I was singing along to every song I knew on the stairs up to the stage and his drummer noticed me and was just amazed that I knew the words to the songs. When the show was over he told me to follow him and took me to their tour bus. He went in for a second, came back out and told me to give him something to sign, that Leon never signs anything and that I need to give him something, I gave him the shirt off my back, he came back out moments later with the shirt signed by every member of the band and his drumstick that he used that night. I got to see Leon in May 2016 in a small venue up at Big Bear Lake (Southern California) and it was amazing. His hands glided over the piano keys like magic. Never seen anything like it. I was only about 20 feet away.
Using George Harrison for clickbait. The video barely mentions the relationship between him and Leon Russel. Harrison’s early influences were people like James Burton and Carl Perkins. He incorporated them into his music and fairly quickly developed his own style. You can hear the influence in What Goes On from Rubber Soul. Harrison kills it. Russell began his relationship with Harrison as a studio musician that developed into a lifelong friendship. I saw Harrison live on tour I believe in 1972. Awesome show even though Harrison was recovering from a cold and sore throat it was still so awesome.
Leon and George were good friends. Interviews with George showed he put the word out on the musical streets to try to track him down after he became recluse. The headlines here are annoying and implies there were issues there.
I saw Leon with Edgar Winter in a small Toronto Club 35 years ago. It was a truly amazing show and when they played Masquerade there was no way to stop yourself from crying.
A big problem with this kind of program is the disjunction between the text and the illustrations. I once heard the name Joseph Stalin spoken over the image of Harry Truman. There is a lack of respect for the artists, as well as us.
"HANK WILSON'S BACK" - A GREAT Album of Leon doing old school Country covers done in the early 70's - My favorate that my dad would ask me to turn the sound up insteàd of down or more often off.
Agree, I really love that song! We were lucky to have it pop up on transistor radio back in the 1970's, I was a kid then and fell in love with that song.👍🥰
A friend of mine worked with Leon, Ringo, and George recording an album of what my friend called, 'some of the most beautiful love songs I've ever heard.' When he finished the songs with Ringo and George, he decided to shelve them and write more songs on his own so he could get all of the publishing. Leon was more than likely both bipolar and autistic. Reading the book Leon Russell by Bill Janovitz shed a lot of light on that. Leon was a forceps baby, which is what more than likely caused his neurological problems that weakened his right side!
Leon Russell was a fantastic musician with so many great performances either with the Wrecking Crew or as a solo artists. I just wanted to see what silence was broken by Leon Russell about George Harrison. This video was a complete waste of time for me to watch since nothing was really mentioned about it.
My exact same observation. I was disappointed that the title was so misleading. Nothing against Leon, whatsoever, I expected to hear to a revelation and did not.
Back in the early 80's. I went to a cool FREE outoor event where people were floating around in the Russian River in Califronia in Intertubes. The whole town was part of 1 big party. Leon was the HeadLiner. What a Great Summer Week End. Had a Blast !!
The Tulsa sound still lives. I was so fortunate to attend many annual birthday parties at Cains Ballroom. Leon was and still is a giant talent. Tulsa is proud to claim him. There is a beautiful monument at his gravesite here.
@@chlynn13b92 I visited the Church Studio about 6 weeks ago. It is well worth the time and effort. I had a wonderful private tour given by Darla and we had a great conversation about Leon and the Tulsa sound, etc. They have Jamie Oldaker's drum set there all set up for current use. Lots of Leon memorabilia too. Go see it!!
I thought I had heard of most musicians, but I never heard of Leon until he passed away, I didn't realise he was involved with so many of the top bands and artists, he was definitely a musicians musician.
He was a favorite of mine as a teenager. If you want to here his best stuff, the first album, Leon Russell, Carney, Shelter People are the ones to check out. Willow the Wisp is good too.
@@scottmc59 Don't forget Leon's album 'Stop All that Jazz' which I recently rediscovered & am enjoying immensely, including the title tune. Leon really could play ANY genre.
@@scottmc59 I went to see Leon when I was a teenager and enjoyed the concert, but didn't appreciate him as I should have and only have dim memories of his long white hair and beautiful melodies.
I've been a fan since the early 70s. Was lucky enough to see him in a small theater that only held 500 people, in Morehead City, NC. He was awesome and glad to have his new bus that he said Elton John had helped him out with. He was probably the biggest musical influence of the 60s and 70s. He became a massia type figure after he got married. There was no artist that didn’t want to play with him.
I skipped forward to find the info on George and there was nothing revealing. Another clickbait title. I usually avoid these types of videos. Lots of times they are put together poorly, repeat the same thing over again, have misinformation and maybe talk one minute about what the headline says. What’s with that random solo picture of Elton John when they weren’t even talking about him at the time?
Like a good deal of these stories/info on my social media feeds, the lead headline was bogus!! I loved Leon Russell and his music, and saw him twice in Austin in the early/mid 1970s! What a talented musician , great performer, and gifted songwriter , he was! Included on the Shelter Records label was Freddie King, another favorite of mine and of the folks in Austin!
I don't think that Leon Russell played on "All Things Must Pass". He did cover the song "Beware of Darkness". And he did play on Eric Clapton's first (self-titled) solo album.
In my 60 plus years as an adult, i attended maybe 3 concerts , concerts worth mentioning Here in Phila, at the Academy of Music, i sat in the peanut gallery and watched what i consider the greatest assembledge of musicians and babies and dogs. I believe Mad Dogs and Englishmen album, is the greatest ever produced, with the songs ranging from blues, to soul to rock What is missing in ths bio is the mention of Elton John bestowing him to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, maybe 2014 a must watch on You Tube. I came into Mad Dogs thinking Cocker was King, and left with only one choice Russell There exists a video of the concert for those who are further interested. Thank you , Leon Russell, the master of Space and Time Oct 27 2024 Phila Ray aka herbert hoover
I saw the 1st show in Detroit. Leon had friends in Detroit, David Teegarden and Skip Knape, of Teegarden and Van Winkle and probably others. They were there 2 nights, so it was a party atmosphere, with Leon and some others going to this well know mansion where musicians lived. That concert was my first real one, not counting teen clubs where I did see some known bands. To this day, one of the most memorable ones and I've been to many. Like you, we all went for Joe Cocker but a lot of us became lifelong fans of Leon.
I was always a fan of Leon's.. My favorite was "Leon Russel & Marc Benno- Asylum Choir II" an underrated album but a gift to those who were lucky enough to hear it.
Golden Prime~ You really should edit your video. Leon was born in Lawton, OK. He didn't go North to Tulsa until later. He attended Will Rogers High School. Kurt Kobaine has NO place in anything Leon Russell. You sadly don't mention how his kids grew up & started playing with him. Yes he was semi retired when Elton John came along, it was a great thing Elton did for Leon!!
@TulsaGirlForever - Not only that, the narration of this video is done by AI and not properly edited by Golden Prime, so lot's of ideas are repeated numerous times. Letting an AI express things over and over is very tedious and sloppy for a content creator to allow. It is up to a good producer to EDIT the AI script for redundancies before publishing a video that is twice as long as it needs to be.
I attended the 1970 Mad Dogs and Englishmen concert in Seattle. A wonderful, fantastic, and memorable experience. It was more than a concert it was a party and celebration of the power of music. What a treat
Great testimony to Leon and his trail-blasing career. It was awesome. It was factual and informative. I had no idea he had cerebryl palsy and may have had alsymers. He was an inspiration to thousands of notable musicians and songwriters, including myself. I just wish the narrator would've pronounced names correctly. Ronnie VanZant and Gary Rossinton's band was Lynyrd Skynyrd, pronounced, Leonard Skinerd. Leon was a fighting genius, to say the least and a hero to me😂❤
'Silence about George Harrison was indeed SILENCE , Did I miss something. This might be the worst mini music doc of all time. Clueless! The photos match nothing, bizarrely hundreds of photos of Elton John, this is a mess! Don't waste 22 mins on this nonesense. ! Just play his records. (Did he know Kurt Cobain? Thought not)
I often wonder if a grade school kid puts these types of videos together. So many videos like this in RUclips. I hate the AI narration too that sometimes pronounces words wrong. Does anybody actually review these before they are posted?
I saw one of Russell's last solo concerts at Sideline's, Marrietta, GA. He was awesome. R.I.P. BTW - George Harrison's first solo album was an electronic ditty called "Wonderwall." Yea, the Oasis inspiration. Peace on earth.
btw, Wonderwall, harrison's first album, was NOT an "electronic ditty", it was the soundtrack from the movie of the same name, consisting both of indian music and rock oriented music. It was all instrumental, but there were no electronics in sight... It's actually quite listenable. Harrison's SECOND ALBUM, however, was Electronic Sounds, an absolute mess consisting of trying and failing (mostly failing), while droodling on one of the worlds first synthezisers.. There are no tunes, no rhythm... A true candidate for the worst album ever releeased by an established musician.
@@robertdjurhuuswasa1622 Wonderwall is not really a George Harrison album. It's a movie soundtrack. George has some music on it, but there are songs by others, too.
I saw Leon at the Cedar Cultural Center in Minneapolis in the year before his passing. Great talent, glad he is getting his acclaim. Although this video was sort of redundant and the videos were not matched well with the narrative. And we never find out about a riff with Harrison.
Bogus headline. Intro clip never explained or referred to again. Extremely long-winded video with photos repeated dozens of times. Reminds me of watch one of those huckster weight-loss ads that go on and on forever repeating themselves. Thumbs down despite my respect for Russell.
In the army i got a hit of acid because i had an 8 track player we tripped out on shelter people. The background back beats and sounds. Truly a stranger in a strange land.
Leon was a trailblazer from his Asylum Choir recordings with Marc Benno, which were wonderful, to the present day. Thank you for this wonderful video. R.I.P. Leon
At 6:02 that's Willie Nelson, not Joe Cocker. At 6:30 it's took on the role of ringMASTER, not ringleader. At 8:30 you neglect mentioning the most successful version of This Masquerade by George Benson.
He wasn't born in Tulsa. He was born in Apache. His family moved to Tulsa when he was about four. He was born with perfect pitch and started piano at four. Both parents and two aunts played piano.
@@SmittySmith-lu9bh He was because Apache didn't have a hospital. Also, he didn't move to Tulsa until he was11 or so. From Apache, his family moved to Maysville.
I wasn’t aware he influenced Linyard Sky-Nard and boy did he shake things up with his final truth about George Harrison. It was extra soulful having the whole thing narrated by a CG program matched with recycled photos of the wrong people.
They were not paid. They all went because they were friends of Leon's and probably loved Joe Cocker's music. A few went on to do great stuff, like Bobby Keys with the Stones, Rita Coolidge and her solo career.
@chlynn13b92 Leon went a bit crazy. The crazy number of musicians and singers and all the costs associated including private jets, lodging, "entertainment" et al left Joe broke. I heard Joe state this in an interview, and Leon skirted around the issue when I saw him live. It was a great tour (musically), but took a huge toll on a bunch of participants (including emotionally).
You want to talk about unjust... At least Leon is in the Rock-n-Roll Hall of Fame. Joe Cocker isn't. In fact, Dolly Parton is in the Rock-n-Roll Hall of Fame and Joe isn't. Now THAT is unjust!
Loved Leon during the 70s. He seemed to be everywhere on records and performances. I was waiting for the big reveal on George Harrison that never came, more of a platform for Russell, but that's cool. The video had me going until the Liney Skinard bit. LMAO.
This robot voice is used on a lot of videos like this and they are always so mediocre in content. Whenever I hear it’s bland tone I now know to move on.
Wife, this video is a fairly good overview of Leon Russell. It is full of mistakes. Some examples he was not born in Tulsa. He was born in Lawton and did not come to Tulsa until 1953. In the 1980s. He did not come back to his studio in Tulsa. By that time the studio was being run by Tulsan Steve Ripley. There is no mention of his success in 1971 at being part of the concert for Bangladesh. There are several more obvious mistakes in this video. Seek out other sources if you really want to know the truth
So many facts and photos don’t match in this story. Leon’s album Carney was my favorite and his performance in The Concert for Bangladesh was phenomenal.
You can now find Leon Russell's back catalog available on George Harrison's Dark Horse Records label, thanks to George's son, Dhani

I saw Leon with Edgar Winter in a small Toronto Club 35 years ago. It was a truly amazing show and when they played Masquerade there was no way to stop yourself from crying.
I saw that show in Boston.
His best song, musically speaking, is "TIGHT ROPE"! It's a masterpiece!
Agree, I really love that song! We were lucky to have it pop up on transistor radio back in the 1970's, I was a kid then and fell in love with that song.👍🥰
His true genius reached it's zenith w/ "A Song for you". Covered many times by the greats, including Donny Hathaway and played at countless weddings.
Whoa, I've been pronouncing Lynyrd Skynyrd's name wrong all these years... How embarrassing.
lol
me too
And apparently they misspelled their own name for about half a century. Glad this video showed 'em.
A lot of people have lol!
🎉🎉😂🎉 4:y😊
My exact same observation. I was disappointed that the title was so misleading. Nothing against Leon, whatsoever, I expected to hear to a revelation and did not.
Thanks stopping at 4:28
Back in the early 80's.
And The Church Studio! That place looks amazing and I love that it's a recording studio again. I hope to see it soon.
@@chlynn13b92 I visited the Church Studio about 6 weeks ago. It is well worth the time and effort. I had a wonderful
private tour given by Darla and we had a great conversation about Leon and the Tulsa sound, etc. They have Jamie Oldaker's drum set there all set up for current use. Lots of Leon memorabilia too. Go see it!!
Leon lived the Choctaw Bingo life ! A musical genius, larger than life!
This man rocked the roll !!!
I saw him in Headlines Music Hall in Louisville, Kentucky shortly before his death. He was fantastic.🎹🎶☮️
They don't seem to have a picture of Joe Cocker.🤔🤨 That's ok, learning more about Leon, loved his piano playing.
His Shelter People album with a definite rendition of Beware of Darkness is an alltime hit.
I had the honer to stand at his piano in Arlington Washington at a open air concert he was a great artest and a kind man RIP LEON
God bless Leon Russell, as he blessed us with his immense talent.
Stranger in a strange land💯🔥
Sittin' on a highway in a broken van
My favorite Leon song
...My favorite Leon song!!!
I wish he could have joined The Traveling Wilburys.
He did, he was Tom, George, Bob and Jeff rolled into one guy.
@maximusindicusoblivios180 lol
I've read that he was approached or that they had considered him. He was hard to find during this time.
And what was the silence about GH, don't watch this video if you were suckered in by the headline.
I am thinking the same thing. Misleading title. Click bait.
Like a good deal of these stories/info on my social media feeds, the lead headline was bogus!! I loved Leon Russell and his music, and saw him twice in Austin in the early/mid 1970s! What a talented musician , great performer, and gifted songwriter , he
was! Included on the Shelter Records label was Freddie King, another favorite of mine and of the folks in Austin!
Willie Nelson is NOT Joe Cocker
Willie is a crud ball rolled up in grease with 100 year old lint stuck to his head.
AI
Even KC jont the party…
Lean Ord Sky nard ? Wow 😂
yeah- and Kurt Cobain is not young Leon Russell...
I don't think that Leon Russell played on "All Things Must Pass". He did cover the song "Beware of Darkness". And he did play on Eric Clapton's first (self-titled) solo album.
Leon may have played on George’s songs at the concert for Bangladesh but he was not on All things must pass
@@motherlessblues1565 queried that one myself ...no wonder this needed... miss leading click bait
He played on Concert for Bangladesh @@motherlessblues1565
Pretty good but it has nothing to do about a big deal with George Harrison.
Enjoyed Leon many times when he visited SD. Absolutely loved everything he played ❤
In my 60 plus years as an adult, i attended maybe 3 concerts , concerts worth mentioning Here in Phila, at the Academy of Music, i sat in the peanut gallery and watched what i consider the greatest assembledge of musicians and babies and dogs. I believe Mad Dogs and Englishmen album, is the greatest ever produced, with the songs ranging from blues, to soul to rock
What is missing in ths bio is the mention of Elton John bestowing him to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, maybe 2014 a must watch on You Tube.
I still have it!
A load of waffle
Mmm...sounds scrumptious. Maple syrup or no? Cinnamon, yes?!
I think it's AI.
Thanks guys ...its a shame when people who put these together fail to get their FACTS straight. Also the Harrison clickbait bullshit
If you think this is ridiculous {and you should} check out "when Cher opened up about Leon Russell". It's very close to the same video.
Love Leon 💖🥰💯✌️🌹🌞r. i. p. Gorgeous💙 Genius ⭐
It took two minutes before I realized this video was going nowhere
Always loved Leon Russell!
Weird....at 2:16, that's a picture of Kurt Cobain, not Leon...
Uh, why was Kurt Cobain's pic flashed? Did someone think HE was Leon??? I saw Leon w/Willie, Waylon, and The Crickets and loved him always.
His solo scat singing in the Concert for Bangaladesh is the best ever performance
I attended the 1970 Mad Dogs and Englishmen concert in Seattle. A wonderful, fantastic,
and memorable experience.
@@pjg58xthis was largely AI generated (artificial intelligence)
Wish I'd read this comment first!
I saw one of Russell's last solo concerts at Sideline's, Marrietta, GA.
He was awesome. R.I.P.
BTW - George Harrison's first solo album was an electronic ditty called "Wonderwall."
Yea, the Oasis inspiration.
@@robertdjurhuuswasa1622 You are correct! It's been a long time... Like they say, "if you grew up in the sixties, uh, I forgot." Thanks!
@@robertdjurhuuswasa1622 Correct, love it, got the T Shirt!
@@robertdjurhuuswasa1622 Wonderwall is not really a George Harrison album. It's a movie soundtrack. George has some music on it, but there are songs by others, too.
Check out Day After Day by Badfinger.
Leon Played the piano for Pete Ham and the band. Pete Ham and George Harrison played slide guitar also.
I saw Leon at the Cedar Cultural Center in Minneapolis in the year before his passing. Great talent, glad he is getting his acclaim. Although this video was sort of redundant and the videos were not matched well with the narrative. And we never find out about a riff with Harrison.
Mad Dogs And Englishman was amazing!
Gonna watch it

Leon did not play on All Things Must Pass.
He got to play with Badfinger on Day After Day
Bogus headline. Intro clip never explained or referred to again. Extremely long-winded video with photos repeated dozens of times. Reminds me of watch one of those huckster weight-loss ads that go on and on forever repeating themselves. Thumbs down despite my respect for Russell.
Joe Cocker looks so much like Willie Nelson.
And a ypung Leon so much like Kurt Cobain 🙂

In the army i got a hit of acid because i had an 8 track player we tripped out on shelter people. The background back beats and sounds. Truly a stranger in a strange land.
Leon was a trailblazer from his Asylum Choir recordings with Marc Benno, which were wonderful, to the present day. Thank you for this wonderful video. R.I.P. Leon
Why is there a picture of Curt Cobain at 2:18?
At 6:02 that's Willie Nelson, not Joe Cocker. At 6:30 it's took on the role of ringMASTER, not ringleader. At 8:30 you neglect mentioning the most successful version of This Masquerade by George Benson.
George Harrison was my favorite Beatle.
Talking about Joe Cocker wile showing Willy Nelson is just disconnected. Get it together folks. This is disrespectful of both men.
The visuals in all these sort of videos is crap. Also the Harrison title is mostly crap and certainly click bait
He wasn't born in Tulsa. He was born in Apache. His family moved to Tulsa when he was about four. He was born with perfect pitch and started piano at four. Both parents and two aunts played piano.
Apache? I thought Leon was born in Lawton.
@@SmittySmith-lu9bh He was because Apache didn't have a hospital. Also, he didn't move to Tulsa until he was11 or so. From Apache, his family moved to Maysville.
You should match your videos with the audio. That gives it a professional quality.
I wasn’t aware he influenced Linyard Sky-Nard and boy did he shake things up with his final truth about George Harrison. It was extra soulful having the whole thing narrated by a CG program matched with recycled photos of the wrong people.
😅
The Mad Dog tour lost money... because of the musicians on the payroll. I saw Leon perform a year or two before his passing. He sounded Great!
I so agree! Madonna and many others that don't come close to Joe's talent.
Why is there a picture of Kurt Cobain?
Leon was a beautiful force. Handsome with talent, a rarity!
Leon was the best.
When you say Joe Cocker and show a picture of Willie Nelson. Just doesn’t make sense
Anyone heard that album he did with Elton John. I heard three songs from it. My 2 favorites are “Monkey Suit” and “Gone to Shilo” with Neil Young.
He’s not left out any conversations around here in my family here in Rome. R.i.P.
HA - I get it
Loved Leon during the 70s. He seemed to be everywhere on records and performances. I was waiting for the big reveal on George Harrison that never came, more of a platform for Russell, but that's cool. The video had me going until the Liney Skinard bit. LMAO.
😂😂👍 Me too!
Saw him in Louisville in 1974. One of my ATF concerts. Carny; one of my ATF albums. God bless him!
Leon's fan Forever.
I didn't get which was the style of Russell's music. A blend of what, exactly?
an Everan 😂🎉😂🎉
This robot voice is used on a lot of videos like this and they are always so mediocre in content. Whenever I hear it’s bland tone I now know to move on.
Track down the great les blank documentary on him that Leon didn't allow shown for years but you can find it now if you look hard enough
Thanks.
Leon was incredible. His story deserves to be told.
The title of this video is straight clickbait. He doesn't need that. Do better.
So, you show Kurt Cobain as Leon? What's wrong with you guys?
What a time it was, talk about moving n shaken rock n roll
Check out Leon Russell's Greatest Hits on CD. That is the only recording that I have.
Talking about joe cocker and showing willy nelson?? Kinda dumb.
So many facts and photos don’t match in this story. Leon’s album Carney was my favorite and his performance in The Concert for Bangladesh was phenomenal.
Leon Russell was born in Lawton, Oklahoma. And grew up in Apache, Oklahoma. A small town north of Lawton.
Clickbait title. Nothing new to learn here. Save yourselves twenty minutes and move on.
There was a picture of Cobain too. Not Leon.
