I taped this show every Sunday night and watched it at 3AM when I got home from the late shift. Lost the tapes over the years in moves while raising a family. I’d like to personally think all the people who saved their tapes, digitized them, and uploaded them to RUclips so that we could have this fantastic archive. This is treasure to me ❤
It was a dream for me to see jazz on television, but this show did so much more. It was fun, weird, and introduced me to some terrific new music. When a show has Conway Twitty performing with The Residents...that will never happen again. Glad these rare gems are around for people to watch.
Lou Reed's "Dirty Boulevard" à la 6e minute et "Walk on the Wild Side" à 37:40 (saxophoniste : David Sanborn) Harry Connick à 10:45 et 32:30 Katy Webster à 14:40 et 28:40 John Cale & Lou Reed à 18:45 "You've got the style it takes" + "Nobody but you"
Sanborns sax solo at the end of Boulevard was balls. And props to the bass player for doing the mashed potato while playing. I was always so impressed on how tight the band sounded on songs they had never played before that week.

Katie Webster is rocking. She's a real discovery for me.
Wow I had John Cale confused with J.J. Cale! I was like wait a minute J.J. Cale was in Velvet Underground? That makes no sense and why didn't I know that? Okay wrong guy! lol
Thanks a bunch for the incredible post of this specific edition of the monumental NIGHT MUSIC. I never saw this particular show but I do recall John Cale during my work stint in East Village and I can say that he was one of the nicest gentleman I had the pleasure of dealing with on numerous occasions. In terms of Harry Connick jr., he was way ahead of his time not in terms of his musical abilities but his generosity and character as well as commitment to his fellow musicians from what I know.
Much respect for HCJ, but Paul said it right "almost a little too over-confident" Haha! Harry was indeed... this early in his career he was really pushing those boundaries almost too hard... Yet within 5 years he would refine his style and exercise more discipline than one could imagine... Truly he was a modern day Sinatra by the mid 1990's. (Check out 'RedLight/Blue Light')
So Lou had a stipulation that stated John Cale not be included in the finale? Also why wasnt Conick Jr. on piano for this and who's bright idea was it to cut the song short.
Such a prick, Reed was. And imo was never anything without a worthy collaborator like Cale or Bowie. I love Velvet Underground but cant stand Reed as a person. What an asshole
YEAH NO THAT'S KATIE WEBSTER, BOOGIE-WOOGIE QUEEN AS OPPOSED TO GLADYS KNIGHT, EMPRESS OF SOUL, WHO IS NOWHERE TO BE FOUND... TSK TSK TSK (ESP SINCE WEBSTER WAS ON MULTIPLE EPISODES)
Ariel Cohen Yeah, he didn't have the same impact in modern music as ...Jools Holland, Harry Connick Jr., Paul Shaffer and Glady's Night. Are you fucking kidding me? An ex-new wave band musician and tv-presenter, a Sinatra crooner revivalist, a TV bandleader and session musician and a decent soul singer. Compared to them, Lou Reed might as well have been Mozart.
It is far better to remain silent and appear to be a fool, than to open your mouth and remove all doubt. Lou Reed was a seminal voice in avant garde "modern music" whatever the frack that means. Too bad you missed it.

after watching a bunch of episodes, I've come to the conclusion this should be called Night, Music and Mullets..
This is show was proof that 80s music was king. Stayed up late as a high schooler to marvel
and groove to this magic.
WOW! We sure could use a show like this nowadays!!
Boy. Who knew Harry Connick Jr. could play like that? I have new found respect for him.
His album 25 is my favorite piano solo record ever.
Man!!! I haven't heard anything from Harry Connick Jr in YEARS!!!! Always LOVED this brother's music!!!

Songs for Drella is a work of art.
Nobody does "three chords and some attitude" better that Lou Reed! RIP!
Only a show like this could have Robben Ford lurking in the wings incognito
Loved night music in the late eighties...so happy 😁 to have it on utube💖😊
Lou Reed's "Dirty Boulevard" à la 6e minute et "Walk on the Wild Side" à 37:40 (saxophoniste : David Sanborn)

That was the most enjoyable evening of television I've had in way too long. (btw - that is Katie Webster, NOT Gladys Knight). Thanks for posting!
What a wonderful show.
Supposedly Lou tried to get the folks who commissioned Drella to take Cale’s name off the album. 🙄
He was such a difficult person.

Hugely influential show for me, thanks so much for posting!
Lou is amazing!
Another thank you.
wow
Thank you for posting this. Good memories!
Love this Lou Reed so much! Thank you a lot for posting!
I used to love this show and I have absolutely no memory of Jules Holland being any part of it. Goes to show how selective our memories can be!
Jools not Jules
"You're people...."
to listen
Superb post, but Gladys Knight was no where to be seen.
Whats is name of the black woman singer and pianist ?
I really want a piano like that, what’s the make and model
So Lou had a stipulation that stated John Cale not be included in the finale? Also why wasnt Conick Jr. on piano for this and who's bright idea was it to cut the song short.

Lou Reed...waaaaay out of his depth.....what an artistic lightweight

***** ; as always good taste is its own reward...
+Ariel Cohen You obviously don't have the insight or feeling for music that David Sanborn did -- and does. Thank goodness he made these programs.

Edward Nethery : well said
How I dislike Paul Schafer
