As someone who used to be a huge car guy that has shifted to the motorcycle scene, i feel like that's where most of the gear heads have moved to. Yes you find the random hot head at a meet and someone is always talking trash on others builds/bikes, but it feels just like the old car meets before all this nonsense started. we all hate electric as there is 0 use case for an electric motorcycle as a daily bike and most of the community is extremely helpful when it comes to needing help, as most of us have been down and out before. There's nothing like being stranded in the middle of the highway due to a flat or out of gas on a bike and a multiple people ask if you need help as at one point in time we all will need the helping hand to get us going again. Do i miss the car scene? Yes, absolutely. would i go back? No. The friends I've made and the places I've been on a bike have truly changed how i see how man and machine can be one.

(I was the only car guy in my family/friend group so didnt have older relatives/friends to take me to meets). By the time I was able to afford my first car, around 2020, 2021, the scene was in its current state. It's devastating but at the same time, I still meet a lot of cool car guys and make a lot of genuine car guy friends, even when finding meets thru facebook or instagram. If you ignore the noise, the social media etc, you can definitely still find the cool, real car people, including guys my age and younger. I turned 25 last month and have been a true car enthusiast since I was 15. Having owned almost a dozen cars since 2015, I have noticed quite a few changes since then. The costs associated with car ownership have seemed to increase exponentially, insurance is a great example of these increasing costs especially for young people who drive newer cars. Combine that with the observed difficulties Gen Z has seen entering the work force and it all begins to make sense why younger people are opting to not own a car. It is simply not a priority anymore given the substantial expenses. Having owned two cars at the same time in the past, I have now downsized to one car and prioritized investing for the future instead of spending it on cars. Of course, the goal is to do more car stuff in the future but it will take time to build up the assets to fuel the budget for my typical car shenanigans. Until then, I am primarily messing around with motorcycles and mopeds keeping costs to a minimum. I am also planning to go to some autoX events next year with my daily driver, it is very important to support your local track. Keep on the grind and be financially literate, cars run on money.

I'm currently a senior at Tennessee Tech University majoring in Mechanical Engineering and minoring in Automotive Engineering, and I'm graduating this coming May. During my time here, the industry has been dead set on indoctrinating us in the idea that electric cars are the future. Despite their efforts to convince me, every point they make makes me question its legitimacy more and more. On another note, I'm blessed to be out here in the hills and mountains where the roads are twisty like roller coasters. While there's not many tracks around my area, it's nice to be able to take my hot hatch out once in a while and just send it on these roads. Also, since I'm in school, I don't have much free time, but when I do, I like to go the Nashville and Knoxville Cars and Coffees. While the scene has changed a lot over the years, it's great to see at least a few men and women of my generation still caring about cars. It may not be as many as your generation, but it's still there.

We go back to the England car culture end 1990s and early 2000s, and for us these were the prime days of the modified car culture lifestyle. Weekends were spent on mcdonalds and retail car parks checking out each others rides, listening to cool music, seeing the girls and just having a good time. Seems from 2014 it resembles a very similar time in around 2004-2007 when people started to call us ricers and thus people started moving towards stance...more clean, lower, wheels styling than wild bodykits and neons. Since then I've spent my entire life documenting the global car culture, getting to know of other countries enjoy their passion and we are all the same, which is so cool! We've even started creating our own print magazines to bring back that old school vibe to....having the print copy is so much more than just scrolling through social media as it stays with you :) Great video, well put together.

I’m a younger enthusiast, in my 20s, and I have friends my age who do not own cars because they cannot afford one. As someone who does own an older enthusiast car, buying replacement parts is getting super expensive, not to mention that the quality is a complete dice roll.
Night meets in my area however are doing ok, they are organized and work alongside local businesses and will turn people away if they are doing something stupid. Local police will even sometimes attend and they don’t ticket people at the meet for mods.
Information about cars has never been more accessible, but at the same time the prices are making things way less accessible.
I didn’t attend local meets for most of the summer because the weekends were always spent trying to fix something on someone’s car.
I currently couldn’t care less about any new cars, my preference has been 90s or older for a while now though.
The barrier for entry is high, and it’s mostly the cost of ownership of a car on top of the cost of living. Some things are better than they were 10 years ago, some things are much worse.

As someone living in a major metropolitan area where the nearest track is still 3 hours away, the only local "scene" is the night time takeovers or street racing. Aside from the obvious unsafe conditions of spinning cars, these takeovers have become a hotbed for drug dealers and local gangs to hang out, so they're even more unsafe than a typical takeover (if that was even possible). The only car enthusiast "events" that I can bring myself to go to are Sunday morning cars and coffees, which are dominated by wealthy supercar owners and I've been made to park in general parking as my build of a 335i BMW doesn't fit the rest of the scene. We used to have a local group that would go out and cruise together at night, but with the police presence in our area hunting for any modified cars that could possibly be takeover cars (Despite us all having blatantly clean, polished cars that obviously aren't spinning in circles) we regularly get pulled over, warned, and then stalked for miles until we call it a night and everyone goes their separate ways. I can't afford to move to an area with a more positive scene, and frankly I wouldn't want to given my entire family and friend base are in the area where I am now. The Mid-Atlantic Car scene, which used to thrive with the existence and community of H20i, is effectively dead for what I have seen, and I don't know that it can recover. Idiot takeover /swimming kids have given it a bad name and cops bully any enthusiast, good or bad, until they're depressed and shut in like me and my friends. Its truly sad.

Yes there is always hate but I feel like people we're much more respectable towards each other........((We can all agree stanced cars are ridiculous))) at car meets and car shows there wasn't stupid takeovers and sideshows...... And it wasn't about the clout........ Or who has the absolute highest ridiculous horsepower number...... it was about building a car that you liked an experiencing that with your friends and sharing it with the car community.......
I've built over 30 Hondas since the early 2000s and used to go to our local street races here in Seattle used to be over 500 to 1000 cars every weekend ever since 2020 the takeover sideshow generation has ruined it and will kill the local street racing scene for the first time in 70 years since my grandpa was going in the 1960s
I know for sure that the Honda scene was much much bigger during the early 2000s up until around 2016..... The Honda seen / import scene with some of the biggest I've ever seen out of every single state (been to every state and even Mexico and Canada) definitely had one of the biggest car scenes here in Seattle and Pacific Northwest in general once California started to crack down on modified cars
It's just not the same as it used to be social media and take over and sideshows clout among other things have definitely ruined a lot of the car scene
Yes it is nice how much easier it is to make horsepower with our cars but I feel like if you're not making the absolute ridiculously high horsepower number these days than your car is not "cool"
I remember having just a bolt on 200+hp NA hondas was enough to keep up with a lot of stuff on the streets!!
Definitely missed the days when we could have car shows or good old street racing without takeover sideshows fights shootings drawing attention from the police making the rest of the car community look bad....
LASTLY THERE IS SO SO MANY.... People that aren't even real car enthusiasts they're just doing it for social media and pay someone to build their cars and know absolutely nothing about them and strictly drive it just for clout!

I'm lucky that my local friends group never got into posting to social media or trying to grow outside ourselves. Sure, we're small town, but it does keep its own charm about it. Biggest lesson I've learned from being a part of it for so long is that social media can help you get connected with people, but you really do need to be picky about the people you decide to keep company with. A small, tight-knit group can last a longer, and can be far more rewarding than joining a large group meet.

The biggest barrier, in my opinion, is simply just the cost of entry. Everything has gotten SO expensive that cars just aren't a priority not just for young people, but for most people more broadly. I loved my slightly modded MkV Jetta GLI, but only being able to afford a tiny POS apartment with zero space to work on cars meant that when it had serious issues, I was forced to have someone I didn't trust working on it. So ultimately, I decided to replace it with a boring ass commuter vehicle that is stupid easy to work on and gets 35+ mpg because I only have one parking space and absolutely need reliable transportation for work. I hate it, but it just works when I need it to.

Loved cars since I was a kid. Plunged deep in to the car world when I bought my 2013 WRX new at age 19. Went to WBM a few weeks later. I had a second family and made a bunch of car friends that year and the year after. NFS 2015 and NFS Payback were big. 2018 happened and the car community in CT died down earlier than the main states like CA, FL and TX. A bunch of my friends either moved or felt like they had to "grow up". The ones that stayed bought family cars or "professional" cars and left the car world behind never looking back. I'm glad I lived it but the deep dives in the past gives a sense of sadness. All I can say is I'm happy I lived it while I still could and didn't end up growing up with the shitheads of now ruining the sliver of car culture existing today. I repainted it, did the wheels and had a few things done to the engine, I know I was able to keep up with the boys that had mustangs and few other cars. They would be so pissed about it.
Sadly I can't imagine teens this day in age being able to score that cheap, with a car that has low miles and at least a V6 like I did.
Even as a 31 year old woman, I bought a van as you said have to grow up, but I made sure that even had a V6 at least in it. However, I am thinking about getting back into cars with my husband. I watched a lot of youtube and self taught how to work on and modify my car. I still have my first car today, but my collection of cars has only grown. A point that I see a lot of youtubers miss, is that there is a lot of guys like myself that stopped going to meets and never have social media. While its true that the car culture feels like its dying out, but there are still a decent amount of people who are building cars in their garages, but you'll most likely never know about it unless you know them in person or happen to see them drive by on the street and/or track.

David, I'm sad to see this isn't monetized. I love your video essays, they're possibly one of the most niche, and unique, video styles you do since no one talks about this discussion.
So let's talk about this for a moment. I'm 35, been into car culture since 2009, and I briefly got "out of it" from 2015 - 2017. And then again from 2019 - 2024. This year I wanted to jump back in, fix my 350z (There's a fun project, HR swap with VHR built block, custom mid-mount turbo kit, etc).
What inspired me again, especially for all of that? A few things, actually. MF Ghost, is possibly one of the larger ones, as it got me back into re-watching Initial D, then Wangan Midnight. But an even bigger reason was driving home one night with my partner, and seeing a bunch of cars in a parking lot hanging out.
PLP, "parking lot pimpin", is still a thing, at least in Buffalo/Niagara Falls, NY. People are still going to meets at night, and I'm aware of Cars & Coffee being larger than ever at the (pretty much abandoned) Eastern Hills Mall in Clearance NY, a short drive away from both the aforementioned cities (15 - 20 minutes).
Rochester, a city that use to be known for the crazy race scene, is still booming, and there is still a ton of younger, and older, generations into cars of all kinds.
Although Social Media has ruined so many of my classic favorite things, and even put "political spins" on things that otherwise never use to be, the one universal agreement those in this hobby has is that we all have a love for cars, be it driving them, looking at them, modifying them, working on them, or just being around them -- the concept never changed.
I never thought we were going to go "all electric", but I see a lot of people, for years, have been fear mongering that. I see more auto manufacturers going a more hybrid approach, and I see a lot more in the future focusing on the 'gasoline' sports car, and the 'EV/Hybrid' every day car, leaving that "sports car" as the treasure -- their flagship to showcase not just their robust technology, but advance design principles that translate across all platforms.
That being said, I don't see this hobby diminishing. I just see a lot of younger audiences jumping into it a lot less, primarily due to the expense and time consumption. I'm hoping the next 10 years will be a drastic shift in mentality across the board, and potentially by the time I'm 45, maybe the automotive industry will shift from SUV's and "trucks" to smaller, lighter weight economy focused EV's, slightly larger mini SUV hybrids, and a flagship sports car. And maybe the manufactures will lower their costs by simply adding less useless technology into the vehicle, and start making the vehicle interconnected with the person, rather than disconnected.

Indeed, what you've said about reviewing EVs is quite accurate. Additionally, you'll come to the same realization as some of us have: these days, speed is _useless._ EVs are being manufactured and sold almost under the same principles as a smartphone. "Oh so car guys like fast cars? well then, here's an EV that can do 0-100 in under 2 seconds! it'll be super popular with the performance cars crowd!"
Well, that's only half of the equation. Like you've pointed out, we care about _engagement_ and _driving dynamics._ Accelerating in an EV is akin to a rollercoaster ride, for all the wrong reasons. On the other hand, accelerating on a well-built, high-strung sportscar with a combustion engine is an assault on all senses; the sounds, the vibrations, it all adds to the overall engagement and enjoyment of the car, which is something EVs just can't replicate.
I am well aware that "performance cars" are just a subset of cars, which are built with the purpose of moving people from A to B in a comfortable, reasonable manner. So by definition, we are second class citizens, we just happen to enjoy driving fast, and geek out over cars that can do more than take you from A to B in a "more than reasonable" fashion.
There will be a change of paradigm, where EVs and combustion cars will exist, but we have to come to terms that we, "car guys", will always play second fiddle to car manufacturers. There were times where car manufacturers favored us more than others, but over the last couple years, EU regulations have basically backed them into a corner, so they just make do with what they can - and I say this with a heavy heart, being a Merc fanboy who has seen how AMG is now trying to sell a hybrid 4-pot and trying to make it pass as a "63", when my car is an old W212 E63, a car that truly embodies the "German muscle car" ethos. It actually hurts to see.
All in all, I think things will eventually come around, as it always have. I can imagine how bleak things must have looked, back in the early '70s when large V8s were basically being strangled into oblivion. This too shall pass.

My love for drifting and FD grew because of IG. One of the biggest reasons why I did Mechanical Engineering in college was because of that Speedhunters Article of the Hoonicorn build. Getting to know the scene from then to now really shaped my tastes and love for cars, so much so that now as a young adult, i’m planning my first build. Now it's a bunch of folks get on TikTok and IG calking about running 1000hp. People are more concerned about these instead of just the enthusiast part of the car culture.

Car culture is dying because cars are too expensive. You used to be able to get a fun used car by working over the summer and that was possible even back in the early 10’s, you can’t do that now, you’re looking at $13k-$18k for a basic fun used car, that is what a new car used to cost 4 years ago.
I think people would love car culture if they could participate. But now they are doing things that they can afford like video games, since they are one of the last affordable hobbies.

Honestly car culture peaked around 2010 when all 3 Detroit companies had the retro look . Since then it's been downhill.

An entirely fair take... 👍Over the years I have been involved in almost every aspect of car culture discussed in this video - night time meets, car-shows, track days, off-road/overland, motorsports - and invariably social media has had a negative effect on them all in one way or another.

RIP Irwindale Speedway. Southern California won’t ever be the same after recently losing multiple major tracks in our metropolitan area. The general public is left with only tracks 4-6 hours away all the way out in the desert. What a shame
