    8:15 reminds of that groove by the Isley brothers used in "Won't Do" By J Dilla and recently in "them changes" by Thundercat. Great work as always Nate.

    Just stumbled upon this after commenting on your latest poll for the next "who played it best," where I suggested Skip Step.
    Skip Step is absolutely one of my favourite songs to jam to, but I wouldn't get too caught up in "playing it the way its recorded" since Nate Smith himself approaches it so many different ways. My favourite is the NPR Night Owl recording, which has some killer right-hand straight-sixteenth sections and he also does this totally rad "straight spangalang," which is like the accented straight 8th pattern with the cycling accent inverts that you talk about in the video, but on *steroids*. Mastering that really helped with my independence (Well, left hand lead is mastered. I can play the pattern at +20% tempo. Right hand lead still needs more work), however the fast straight 16ths are still kicking my ass. My goal for this month is to get to where I can play straight 16ths on the lead hand with accented quarters for the entire duration of the song. One of my goals for the year is mastering Rambo, which I'll admit is presently a bit beyond me.

    Hey Nate. I gave you a shout out a few weeks ago on a blog. The topic was “what does playing in the pocket mean?”. I got a ton of responses when I offered to help a small group of drummers understand this. I referred them to you and Stephen Taylor. I sent them some links to y’all. Hope this works for you.;)
    I even clarified that you are the other Nate Smith that can demonstrate what pocket means. Ha ha!
    I even went further to tell about your tutorials on H town’s own Chris Daddy Dave. Believe it or not, there are some here in Houston that don’t know!!! Makes me want to🤮. Anyway, you are still wise in the ways of the force Master Obi! Take care brother!
    Ps. That track of Nate sounds to me like that Oz Noy track from a few years back. My old drum teacher had us do the play along “Just Groove Me”. I bet what you are showing is applicable to that. 🤷🏻‍♂️

    2:44 You can make it more simple by saying it's a bar of 4/4 and a bar of 9/8. Why is it necessary to subdivide it as 3/4 and 3/8?

    • @8020drummer
      @8020drummer  6 лет назад +4

      It's easier for you to count to 9 than to 3?

    • @navehraz4326
      @navehraz4326 6 лет назад

      The 80/20 Drummer I actually got the point about an hour after I wrote the comment... It's more easy to write it in the way i suggested, but easier to count in your way.

      I count to 4 three times, then I count to 5. 16th notes

    • @martin-__-
      @martin-__- 5 лет назад +2

      I actually think this is easier if you count it ”1 & 2 & 3 & 4 & 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 & 5” i get confused when jumping between counting quarters and counting eights

    What do you think about thievery corporation songs?
    Their drum grooves I think are very interesting and great material to deconstruct with that great insight you convey. One song in particular I find so intriguing is "all that we perceive" let me know what you think about it..
    For some reason this groove made me recall that song
