Besides the obviously great musical talent; the sound levels were dialed in so perfectly, which made their wonderful performances just that much more special....
Man oh man, thanks for posting these 'Night Music' episodes. It was a brilliant show! NBC on Friday nights. Of course it didn't last. Too much quality for US audiences.
Also all the 'backing band' were great players in their own right - people like Hiram Bullock, Marcus Miller, Jools Holland and Dave Sanborn had full time careers... according to Jools the recording of the TV show became too much of a commitment for some of them. Like you say though... an incredible venue while it lasted for decent music and artistes. Bless RUclips for keeping it alive across the world beyond the reach of localised TV schedules
Thanks for posting...I was in the audience. The audience sat on steel bleachers and a very small audience indeed. Patti Labelle sat beside me. Given tickets by Bibi Green. We went to the Lorne Michaels after party and drank 12yr scotch and ate appies until 04:30 Gratis. One of the very best nights of my life.
Clapton was amazing here, a great version of a an old classic, and playing old love which he and Cray would have written probably that year for the journeyman album, which would become a classic, and probably my favourite Eric Clapton song. I'm glad somebody said something about the joker jacket though : D lmao, it's almost fcuking distracting me from the masterful musicianship ...
Look at Papa Wemba and band again and doublecheck your scorecard, dude. (It was indeed a fantastic show all around, and even the brainfried ex-junkie didn't ruin it.)
This is the best I have seen Eric play. Yes, I know, I too, have watched his arc. Here he feels it, no "phonin" it in" nor bein' too shiny or worn. Well Played
Thanks for posting - good sound quality too. Made me smile.... oh the days of BIG hair and slick suits and that's only the guys, where have they gone. :)
Actually the late 80ties were the High Time, the Golden Age of Sampling. Listen to Public Enemy and the Bomb Squat for the Pinacle of Sampling as great Art.
i know this comment is old as hell, but music is alive and well in many forms today. plenty of killer bands out there who don’t used programmed stuff or samples. just gotta be up with the times to hear stuff that isn’t too 40 jams
Maybe 'loonie ' Cray was at 1976 Birmingham England concert when a drunkin' Clapton went on a white only Briton rant. (Eric once slept in Muddy Waters home). Or maybe Crazy Robert thought of the irony of a '$16,000 a week heroin habit (EC quote), EC" blamed side effects of the 2020 vax Astrazeneca. But detailed symptoms he'd disclosed as early as 2013 and previously blamed on neurological problems", Rolling Stone- Jeff Slate 2021
Hard to believe there was a time when Eric Clapton thought he couldn't sing.
Besides the obviously great musical talent; the sound levels were dialed in so perfectly, which made their wonderful performances just that much more special....

Damn! Cray and Clapton sounded great together.
PAPA WEMBA FOREVER
Man, I miss the quality and variety of this show. It was way to good to last.
RIP Papa Wemba
Look at that 7-up green strat Eric Clapton is playing , NICE ! Great show !!
Loved this era Clapton tone, lace sensor pickups and soldano amps. Then again Cray sounds great too!
That strat was a loaner from Manny's Music in NY because Eric's gear was lost that day.
@@Mark-ld5um where did you hear this? The rumor is that it was one of his first prototypes that was resprayed green.
Shungu Wembadio Ekumani Nkuru Yaka!
Clapton is such a talent!
One of the truely great sax players, Davids work on Diamond dogs and David Bowie live is unbelievable, what a line up this is
Clapton's vocals is as good as his guitar playing.
Besides the Joker suit, This was so good to see again........wow
Love that Robert Cray Self Defense clip!
best show ever night music there is better stuff on here in 3 seasons than the grammys and awards in 30 years
Am so enjoying all these trips down memory lane listening to all these gifted musicians _ thanks for sharing...

Man, this must've been really funny to watch on TV back then, still is. Robert Cray's bit was funny af.

Great vocals from Eric. I sometimes forget this.
i never do. Nobody can sing like him...when he wants
Amazing.
Dan Hicks and his Acoustic Warriors "won" this round, but just a fantastic show all around.
Thank you.

Juliee Cruise!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! wow.........................love eternal!
This is the best I have seen Eric play. Yes, I know, I too, have watched his arc. Here he feels it, no "phonin" it in" nor bein' too shiny or worn. Well Played
Clapton and Sanborn recorded a noodling session and sold it to the producers of Lethal Weapon as a soundtrack.
RIP PAPA WEMBA 😔❤️❤️
Thanks for posting - good sound quality too. Made me smile.... oh the days of BIG hair and slick suits and that's only the guys, where have they gone. :)

So Eric Clapton was the man behind the joker makeup this whole time and no one ever suspected a thing.
What a show, I was too rushed to post, these artists are amazing, this has to be one of the greatest music shows I have ever seen
Missing Before You Accuse Me by Clapton & Cray
alright thanks 4 posting this!
Tommy Z does a nice version of this tune "Old Love”.
Best Joker ever!
& Eric walked in with that brotherly hifi! ❤
Please upload #213 with Nick Charlie and Toot's
...read that dan hicks died a few days ago....
So sad Robert cray became such a left wing loonie. Eric have him so many opportunities and friendship

I think he’s doing just fine. Maybe it was Robert who gave Eric the chances, ever think of that?
