I have a 2001 white SH with 76,000 mi and zero rust (in NY). 100% original except radio. I bought it from a friend in 2007 with 24,000 mi. I drove it once so far this year, but it snowed again earlier this week so I have to wait for some more rain to wash any salt off the road again. I felt guilty, so I replaced the original plugs a couple days ago. Absolutely zero oil or carbon. If I hadn't already bought new ones, I'd have put them back in. In my opinion, 98% of the problems people have with these are caused either by kids flogging them unmercifully (esp automatic transmissions), or working on them when they have no clue which end of a screwdriver to grab hold of. I have not seen one how-to repair video of a Prelude on YT that was made by anyone that I would let within 100 yards of my car with a tool in their hand. People ripping parts off and laying them in the yard or middle of the driveway, tools scattered all over the place. Another problem is people putting a bunch of junk non-OEM parts on them. If I seem harsh, remember... They're a Honda. If you have to dick with them all the time, you're doing something wrong. BTW, I'm 69 years old and have owned 4 Hondas since 1989. I've seen and learned a few things. Properly maintained, they're reliable and durable.

I've two 4th gens and loved both of them. The second one I had the previous owner dumped a ton of money into it and the thing was legit fast. The H series engines are decent platforms. They just don't have the aftermarket support and they start off heavier than a Civic so they get overlooked. They're vanishing very quickly. I hardly see any on the road now
Also as a testament to how tough the H series is (the one I'm mentioning here is the H23) the first Prelude I had the previous owner had an actual cold air intake, like he cut a hole in the wheel well and routed the intake right above the ground. Being very young and not knowing shit about cars I hydrolocked that engine, twice. Both times all I did was drain the water and mush out of it, fill it with new oil and kept going. Kept it for another five years and had not a single issue from it.

I went from a 1991 prelude si to 97 prelude base to a 2001 Prelude sh and I fully decked it out but not overboard. Just black on black leather, lowered, full stock lip kit, all the bolt ons from full exhaust to intake to headers and light tint. It was immaculate condition. It was the cleanest prelude ive ever seen and man it drove so nice but it was definitely too heavy but it did handle like a dream and it still had nice power and sound it just lags in the lower gears but once you get into 3rd and vtec kicks in it really starts to make up for its slower start. I was only one in my area with a Prelude and was known as the Prelude guy. I felt really unique and it was so fun. Also the vtec just sounds so amazing in the 2001 sh. Its super robotic very similar to the Rsx. Oh and mine was a 6 speed stick!

I've owned 2 5thgens and a lot of civic owners really spreading the hate. I still have a '99 Nordic Mist with a factory 5speed with factory black leather. The Prelude was the first Honda sports car and they handle great from the factory. That 5thgen in this video is a nice example. When I was in automotive school in LINY they had a black 2001 Type SH with 300 miles that was donated from the Honda Factory for us to learn on(I went to Auto School over 15 years ago).

People say they are too heavy and can't compete but a Prelude just set a FF world record in thr limited class, against gutted K swapped civics and more. Set it with the H22 motor inside still too. They carry much more structural rigidity than the small Hondas (43% more rigid to be exact).
Best car Ive owned and ill never sell it. Great Vtec kick, beautiful design, incredible handling and when set up properly easily capable track car. Mines lowered with nice wheels, exhaust, bolt ons, cams etc. People break their necks looking at it and it gets lots of questions. The H22 sings like no other!
Be warned, prices are climbing. Get em while you can, because people are starting to notice!

I got a '97 BB6. Was my first car, bought it back in 2010, totalled it in 2011, rebuild it since. Here in germany the 185hp-non-4WS is the most common among the 5th Gen VTECs with (statistic from 2017) only 192 units left... we've also got a 2.0-non-VTEC with the F20A4 out of the EUDM-Accord... there are over 2000 around, so... there are more DC2's on the Road than BB6 and BB8 combined.
Imo the 5th Gen is the forgotten 5th "Sports"model of the late 90's... DC2, AP1, NA1 and as a european the CH1 (EUDM Accord Type R with... who guessed it... an H22). And they shoot up in value aswell. Bought mine for 3700€ back then, found the exact same car not long ago, same color, same drivetrain, etc, but with 50.000km (~30.000mi) more on the Odo, for 7300€...

They handle like RWD cars in the twisties as most Hondas from the 90s do. They’re engineered to handle “neutral” which I guess the default would be what RWD cars feel like. You can get oversteer in the corners if you’re a good driver and the car encourages it.

hated no, the h22 was a great engine what people hated was in the SH model it had the atts which is a good feature for a stock or lightly modified car but it held the h22 back for high power. if you got the base model that came without the atts system in the transmission you were able to achieve respectable power numbers. that being said the H series def didn't have as good of a market at the B and D series motors as far as aftermarket performance options go and the H series with an exhaust didnt sound that great its like the K series you have to find the right exhaust to get a good sound out of it. I've had all 3 and the B series was my fav as far as modding goes when I found my 97 prelude 5 yrs ago it was bone stock an older gentleman owned it and I left it bone stock and then the unfortunate happened early this year the upper radiator hose ruptured on the freeway and got hot immediately and warped something internally. was a depressing day I loved that car the way it was and was a great car, something I wish I would have caught sooner to prevent

My dad sold Honda's and had one of these in the SH trim on Demo one summer from the dealership he worked at. He said he had it pinned at 140mph once. My uncle is an american car guy, didn't believe there was any way it made 200hp stock. That demo also had the leather and carbon fiber trim. Fun story, his dealership had a gas pump, we filled up one night and he was doing some stuff at his desk when the other staff shut down for the night. We left the lot and he didn't see the chain across the exit of the lot, chain ripped off the antenna and spoiler . . . they didn't do demos at his dealership too much longer after that.
Accords from that era with v6 were cool. It was probably the best Honda era.

People picked a civic because they wee more common, and less expensive.
If I recall, Prelude weighs more then some of the other honda cars people like to tune which matters to some people.
The Prelude nametag is sort of out of sight out of mind now. A relic from the 90's, forgotten because it was replaced. Like Dodge Intrepid, Nissan Pulsar, etc. nametags that were instantly recognizable but people have forgotten to time.

This owner was correct, the second 5thgen that I purchased came with Black Factory Leather seating/Door Covers and it has the Carbon Fiber interior kit. The Carbon Fiber accents look really good. USDM had 2 versions of the 5thgen...the Base model which wasn't basic by any means but that's what it was called USDM. Then the offered the Type SH model which came with ATTS, different wheels (same size 16"), painted side skirts/lips, spoiler and only came with a manual shift transmission. The manual shift transmission wasn't different from the base model manual transmission due to the ATTS unit. The 5thgen Prelude is one of the best handling FWD drive sports cars of that era.

A girl I use to mess around with back in the late 90’s had one of these in a maroon color. It was lowered on Jamex springs and had some 18 inch Niche wheels that were black faced with the lips color matched to the car. It was an auto but man was it a beautiful car. Great memories cruising it at MiniNats in Pigeon Forge,TN. This one took me back.👌🏽🔥🔥
