  • Can I make 31 characters-one for each day in December? I'm gonna give it a try! Not only that, I'll make a video for each one and give each game an "unreview."
    The rules are:
    1) I have to like it,
    2) I have to have bought it, and
    3) I must do my best to use E-Prime, a linguistic tool that forbids me from using the verb "to be."
Can I make it? Let's find out!

Ars Magica is the business. 5th Edition does a great job of brining it all together and presenting it in a more approachable way. Love it.

Been playing Ars Magica off and on since 1989, it is still my favorite role playing game

Ara Magica is one of those games I’ve been chasing for forever. Wizards have always been my jam any time I can play them. Just feel the GM problem so hard with this.

Balance is just about how much one contributes, and I am not just talking about combat, than it is about who has equal amount of the spotlight. Lord of the Rings would be infinitely less impactful if Gandalf simply teleported Fredo to Mt Doom at the start, or if Gandolf stood in front of every attacking army and Thanos Snapped them. Fredo is an important character because he is seen a lot, and every decision he makes matters. Just as much as Gandolfs.

You are reigniting my passion for roleplaying games after a loong pause. Thank you for your work.

You mention the fellowship of the ring not being balanced but they actually are because each character's power is inversely proportional to how easily they will be corrupted by the ring and by Sauron's other magical relics.
For example Gandalf who is the most powerful member of the fellowship is afraid to even touch the ring in case he becomes instantly corrupted, Boromir touches the ring once and it breaks his mind, Samwise (the real hero of the story) can carry the ring for a while and only have the slightest corruption from it which he can then will his way through.
Or the Palantir is another example. Saruman and Denethor, both powerful characters, become addicted and corrupted by them immediately, Gandalf is afraid to touch it, Aragorn would become corrupted by it but specifically uses that to draw Sauron's attention, and Pippin is able to touch the palantir without giving up the information on Frodo and without becoming addicted to it despite having no preparation and no knowledge of what he was getting in to.
I've no idea if this was intentional on Tolkien's part, but it is a pretty obvious form of balance.

    Boromir is a warrior-prince, a general of a small kingdom's armies.

whoa, whoa, that Latin's only fake insofar as that construction is very simplistic and has no petitioning of spirits or other such nonsense. :^)

Half the stuff I know about Medieval Europe's superstitions I know bc of Ars Magica. One of my fav spells thematically was an Intellego Ignem one, that let you see everything a distant fire illuminates. Especially cool once you remember that's how Ancient Greeks thought eyesight worked - eyes emit light which touches objects and that's when you detect them - so you're basically seeing everything the fire would be seeing, if only it had eyes. (Never played, but read a rulebook obsessively before even knowing quite how TTRPGs worked, lol)

Aragorn is a Numenorean, think Atlantis, they were the first great nation of Men, and are somewhat superhuman - they live for centuries, are naturally fairer and stronger than common men, and possess some other vague supernatural qualities.

Aragorn is the descendent of THE last great human king, who fell big with temptation of dark side. Aragorn basically represents Mankind in Tolkien's metaphor. And his elven maid represents the Holy Spirit (since they're all Christian metaphors). Hope this lazy comments helps a little. Also, Sam the gardener who gardens the garden for the master gardener, is a custeau too.

Very interesting. Seems similar to the WoD Mage games magic system. Can the magic be toned down so the actual system be used in other games such as D&D or Fate?

IIRC Ars was one of the big inspiration sources for Mage.

You could easily port it across as it's basically DC skills. But honestly try Ars Magica itself, it's so full of cool things that make play very different.

And not only the mechanics but also a lot of the lore is connected with Mage/Vampire etc...

Not surprising, the people who would go and create the WoD worked on the first ed of Ars Magica to the point some view it as a proto WoD. That's not axactly true as the setting is vastly different, but here and there you find some trace of the relation such as Tremere being a magician House in Ars Magica (and with some ties to vampiric legend to boot). White Wolf got the right on Ars Magica and tried to tie it to WoD making it the past of Mage: the Ascention at some point (the 3rd ed if my memory serves me right).

I wish some one would do a series on the character creation process of Ars Magica. I get a little confused with the rules with aging and how it works.
