Thousands of miles away in a tiny village (300 inhabitants) at the very south of Greece, near Sparta, once more watching and listening to SIR J.J. and his friends.. Thank you...
going to Spetses with fam this year!
Incredible comment… music is truly the one thing that can unite us all. Cheers from Texas 🤠
Music Healing yeah!!
one musically driven
God Bless Greece... . Nice place, nice people.
This proves RUclips is the greatest app invented. You could wait a lifetime waiting for some TV network to show this. Now the whole world can see this when ever they want to. Thanks for the upload...
interstategar oo.
@interstategar I fully subscrive!!! Sooo true!
Big Band up in the skies is getting to be way bigger and interesting than down here on Earth... along with JJCale and Leon Russell, many great ones are already sorely missed here. Undoubtfully RnR was a unique, unrepeatable season in music history. Great times when they were all alive and kickin'!
right on!
interstategar too true brother, peace to you.
I could listen to JJ play guitar all day . A true maestro
After midnight Is cool, smoking a cigg while playing.
Rilassante, armonioso, dolce❤❤
I first saw JJ on a snowy night in January of '77 at a place called PB Scotts in Blowing Rock, NC. Great 3 hour set in support of his Troubadour album. Great show, then we came out to 6 inches of fresh snow. JJ had the smoothest hand on a fret board I ever saw. Effortless. Got to see him 3 more times over the years.
RIP JJ, and Thank You!
Wow this is a great comment to see, as someone who has only known or lived in blowing rock since the mid 80s. I can picture it! ✌️
Beautiful memory. Thanks.
It's hard to believe these 2 incredible talents are no longer with us, but their unique music shall live on forever. RIP Leon & JJ
I feel lucky to have seen so many great bands. What a great time to be young.
They are only dead, not alive, which demands balls of steel to get over sixty!

Insieme sono sublimi
JJ Cale and Leon Russell were two of a kind in that they never stepped on their music. Just smooth and laid back. I wish life was that way. We would love more.
Nice.
JJ was the only person who never stepped on cocaine! :)
You know what the dream team could have been in dreams: Leon Russell, JJ Cale and Mark Knopfler
And Eric Clapton, of course
You Bet; slow and bluesy boogie!🎉
About 47 years ago....when I was 33...I discovered Leon and also the Mad Dogs And Englishmen Band. Saw most of those folks in person back then. including Leon twice and Joe Cocker once. They both filled the old Long Beach Auditorium to the rafters. Now at almost 80 I will be in the front row at Centrum's Acoustic Blues Festival at that Old Blimp Hanger they call McCurdy Pavillion here in Port Townsend. And will be attending 'Blues In The Clubs' ...Do yourself a BIG Favor1 Go see live music everytime you have the opportunity! Your SOUL will thank you.
That's some damn good advice right there. If there's a show, and you're wondering "should I go?", the answer is yes. I've sure let a lot of opportunities slip away over the last 25 or 30 years. Damnit.
Exactly 💝🎼☮️🎼💝
amen brother...much younger, but enjoyed all those bands BACK THEN!!!....a big hug from the bus people!!!!
talk about live music, our band, the bus people sets up at shows with full rock band equipment, then whomever likes can play the instruments and drums.....my favorite live show was not c.s.n. or the dead, but buffy st. marie on the new haven green about 20 years back. And then seeing her ten feet away at the first iraq war protest in washington singing the universal soldier, just her and a guitar and mabe 40 or so people.
@@Maria-tm2eu That's what I do . . . and I'm Scottish and live in Munich, Germany - and despite covid there's plenty good live music (of the right sort . . . . . !!!) going on out here!!
JJ Cale (vocal, guitar), Christine Lakeland Cale (vocal, guitar), Leon Russell (piano) , Bill Boatman (guitar), Jimmy Karstein (drums), Larry Bell, (organ), Marty Grebb, Nick Rather (bass), Pat 'Taco' Ryan (saxophone), Shamsi Sarumi (percussion), Ambrose Campbell (percussion)
Thank you for this important information!
do you know who the other guy on guitar is?
Whoops! Further research indicates he is Bill Boatman. I had his name but not his instrument in my initial comment but I have revised it now.@@woollythewombat995
awesome, thanks!@@SingleMalt77005
Thank you so much! Do you know if Leon played piano for Joe Cocker? Does anyone know please? This is an incredible lineup.. unique sound so chilled and laid back and one just wants more and more ❤

I love the style of Leon Russell, and his look. What a class he's got. Anyhow, JJ Cale is God.
Two Tulsa boys. Legends.
Two proud Tulsans and godfathers of the legendary Tulsa Sound!😊
Righteous!!! Love these guys!!!!!
Amazing! Proud to be a Tulsan and to have lived in the 70's. What a time for music.❤
You got that right. Proud Tulsan!! Go Tulsa Sound!!
Same here! If you have not already, check out 'Leon Russell Homewood session 1970'. Lots of good Tulsan musicians in that one too.
I envy you...
I’m almost ashamed to say I’ve never heard of JJ Cale until recently, after 45 yrs on this planet and to see this w Leon is mind blowing. I seriously can’t stop listening.

I guess that once JJ started collecting song writing royalties he might have thunk to himself that he could just slide on by. He was unknown to most of us for a time. Yet another good reason to read liner notes, when you can get them. That seems to be a thing of the past. Bands used to include the names of instruments and musicians on the recordings and I used to study them. You might be surprised at what you can learn from liner notes. Liner notes is a term from back in the time of vinyl LP records.
Hahahaha, me too. Genius!
Welcome✌️
Years ago..I am guessing mid 70s an ad showed in a local paper: Leon Russell in town doing a gig.. at a local club in DC. We went and there he was..very small crowd. I was in total awe. The venue was so small that some people actually got up and danced. just unreal. those were really the good old days at least for our generation.
I'm totally agree with you
I saw Leon Russell at a small-ish club of like 3-400 ppl about 6 months before he died. Even in old age- one of the best concerts I’ve ever seen.
I saw Leon Russell
Totally agreed but I bet he’d love to have played a full house though.
@@jjmuni Of course! We guessed that he was in town for one night and just decided why not? and played a small venue. I can't even remember the name of the place.. DC in the old days had all kinds of cool little places like Blues Alley..I am just grateful that I got to see some of the greatest musicians just because I lived in Alexandria.
One of the best jam sessions I have ever heard.
ME2...I LOVE IT.......I love playing my guitar along with it, because it just is SO COOL........Leon, he REALLY is SO funny here too, he is really enjoying himself, as is averyone else, here, playin with the "man".... JJ.........I guess he played with a lot of people, in his life.......Clapton sure enjoyed playing with him too..I must have played this vid about 50 times already, and NEVER get tired of it.....Such great music like this is timeless...
This is what musicians do Jimi would've fit right in there

I mean, I FEEL LIKE I'M THERE, man. Pure, uncut, nostalgia on many levels
I love this video. How lucky are we somebody saved it? JJ Cale seduces listeners, lyrics, and melodies in sultry understated elegance. As genuine an artist as you'll ever see.

A really special & priceless upload. Tulsa times. Thank you so much. Nice to see over 4 million have dropped in. JJ Cale, the great influencer, who altogether rejected the limelight. Even said he was primarily just a songwriter. We all know better! ♥
One of the best?
@@danielhickman2583 It's enough to just say that I'm a huge fan 🙂 Songwriting is just such a broad spectrum! I think JJ had his very own unique style which even Eric Clapton followed with a certain amount of awe. I'll bet there are many big names out there who were inspired by this man. Mark Knopfler is another. These sessions are really classic JJ Cale at just the right time. Nice to see him getting 5 million views. That's a lot of views for a guy who didn't even enjoy promoting his new albums by touring, etc. When you hear him chatting away in between songs, you can tell he's enjoying it all a great deal ♥
I was there. I ran one of the cameras and also edited the final show as you see it here. We had one of the very first computerized video editing facilities around. I wired up helped design that facility. That was in 1979 in Burbank, CA. Steve Ripley recorded and mixed the sound. There were about 6 or 8 other people involved in this production and none of us received any credit - NONE.Our names are not on the titles. Instead a bunch of other people are listed as director, producers, editors etc and I've never heard of any of them. No one by those names was ever around that studio in the 5 years I worked there from 1977 till 1981 and trust me none of them had anything whatsoever to do with the production of this video. Where's Diane Sullivan's name? Jack Jester? Tom Kemp? Gordon Rudd? I was there. What gives? WTF?
That sucks man . You were a part of history and didnt even get a mention? I believe you.
youtube is huge and now I believe you will receive the credit and recognition you deserve. Excellent job sir, I salute you. If nothing else you have a memory of being part of something that most will never come close to. Thank you for your efforts.
That is what happens when you work with a bunch of guys who are drugged out of their gourds. Only the dope providers receive the recognition. I appreciate your time and expertise. It was nice listening.
Which drugged out guys are you referring to? It wasn't the audio/video crew - I can attest to that. It wasn't the musicians. Many musicians don't partake and if they ever did it was way back in the 60s when they were young and was long since put aside. These here musicians are like that. I know them all personally. If you played in their bands and were found to do drugs you were fired immediately. You will find that the better the musicians - the less foolishness is tolerated. It's hard enough to play music this well when sober. Same is true with highly technical jobs like audio/video.The work is too demanding to be accomplished if you are high or drunk. So again - what are you talking about? What I am pissed about is that 30 some years after this show was played, recorded, edited and finished it fell into someone's hands who put their names on it, released it and are making money off it as if they - not we - were responsible for it's existence. It's not about drugs, drug "providers" or whatever you're talking about. It's about money and honesty.
Yep. Money and honesty, too.
There will never be another J J Cale.
No one is sure there will ever be another one! 5:53
A modest genius who tops the list of the most underrated underappreciated guitar players/song writers ever. His guitar influence on Mark Knopfler and post 80's Clapton.Songs like Cocaine, They Call Me The Breeze, After Midnight, Same Old Blues Again... JJ you left us much too early man !
🙏
Songs like Cocaine and After Midnight,is not influenced by JJ Cale-they are his compositions!!!Just thought it was important to know.I bought his albums as they got made. And he just got better and better-Rest in Peace.
Christine Lakeland standing right in front of J.J. has always been his muse. I like to think that he wrote all those fantastic songs about her. They were together until his passing in 2013. "Tell her you love her each and everyday".
Im proud to say ive played music with Leon Russell, during the 96 Olympics opening the tennis venue, i never will forget that time we blended spiritually, and Atlanta rhythm section wasn't too shabby either 😂
fantastic! would have loved to meet him!
A great lifetime memory and achievement!

It is unfortunate that some artists need to be well on their way before they are recognized for their genius. JJ Cale was a genius. He is my all time favorite. God bless JJ Cale. I hope he is playing in heaven. That would make heaven truly heaven.

But they still have left behind a legacy, and here we are still getting entertained IN PERPETUITY! ❤💔
Yes I’ve missed some bands I never got to see. But I saw some great ones. We saw Dylan a few years back at The Edgfield Oregon, near Portland. I never got to see any Beatles. I saw Aerosmith and Neil Young. Then more recently we saw U2 in BC Vancouver. That was mind blowing 🤷🏼♀️☮️💟☯️
God......could you just imagine being in that room at that time with this level of music coming at you. I think I would have fainted.
Mr. JJ Cale R.I.P. such A Huge Loss Of Great Talent. The first time i saw JJ was at a little lounge in Taos New Mexico around 1994 or so, it only held about 110 People .I was sitting at the front table, nobody was in there yet, and JJ came out sat on his amp with his Black Ovation Acoustic Guitar, I asked him if i could take some pictures of him, he said OK, then he handed me his Ovation and said do you want to play it, I almost shit my pants, I played a few chords as we were talking and gave it back to him. I though i had Died and went to Heaven. I have the picture of him handing me his guitar, i will cherish it forever, Cousin Figel
He really loved small venues. Didn't like a lot of people around, and he was always personal.
How do you know? The truth is that you don't know so do us all a favor and just keep quiet
Lucky you my man. I never got to see JJ. One thing I'll never do on my bucket
list. Did see Leon several times. Last year with Dave Mason and they were both great. Leon hadn't been that good in years. Nothing like giging with a brother.
John Spriggs, I saw Leon Probably 7 times in my life, the first time was the Mad Dogs and Englishman tour in 1970 or what ever year it was, What A Show...... The Last time I saw Leon was in Tucson AZ Late 2015 or early 2016, my memory is not that good anymore... Cousin Figel
speaking to iron feliks asshole
Leon’s voice is so cool, soulful and jazzy on “Same Ole Blue’s”.
“Sensitive Kind” and “Don’t Cry Sister” are my favorite songs love, Christine’s backup voice.
Wish I could turn the volume up!😊
JJ and Leon are both gone now, but we still have this great music to celebrate their legacies and keep their memories alive forever...
This just flew by as I watched....J.J. might seem laid back at first hearing but he keeps that train rolling. The band knows what they're doing too. J.J. with Leon, priceless.
I think Leon is just sitting across the studio at his keyboards, looking at JJ with awe… and Leon is no slouch himself.
May their souls rest in peace.

Grew up in OK and was a fan of Leon Russell and saw him in concert in 1971, opening for the Beach Boys. But, I hadn't heard of JJ Cale until coming across this video session. Now I'm a fan of both. So sad that they're both gone. Enjoy RUclips for gems like this.
JJ is a very unique guitar player and his songwriting is just as signature
He built his own guitar! So I say he is unique:)
Huge huge fan of JJ Cale here. I recently found this solo concert he did with Leon Russell, another great artist who may be gone, but, like JJ Cale, will never be forgotten.
Great recording! Thanks RUclips for hosting things like this
I had no idea JJ Cale was such a fine, accomplished guitar player! his sound is laid back but he's goin' for it and really hittin' it in this session. Without question Mark Knopfler was influenced by this kinda feel. Great post, Thanx.
That’s why Clapton invited him to Crossroads.
As well as Eric Slowhand Clapton ... Just listen to Lay Down Sally
JJ’s fingerpicking style blew me away the first time I heard him play Call Me The Breeze on his first album. I’ve been listening to him for almost 50 years and I never grow tired of hi . The unique sound of that old Harmony guitar, though...
Neil Young's favorite 2 electric guitar players were Hendrix and JJC.
according to Neil Young it was Jimi bujt second had to be Cale. Dont know what context he couldve meant or etc etc. However that statement was made
This films is such a treat. J J Cale at his peak, playing with friends, his classic 'bespoke' Harmony guitar with the beautiful Christine Lakeland making eyes at him.
They later married
Fuck you and your stupid, nonsensical idea of what his 'peak' was. When it comes to an artist, like this, he didn't have a pointed peak, with a tiny surface area, like Mt. Everest. He had a flat peak, with a massive surface area, like Olympus Mons. J.J. was at his 'peak', whenever he played music for the world.
Wow,@@CooManTunes, do you really think that tone was warranted? Life is so much more pleasant when you don't spend it attacking folks unprovoked.
For me his peak will always be the 80's. Grasshopper is a masterclass of songwriting in itself. Later albums were great, but never had the same magic vibe again.
@@CooManTunes Haha. I don’t know what planet you’re on mate, but I suggest you drop the needle on Troubadour, sit back and chill the fuck out. To claim it’s nonsensical to say that J J Cale’s prime was in the 70s is, well, nonsensical. His five classic albums, containing his most famous and enduring songs, are from that era. I’m not dissing any of his other records, the early 80s ones are fine, but there is a drop off in quality later on that only a fool would deny (he claimed himself to have spent most of the 80s “Mowing the lawn and listening to Van Halen and rap”). The analogue 70s suited his style perfectly, the move to digital recording, the use of synths and that overly clean Casio strat he later played sucked some of the soul out his music. Yes, he still made laid back, quality music in his inimitable style, but 74-79 was his peak. Open your ears and listen.
Heroes. God bless 'em. Thank you for all the love Russell and JJ ❤️

My BEST days are when I find a new song (for me) by JJ Cale to whom I have listened since 1965. This is such a day. Thank you.
This is Superb. The Quality of the playing. Everyone connected, Listening (No Wonder living creatures love and need Music). Joy. How lucky we are to live in This World where sound Exists and Exists Everywhere. That affects us so directly and powerfully - that we able to change how we feel - purely through contact with it. THANK YOU, This is a Wonderful GIFT!
