Reid is a master play designer. Once teams eventually start copying the 1-4 tactic, the Chiefs will dip back into their endless well of plays for more coverage-busting magic. Many teams have gone away from the 2 deep shell against the Chiefs this season thinking Tyreek is gone and they could press man, but in the relatively short time Mahomes has been in the league he's learned how to beat any coverage with Reid's system and arguably the most capable WR room in his Chiefs tenure. You're always going to be wrong defending this offense, so your only chance is getting them to make mistakes.

    • @user-qv4fp9vm8u

The only chance against the Chiefs is basically what the Titans do:
      * Take away the deep shots and stay disciplined, do not improvise.
      * Be physical against everyone but specially on Kelce, chip him on every play.
      * Pressure in the middle but play contain on Pat.
      * No missed tackles.
      * Make them hold long grueling hard fought drives
And we all know even then the Titans havent been able to take them down in the playoffs

The problem for other teams with the 1-4 is that they do not have (a) Mahomes and (b) Kelce. The Chiefs are also deep at TE and have competent journeymen WRs. And the Big Red cherry on top, is Reid devising variations of the formation.
So, yes, other teams might try to copy this, but no recipe is complete without a master chef who knows how to use his ingredients.

While I agree - having the speed MVS and Hardman bring ensures defenses can't attack those underneath zones and it makes going man a tricky decision. Juju can run the same inside routes Kelce does - so it gives you another big body with good hands not afraid to get hit after the catch. Chiefs are not as explosive without Cheetah - but Reid has finally figured out how to attack the defensive scheme that gave Mahomes so much trouble last year. Also helps Mahomes now firmly understands you can't go YOLO bomb as often as he liked to 2-3 years ago.

Seems a bit...uncharitable. I have no stake in the Chiefs or even in that division, but Andy Reid is 19-16 in the playoffs + has a ring.
      - In terms of playoff win %, he's in the neighborhood of Tom Landry and Don Schula, who are considered greats.
      - Among active coaches, the only one who is obviously better is Belichick, though Sean McVay can make a case as well at 7-3 if and only if he sustains that.
      - Pete Carroll and John Harbaugh are comparable in terms of win %, though have visited the playoffs fewer times.
      - 19 playoff wins is pretty incredible; he is presently tied with Don Schula for 3rd overall, and will almost certainly surpass Landry's 20 before he retires, leaving him #2 overall to Belichick in NFL history.
      - Speaking of Belichick, he + Brady as the best coach/QB combo in history are directly responsible for Reid not being outright better than Landry by now. I suspect that w/o Belichick, there would be some narrative arguing whether Reid is GOAT for playoff coaches...in part because he'd most likely have another 1-2 rings and a better record, and in part because there wouldn't be a >30 playoff win monster sitting in front of him.
Reid is worse in the playoffs than the best playoff coach ever...and not that much worse than anybody else in NFL history...everyone with a significantly better win % wasn't anywhere near as prolific. His all-time record is excellent in regular season, still good in postseason, and by splits he's improved as a coach over time. I suspect he'll forever be in Belichick's shadow, but he's a **** fine coach in his own right and most teams would love to have him at the helm.

Subscribed after this first video for me. Great work.
One thing this video really cements in my mind is that Kelce can read a defense better than most QBs. He understands the coverages and knows where to go on broken plays to be a consistent outlet. The 13s game against Buffalo was actually two Kelce calls. He called his own number up the seam and Mahomes hit him, but he also call Hill's number knowing his route would open up the space for Hill right behind him. Those two plays put KC in field goal range.
But I may have to back off the "Mahomes is the most effective runner" take that Nick Wright threw out. Mahomes is really effective, but Reid is truly scheming up plays for Mahomes to scramble for big gains if the play breaks down. As long as he goes to the weak side of the defense, he's got tons of yards to pick up.

The issues they present become less frustrating if you don't play man so the pick routes/mesh aren't available, but the disadvantages of having 2 deep don't also get exposed and you have more bodies in the box to cut off screens/picks/runs that have become common. The next evolution of hybrid defenders is going to have to grow up fast and front fours are gonna have to become elite to help with this or you'll go back to seeing the deep ball/4 verts/chip wasp stuff annihilate defenses. It's a tough situation for sure.

Great break down. The only way any of this happens is with a QB is so mobile like Patrick. He is hard to get your hands on and he releases so fast it's near impossible to stop him. Reed and Mahomes are a great combo!

Hit the nail on the head. The reason why Mahomes is the best QB in the NFL right now is the combination of his arm, his legs, and his vision. Allen has the arm and legs but not the vision; Burrow has the arm and vision but not the legs; Hurts has the legs and vision but not the arm. (Greatly simplified, of course.) Mahomes is the only one active who is elite with all three elements.

building on to the comment at 12:00, Wylie is a guard. You can see in that play that he has no clue how to defend the edge, like he’s almost scared to be out there. He’s been on the team for a few years and has been decent, but with injuries landing him in the RT position i really think coaching needs to look at sliding him back in and giving someone else a shot

    Fantastic Breakdown !
My only comment is that although the NFL is a copycat league, you need the personnel to do so.
Example: Patriots don't have a QB with legs, TE with RAC, or a 4-3 receiver.
I am thinking of creating a chart based on personnel to see how many can adopt the 4-1 sets with their current roster.
If any teams are considering adopting this in their repertoire moving forward, will make for some surprising G.M. moves in trades and drafts in the near future. Definitely something to keep an eye on when these deadlines come around.
My short list of viable copycats:
    Miami
    Philli
    Bills
    Bengals
    49-ers ?
    Tampa ?
(? Denotes a QB with limited running )

We’ve all heard of the butterfly effect. This is the mike leach effect. RIP, captain. Mike leach absolutely changes the way football has been played since he became head coach of texas tech. Leveling the field of talent, from high school to the nfl. It took him a while to get the nfl with his coaching tree and his players to see his vision, but it’s evident now. Welker, amendola. Manny Ramirez. Crabtree. Kingsbury. Unfortunately,
Players like graham harrell, who knew the system so well, wasn’t given the chance to exploit the defenses. Mike leach is by far the the most prolific X’s and O’s coach to ever grace the game at this current moment.

The Chiefs defense needs to learn to shut the first down and the shut the run down by never taking their eye out to football if everyone goes where the football goes the runner doesn't have a chance you can tackle him at the scrimmage line

Not every qb can make those throws to beat this coverage. Its smart. It also forces mahomes to be accurate which he was with the exception of several deep shots he overthrew several times. Im sure he will clean that up this year. Not having to cover orlando browns shit against speed rushers should help this...good luck cincy! Joe kool is going to get blindsided because he doesnt do 12 step dropbacks like mahomes to cover tackle deficiency. I worry joe kool will get hurt when brown jr. Whiffs against good speed rushers which he will see many of. Mahomes has had to cover tackle stink since fischer so im not worried about the new tackles mahomes will cover it up like he always does long as that interior line keeps playing like they have and can stay healthy!

Kelsey is maybe 6'5" 260+, so covering him with a 6'0" 200 DB is damn ridiculous. Put a 6'4" 250 LB & Jam him as he releases you'll see the difference. Knocking those receivers off their routes, instead giving them a Free release off the line. Show them different sets altogether nearly every play. They can be slowed, but with the right personnel & schemes, be shut down!
