Watching this while watching Dallas vs Patriots right now. Im not american so I never understood the game, now I understand it better, at least the basics
Going to watch this to prep myself for watching Super Bowl LVII tomorrow. I only know the very basics such as 4 attempts to get 10 yards or something like that.
This video has been very helpful in my understanding of football. I’ve been watching games for years and no one has ever been able to clearly explain downs and scoring. I believe it’s because they don’t take the time because I ask when a game is playing. 😂 Now I have a better u understanding ; thank you.
That line is just a television graphic, it’s not actually on the filed. The yellow line shows the viewers at home the distance that is required to get a “first down”
I will watch this at least three more times. Makes so much sense, I just want to memorize it a bit more. Going to my first pre-season game with my friend. I am not a football fan but there is still time to convert... Lol
😊 Good to hear that you understood it! Do you think it has potential to become popular in Europe? If there is a match in europe would you go and watch?
It is very informative. From this video, what is the next video should I watch to get more idea about rules and team which you have mentioned in this video?
Happy to help! That is the reason I created this channel because nobody was really explaining the sport in the detail it is required to start enjoying sport. Thanks for recognizing that! 😊
He can run from anywhere. Mostly they go through middle but they also go through side sometimes. They mix it well so that it becomes difficult for opponents to guess. Do check out the below video where I covered in details how can he run. ruclips.net/video/ll_Y51XjWs0/видео.html
They have set plays and the blockers will intentionally try to open up specific holes that the team coordinates beforehand and the runner goes that way unless things go wrong and he has to improvise
The runningback can run anywhere…. in runing plays, it is the offensive line job to create a hole for the running back to run through… in passing play, the running back can also block to protect the quarterback or become a reciever… the role of the running back depends on what type of playcall the Head Coach or Offensive Coordinator wants to do…
If a team scores a safety point, does that team get to start from the end zone again or do they always start from 40 marked line? And if a team gives away a safety point even within 4 chances, do they still have the chance or is the turn passed to the other team? Nice video 😅😅 but these got left out.
After safety they would start from kick off. If they are within 4 chances and safety occurs then also they would do kick off. Does that answer your question?
The only question I have is, what is a "first down"? I hear that all the time in games even after a player with the ball gets brought down to the floor more than once on offense so it confuses me as to why it's always called a first down.
Only backwards. Only one forward throw from behind the scrimmage is allowed per play, but backwards passes (called “laterals”) are allowed whenever. Laterals are pretty rare to see, though.
Conversions only happen after a team scores a touchdown (and are always required after a touchdown). There are two different options to score a conversion: 1.) The team’s kicker can kick a 33-yard (30m) field goal. This has about a 97% success rate on average, and scores one point. A touchdown plus extra point scores 7 points. 2.) The offense has one chance to score a two-yard touchdown. They can do it by running or passing, just like regular offensive play. This has about a 48% success rate on average, but scores two points, making the possession worth 8 points. Teams will almost always do the 1-point conversion due to the very high success rate. The two-point conversion is usually only reserved for when a team is down by 8 points and other complicated special cases. Hope this helps (Edit: the information about the ball being put at the 3-yard line for conversions is the old rules. They’ve changed recently.)
Conversions happen after a touchdown where the offense can go for a risky 2 points by taking the ball into the end zone again. They're less common due to the high risk of failure
@@ayushshukla9_ It’s because American football originally used feet and hands combined, but the feet part was removed because the fans preferred the hand part
They start from 10 for 1st down. When they start the play it's possible that ball was behind the starting line when play ended so in that case they will start from the place where play ended (which is behind the starting point) hence now they need to move more than 10 yards, does that make sense?
@@lovepoem7753 Great Question! In American football, only one forward pass is allowed per play. However, there is no limit to the number of lateral or backwards passes. Does that clarify your doubt?
Once offense team score a goal (goal or touchdown). Offense team kicks the ball off to the opposing team, just like how game starts. Does that answer your question?
@@TheSchoolOfSports and one more question, sorry i just started learning nfl. How to determine the start of the down (the line of scrimmage) for the offense team?

does that mean only the quarterback is allowed to pass, or is it more a convention than a rule? Same question for the first ball switch. Does the ball have to go the the quarter back or could it go to anyone? good videos btw
yeah the ball can be snapped back to anyone in the backfield. as for passing, you only get to make 1 forward pass from behind the line. almost always you'd usually just want to snap the ball straight back to someone who will immediately pass it forward. so that guy is the quarterback. on the other hand, backwards passes are always allowed.
Not exactly..The QB can lateral pass the ball (meaning, passing the ball behind the line of scrimmage) to a any receiving corp, and the reciever can “pass” the football to another reciever who is running a route…. The passing reciever must do it behind the line of scrimmage… if he pass the ball beyond the line of scrimmage, it is a foul and a loss of down…. This is usually considered a trick play…
Is it called 2nd and 3rd because it is their 2nd attempt to go over the 10 yard line but they only need to go over 3 yards because of the 1st play? Thank you to anyone who answers 🙂
That is correct. 2nd attempt and 3 yards to go. If on the 2nd attempt, let’s say the team on offense gets pushed back 10 yards by the defense, then the next play would be 3rd and 13 (so you’re in a worse position than you had originally started).
The “sudden death” OT in NFL was eliminated… OT rules are now, the first team who score a touchdown wins the game…. if the first team who has possession of the ball and only scores a field goal, the other team has the opportunity to try to score a touchdown… If both teams did not score a field goal on their first attempt, any team who has the ball possession can now win the OT by scoring a Field goal…

When / how does conversion happen? Can someone explain it?
Conversions only happen after a team scores a touchdown (and are always required after a touchdown). There are two different options to score a conversion:
1.) The team’s kicker can kick a 33-yard (30m) field goal.
Hope this helps
(Edit: the information about the ball being put at the 3-yard line for conversions is the old rules. They’ve changed recently.)
Conversions happen after a touchdown where the offense can go for a risky 2 points by taking the ball into the end zone again. They're less common due to the high risk of failure

Nice

Is it called 2nd and 3rd because it is their 2nd attempt to go over the 10 yard line but they only need to go over 3 yards because of the 1st play? Thank you to anyone who answers 🙂
That is correct. 2nd attempt and 3 yards to go. If on the 2nd attempt, let’s say the team on offense gets pushed back 10 yards by the defense, then the next play would be 3rd and 13 (so you’re in a worse position than you had originally started).
@@civichoo6017 wait if the offense got a penalty on 2nd down, wouldn't it be 10 yard penalty, replay 2nd down?
I'm from India and I'm tired of Cricket, so came here
Thank You
What do you think of this sport?
The “sudden death” OT in NFL was eliminated… OT rules are now, the first team who score a touchdown wins the game…. if the first team who has possession of the ball and only scores a field goal, the other team has the opportunity to try to score a touchdown… If both teams did not score a field goal on their first attempt, any team who has the ball possession can now win the OT by scoring a Field goal…
This makes alot of sense then any others
Appreciate your appreciation sir!
