Decided to look up the starting date and found that 1220 was first mentioned in 5th edition as the year the game is set in.
The Order of Hermes (of which you're a member) reached its peak dominance in Europe in 1220, after which it became destabilized due to in-fighting and such.
The real late 12th and early 13th century are known for their general instability, making it an interesting period for stories. There was also a rise in folk lore which greatly helps the setting.

Really 23 games real time? And it's still the same Saga? How many generations of Magi have you gone through?

@@NorninTGK we did have A 5 year hiatus, we are on our 3rd or 4th generation of magic, because the originals are still alive, but are all of near archimage level power so challenging them is difficult.

Regarding the Gift and Parma Magica (Chicken Parmegian), the Gift (the ability to use magic) makes you look suspicious, different, nearly hostile to other people including those that have the gift. It does not make you mad or go insane/evil, just look evil to others. In game terms those that have the gift suffer a social penality to all social ability checks. The Parma Magica shields you against that feeling of distrust you have when you encounter someone with the gift on top of being a universal shield against magical and faery powers.

Ars Magica was a big deal for me because I was an undergraduate when it came out. My academic year group started a campaign that inducted the year below and I think, they carried on after we left. It worked extremely well in that setting because for my generation these were our final playground years. Tuition fees and living expenses were payed for by the (UK) state. I was extremely lucky. I could have done with some support of my ADHD.

Love the video but I can't help but laugh hearing your fear how medieval mages would call non-mages as mundanes lol. This is medieval europe and magi are not good people in general, but instead they form an elitist organization that believes it's members are not only superior to normal people but all other magic users and have even genocided other traditions several times and even destroyed one of the otiginal houses likely just as a way to create a scape goat to pin all evil unto, to avoid total collapse.
No wonder God supresses magic in universe lmao.
