Convergent thinking at it's finest! I had this video lined up a couple weeks ago, but I couldn't type quite well cuz my shoulder was still recovering Then I saw your tweet about this topic, I was like, "Well I already got this far into editing"
Joke: Me thinks thou doth protest too much. You two clearly shared notes in a cross promotional scheme to boost your views... :P Guys, it's all good, I've seen this in Australia, the scene will just go super underground again.
I'm still into cars but I also agree with Jeremy Clarkson when he told his reasons for not continuing with reviewing cars this year. I don't like where the future is headed. New cars are being kept expensive and you still don't own them because they are software platforms. It just sounds so depressive and controlling to even think about it, not at all what got me into this hobby in the first place. I wish there is still a place in the future where car enthusiasts can enjoy their cars for a reasonable price.
@@100xasdI agree with the new cars, especially when you see the overpricing dealerships do. But we also have to keep ourselves in check on the used market. I see a lot of people over price their shit over and over again and we need to as a community stop that
I was lucky when buying my winter car, A Suzuki Swift sport for around 1k dollars. And that is with the high prices in Denmark. But its a bit of a clunker, but it will hopefully make it through the winter
It's because more and more people are realizing that older cars are more reliable than new ones, and can outlast them indefinitely as long as you take good care of them and don't abuse them, which ends up being cheaper long-term than continually buying new cars and dealing with their problems. There are old cars with over a million miles on them, just with regular maintenance... Why wouldn't they be going up in value when new cars are having catastrophic failures at 60k? This might be a hot take, but I'm kinda glad cheap beater cars aren't really a thing anymore, because it means people are seeing cars as something worth taking care of so they last. They're not cheap appliances to be thrown away, they are investments in your own freedom of movement, and are worth taking care of. Better to keep fixing a $6k car than keep abusing $3k cars and junking them when the wheels fall off... Cars are not worth abusing.
I think now that cars will not bring positive attention to yourself, clout chasers are going to move on to something else, leaving the true enthusiasts for themselves again
I cant see the car community dying as cars are basically a part of everyday life. The big issue atm in my opinion is The price of cars and the new cars being released. Every new car is a boring souless SUV, and when a fun car actually gets released its £50k-£80k.
The car community feels like it is dying because there aren't MORE people becoming enthusiasts, but it's not regular people who are at fault. As time goes on, things that involves cars are becoming harsher in terms of laws such as emission laws, the nonsensical markups that dealership are pulling out of their a$sɛs, the choices of most non-enthusiasts in terms of vehicles, which results in more SUVs and light trucks that aren't being used for what they are and also because "iD rAtH3r hAvƐ tHe 0tHeR gUy dIɛ iNsTe4d 0f Me" is considered a safety measure for some reason. I just believe the car enthusiast community is just going back to be a very niche hobby.
As a Brazilian car girl, having to pay 70k+ for a simple modern daily driver when your salary is less than R$1500 is one of the worst feelings in the whole world (without counting the yearly taxes)
Been there, was able to buy a shitbox E36 just before covid hit tho. But I spent 70k+ on it, vanos was gone one day, my mechanic was with his agenda full and then I left it with one guy that worked with him before, worst deal of my life. I was scammed by 7k+ and after one week my engine blew, sold it at a fraction of what I've spent... Now I'm in a better situation but cool cars are so expensive that I don't have the energy for now to buy one again. I'm planning to buy a bike and take a peek in the motorcycle scene, see whats up there
It’s easy to get ahold of a great car in the U.S.A just go to the middle states and you’ll find vehicle paradise. However @garurudoo4217 Ik it’s normal female inclination to have the Newest item but wouldn’t it be better to buy let a year go by than purchase the vehicle from last year and with One previous owner so the price drops drastically as it no longer has dealer markup price , & new car markup price. I’m gonna do that with the Cadillac CT5
There is no such thing as car "culture". You guys are just fanboys of (dangerous and toxic) products marketed to you by some faceless global enterprise. But a car doesn't make you cool the same way smoking cigaretts doesnt make you cool. It just costs insane ammounts of money, you smell bad and die decades earlier.
It's not really an opportunity, this is a lesson and discussion about it but that doesn't mean it's a full opportunity. In order for it to make a full comeback. It's gotta go back to the roots as bladed stated. Back then it was no takeovers, no pavement queens no personal trash talkers and no tampers, it was respectful people with cars they put their hard work in. The new generation now is completely clueless about cars. they wouldn't even know what a 4BL carb is. Minds aren't open enough at all... till we weed out the bullshit then it's gonna get worse
@UhKimboze there is a white s14 in my complex...it's sat in the same place for like 3 months and before that there was some other kind of old nissan that same dude just buys project cars and uses them as storage
I wouldn't be surprised if the 1960s was another peak in the popularity of cars. I'd have to do some research on it, but trends always come back around in cycles.
OH YEAH FOR SURE. good point. Cause the 80s with the awful Oil Crisis and Strict EPA Regulations tanked Car Enthusiasm for a decade or so, but then 90s FUCKING SOARED back into the zeitgeist (Look at all the 90s Legends, All of JDM, Ferrari F40, Corvette C5 and the fugging LS BABY, E36 BMW) so yeah 60'-70's were peak, but rolled into a valley in the 80's. So I guess 2020 is our 2nd valley, not first!
Its always stupid government regulations. They are the reason many of the gas powered vehicles are dying. There are companies like Toyota that still refuse to give it up. They are coming out with revival sports cars and a flagship super car for Lexus. Mazda is following suit. If the EPA can shut their bull crap remarks on so called saving the planet then they need to learn on how to make reliable cars that don’t freaking brake and will cost an arm and a leg. Customers also need to stop adding so much tech that will bump up prices and make the car lose its value.

In my country you can buy a new car "track prepped". Well, you gotta know a guy. And what you get is the engine, no interior at all, and just the chassis and body. Pretty cheap compared to a whole new car, but again, you gotta know a guy
right to repair is OVER which means right to OWNERSHIP is also gone. you are licensing the computer onboard the car and the manufacturer has full control!
Well most car enthusiasts don't buy new cars to begin with and for good reason. More expensive, more difficult to maintain and a warranty to void, And most of them prefer a more raw/visceral driving experience than a numb, boring appliance experience. Plenty of cheaper old cars still available. Just gotta think outside of the box and maybe not go for the ones ruined by clout chases like S-chassis and supras. Try something like a Volvo c30. Fwd 5-cylinder hot hatch. You can pick them up dirt cheap and they are effectively a ford Rs mk2 and they have good engines and sound like a baby viper. Or a early 90's lexus GS300 they come with a 2jz-ge in them with lexus badging on them. Swap in a manual and you could have a drift platform. They sell for like $2,000
I gave up on the car community and got into motorcycles. Best decision ever, I’ve met more people and discovered so many new places just riding around town.

It's very fun being someone who's into cars but also hates car dependency. Sounds hypocritical at first but in reality it's about removing cars from city areas and forcing all of the terrible drivers off the roads. It's actually such a fucking delight to drive in the Netherlands because there's less people on the roads to cause traffic and the majority of people who are on the road actually have enough knowledge to understand that they are actually supposed to use a turn signal. Plus the less demand for cars the cheaper they get. Being pro public transit actually helps out with being a car guy. Won't have to worry about needing a daily when you can take public transit to work.
Agree 100%. Cars are great, but at least 50% of car owners shouldn't be allowed to drive. It would also be healthier for them if they walked or rode bikes.
@mikaelthauland9223 I've dealt with some dumbasses before so I throw it in there to hopefully make them actually think for a second. I once had a dude in his 40s with a whole ass family find my Instagram, spam comments on all my posts, DM me to kill myself, and fucking post something on their story about me all for saying that Jacksonville FL barely has any bike infrastructure. There are some wild ass people online when you start questioning the authority of the American car industry.
You don't have to quit liking cars but can see the problem with car centric infrastructure in general. Dubai, Jeddah, and just about any other Middle Eastern city with too much dependency on skyscrapers as well as lack of proper infrastructure for the public every year is literally flooding from just a few drops of rain water because the leaders of the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and to extent Egypt are too busy wasting billions of dollars on flashy megaprojects that will just end up going overbudget, increase debts, and contribute more to the already bad pollution and hot conditions there.
We bought two new cars last year, a Camaro and a Subaru BRZ (both manual). A couple of my wife's friends as well as my sister bagged on us for not buying EVs when we had the perfect opportunity. They can't understand why we would commit to combustion for another 5 or 6 years... I think this kind of sentiment will intensify over the next 5 to 10 years.
personally, i cant wait till people throw away their fake passion for cars. Like you highlighted, there really has been no bigger contributor to the notoriety of car hobbyists than clout culture. Whether it be takeovers, highway swimming, or the absolutely bonkers rise in car prices. Theres no reason a standard 90s Japanese shitbox should cost any more than $5k. I want my brother to be able to buy a clean S197 for or EK for $5K or less when his time comes so he can enjoy the hobby with me. With the popularity of car enthusiasm declining, hopefully it'll leave a lot more resources for actual car guys
@ “classic” by traffic code and DMV standards, not every car older than 25 is something that should be drooled over and wrapped in environment proof shielding.
I feel the same way, however you can still find hidden gems, especially in the european market, I got my MK2 Golf for 500€ in spring 2024, I restored it for under 2k€ and now I have a fun and oldschool daily driver
They'll run out suckers eventually, have you seen our birth rates? This year finally saw a month after month drop. If dealers don't adjust, they'll be left holding onto outdated inventory
I saw you stop for that emergency vehicle, bravo sir. Also car, and "nerd" culture i.e gaming, anime, manga, comics, trading cards etc. all are getting ruined because they became mainstream. Which sucks because I'm not a gate keeper by any means and actually wanted that stuff to be more accessible, but unfortunately clout culture happened
Bringing things to the mainstream means more people will know about it, which is wonderful, but also brings in bad actors who just want to come in for clout or just plain FOMO.
You ignore how capitalism play into it because investors and executives want a safe product to sell instead of anything risky Also I think anime and gaming are better than ever unless your on xbox or ps5
Becoming mainstream is not even close to being a factor of the decline of the state of car culture. On another note, I think trading cars died off because of the rise of technology. I have no idea on the other stuff.
I'm gonna throw my hat into the ring here. I dipped out of the car scene for a few different reasons. The biggest one being the sheer amount of trash-talkers. Another is that the community just isn't as accepting as people make it out to be. I used to be eager to go to meets, but with each passing year, the people got ruder and more interested in the hot new thing. With how often I got told my car is bad, I just gave up. If the car community collapses, I won't shed a tear.
try classic cars, still a very respectful and pleasant community. also try attending higher end events, you get a more educated and respectable crowd and none of that night meet drama.
@@iiiii5256 They just have a different kind of drama, but it's still there. Classics and brand clubs are incredibly elitist, by and large. Most have their own internal drama and politics. Especially at the higher-end events. At least where I live. There's a ton of pressure to conform to what "should," be done to a car, or even whether it should be driven regularly or not.
@@lancefletcher2963 the two are not remotely comparable. while you will find internal politics you may not agree with, there are no direct, overt threats to your security or dignity. You and your car will be physically safe. The same can't be said with modern night meets with the schoolyard bullying, crashes and fist fights. i can stomach the "internal drama" if it's delivered to me respectfully and cordially.
@@lancefletcher2963 Yep, I own two classic cars. The Mopar club I looked into was quite elitist and just seemed so full of themselves. I was mid 20's with a 1970 Dodge Charger R/T 440 sixpack 4spd project car and some of the guys in the club seemed pissed that a "young kid" owned a car like that. I was part of a great Mustang club that was mostly into the newer stuff from fox bodies on around 20 years ago. I just do my own thing now and I'm quite happy.
This is why I like autocross. I went to an event years ago and surprised how chill everyone was compared to car meets. Nobody cared what you drove and everyone swapped notes on how to tackle parts of the track. Everyone had this common respect that it was us vs the cones.
Dealer markup is crazy. I was browsing some used car dealers a couple weeks ago and they were selling a 2023 Ford raptor for $140,000. For those wondering, that was around a %175 markup.
L dealers I hope those cars rot for another year. 2024 is going to end and they're still holding onto 2023s? Back when I bought my new 17 Vette in 2019, that dealer couldn't wait to give me deal after deal. They were sick of looking at it!! I miss the consumer era of cars...now it's dealer bias
Common dealership L I hope their greed comes back to bite it in the a$s and that they have that Raptor until the next generation starts being released or longer 🤣
Social media killed car culture. The import scene in the early 2000s was all about not getting caught and meeting up in secret. Now people live stream it for clout. I feel bad for anyone who didn't get to experience cars before FB, RUclips, IG, etc.
I'm just glad my attainable dream car is an Accord V6 Coupe, and I was able to buy it recently. I won't be in the car market until I want a porsche, and I'm very thankful.
I have considered quit being a car enthusiast often for the past year due to how insane the car prices have become but in the end I decided not to because cars makes up a huge part of who I am as a person and giving that up just doesn't feel right. But the car market these days is so disheartening, also social media has given the car culture a bad name with garbage trends like takeovers and people trying to use cars as a way to garner clout than actually liking cars. I die a little inside whenever I see social media posts where a NA Miata is being treated like it's an infant.
That's the first thing I look for in a car. How it feels, the vibe, picturing myself driving it. Only when I can picture myself happily driving it do I look at specs and see if it would work with my budget and stuff
I kind of like this topic because, while the car culture, or trend I guess, is on its way out, those who still love cars as enthusiasts will always be here. Regardless of what level of an enthusiast you are, you will still have a place in the car culture. Plus, like many have already said, we can do without the clout chasers and posers and all those wannabes. While I’m not really into modding cars (wanted to do it back then but never had anyone around to show me), I still like seeing some of the stuff that people do to their rides. I think this community will be around for quite a while. I’m looking forward to seeing what’s on the horizon. Great work on the video. Keep it up. :)
Honestly the biggest issue I see is that the golden era of sports cars has pretty much long passed, and now most of the cheap new cars from that era have become expensive today. Today, most "cheap" new sports cars are still quite expensive in comparison. If we keep going at this rate, even the used market will dry up with cool cars you can get for cheap, and the options will become slim.
Here in Europe, you can still buy a tuner for a laughable price (I mean, you can buy an old sporty coupe for like 2k dollars), it's more an american problem
As a 17 year old who is finally able to drive and become a driving enthusiast….these car prices are just outrageous. The only reason my friends and I can even afford to have decent cars are because of our parents. My grandpa gifted me my b5s4 after spending thousands to get it fixed after leaving it sitting for 5 years. Not to mention the insurance is over 400 a month which I can’t afford to pay. My friends cars (golfs, v6 maros, or there dads m850i) were all gifted or largely paid. Also my parents are concerned about me becoming “one of those reckless ones” instead of having fun and chilling. Won’t stop us but I should note this.
Your first issue is thinking you need a specific car to get into the scene. That’s what society has convinced you. You can drive a Buick Regal and still be a car enthusiast.
I've always been into cars since I was a kid, but it's only recently that I've really dove deep into the car scene. And you've been one of the youtubers I've been watching the most and you've honestly helped me learn quite a bit. So while the modern car community has sucked sometimes, thank you for being a positive influence and guide in the community!
I love Mopars, been a fan since my first Charger back in 2006. But I absolutely hate the people who primarily own them. I don’t like people who shut down main streets to do stupid sh*t and potentially kill bystanders. When I see a modified Mopar the first thing that comes to mind is that crap. Use to be “Damn nice ride” to “that dude is probably a dumb a**”.
@@BladedAngelwhat tracks are closing? I’ve been to many tracks on the East coast and other than some crappy low turnout locations none of the major race tracks have gone anywhere
Every time I pick-up a hobby it died after a month…. I have storm chasing and weather as a hobby and for about 6 days a year after a hurricane people will suddenly turn into some weather nerd and act like they know more than meteorologists, and then they drop it. It gets boring, but I have weather as a hobby all year, and car culture is definitely involved with storm chasing
I might be on the opposite end, where whenever I get remotely interested in a certain hobby, it's at or post-peak boom. There are a few exceptions though, like PvZ.
I'm predicting that since people wont buy these cars anymore at horrendous prices, the sellers are gonna freak out and lower prices again. But as always, we'll have to wait and see
Another factor is insurance prices skyrocketing for young people. I'm 22, got a v6 Mustang at 19 and I have a perfect driving record but it still would cost me several hundred dollars extra a month to upgrade to a decade+ old GT.
hey man, i'm netgear from a channel called collector car feed. great video, and i agree with your viewpoint 100%. the clout chasers were never "real", and in the end the hobby will go back to the true weirdos: the people who just like cars.
I hate how young I am while being into cars, Because all cars are now getting worst each gen they make. And yeah we hope cars will grow better when its not a trend but what makes you sure that cars themselves will still be good? To be honest the best era for cars is late 80's until mid 10's I wish I was born at that time and could enjoy all these masterpieces🥲
Why not just buy a old car then? I found and bought a 93 Thunderbird and a 97 Town Car for $3900(+$1200 for shipping since it was in a different state and I couldn't go get it myself) and $2000 respectively just a couple months ago, so they are around.
Yeah prices are up if you want a 90s JDM car sorry they cost as much as a house down payment don't hype them up for 20 years then, same thing applies to the the new cars but 98% of enthusiast don't buy new cars anyway. You can get a good starter enthusiast car on marketplace for $3,500 - $9,000 but it won't be a new car, JDM Hype Mobile or New off the top of my head 986 Porsche Boxster, Porsche 944, G35, 08 - 15 Civic SI, SN95 and S197 Mustang GT, and E46 and E9X BMW's. Yeah with these they won't have 40,000 miles and you will need to do some mechanical maintenance or a major design flaw you may have to take care of or was already done being 20 years old. These cars may not be the brand or the era of the fancy HP number you want but chasing HP brand and clout is a waste get into watches and if $9,000 is to much for you get into bikes.
@@Stealth_Gamer92 yeah, theres such cars but its almost 30 years old! Which means unless the first owner toke really good care of it, you will have to keep repairing the car with a 30 years parts, so do you know how expensive and rare to find these parts? And lets not forget the constant care you should put on the car. As much fun as doing such effort for such an amazing car, its not worth saving up all the necessaries to maintainance for it. Its cheaper to buy a mid-late 10's car since you can be more confident in driving and maintaining
@@dsr6003 Not gonna speak for every model, but the two I bought are easy to buy parts for since one is a Panther Platform and the other uses parts used in Mustangs, Crown Vics etc. I do agree if you are against working on it yourself the costs will add up, but they are still very easy to fix at home with a $80 tool set from Amazon and a quick YT or Google search. Just do some research beforehand so you know about parts availability, again if you aren't averse to maintaining it yourself.
A fantastic insight. I also really appreciate you taking an understanding look at the anti-car sentiment. That can be really hard to do when faced with a group of people that actively hate a hobby you love. As you said, I think a lot of car hate comes less from actually hating cars themselves, but the circumstances surrounding them. That includes them being barely affordable, yet required in everyday life, making them a financial burden forced upon people who are already financially a lot worse off than generations before them. Infrastructure in the US being so car focused that it tends to be hostile to pedestrians and cyclists. The lack of common alternative energy sources that are both environmentally and financially sustainable (electric cars are coming in more, but they tend to be so expensive. And mining lithium for the batteries brings a whole different pile of issues, so they aren't at a point where they offer a solution for this issue yet, I think). If the circumstances around cars will be improved, then I think car culture is more likely to find renewed popularity. On a different but similar point, I recently talked to a bunch of motorcycle salesmen and they spoke of a similar decline in interest with younger generations. I think a part of that is financial, but also a cultural thing, at least here in Germany. Motorcycles used to be a convenient, cheaper way (compared to cars) to get from point A to B. Today that role is taken more by public transportation and motorcycles seem to become more of a niche hobby rather than an actually practical vehicle, and an expensive and considerably more risky one nontheless. If you'd like then I'd love to hear a more US-american perspective on this topic from you, I think it's quite interesting!
I understand and agree with majority of the points the anti-car crowd makes, my issue with them is that a lot of them are so extremely over the top and they express their opinions in such an asshole way that I lowkey don't want to agree or associate with them. Motorcycles having a declined interest can also be attributed to the infrastructure and how it forces aggressive and reckless people on the road which makes it even more hostile for motorcyclists because they have way less protection on a motorcycle compared to a vehicle in case of a collision. Just look at Bladed being heavily injured in an accident. It really sucks.
@@fullyuki That's totally understandable. I've been spooked away from conversations with people who I generally agreed with, but who were so aggressive about it that it was too draining talking to them. Cars can be an emotional and impactful topic, so I don't blame people for being intense about it lol. But it can make discussions difficult, especially on the internet where everything seems more extreme. Oh yeah, aggressive and simply bad drivers are a huge risk factor for bikers. That's the main reason people tell me for not riding (anymore) and why my family doesn't want me to ride. I do wonder if that is something that has gotten actually worse though, or if that always has been pretty bad. I read somewhere that younger generations are comparatively more risk-averse (probably a part of being less financially secure), which would also impact interest in a risky hobby. But I don't have statistics at hand so take that with a grain of salt.
exactly, it's more around infrastructure and the lack of transportation options than the hate of cars itself. even on r/fuckcars you still see enthusiast posts and appreciation for individual cars.
jason camissas video on the new 400z vs supra sums it up the best. we just don't have money for toys anymore.. cars get more expensive and jobs are paying less
Car culture is dying cause people are dumb enough to overpay, ruining a whole market in the process. Additionally, the car community has became so toxic that instead of looking at real world numbers in performance and having a huge diversity, they rather follow a broken trend of "The friend of my friend said" or influencers who will only bait them for views. Back in the 70s,80s and 90s people would by cars based on what THEY LIKED and what they saw on magazines such as Super street or Import tuner. The US car community actually ruined the market for the rest of the world with the JDM import crap, messing up the Skyline market in Australia, New Zealand and Japan promoting parts hording, price inflation and even scams with rust bucket cars being pull out of auction houses reselled at higher rates.
I dont think Car Culture will ever go away it's too iconic (and necessary to travel in the United States) to really burn out from existence. Its going through a huge shift for sure but there's alot more to car culture that holds it up as much as there is thats destroying it. Hopefully we cycle back to more affordable prices one day if by any miracle it ever happens.
Just because something is no longer mainstream doesn't mean it's dead. We built and raced Datsun 510s and 5.0 Capris in the 80s because that is all we can afford. In the 90s we graduated to Civics and Acuras. F&F was telling our story. Car culture will reinvent itself like we did from our muscle car loving parents...
A combination of factors. Idolization of specific cars, newer cars being more expensive, newer cars being harder to work on, and regulations making it harder to modify cars. There are a lot of cool cars that people don't even think about that would be really cool to modify but nobody does it because lack of aftermarket. Have you ever heard of someone building a Nissan Juke?
all the chill spots in houston getting ruined rn the mayor posted recently they had to shut down a road cause what started as a chill spot for photos and cops would ignore racing in that area for a bit. now its trashed from one night of takeover
Respectfully: after watching your other video about your battle with cancer, I freaked out when I saw “dying” in the banner at first glance. Thanks for sharing and happy holidays
I wish I was able to drive back in 2015-2019 because the idea of buying a Crown Victoria for $500 or a Mercedes 300d for less than $5000 must must have been so nice.
It honestly makes me happy. I noticed that lately car content dropped off in popularity. Thank God, I was so sick of the trendy car people who were ruining their cars to gain attention or just trashing them.. Basically people who see cars as toys for their own sake and not as emotionally engaging machines with living souls inside of them. I hate seeing so many BMWs here in Europe being trashed by young adults... Rust buckets with welded diffs, no maintenance and the driver is brain rotted tik tok guy with a vape. When I was in early class high school, they were ruining E36s, when I got to buying my own car the E46 were at peak popularity - year before college (to save some money) and now I'm at 2nd year and E90s are becoming the shitboxes. Maybe I'll get an ER34 and build it before I die, at least I hope so.
I see old Beamers being turned into drift missiles and just think about my dad never being able to afford one ever again. Drifting is overrated and it destroys cars.
The prices, the law and the complicated car designs are in my opinion mayor points why it is now harder to be a a car guy. Earlier you could buy a old car and fit a new exhaust system or doing what you wanted and if it is broken you could fix it yourself but nowadays you need special tools and software to do something which is enough of a burden for many people
Before watching the video, I'll tell you why: 1. The newer models are bland, boring, and dull. Basically even if 10 years passed, no one will remember them anyway. 2. The prices for the car, insurance, and gas are beyond ridiculous nowadays. 3. Unemployment Pandemic, billions of people are jobless now, barely can afford buying food, much less a car, a house, or a family to take care of. 4. Unfortunately, the only good cars nowadays are the expensive models, Lamborghini, Ferrari, etc... 5. Car culture was cool when technology wasn't around, however, nowadays because of the MILLIONS of way to entertain yourself, car culture became rare. Overall, sad
@@great-one0389Yes. On top of the currency conversion, we also have higher taxes on practically everything including and especially with cars, which really makes prices unbearable. Using the new Nissan Z Sport as an example, the US price is about $42k wheras the Canadian one is almost $10k more. It truly sucks. And the trucks are even worsely priced as mentioned! It makes me wonder how the roads up here are filled with boring greyscale trucks & SUVs.
I am passionate about cars. I used to own a car, but I sold it this year as it was too expensive to maintain in my country. New taxes, new laws and higher insurance premiums made it impossible for me to own my car. I'm also a member of r/fcars groups, as my city is so flooded with cars, that at rush hour it's 3 times faster to walk than to drive. People don't drive in my city anymore, they just sit in traffic, while we have plentiful empty busses, trams, subways and bike lanes. In my country having a car, any car, is a must, and you must drive it anywhere, even though it's costing you time, money and mental health. Bucharest, Romania if you're asking.
another problem is the rising costs of car parts. Most companies these days don't mass produce parts and operate off of the made-at-order model or the core system. Meaning new parts are either not produced at all, or your going to be stuck waiting for six months for something the manufacturer might just turn around and cancel on you. Manufacturers these days due to the volatility in the market have put a heavy emphasis on machines that can work with a wider variety functions over raw production numbers. Its not fair to blame manufacturers for an overregulated market causing this mess though.
I came to answer the question. It's because even a Miata is 10k for a shitty one. End of story. Cars are for rich people now. We are stuck with used piles that are maintenance nightmares and rusted to hell. I've been an avid car enthusiast for my whole life, I'm 27 and I can't afford any half way decent sports car. We can't afford cars. And new cars are for the 1%. They are lazy boys on wheels that massage your balls and drive for you. I want an old car but those have all been scooped up and they are selling for more than new cars. Even the GR86, the supposed cheap sports car on the market costs 700 a month for payments or I have to save for 3 years and hope no emergencies happen to be able to afford it. By then gas cars will be like illegal or some shit. It's a 1% game now we've been priced out.
If I could I'd make a car brand devoted to building cheap, reliable sports cars. Alas, this is an impossible dream because of the economy. (And because I'm British 🤢)
Great video and exact analysis. I think, the first two points are the most contributing ones. Btw, it's not only about cars pricing, but servicing and upgrading - all became way more expensive. For decades I am "hobby tourist" for everything that I touch, I want look like the hobbyist without investing much of my own (not money wise). Nowadays I still care what I drive, but without "Hey all, look at me driving my car".
Funny thing, sometimes I even get hate from other people who are into cars, purely for the area I like, that being buses. The main argument I hear is "Well who else would actually like a brick on wheels?" And they aren't too wrong, I still haven't met another bus enthusiast irl yet, partially because majority are 4-6 decades older than me, and in general they are a very rare breed of car enthusiast. That is mostly because of all the liscences you need, the price of buying one (let alone maintenence), and actually finding one in good shape. It's certainly enjoyable though, I'm still happy that [as far as I'm aware] I'm the only person to get a photo of a Nissan TCR240 Intrepid this year, and found the only photos to exist of the one and only Nissan CCS200 Collegiate, so it's not like you can't have fun with them. Either way, I should stop yapping this just turned into a mini yap sesh lol, my point stands though, and you are right, it's getting way harder to get into cars as a whole these days.
I think this probably contributed to my burnout of cars. A lot of the factors listed in this video. The only thing I'm not burnt out on is playing racing games and going to track events. Haven't been to the track in a bit because I've been saving money to be more financially stable before I go back. And a bunch of my track friends miss me at the events, even when I tell them why I haven't been back
Been watching your videos for a long time and I have to say that you bring something to the car community that most others don't. Content that is aimed to teach about the culture and community rather than just cool cars and the such. Your noob guides were honestly a huge reason I ever got into the culture to begin with. This is to say that you do a fantastic job at what you do. Although, a varied vocabulary is just as important to the ears as having a strong vocabulary is.
i lost interested in the car community because going to auto shows are too expensive for my side and my interest starts to change but i still keep my usual username since the tuner era because it is part of my childhood
The fact that these cars that were worth less than now a being wasted instead of being used for a purpose, for the rest of their lives, there is tons of abandoned cars that are rotting away by mother nature and the environment, buying a car in this year is pretty expensive because of the people buying it and not using it properly to keep it for years to come, I remember the car community not being the best with buying cars, cars come and go but so does anything, I feel those people who doesn’t want to purchase a car in modern times because it is so expensive that they can’t even buy these cars in 2024, mark my word, 2025 is going to get worse…
I'm not into cars for the same reason I'm not into yachts, or spaceships, or natural gas powerplants. They're all way too expensive for a person to purchase. I suggest getting into motorcycles, as far as I know it isn't as ruined yet.
Car culture has been ruined since like 2009, and the ridiculous COVID 19 inflation was the final nail in the coffin! After 2009, the builds got more boring, stance became a thing, car mags became 3 times shorter, and then dissapeared completely! After that, everyone just started doing that for clout and almost all cars looked identical - same shitty RB kits, same TE37 rims, same camber, same boring colors - nothing like it was at it's peak in the 2000s!
@@sanderhackerhd8369honestly i think many racing games lack body kits representation, usually it's all just rocket bnuuy or liberty walk resulting in new guys only recognizing the mainstream brands take a look at the NFS Unbound, R34 barely has any kits. Not even C-West 190E don't even got Lorinser, Wald, or AMG despite being a thumbnail car (we get PANDEM and A$AP Rocky custom instead)
Really, who cares? I’ve been into cars since before I could drive. I have built the literally from the ground up replacing 85% of the body panels. I couldn’t care less if I tried rather or not someone thinks my hobby is cool. I don’t do it for them or their opinions. I do it for me and my happiness! It’s the way I choose to spend my valuable time and hard earned money. The car culture could collapse in on itself and burn. It won’t change my thoughts on my hobby. Hell it might make the “project cars” cheaper!
Ok I’m 28 and I’ve literally been apart of car culture my entire life and this is what I know. Car culture isn’t dead but it’s constantly changing just like life. I will say it’s absolutely more expensive than ever and it’s harder for younger people to get involved. I think now younger kids want to be more internet influencer's then enjoy the hobby. I think a lot of people look at certain cars (exotic cars) higher because it’s a status symbol instead of making what they have special so I would say lack of creativity is a big thing today. I think the biggest thing for people that are 16-35 in the car culture need to do is just enjoying the hobby and being respectful. I say respectful in the sense of no takeovers, you can still criticize other people’s cars.
before i realized i kinda liked cars i never even wanted to get anywhere close to the people that talked about cars cause they instantly made you feel like they were assholes :) this is how you're perceived fellas
Manufacturers making or rehashing cars to be a crossover suv, prices are terrible, and takeovers has done more harm than good and their not even apart of the community
This honestly explains why motorcycle culture is rising among gen z as more people find bikes cheap and more efficient. However clout culture is also giving bikers a bad rap too
I was in an accident last month and looking through car prices brought me to tears. Couldn't find anything for less than $12,000, even if the car was beat to hell and old enough to get harassed by Army recruiters.
Dam, how many times have the Military recruiters bother you? Yeah it's kind of hard to buy a used car. Hell the one we got, we can't get the plates for as the original owner didn't sign in a few papers.
I think for example fnf arent doing aswell because they shifted away from being somewhat realistic street racing movies... Them going away from it hurt the scene for sure
Tinfoil hat time! I think Top Gear(Trio Era)/The Grand Tour have a connection to why Car culture as a whole is dying. During the Early seasons of Top Gear they could barely fill the Dunsfold Hanger where they filmed the episodes. The Studio was mainly filled with Car Heads back in the day. It wasn't Until the Explosion of Top Gear did they fill the Studio with people. With Top Gear Exploding I feel like Car Culture came along with it. Top Gear, especially towards younger car enthusiasts, are the first taste of Cars and Car Culture. It showed the new shiniy thing yes, but also got excited about even the smallest little thing cars Heck even the hosts were geniune car enthusiast who enjoyed every car they reviewed or driven And thanks to Parasocial relationships people also got exited about cars and the trio. But after Clarkson got fired and May and Hammond moved with Jeremy to Amazon it started falling from there Don't get me wrong The Grand Tour was a great show, but like what you said with Media it shifted away from cars being the main subject, to just being a supporting role Same thing with The Grand Tour. The Grand Tour became a broad apealing shows filled with actions and explotions It got new audience but failed to retain the core audience of Top Gear/The Grand tour After the hype of those explotions died down they switched to doing specials only Even with the specials you can clearly tell The Trio and the Audience aswell were getting Tired of it Now that the Trio has bid farewell I feel like Car Culture came along with it. There's no more three friends geeking about cars.
One big point I think you didn't cover was that almost any car make today makes hybrid and electric powertrains and it get's extremely hard to attract "hobby tourists" into the car culture when a tesla can outrun some million dollar cars and most ICE performance vehicles. Hopefully the world would not double down and ease the restrictions that may cause a new renaissance era for the cars again like the 90s peak after the 60s crash.
8:12 I have no problem saying it. New game bad. Old game good.” These new NFS games always call back to the 03-05 NFSs for nostalgia bait and cash grabs, but EA refused to actually make the games like that anymore, despite the obvious demand for something more along those lines without all the modern game BS.
As a millennial, I agree with these points. But not only are cars prohibitively expensive, the economy sucks in general, which I think compounds the problem. I'll add: One thing I know that's changed in Miami is that driving just sucks more. Traffic is much, much, worse; the road conditions are worse; and sprawl has populated the once abandoned roads we used to race on, as teens. Most of the places we used to hang out in are just straight up gone. But I gotta say. With age, I now also just feel like cars are bad way to get around. I like them---especially in the auto sport context---but they're a poor, inefficient, and harmful way for most people to get around. Hell, most people are bad drivers and have no business on the road anyway. And it sucks we designed cities around them. I look forward to a future with more mass transit, urbanized cities, and less people driving.
yeah I dont care if car culture is dying, not that I want it to die, but now that everyone hates us and no one wants to be us, we can let actual enthusiast shine and do some great projects. think kit cars, indie racing games and very nerdy video essayists. we're gonna end up like the vinyl community and I love it. d**th to mainstream, long live autism.
Let the indies roll! (Btw, I'm kind of glad I have a Hot Wheels collection of cars I do like, because I know I will never afford/have a chance at 1/20 of them.
From a millennial, it's been great seeing Gen Z get back to car culture's roots - hot rodding shitboxes. Car culture has always been the weird and go-fast shit, whether it's been Big Daddy Roth or 24 Hours of Lemons. Personally, I'm happy nobody really gives a shit about supercars anymore except the clout chasers. But car culture has always been divided along those lines - built and bought. It's absolutely been the weirdos, nerds, speed geeks, burnout artists, and engine-building autists at the heart of the culture. The rest lives on the trailer.
As of now I'm 16 and this is certainly something I've come to terms with. I've always been into cars my entire life but as I grew older, I started to notice many of these down trends going on within the car community. Particularly the youth of the community, with many of the trends that my own generation brought to it being very harmful to the community with stuff like takeover culture and cringe worthy online trends that have ruined the fabrics of what the community was in previous decades. It's for that reason I've just completely stopped paying attention to what the mainstream think at this point. All of my friends want the newest Mustangs, M4s, and Supras while I'm here losing it over a 96' Impala or a 1st gen LX 450. Which theres nothing wrong with that I personally thing they are cool to a certain degree but I've always gravitated towards cars of the 80s to early 00s. But now that's all starting to become a dying breed and it's truly sad to see this all come to slow closure at what almost feels like the pinnacle of technology within the car industry. I'm sure the community will bounce back eventually but for right now it's just going to have to do for what it's worth.
This is what happens when a society throws meritocracy out the window and fully embraces oligarchy. Life doesn't get better just because some jackass tweets about how things should be.
One thing I did experience was car meets becoming a smaller event to attend and if you are part of a crew you are most likely will hangout with the friends at gettys than attend car meets or your crew host meets as often. My crew used to host every Friday night but people use to come by the meet, stay in their car or with their small group of friends and never venture out to socialize with other people. It sucks cuz I think social media really mess up the car scene to a point where car meets feels like a open party you go and see if your gonna stay or dip after 30 mins
@@Mman07311 Dam. Tbf I am almost the same. I don't know how to drive, let alone use a bike. While I love walking, I rather not go unless I'm hanging out with friends, but again I'm lazy to do that too.
I can definitely attest to cars being at ridiculous prices. I got rear ended in my wife’s car the week of Thanksgiving, and we had to go shopping for cars. The prices on what used to be just your basic economy car is NUTS. They’re either shitboxes for 15K or 30-50K miles but 23K+. I was able to find an okay deal on an used E210 Toyota Corolla hatch in manual, but I know that if I didn’t need a car, I wouldn’t have tried to get one in this economy… All that said, I love my Corolla and I’m glad I have it. It’s the closest thing I’ve ever owned to an “enthusiast car”, despite it not being anything to write home about in terms of the power or anything. It’s just really fun to drive, it’s economical, and there is a good amount of aftermarket support for it. It also looks great in my opinion, sporty without trying too hard (like the 10th gen Civic). Edit: with regards to car culture dying out/leaving its peak, I think it will never die out, even if it does decrease in how widespread it is. Generally, there’s always going to be people who want to do stuff with their cars beyond going to their 9 to 5 and back. Even if it becomes more niche, it’ll endure.

It's the fact that ALL car prices went up. A 2006 honda civic was
I was lucky when buying my winter car, A Suzuki Swift sport for around 1k dollars.
Not in america.
A lot of it is inflation too
MK1 Focuses are still dirt cheap, and you can get a larger Duretech with better power out of a Fusion or Escape for pretty cheap.
Time to trick clout chasers into believing NPC cars are cool and trendy so vehicles for actual car enthusiasts can become attainable again...
Agreed.
The genie can't go back to the bottle, even 4chan is full of normies now.Any attempt to trick clout chasers will fail.
This happened to the civic. Unfortunately, it did not that positive results for car guys
"Every new car is a boring souless SUV"
Or a crappy EV waiting for it to spontaneously catch on fire.
@@OriginalBongoliathor both
The car community feels like it is dying because there aren't MORE people becoming enthusiasts, but it's not regular people who are at fault.

It's not really an opportunity, this is a lesson and discussion about it but that doesn't mean it's a full opportunity. In order for it to make a full comeback. It's gotta go back to the roots as bladed stated. So I guess 2020 is our 2nd valley, not first!
@@BladedAngel I pray your right
Exactly. Car culture is not dying it just needs a transformation to then be reborn.
@rafaellastracom6411 if something needs to be reborn doesn't that mean it died lol

there'll still be old cars and the occasional new car that hits the spot.
Good points! 👍🏼
Agree 100%. Cars are great, but at least 50% of car owners shouldn't be allowed to drive. It would also be healthier for them if they walked or rode bikes.
I wouldn’t call it hypocritical To be into cars and also hate car dependency, they don’t contradict each other
@mikaelthauland9223 I've dealt with some dumbasses before so I throw it in there to hopefully make them actually think for a second.

Becoming mainstream is not even close to being a factor of the decline of the state of car culture. On another note, I think trading cars died off because of the rise of technology. I have no idea on the other stuff.

There’s a good and bad side to it… 🙂😕
I'm gonna throw my hat into the ring here.

I hope those cars rot for another year. 2024 is going to end and they're still holding onto 2023s? Back when I bought my new 17 Vette in 2019, that dealer couldn't wait to give me deal after deal. They were sick of looking at it!! I miss the consumer era of cars...now it's dealer bias
Why would you want a truck?
@Gilaric i wasn't looking for anything, just browsing. I was highlighting the markup

I hope their greed comes back to bite it in the a$s and that they have that Raptor until the next generation starts being released or longer 🤣

People just see spec sheets now and not the actual feel and vibe of the car.
Exactly, if it doesn't have a million hp, or a 0-60 of like 1 sec it's "slow", or they don't find it interesting.
That's only 10 year olds they'll mature

Mopar then meant "Motor Parts."
Now it means "Moron Party."
In my area at least, they lowered every speed limit to 30kph. Parts are expensive, cops target meets, nowhere good to drive, tracks closing etc.
Yeah the tracks closing combined with meets shutting down has definitely axed the IRL scene...😢

I was paying almost 400 a month in insurance for my 06 evo back in 2010. just as a reference point

I never understood the appeal of public transport, only old grandmas use it where I live because anyone that isn't old gets a car or a motorcycle.

Earlier you could buy a old car and fit a new exhaust system or doing what you wanted and if it is broken you could fix it yourself but nowadays you need special tools and software to do something which is enough of a burden for many people
Before watching the video, I'll tell you why:

Especially considering they're all drift missiles now. Man I hate drifting.
The silver lining of this is that due to clout and bad reputation car prices will go down eventually and can flush out the wannabes and clout chasers

I love your true care and enthusiasm about cars
New cars suck. The prices of everything is high. And legislators are constantly putting down more laws. The only thing we'll have is forza and asetto
before i realized i kinda liked cars i never even wanted to get anywhere close to the people that talked about cars cause they instantly made you feel like they were assholes :) this is how you're perceived fellas
Yeah, I'm scared of my own passion for the same reason.
Even Honda Civics and Toyota Corollas have appreciated to the point where no one wants to buy them.
With these prices, it's going to take ages to buy a car I want that I would have thought to be more "affordable"... It's really annoying
I think for example fnf arent doing aswell because they shifted away from being somewhat realistic street racing movies... Them going away from it hurt the scene for sure
Car prices suck and there is no engine diversity all so many companies share engines and platforms . Cars have 220hp but are 4.5k lbs
I don't get why people are complaining about car prices. If bicycle could cost $15k now, why would you expect a car to be cheaper than that?
It showed the new shiniy thing yes, but also got excited about even the smallest little thing cars
Heck even the hosts were geniune car enthusiast who enjoyed every car they reviewed or driven
And thanks to Parasocial relationships people also got exited about cars and the trio.
But after Clarkson got fired and May and Hammond moved with Jeremy to Amazon it started falling from there
Don't get me wrong The Grand Tour was a great show,
but like what you said with Media it shifted away from cars being the main subject, to just being a supporting role
Same thing with The Grand Tour.
The Grand Tour became a broad apealing shows filled with actions and explotions
It got new audience but failed to retain the core audience of Top Gear/The Grand tour
After the hype of those explotions died down they switched to doing specials only
Even with the specials you can clearly tell The Trio and the Audience aswell were getting Tired of it
Now that the Trio has bid farewell I feel like Car Culture came along with it.
There's no more three friends geeking about cars.
They say TV is dying out because of Social Media but it really hasn't yet.
Inflation switched me from a car guy to a bike guy
Car culture getting unpopular is actually a great tbh, no more bad actors gonna see ahh GTR R34 is cool and ruin their prices.
Look what they did to Jaguar and the Nissan R36 Concept. Not to mention EV's and overpriced vehicles. No wonder car culture is dying.
I've learnd alot from you bladed your my internet car teacher I love your vids keep it up I know it's gona take a little bit to make vids but il wait
most cars cant just be worked on the way that they use to. you have to have way more expensive, computer based tools to do anything at all.
Facts, I been watching you since 2017. I've been a car enthusiast since I was kid, paul walker was my hero.
I'm 23 with no driver's license. I've wanted one but never really had the chance to practice and it sucks because things are so expensive now
Transportation? Or Bike guy?
@hectorvega621 I just don't go anywhere if I don't find a ride lmfaooo
I was able to find an okay deal on an used E210 Toyota Corolla hatch in manual, but I know that if I didn’t need a car, I wouldn’t have tried to get one in this economy…
All that said, I love my Corolla and I’m glad I have it.
