JDM cars of the 90's and 00's were cool for the value they were when compared to exotics of their time. Unfortunately they now command prices that would get you into more prestigious brands - while this doesn't make them less fascinating for what they are, my excitement is dulled knowing many people (enthusiasts) won't ever get the chance to experience them because of the price of admission.
This so much. I know deep down that it's impossible personally to experience one of these jewels of JDM because of the absurd price tags nowadays. It hurts, especially when having grown up in the 90's with cars like the R34 GTR, MK4 Supra etc being the icons and cars i looked up to as a youngster. Heck, even non-knackered Evos & STI's are approaching very high price tags.
Im currently in the process of deciding which one i actually want to buy. I can buy a r34 gtt and have it imported over her by December. Or i can wait an extra year and pay extra for an r34 gtr in bsb or mp2 and also wait an extra 2 years until 2025 for it to even ship out let alone arrive. But im leaning more towards putting a downpayment and keeping a gtr in japan until its kegal to import. Ive thought of bringing a r32 gtr but it costs the same as a r34 gtt im just stuck but i got time before the gtr is legal, i just mainly dont want prices going up even higher to where even high earners cant get it😔

Thanks Jay for a great piece. I'm lucky to have bought a Bayside blue R34 GTR V-Spec when they were reasonably priced. But as it is one of the 80 cars sold by Nissan UK, it has around 400 bhp as most had the original ECU remapped by Middlehurst Motorsport before being sold. They also had HKS Super Powerflow induction and exhaust, Connolly leather interior and downgraded ('e' marked) headlights. NISMO also insisted that all UK cars had engine oil coolers as they could be used on Autobahns. (That's a total of 4 oil coolers!) I used to use it as a daily driver, and sometimes, it still goes to the supermarket. It has enough boot space for a long weekend for 3 or 4 at a push, and once you get into the back seats, they are very comfortable. If i had any sense, i would sell it for a huge profit. But what i would replace it with? I'm afraid the R34 was the last of a kind. Enough electronics to give that lovely longitudinal streight six plenty of go, but not too much that you lose feeling through electric steering and traction control/anti slip etc. (I did delete the rear wheel stearing.)

This is one of the videos I've secretly wanted you to make in ages. I'm so grateful that you did this, what a car and what a well put together video, thank you 👍🏻.
An R34 in bayside blue always reminds me of playing Need for speed underground in the early 2000’s with my then 7 year old son. It came in that colour as standard. The R33 is actually my favourite GT-R having first read about it as the replacement for R32 in Autocar magazine in the early 90’s.
I had an R33 GTST and now have an S15 Silvia, but every time I see an R34 there's something about them that makes me want to push harder to do well in life and see myself in one. Great video!
Totally agree James. Cracking colour. It really is THE colour for the car. The last time mine was in the garage, the young lady behind the desk said: “Oh, orange, we don’t see many of those” in a complimentary way, not the why the hell didn’t you buy the grey everyone else does! I think the pattern is slightly changing thankfully. With new cars we are starting to see a little more colour again. All these things go in cycles, don’t they? It’s just the latest fashion. Personally, I’ve always just bought what I like and in particular what I think suits the car.

R34 GTR was listed for sale in NZ back in the day, not sure how many were sold. R32 GTR was sold here in Australia and I remember seeing one at Nissan as a kid, memory was it costing $5,000,000… it didn’t but it may as well have been. Got to own many skylines over the years in the early 2000s, never thought much of the R34, preferred the Supra much more, there was a saying in Australia back in the early 2000s, skylines were like arseholes, everyone had one. Cool video!
There is something about the Skyline GTR that just draws you in. I've not seen many up here in Rural North Yorkshire but the ones I have seen all made me salivate. I think they are a genuinely great looking car. Stylish with a definite look of aggression. These are bloody superb now but at the time must have made the opposition look very awful indeed.

It’s a great car, but if folk are really paying £180K for a Nissan these days then the classic car market has surely gone nuts! I expect we’ll be seeing a significant correction quite soon, given the general state of things and projected direction.
Interior: Still far better than what came out the last 20 years. So it may not be expensive looking but put together well. Quality is not only having expensive leather on the surface... Money was put into other things. That it´s what about. Nice to see a stock one.
I used to have a GTS-T R33 - just one turbo, and only RWD - but otherwise still a brilliant car. You're right that the HICAS was a little unnerving. It basically did nothing at all at low speeds. But get it loaded up with about half a G lateral and suddenly the rear would move out, like you'd just run out of grip. Stay calm, keep your foot in, and it settles and "locks" and becomes stable and yeah - it's pretty cool. But the temptation to twitch your right foot is very strong - do that and it's Code Brown time. It was very much a "go round corner faster" thing, and not a "try to hide the fact that you have a big fat car" which is what they all use it for these days.
I raced a R34 in bayside blue when it was first around in the 2000's, pulled up to a nice chap at the lights at 2am was talking to him about the car and he said do you want a race, i was on a tuned scooter 172cc beat him in the first 3ft or so then if went roaring off haha was great to see one being driven like that. Should review a Nissan Laurel or Cedric relative to the year of the Skyline. Also, review a Nissan Datsun 280C 430. Would be a blast. Great review on an iconic car. Thanks for sharing with us.
I owned quite a few JDM cars in the 90'/00's. The GTR is a nice car and I wouldn't say no, but you would need your head examined to pay that sort of money for one. Most of the point of a grey JDM was performance per pound.
Hi James lovely video I am a jdm fan and petrol head , I always wanted one but sadly just out of reach even at £25,000 when I really started to appreciate this marvellous car, anyway good luck to the luck owner and I do hope he enjoys it to the max.
I’m with you - in Bayside Blue the R34 GT-R is a dream car. And this example is probably the most perfect example of what I would want if I was lucky enough to buy one. (FYI, the R33 has to be Midnight Purple to be a dream car too. Although they also look great in white)
Always preferred the midnight purple but can not deny that Bayside Blue is iconic and still absolutely beautiful. I prefer the looks of the s15 Silvia but daaaaaaamn the r34 is still in my top 5 JDM!
I love the 90s JDM cars. I had the privilege of owning a 91 Nissan 240 SX SE hatchback and a 91 Supra turbo as a teenager in the 90s. The car in this video is my dream car. I dream of owning a Bayside Blue R34 with all of the Z tune/Omori factory bits. I blame the PS1 and Gran Turismo lol
R34 is my personal favourite however it was a boss with a 680bhp R33 who blasted me up the A320 which made me respect and love the skyline what an exquisite, indulgent car
@@nzuncovered1845 I'm not colour blind what I meant is that midnight purple at least here in Australia was the hot colour that everyone wanted not the blue although I'm not really sure that it was available on every model but a lot of them were repainted after minor damage and everyone wanted purple because "is the colour " ( of choice)
As a way to prove James' point, one of the bigger RUclipsrs I follow is Mav. He's best known for his truck camping videos out of his 2011 F150. He lives in Duluth, Minnesota and often lives out of that truck (modified to make it more comfortable) while either fishing all over the area, or taking long road trips to visit new places to do the same; not too long ago, he went on an epic drive all the way down to Baja California. And yet, not too long ago, he picked up a gift to himself: a brand new Mercedes-Benz AMG G63S. Watching that video, of him first showing his journey on YT, from a small kid, to getting into the trend of finger-boarding, to moving on to what he does now, and then going to get the car, was awesome. And it's clear he loves his car.
Great car, great video, but make no mistake the R34 (and Japanese sports cars in general) Bubble does appear to be bursting, UK sellers have stock sitting unsold for months and Japanese auctions are not meeting these high valuations, the reserves are not being met and cars aren't being sold. I've been watching this market for a couple of years now and had commented earlier today but it was scrubbed (presumably due to links to other YTers substantiating these claims) I'm happy to send them to JayEmm /others as there's a decent story waiting to unfold here.
And no I'm not just salty because I've owned an MR2 turbo for nearly 20 years and it's one of the handful of JDM cars to not have massively increased in value! 😂
@@MilkmanHero the US economy was doing well from the previous president and rich kids had money to spend on the R34 they grew up dreaming to see in person from Fast and Furious. That’s why prices went ballistic. Now that the economy is trash absolutely nobody that wants one can afford these six figure prices. Big collectors already got their cars years ago when they predicted this happening so there’s no demand from them. I imagine in 5 years prices will come down to earth once people realize there’s tons and tons of R34’s out there.
My brother had a black R32 GTR non vspec with racing harnesses. It had 5/6 spoke chrome deep dish wheels and that rb26 revved to 8k, the straight 6 was gorgeous to the ears burbling down the A13 from Limehouse to Dagenham 😆 and he also had a few r33's in different colours but for me the r32 will always stand out

I prefer the looks of the s15 Silvia but daaaaaaamn the r34 is still in my top 5 JDM!
Midnight purple is also an incredible colour for one of these
Big diff bayside totally
I love the 90s JDM cars. I had the privilege of owning a 91 Nissan 240 SX SE hatchback and a 91 Supra turbo as a teenager in the 90s. The car in this video is my dream car. I dream of owning a Bayside Blue R34 with all of the Z tune/Omori factory bits. I blame the PS1 and Gran Turismo lol
R34 is my personal favourite however it was a boss with a 680bhp R33 who blasted me up the A320 which made me respect and love the skyline what an exquisite, indulgent car
Midnight purple 💜 is the colour. Australia 🇦🇺 loves JM
That's not midnight purple it's Bayside blue, completely different paint code
@@nzuncovered1845 I'm not colour blind what I meant is that midnight purple at least here in Australia was the hot colour that everyone wanted not the blue although I'm not really sure that it was available on every model but a lot of them were repainted after minor damage and everyone wanted purple because "is the colour " ( of choice)
@@stephenchigwidden7504 Oh yes I see. Yes I agree midnight purple was always my favourite colour since the R33 on Gran Turismo 1 or 2..
This along with the Pikes Peak nutter Gran Turismo game legend cars. What a machine!
Yes Jayemm it is brilliant
You can tell the owner drives this, no show pony. And I love it!
Looks phenomenal.
Gotta agree... Bayside blue 👌
Thank god it hasn't been riced up. Apart from Z-tune nismo bits. But I'd have it vanilla, looks cleaner. Great car, great review.
Ah, memories of Gran Turismo 2
They look great in midnight purple to
@Por Qué? Depends which midnight purple on the amount of flip.. there three versions... Midnight 3 is probably the most iconic
I absolutely LOVE this car, but the price they command is too rich for me. I am perfectly happy with my S2000!
My brother had a black R32 GTR non vspec with racing harnesses. It had 5/6 spoke chrome deep dish wheels and that rb26 revved to 8k, the straight 6 was gorgeous to the ears burbling down the A13 from Limehouse to Dagenham 😆 and he also had a few r33's in different colours but for me the r32 will always stand out
Great review. Just want to add; technically, yes, you can fit two adults in the back. But it is unbelievably cramped!
I'd love to see a review of a GT-T, GT-ST, or even a manual Stagea RS, to compare to the GT-R.
Nearly bought one of these back in the day
Fine car indeed 👍. To the list of Japanese legends I'd add the Subaru Impreza and Mitsubishi Lancer Evo
One of my ultimate dream cars! 😍
Bay side blue is such an iconic r34 color. But the silver is criminally underrated.
Nom bloody nom 😝 epic epic car
Awesome video 👏 amazing how much these are worth now but it makes sense
Great car drove one when they came out my uncle had one . I have Toyota celica vvti t230 mrk7 1999 completely standard apart from new shocks .
What a stunning example just brilliant 🚙👌👌👌
