Thankyou for saying to not give up. I am the parent of a special needs teen who was fast tracked thru school and was made to memorize words without understanding. After 3 years of homeschooling and focusing on phonetic learning my teen read her first book both print and braille!

As a new special educator, I’ve been so frustrated by my county’s expectations and application of literacy for students with disabilities. My kids currently cannot read and ARE NOT EXPECTED to read. It infuriates me! I have decided that my students will no longer be held to my county’s stupid understanding of their potential. I am focusing on phonemic awareness for my kids this year. Thank you for this video. I’m so tired of being told your kids don’t need to read- THEY DO! And most importantly they can.

Having coached sped reading classes for 7 years, I so appreciate this video. The blending piece is key for our students. We taught our students to “sing” the sounds when blending. It was so helpful.

I just read the same book - so incredible - love the idea that no one is too anything to learn to read. I really appreciate your channel and your overall positivity. I’m a veteran educator - returning to the classroom after doing admin for a while and I connect so much with your videos and generally outlook. Thank you!

Thank you for posting this. I took the classes you describe but most of my learning came from the job as a para professional. Working in the grades as a para taught me about reading and writing.

I love this video and it is right on time. I'm a 9 year SPED teacher and looking for more ways to help support my kids in Reading. Often times they are identified as needing decoding or additional support but overlooked because they have IEPs. Thank you for the information 😊

I’ve been using the S.P.I.R.E reading curriculum this year, it is FREE right now!! It’s an Orton Gillingham approach. I had really been struggling with trying to implement the research of the science of reading into my classes when we aren’t provided the explicit and direct instruction materials out kids need.

I'm not a special ed teacher, but I do teach ELA so this video is relevant to me. When you said at a certain point we give up on students and their ability on reading it resonated with me. Although our curriculum doesn't require a whole lot of reading, I am determined to implementing more of it this year (even with all the roadblocks we will have to deal with). Thank you for such a thoughtful video, friend. ❤️
