  • Can I make 31 characters-one for each day in December? I'm gonna give it a try! Not only that, I'll make a video for each one and give each game an "unreview."
    The rules are:
    1) I have to like it,
    2) I have to have bought it, and
    3) I must do my best to use E-Prime, a linguistic tool that forbids me from using the verb "to be."
Can I make it? Let's find out!

Back in 1984 Pacesetter's Chill actually came out with several innovations: SAVE was an organization of monster hunters, an excuse for the GM to say this is why you're all (player characters) fighting monsters. This is something Call of Cthulhu lacked at the time.
Also, Chill introduced another first: playing the Terror in Warwick House as a game system learning scenario. Playing the scenario helped players learn the pacesetter action table. Back in the day this didn't exist in other rpgs, and it's another first for pacesetter.
And finally, the pacesetter action table came out prior to Marvel Super Heroes which uses a similar system. A one stop action/combat results table where all rolls could be adjudicated in Chill. Another first.
Clearly the gang at Pacesetter were listening to the then game market and investing as needed. All of these things combined created a fun game, and easy system, and a great setting for your games.

Last week of this October I ran a one-shot of this version of Chill, with 3 new players and one player who had played the game before. They went up against a Ghoul. One character went critical, two were injured, but the ghoul was defeated. I love this system!

I’m grinning at this video for serval reasons including because I also took the Chill monsters and their evil way disciplines over to Call of Cuthulu. Had a lot of fun porting a Chill mummy and a Chill Bast - my CoC players were “WTF is going on? Why is the temperature changing? What’s this mist? Oh **** he can see into my soul and find me anywhere in the world” :-)

Imagine.... You slowly drift out of sleep to the sound of scratching at your bedroom door. As your thoughts get clearer, you remember there is no one else at the house, no pets either, maybe its in your mind? As you come fully awake the sound is now undeniable, so you take your colt 45 from the bedside drawer, slowly go to the door listening to the scratching, scratch scratch.
You throw the door open and theres nothing, even the sound of scratching is gone. You close the door, got back to bed light a cigarette, and switch on the bedside lamp......... And the scratch marks are on the inside of the door.

I loved this game. I ran a weekly game with 4 friends. They were a select group from my larger D&D game group, and they weren't exactly good friends before, but after they had been through the crucible together. I played the soundtrack from Prince of Darkness each week. It was great fun.

Chill... Could be about relaxing in Beaches listening to reggae and ska and living the good life.

There was an edition where the print was unreadable in places, unless that was a different game...
Shout out to stalking the night fantastic, a clunky silly game with a similar frame.

I really liked this video. It's sad this game never got the traction it deserves, and I think it fits a niche not otherwise filled. It was the first game I ever created a character for. Sadly I don't think I ever got to play.

Man, great logo and cover design! Never saw that first edition before-just the Mayfair (?) one.

Chill was a weird one. It was the first game anyone ever GM'd for me, before I'd even heard of Call of Cthulhu. It was wacky in places, but utterly terrifying. I remember reading in Inquest that it was the sillier version of CoC and immediately thinking that I had to go out and get that, given the experiences my group had.

I'm a bit interested in the new version of the Swedish translation of Chill called "Chock". ☺️

Bogeyman can be hell scary on the hands (minds) of creative people.

I remember stealing the incorporeal combat rules from Chill for some fantasy heartbreaker I never finished, but I can't recall if we ever actually played Chill proper.

The original Pacesetter version was before my time but I came into the game from the Mayfair version with its freaky cool cover. Did the system change much between the 2? And has anyone looked into the recent version that was Kickstarted not long ago?
