Everyone is here for the same reason. Nate's musicianship is absolutely unreal. There's chop worshippers out there. The kind of drummer that can blow you away with some tasteful musicial indulgence, but ultimatley fit their role for the song. Listening to Nate play never gets old.
Absolutely killin man, tone is beautiful. Your solo on Rambo at tiny desk is seriously game changing, blows my mind every time, love seeing you play with Nate.
He is probably hands-down the greatest band leader I have ever watched perform live. The dude is an absolute monster. I played with the few guys who were pretty good leads, they are always the singer/guitar player I've never seen a drummer lead, and I've never seen anybody lead like this.
HE LIVES IN THE MOMENT SIMILAR BUT DIFFERENT TO GERGO BORLAI. BOTH ARE JUST SOMETHING VERY SPECIAL FOR THIS ART OF RHYTHM. THANK YOU GOD IN THE UNIVERSE BROTHERS AND SISTERS !!!!
I've watched this multiple times and have been blown away each time I see it. However, this was the first time I realized that none of them are wearing in-ear monitors, Nate's timing is just that freaking good, no click, just years of work and great musicianship. I can't comprehend being that good at anything 🤯.
Dude, Mr. Smith’s independence right from the opening is incredible! The shaker, side snare, kick drum THEN THAT HEEL FOOT ON THE HAT? You may not be human sir. One of the best drummers I’ve seen in a long time and definitely one of the coolest, great band, music, musicianship, groove, all over my click bait lately
Right? His technique also helps to get that sound; Nate plays the best rimshots of pretty much any drummer I've ever heard. He doesn't slam the drum like a lot of other players do, but catches the rim just enough to make the drum "speak" a little louder.
Nate's communication with the rest of the band is unreal. His drumming skills and the bands musicianship are out of this world. Would kill to be able to play like this.
First time I watched this, I thought, "Impressive musicianship all around, no doubt, but I'm tired of all this odd-time stuff." Then I watched it again and thought, "That's pretty cool. It actually does groove." Then again, listening even more carefully-and I'm blown away. This is pure mastery.
It bugs me when people whine about writing in odd times because for guys like Nate Smith and Makaya McCraven, it's essential and foundational to their voices as composers, not some cheap trick or lame attempt to show off.

I saw them in concert for the very first time a few weeks ago at the Java Jazz Festival 2023 in Jakarta. He blew my mind. I became a fan. Here was a master musician showcasing his musical genius like no one else can. I've since watched countless YT videos and listen to him on Spotify. Thank you Nate for your incredible virtuosity.
The creativity! Everyone brought their A-game to this performance and had a blast. Bravo Nate Smith and the whole band! (Especially that sax 🎷) Everyone watches and waits for their cue so spotless. Well rehearsed.
So I was drumming in my church for the past few years without motivation. I was just filling the spot until the "real drummer" came. But then I thought to myself why not actually try to learn the drums and develop into a better musician. Saying this to say that I don't know why I watched this. Nate Smith you have helped me realize I better get way more serious and put in some real practice or else I should stick to playing pots and pans. Wow this was simply amazing. Pocket is deep and feel, dynamics and overall musicality are off the charts. Nate Smith you are a musical genius.

really like how he communicates with his band mates while they play.
That's what defines a good band. If you can't hear your mate, there's no connection, no flow. That's why there are lots of bad bands...
One of the many functions of a drummer. Specially a band leader.

Love the way Nate is pushing and pulling the time but, never loses the groove. 21st Century Tony Williams.
Great comparison. Also tasty and groovy use of fast 16ths with finger technique, it gives the music forward momentum!
