Would agree, I would be very interested in a video that purely went into describing the Ars Magica magic system, the pros and cons and what the real playing experience is like :)
I wouldn't say the setting is “roughly” based on Europe, rather it is heavily based on a historical medieval Europe, but seen through the lens of the understanding of the world that people had at the time which mean for instance disease are actually caused by an imbalance in the bodily humors, on top of that is added the supernatural layers: magic, fey, angels and demons all actually exist and influence the world. It’s more prominently hammered by the supplement books, but even with only the core book this world building philosophy of wowing the supernatural elements with the real life historical setting can still be felt through the character creation options, description of magic and brief overview of medieval life presented.
Ars Magica is based in 13 cen. Mythic Europe AD (suggested starting year 1220 AD) as perceived from the people of that time where their belief's are realized: God and the Devil are active participants (Christianity) Angels and Demons meddle in human affairs. Celtic and other cultural Deities may get involved. Monsters lurk in the shadows (vampires, werewolves, ghosts, ghouls, goblins, etc.) The Faery World interacts with humanity There is some loose similarity in the magic system between Ars Magica and Skyrim in that the magic is divided into separate skill sets that largely do not overlap, but they are not skill trees like it is in Skyrim, and Ars Magica Arts have 2 categories, Techniques and Forms that are paired based on the effect you are trying to do. there are 10 forms, this is the 'what' you are trying to affect (air, earth, fire, water, plants, animals, the body, the mind, magical essence, etc.), and the 5 Techniques are the 'how' you are affecting it (creation, destruction, perception, mutation/alteration, control). Of course, being a Latin inspired system, all the Arts have a Latin name associated with them.
I'm 9 minutes in and I haven't heard them talking about the actual magic system itself except for how much it's like Skyrim
