- In this video I drive an example of the fifth and final generation of Honda Prelude and I ask if there was a reason Honda canned a long lived line.

I bought one recently and I can't believe how much attention it gets. Almost every day I have someone comment on it from the next car over at the traffic light, or in the parking lot, etc. Very few people know what it is, and I think the lack of low-slung coupes on the roads these days makes people think it's something more exotic than it is.
Had one in 2007, thing was surprisingly quick for what it was. first car I took to 220-230~ kmph too
You never see them now. I can't remember the last time i saw one.
Had one in 2020, for a year and a half. Your right. The attention I got was insane!
Welcome to the Lude family.
My bb6 breaks necks in the u.s. and she's a bit of a diamond in the ruff. I've started doing some replacements recently and I'm looking into new coilovers
how tf is it a grand dad car
I have always adored that particular Prelude model. It has great proportions & is a very elegant design for a GT coupe'!!!
My favourite generation for sure
It's aged well, hasn't it.
Technically, it is still the “latest/newesr” model of Prelude .... LoL
Agreee… people think my prelude is a modern car and also they believe is something else then a honda
Beautiful interior
Holy moly this car is freaking mint, kudos to the owner for keeping it in this condition and still bringing it out to drive
It looks exceptional doesn’t it!
Not only that, at 5:07 you can see it’s got almost 200k miles. It’s in very nice shape
I had this car but rubber trims around the door and window rotted away at around 100K.
I don't know how this owner kept it so fresh.
Maybe he had them replaced.
Other than it burning oil and issues with heater core, this was one fantastic car!
You are spot on!
I don’t care what anyone says, but these VTEC engines perform beautifully (especially on track) and sound fantastic. Don’t get me started on their reliability 👌🏼
I love how you can hear VTEC kick in when it revs up in the video lol. Just so pure
The fifth gen always looks like a modern version of the third gen, the square headlights representing when the pop up headlights were up on the third.
I think it's a perfect car....looks awesome....quick and fun to drive with just a few bolt ons....still decent on gas....I think it's 1 of best Hondas ever
Back in the early 2000s when everyone wanted Civics and Integras, I wanted the Prelude!. We had the Prelude Type SH here in the States.
That VTi sounds great and looks fairly clean.
I love the the preludes. Too many people deemed them heavier civics, but I find them to be awesome gt cruisers
The handling was superior in the Prelude despite being heavier, with double wishbone independent suspension just like the S2000 and a very low center of gravity. I have an AW11 and VW GTI along with my Prelude and the Prelude still handles best.
@@matthewgallant3622
My friend had an 85 prelude. I rode in it a few times and could immediately tell The lateral handling was nothing like The American cars id driven.
I own a 2001 Prelude here in the States. I’ve been in love with this car for 5 years now and it’s gone through lots of transformations including being supercharged now. It’s a fantastic car and was also my first real performance car. By the way the interiors varied a lot. Mine has carbon fiber pieces not the wood grain. And black interior.
God I love the Prelude. I'm more of a MK3 fan but this is still immense.
Owned an azure blue/green 4th gen with the 200hp jdm h22a and trans and suspension goodies. Beautiful car and great old school VTEC sound. Weighed in at 2750 pounds and was a lot of fun. I wish our safety standards weren't so draconian so we could make a car like this again.
I had a 97 5th gen. First car I ever bought on my own. Worked 2 jobs to get it. I grew up without much, my parents didn’t ever drive anything like this, so this car was everything to me at 20 and made me feel accomplished. I’d like to buy another one now. I’ve owned nicer since but everyone has that one car that’s special and this was mine.
I understand. That is the S2000 for me.
Do it
The gear change on this era of Honda was just lovely. The V6 engine of the same era was also very nice. The Honda Legend was a particularly nice car
The legend that followed is a pretty good motor as well. It had that special audio system that played sound waves that opposed the cabin noise. I remember the reviews criticised the engine for developing it's power high in the rev range which is like criticising a dog for being.... A dog 😂 I like my Honda's to enjoy a good wringing out 👍🏻
If they did a wagon legend I'd have had one high on the list alongside the w211 I went for last year. Always loved a legend when I was younger, just for the name!
My friend had one and we still refer to it as “legendary” and then laugh like idiots. It was an amazing car
@@actionarslan As someone who had nothing but mk3 Escorts and Vauxhall Astras, it was absolute luxury and power when I finally bought one.
@@James-oo1yq yeah that's one hell of a step up. I never understood why Honda's were so expensive until I got my EJ. Just pure engineering, unparalleled reliability, double wishbone all round, light weight. That perfect balance of just enough modern engine management to get reasonable power and economy but without going crazy over the top complicated, same with interior electrics and nothing a good head unit couldn't bring as an upgrade. Even the D16Y7 without VTEC revved to 7200RPM and was happy to do it all day long. I'm going to stop now before I start looking at the classifieds
The 5th gen has always been seen as very cool here in the states. Sport coupes died here not long after it's discontinuation and you could get these 10 years ago for next to nothing. If you said you had a prelude you were instantly cooler than all other "Honda guys" unless they had an s2000
True. The Prelude is not a Honda guy car either. Honda people love the Integra and Civic, and tend to see the Prelude as something they can take the motor out of. True car people love the Prelude for everything it is. Phenomenal handling, great power, beautiful lines.
That was a gorgeous vehicle when it came out and even still today it looks incredible. One of the greatest Honda's of all time, a truly special car.
I wish Honda would bring them back, but I know they won't. I have a 2015 Accord coupe instead.
I had a 2.2 VTEC on a 97 plate but sold it for a mark 1 Prelude which was my daily for the next four years...
I had two of these, a 97 auto and then a 2000 5spd manual. Still to this day one of my favourite cars. Back then it was a real head turner and fantastic to drive.
In my opinion is still is
I had a used 2001 blue Honda Prelude that I bought for $24K with little over 30,000 miles back in 2004! Had that car for about 8 years and it's still my favorite car of all time! I used to take that bad girl on the back roads and unleash that 2.2 liter 4 cylinder VTEC! The Prelude was just too much fun! It handled like a dream. Especially for a front wheel drive car! And man that 7400 rpm redline!
An amazing looking car, I just bought a 24 year old Mercedes slk230, still looks amazing.
I traded in my 1993 MR2 for a 2000 Prelude years ago after spending tons of cash trying to get several mechanics to fix an issue with the MR2, including the local Toyota dealership, all of whom failed. While I enjoyed the Prelude it certainly wasn't as fun to drive nor did it turn heads like the MR2. Having said that it was a nice car and I do miss it. It's a solid, fun car with good power. I've since bought another 93 MR2 and watching this vid makes me want another Prelude.
One thing to mention though. The rise of prices for Japanese sports cars throughout the 90s into the 2000s helped kill off sales as did astronomical insurance prices. I rarely see this mentioned when discussing the demise of the MR2, 300ZX, Supra, RX7 and I'd say the Prelude as well.
I have an 87 MR2 and a Prelude, and it’s funny my Prelude gets attention everywhere I take it. The MR2 also but not as much as the Prelude. Which is strange to me since the MR2 is a true sports car and a more unique looking car.
Would get one if I wasn't living in a condo, Prelude theft is horrid in the US.
I had an 88' best handling car I've ever owned and that manual gearbox perfect
Wow... never would imagine seing a 5th gen prelude being reviewed in your channel. I've owned my 97 prelude since 2000 and still loving it. Thank you for the honest review
The 4th Gen Prelude was one of my favourites back in the 90’s!!😌💯💯💯👌🏾
The problem I had with this car was actually with its pricing and just as Jay said, Honda made several competing cars, plus the S2000. I preferred the Accord V6 coupes. As I type this I am sitting in the last Accord coupe Honda is likely to ever build, the 2017 EX-L V6. After 30 years and 7 Hondas, this is my last Honda. No V6, no coupes, no manual, no me as a customer.
I definitely loved the styling and engineering of all Hondas and the Prelude back in the day.
Cheers to all the people that appreciate what Honda used to be!
I was lucky enough to get one of these in Australia new back in 1997 and loved every minute of my 7 years with it. I only sold it because I was moving overseas. The H22A is an especial highlight and I can't believe how lucky I am to have recently been able to get here my dream 90s sedan - a 2002 CH1 Accord Type R.
cool cars, nice to drive and still look fantastic. I have a 5th gen Prelude, swapped with the H22A7 from the Accord Type R
Still have mine that I got in ‘00!!🙋🏽♀️ She’s still goin and still hella fun to drive! 🚙💨
Had one, same colour, same h22a8 engine (red top) with motegi bodykit. I miss that thing so much, sunroof, cruise, heated seats and PROPER vtec!
There is one of these that I use as a marker of where to turn into my driveway because the owner parks on the same exact spot every single day. Just a beautiful car.
I like the stainless muffler this one has, very crisp sound.
I’ve got a 97 TypeSH I’ve had since 2011, ATTS still works too even with over 200k miles on it, which is incredibly rare as the ATTS is not cheap to fix and that’s IF you can finds parts, which you pretty much can’t.
But oh man is it a dream to drive on some twisty backroads, add in sticky tires, stiffer rear sway bar and it just goes where you point it.
Also I bet the driver has the height adjustment all the way up for the seat, it’s a turn dial on the side of the seat, gives you probably 3-4 inches of up and down adjustment on the seat.
This Prelude also has the Motegi package which were wheels and lip kit all around.
Whatever the owner did for the exhaust, it sounds really good, better than my Mugen twin loop.
As an American, its interesting seeing the more luxury oriented trim on the interior with the beige and fake wood...most (if not all) of this model sold in the US were designed to look more "sport" themed with gray/black interiors and no wood at all. It was always billed as a lower, sportier offering compared to the Accord Coupe, which did have a more luxury, touring exterior/interior theme similar to this European car. I'd be curious to know the different demographics that bought this car in Europe...tbh, I'm not even entirely sure who was actually buying the Prelude in the US being born in the early 90s, and not noticing Preludes (or cars in general) until the late 90s and early 2000s when it was a pretty niche, somewhat slow-selling car already
I own one in Canada. It burns oil. Like a lot of oil, I’ve gone through 5 litres of oil in 2 months of regular driving. But it’s a great car and is fast if you keep it in vtec zone. It’s never let me down and looks great. Somebody thought it was a supra one time.
Sounds like piston rings or the cylinder liner believe it or not.
One of the best looking cars around.
My family have had 1st gen, 3rd gen and 4th gen Preludes, all fantastic cars.
The 4th gen still rates as a favorite car of mine - I loved the space ship interior!
Lovely car and such a good colour!
I love the car, fell in love with it from how it sounds. But what tops it off for me is the passenger, Flat Eric!
Wow that thing looks almost showroom fresh!, very impressive with that milage. Credit to the owner.
I know right!
It's cool to see more and more Prelude reviews pop up on the internets. I also used to have a 5 gen, owned it for six years (2010-2016), J-swapped it, put in a 6-speed manual from an Acura TL, but it met an unfortunate fate - a big truck crashed into me. My passenger and I were fine, but the car was totaled. The engine was also broken pretty badly, but I was able to salvage the transmission (which went into my new car, a 2001 Honda Inspire that I still drive to this day).
Ive had two of these over the years. A black 1997 example and a blue 1997 example. Both were one owner cars.
The black one I modified heavily with the usual work including a Tanabe exhaust etc etc. Sold it to some chap, he bolted a turbo on for the next 5 years, took the kit off and sold the car. No mechanical changes at all, ran like it always did before and after the turbo. And it was on 150k.
Amazing reliability.
I was always a fan of the Prelude especially the 4rd-Gen. Listening to that exhaust note... beautiful.
This car has been kept in such good condition. Credit to the owner of this car. Great review James. Keep up the good work!
Love this car. Looks amazing for the age. Good review.
I love these cars so much but for some reason they get a lot of hate here in the states, even from other Honda guys.
I absolutely loved my Motegi BB8 Prelude. Superb car with a superb engine. Upgraded the brakes to ATR brakes; lightened flywheel and new OEM Honda clutch; 17" Buddyclub alloys with T1R tyres, Apexi WSII exhaust, DC Racing manifold & D2 coilovers; it was a superb driving car & I regretted selling it TBH!
Great video to get all this come swimming back haha
I owned one of these in Australia 20 years ago. It was an Australian market only VTi-R spec car which went really well!
Here in the states we had a Type SH with a bit over 200hp I think. It was a great looking car. Kind of a spiritual successor to the 90's nsx in appearance.
Modern classic. I have so much love for this car.
I love that car! I've always wanted to own one.
Look at the condition of the car! Amazing! Such a lovely colour. Good review.
I had one since new for 8 years.
It was a great car.
Beautiful car!
Honestly I think that thing looks unreal, one of my all time favourite cars
If you ever get a chance to also drive a 4th gen Prelude, you should try that as well! Despite sharing the same basic chassis, they seemed surprisingly different, at least the examples I had felt different to me. Also the interior of the 4th gen is something to appreciate for its uniqueness. You gave the best description I've ever heard of 5th gen Prelude handling; it wants to go straight like an arrow and when you turn it hints it might want to resist, but never does. Kind of like dancing with someone who is a good follow. The 4th gen Prelude by contrast (though also a good dance follow) instead of feeling like straight like an arrow feels straight like railroad tracks - when you turn the wheel it feels like the rails are curving. The example I had had blown shocks, and the springs are soft anyway, so body roll on mine was all over the place but the wheels stayed ever firmly planted despite that. I can't wait to see how it drives with poly bushings and working dampers when I finally finish rebuilding it.
I’ve got a jdm sir s-spec,that model was fitted with a limited slip diff and the h22a engine as in the type s you mentioned. The seat is mounted lower than uk spec car’s therefore no problem with headroom. I’ve owned 2 uk 5th gen cars but the jdm cars, sir s-spec and type s are the ones to own. Brilliant cars
I also have a very hard time with those front lights and it has stopped me acquiring one when I had opportunities to. It really bummed me out too because, headlights aside, it's one of the best-looking coupes of all times (affordability considered) in my opinion. Headlights aside, I would put it on par with the e36 coupe in terms of looks. I'm still thinking of them every time I'm window shopping.
My buddy had a black one when we were in high-school, it was a fun car to cruise around in too
Granddad car?
Crazy.
Here In Finland preludes have always been for 18-25 year olds. (for the ones who could afford one)
i really really really wanted one of these in 98. ended up with a mk2 golf gti. the golf turned out to be a wonderful car. no regrets.
I absolutely adore this car!
I used to drool over these back in the day. Jay - were you supervised with the view count on this one? I was. Interesting though as I’m sure today’s generation wouldn’t give it a second look. I suspect we are from the same gen.
One of these, plus a Jackson Racing supercharger, was a great combination for fun.
Also a crankshaft seal leak shouldn't cause an Engine Rebuild. The crankshaft and cam seals, as well as the harmonic balancer shaft seal are mandatory replacement parts with a timing belt at a dealership.
I have one with a Jackson supercharger it’s fantastic. Just the right amount of power.
Owned one of these Preludes for over ten years. 2000 model Aust spec H22 in the same maroon/cream colours of this one. Sometimes I miss it, such an underrated car
Sold my second generation 1.8l MX5 and bought a low miles 1997 VTI-R (H22A motor) and haven't looked back since. Combination of sportiness and practicality with a great sounding exhaust note - very happy with my 5th gen Prelude. Surprised how many twenty-something guys go mad for the car's shape and the sound!
the same where I live. If not for the Honda badge, some people would not even know it's a Honda
Wow! Such a well kept car!
I met the guy who owns this in April at japfest and this car looks just so good in person
A lovely car, always liked its understated looks.
Wow, what an amazing car :)
I love my 2000 prelude, also good to note the USDM Type SH was also fitted with the ATTS system. Unfortunately, if you have one of these models, which I do, you can’t just simply fit a lsd like you can in a base model usdm 5th gen. It requires a complete engine and trans swap to go to a standard lsd
I have a soft spot for these as they were great looking coupes. The ones I have seen for sale on Autotrader recently all tend to be automatics or the slightly less powerful versions.
I remember seeing these, what seemed like everywhere back in the late 90s, walking to and from school etc. Always really liked them, they always seemed really futuristic. It's a pity Honda and other manufacturers don't make cars like this anymore and many vehicle types are waining due to everyone wanting SUVS
Amazing car!
I am 6”4 will I not be able to fit in this car? Because I really want one and what if I just change the seats to bucket seats? Then it can be lowered right?
Yankee here - I drove the 3rd Gen Prelude with 4WS and was obsessed with that technology - explaining it repeatedly to friends importunely.
I had one of these, 2.2 with manual box. Had to get rid due to tin worm and difficulty sourcing parts. It went like hell and was surprisingly comfortable a nice to drive....
I miss mine every day. Had a '98 in this colour with cream leather. 4WS was amazing, and the engine and handling was subtle but fun.
The Honda Prelude. My all time favorite Honda. I loved them so much I owned four of them. But I’m referring to the 4th gen.
Great job with all the info in this video.
Such a great car and kept in so good condition by the owner. Very good review.
That exhaust setup is perfect. Would love to get mine sounding like that
This was a really good episode. I miss the grande sports coupes as well, but I guess the engineering required to address the safety issues like frontal and side impact protection got in the way of keeping those platforms in production. You don't ever want to crash one!
That looks in damn good nick for 200k miles. A real survivor.
It’d be a lot better if you guys drove on the right side of the road .
Love this car and this review! Good job James!
I think what's great about the Prelude line is that particularly the last three generations seem equally loved. Not by the same people necessarily, but those who are passionate Prelude fans seem pretty evenly divided between those three generations, with none really 'hating on' another. The fifth gen, to me, is timelessly beautiful, and I think it still looks good in modern traffic. I especially love the headlights that were clearly inspired by the third-gen in shape, but of course modernized non-flipping pieces.
4th Gen was the bollocks trust me!!😌💯💯💯👍🏾
@@bezzyranx9839 Yeah, maybe I'm contradicting myself, but the 4th gen would be the one I'd buy first as well. It's just so fantastically '90s inside and out.
@@accord_aero_r that aggressive styling of the 4th gen also helped, I reckon
When I was shopping for my prelude 6 years ago, I looked at 3,4, and 5th gens. I wound up in a 5th gen and no regrets. And within the Prelude community I see plenty of the other generations in amazing shape as well. I love them all.
I absolutely love this car!!! Amazing condition and such a good review!
The Prelude is one of Hondas best cars.
Yep it is!
Weary of if it runs too hot because head gasket goes out very easily
I enjoyed owning one of these cars. At 6'4" I never found the headroom an issue and it just seemed to fit me nicely in terms of leg room. I like the americanish styled retro looks - even the front headlights, which are quite unique. At the time of release, compared to the 4th gen, these cars took a bit of stick, but nowadays I'd say the 5th has aged much better than the 4th. Disappointed that you didn't really talk about the V-Tec kick. The Vti was already a Type-R equivalent car, compared to the standard 2.0.
Always liked these ones. A buddy of mine is high school had a 4th gen and later a 5th gen, I've always preferred the 5th. IIRC the American ones didn't have 4WS for the 5th gen, only the fancy pseudo-LSD.
Anyway, dig your videos, nice work!
My parents owned a first gen back in the day. Dark green with cream interior. Beauty!
As I grew up I realised the car was nut much more than a civic with an added miniature boot, but as a young child that car was awesome, cool, and different!
Superb car. Love the colour of it. Kept in excellent condition especially with age of it. Very good review. Keep up the good work James!
What you described is how pretty much all HPAS systems work, most variable systems (like servotronic) use an electronically controlled valve to vary the system pressure & therefore assistance in conjunction with the torsion scroll valve you described.
That was a great review and it was a lovely vehicle for you to test! Thanks for the insight!
Loved the 4th gen, my grandad had a 2.3 new when i was a kid that left a lasting core memory, it looked great to the teenager i was, then when i could drive i bought the 2.0 and later a 2.2 bb1 import with the famously dodgy 4ws ecu, unfortunately the arch rot got to it having already been sorted once and i sold it on but i'd own another in an instant, great engine and that dash! as quick as the type r's of the time but half the price. if only they released a type r variant! the 5th has grown on me as i've got older, hmm...
its good to see the prelude finally see the love they deserve!
Good review. I've owned mine for almost a decade now and still love it. People bang on about how they're not rwd but once you drive one on a nice b road you soon get over it very quickly.
What really killed these imo was the price. The original invoice for mine was over 27k. And in the late 90's that was a lot. They weren't designed to be raced or taken on tracks. They were meant to be luxury coupes aimed at the clk and 3 series. But at that price tag very few were willing to spend it on a honda. Not to mention the accord coupe and legend hurt prelude sales as well.
The positioning within the lineup was absolutely bizarre.
Putting this design and the rear wheel steering on an Accord coupe might have been sacrilegous in a way but maybe it would have been the correct decision.
Mines Awd :D K swapped.Next ones gona be pure rear.
I'd rather spend the 27k on a Honda Prelude than on a bmw...
@@sickbastard82 Well obviously I agree. I think this generation in particular has aged really well. Compared to an e36 bmw for example the prelude looks way more modern.
@@sickbastard82 I wouldn't. In a brand new modern (ish) car you're not worried about reliability 200k kilometers down the line. The bimmer has a nicer interior, looks almost as good as the prelude, is rear wheel drive, and makes more power.
JDM fanboying is a sickness of modern car culture, judge a car by what it actually is, not what people say it is. 5th gen Prelude is one of my favourite cars but for that price, no way. They're too expensive again now because of the JDM craze so knock it off before one of these sells for a number that starts getting reactions like the Type R Integras did five years ago
That generation Prelude was a really nice car. Unfortunately it was just so expensive for what you get. I remember when it was being sold. It was so close to the price of a V8 Mustang. It was no comparison. Mustang V8 by a long mile.
This was not a granddad car in the Southeastern U.S. where I live. It appealed to 18-30 year olds who wanted the sporty look in a Honda package. But as others have mentioned, it was too expensive in comparison to other alternatives.
Also a southeastern American here. Honda for the most part in Europe appeals to an older demographic. It’s noteworthy that the tan interior wasn’t available with a red exterior over here, just the green in 97-98.
It's wild that the Prelude has been gone now longer than the name was on the market...
