule" refs robbed them
A couple things I would add for people learning the rules:
The punter is the one who catches the ball and then kicks it high in the air when a team is giving away possession, the kicker is the one who kicks field goals and performs kickoffs. Also note that you can block kicks and punts.
The clock stops during an incomplete pass or when a ball carrier steps out of bounds. Also after a team scores.
The fullback is sort of a dying position and is usually larger than the running back, meant for gaining short yardage.
Yes, thanks.
Ethan Bielby thanks
Carlo Cocciolo anyone in the backfield can but it is almost always the quarterback. Anyone else and the play is considered a “trick play”. Passing is the most difficult job that requires the most skill so teams are very careful about who they let pass the ball
@Carlo Cocciolo Anyone can pass the ball forward. It is not limited to the QB. But once the ball passes the line of scrimmage (the starting point of the offense) then NO ONE not even the QB can pass it forwards (only sideways or backwards). In fact, a very common trick play is the QB will hand it off to a WR, the defense will think the WR will run with the ball so they come up to tackle him. The WR will then throw the ball forwards to another WR.
@Carlo Cocciolo
There are a couple of rules in play.
1) A team is allowed to attempt one forward pass per play. A second forward pass is a penalty.
2) once the ball has been advanced past the line of scrimmage (the spot where the ball was when play restarted after a tackle), no forward pass is allowed.
3) any player who has the ball can attempt a forward pass, if it’s within the first two rules.
4) any player may attempt a backwards pass at any time, and if the ball lands on the ground it is a fumble, not an incomplete pass (very similar to rugby, except American football does not have a knock on rule)
of all football teams you choose jacksonville and dallas

Hi Shontelle. Yes, I think American Football more closely resembles Rugby League than Rugby Union, but once you get used to it - it's a great game to watch and play. Thanks for the comments, much appreciated! :)
Shontelle Matano I want to learn rugby it looks really cool
watching football is second nature to most americans... they understand the downs and yards to complete a first down and so understand the basics and point of the game... here in American, high school sports such as basketball and football have such an impact... to being a sports athlete in varsity and a jock, to the craziness of highschool and college recruiting and the amount of money they spend on NFL and NBA coverage and the spotlight placed on young prospective players each and every Saturday when college football games are played... americans are crazy about sports.
rugby is American football without throwing and lots of fumbles.
@@cooldude2251 and alot more tackling
I think American football is the most strategic and interesting sport on the planet. I love that they stop in between every play and call a new, organized play, rather than the game being a nearly constant flow. It always feels like there is careful strategy going on all the time. The rules are complicated, especially as it relates to what each offensive player position is allowed to do and what is a legal block/contact and what isn't, but it all makes sense when you understand why the rules are all there. Great sport.
Yes indeed. It's complex, but when you start understanding the intricacies of it all - it's an amazing sport!
Thanks man, be sure to subscribe and check out my channel for more like this!
Yeah, people try to make fun of how slow it is and I'm like, "that's kind of what I like about it." It's fun to watch because every down is its own mini-drama.
Have you ever watched football i mean the real football? Thats the strategy.
Wtf
Its everything okay in your house broh?
I Am here to learn the sport so I can support my son as I just signed him up for football, he started practice this week, I want to be his biggest fan and supporter! He is 8!
I watch this video every year before Super Bowl. Thank you! Watching today because Lions made playoffs 😃
Now I'm ready for the Superbowl! Thanks m8!
Same here
Me too lol
+PAXperMortem me too
+PAXperMortem Cool, I'm glad this video helped you understand football in time for the Superbowl. Hope you enjoyed the game? Be sure to share this video and subscribe :)
such an interesting game...like chess....love it.
Yeah, it's a great game for sure.
No where near like chess u got right feeling wrong idea
Mac Burch yeah I think they meant the strategy not the actual game of chess
@@macburch8304 It's like chess in terms of the strategy behind taking turns and each position having a specialized role that they stick to. The offensive/defensive linemen are almost like pawns moving straight forward at each other either attacking or defending the skill position players behind them which have more complex movements.
Shit even when you think about it you can break down the similarities between some of the pieces and skill positions. The QB is almost like the Queen, the most powerful piece on the board with so many offensive possibilities, but also very important to protect and play smart. Wide receivers and Bishops are kind of like Rooks and Bishops as to how they tend to move all the way down the field straight or diagonally, just like the how the pieces move on the board. Tight Ends are kind of like Knights with how they typical run shorter L shaped receiving routes.
Na it's just raw physical power and quickness. the coach makes up the strategy but I doubt anyone is good at chess
I am New to this Game.
Thank you for Sharing.
Greetings from Cabo verde Islands.
Cheers
this was one of the few sport that i had no clue about but was intrigued by how passionate the fans were about it. Thanks for the video it helps alot to understand a few things prior to watching a game.
Thanks, glad this video helps!

I love how American football rules are explained by an English commentator 😂
Ironic isn't it?
@@NinhLyUK better than any american ever did
@@Arnav_j7 Neither of us has seen EVERY attempt by an American to explain it, but you are probably right. It's easier for an outsider to see what isn't obvious and needs explaining. Insiders make way too many assumptions about what everyone already knows.
Thanks this helped I'm English but I love American football
+james bright Cool, thanks James - I'm glad you found this video useful. Be sure to share this video and subscribe :)
This video explains it better than the NFL explantation video.
"Thrown for the temmate to catch"
*shows whitten dropping one* 😂
I'm a football newbie going into high school with no prior knowledge and it has been very helpfull
Thanks, glad this video helps!

thanks for this, i now kinda sorta get it, i feel like an american now that i understand this whole football thing
It'll take you a while to get, but once you start watching games, the rules will become clear.
Dude, I was born and lived in the US for 20 years, and I STILL don't understand how football works.
I'm an American and let me tell you, it's pretty strange even if you grew up with it. I love it, I support my team, and I watch every weekend but I still find myself baffled every now and then
Julie A. I'm already American and the white team aka the dallas cowboys are my team
American football*
I like that the coach can dispute the refs call. They should have that in rugby
I've watched so many movies about this sport but never understood it until now
Everytime I feel like watching a new sport I visit your channel for these type of videos. Keep up the good work, greetings from Brazil!

I'm an American and I have to say this is very good. When did you start getting into American Football?
+Bat5hade Excellent question! Early 90's on UK television, they used to show the American Football on Channel 4 every Saturday. Watched the Cowboys a lot, am now a Cowboys fan (sadly). That's my rather uninteresting story! Thanks for stopping by, be sure to share this video and subscribe :)
Ninh Ly
My condolences on the Cowboys, but at least they were an honorable team unlike the New England Cheetahs. I thought you guys over the pond hated the American Gridiron sport, but I just looked at your channel and see a lot of Europeans who seem fascinated by it. Is American Football becoming a game that you all play now?
Bat5hade No, not at all. England is full of NFL fans. But as far as actually playing the sport ... well ... let's just say that we're a little backwards compared to the standards in the US!
Ninh Ly
Lol.....Well it does help to have played it from the time you were a little kid to now. We have Pee Wee Leagues here for children and they learn the basics at a young age. Just looking at your channel I am now learning that you all like the sport. In the past I thought you hated it. Who knows maybe you guys can come up with the EFL (European Football League). However I don't think the word football sums it up for you guys....
+Ninh Ly You think you have it bad, try growing up in Ohio and being a Browns fan
In every NFL game, there is a review team in Art McNally GameDay Central in New York - reviewing all requested video reviews on field. NFL rules are very complicated - wait until you guys get into Safety, fair-catch kick down etc etc...
Ummm okay.
A perfect explanation of my favorite sport. Well done!
Thanks bro!

If only more people outside of the US knew how the sport worked it would be far more popular.
EasyEasy123 Hence why I made this video! American Football can be pretty straightforward if it's taught properly. I hope this video helps millions of people understand. Be sure to share this video and subscribe :)
EasyEasy123 American football will always have a hard time matching rugby, Australian rules football etc. in certain parts of the world. There's the expense of all that padding and protective clothing for a start. Rugby is played by men that just require a cup, some tape to stop their ears getting ripped off and a gum shield. There's a reason US football gets called "big girl's rugby" by some people.
Well thats just ignorant, rugby is a completely different game. They have to wear pads in American Football if rugby was as dangerous they would also have to wear pads but they dont.
The hits in American Football are 10x what they are in rugby.
It is made up of intense plays, of course there's only 20 minutes.
20 minutes of exciting action and 90 minutes of mainly a ball getting passed around are not the same thing.
EasyEasy123 It is the high-speed collisions. In rugby, the rules and the way it is played means less high-speed collisions occur, and thus pads are not needed.
I’m watching this to learn how to play Madden 20, my first ever Madden game. Lol
Cool, glad this video helps.

Madden 20 is bad but i mean its okay to play it first
must be young
I am a brazilian that learnt how to speak english, I am learning how to play some american sports, such as basketball and football, and I can definitely say that american sporst are amazing!
So happy to find this video. After living in the USA over 32 Years and the mother of a son who played football, I decided it was time to learn the game for this 2022 superbowl . Great explanations.
And for you that say it's "dumbed down" or "they stand around and do nothing", it's probably the most strategic sport you can play. You have to be smart and know your position and the job you have to do. I could go on and on but I guess non-Americans will never appreciate it quite like we do. Understood though. But, I still wouldn't shut it out until you've played it and/or at least watched an entertaining college game.
I agree, people think its just glorified wrestling but it has a lot of strategy to it and is really intense if you understand the rules.
Cole McDowell Foreigners will never get it. Soccer sucks
Cole McDowell It's not really that foreigners don't get it (for the most part). Let's be honest here....It's their bias and distaste for Americans. I watched the other video of the CFL (Canadian Football League) and everyone was saying it was better....What? Obviously American football is superior. And I love soccer, I think it's great. So no bias here on their sports.
Curtis Garner Why don't you lead by example? Why don't you try and understand soccer? Maybe in return they will learn to appreciate the beautiful strategies of American football.
no
I didn't know american football at all. Thanks guys for this video, everything is clear now.
Yohan Miclot You're welcome, I'm glad you found this video helpful. Be sure to share this video and subscribe :)
from a football player, this video is great and explains a lot about the game.
There's a reason I am watching this on the day of the Super Bowl. 🤷🏽♀️
I watched my first superbowl this year and it was one of the most entertaining sporting events I've ever watched. I've always wanted to get into (american) football, and after the Superbowl and with the new season starting, I'm committed to giving it my full attention and effort, but like many, if not most Europeans, I knew fuck all about the game, so this really helped me in not feeling like a phoney!
Awesome, thanks Cata - glad this video helps you out. Be sure to share this video and subscribe for more like it.
Super bowl 52 was....quite the show.
i'm an Aussie that is sick of having nothing to watch on TV and thought the NFL looked interesting.
Great video, really easy to understand and to-the-point but also thorough.
Thanks a lot
+Shani Black No worries, I'm glad this video helped you understand American Football! Be sure to share this video and subscribe :)
Thank you very much, I'm a soccer/NBA guy, but I always been intrigued by the NFL plus the season just started so perfevt timing. Salute from France
