All great performances. I love Hiatt and Cray. Tracy Nelson used to be a DJ on KPFA in Berkeley before she formed Mother Earth. What a fantastic and sadly overlooked singer. I've got, and treasure, a bunch of her recordings.
Cryptic but unlikely. He's been great but gotten litte attention since the 1980s. I wouldn't expect his fame to increase. I love him. But he's not going to emerge at this point.
I never thought that anyone could do "when something is wrong with my baby" as well as the fabulous Sam and Dave, but Robert Cray and John Hiatt did it on this show. Loved it.
Robert Cray sings "If my baby has a problem…oh I know, I know, I know. Oh, I know I have got to her solve them". I saw this when it aired and I have never forgotten the unbelievable phrasing and phenomenal depth of that line. This show was so important to me. And although it changed names, bounced endlessly around NBC's schedule and sometimes aired after three in the morning- I would still never miss it. Thank you truly for uploading these.
The original "World's Most Dangerous Band". I believe Tracy Nelson had the honor of being the first to record a John Hiatt composition. And the guitar player's moves-could that be a young GE Smith?
OK, now, I LOVE Robin Ford, and he is a true master of what he does, but I felt bad for him trying to fill Sonny Landreth's part. It's just not his thing!
I spent many midshifts analyzing reactor coolant chemistry listening to Robert Cray. His style has a midnight feel to it.

Fantastic, never seen Cray and Hiatt together before, brilliant.
Mr.Cray is so very undervalued, for tthe talent he shows in voice & guitar. Some day he will emerge from the shadows of more mediocre "artists".

I saw John Hiatt and Robert Cray in Houston. Small venue. Front row seats. Great memory.
Rockefeller's, Fitzgerald's , Walter's on Washington ?
Tracy is the BEST
So glad I stumbled on this series!

@@nilanperera4774 There's an FB group "Fat Man and the Hard Blues", devoted to Hemphill with a ton of links to Hemphill stuff....
Can't say enough about Mr. Hiatt; way beyond smart C & W, transcended that , & we can only say, great anericana tunes !!!

They tricked me with the last number - intro had a "Spill the wine" vibe going.

+sarmy282 You get it Sir. That line touched my soul direct. Ain't music grand?
+sarmy282 Every show had a number that brought it, and that was it this time!
+Sjean MacLeod It surely can be
Too bad I missed most of the second season due that I enlisted in the Navy. I was probably in boot camp in Orlando when this episode aired. No TV! 😞😞
