When I was probably 8 years old (2006), he came to Gruene Hall here in Texas. My dad had always raised me listening to his kind of music and I loved his Leon Russel CD. I was singing along to every song I knew on the stairs up to the stage and his drummer noticed me and was just amazed that I knew the words to the songs. When the show was over he told me to follow him and took me to their tour bus. He went in for a second, came back out and told me to give him something to sign, that Leon never signs anything and that I need to give him something, I gave him the shirt off my back, he came back out moments later with the shirt signed by every member of the band and his drumstick that he used that night. I'll never forget that.

Leon Russell was a legend in his craft whether it was producing his own music or that of others. He was a true pioneer.
The video mentions George Harrison but doesn't go into complete detail about their interactions. George respected Leon and the feeling was mutual. I never read anything that either of them said anything bad about the other.

I've had the pleasure of meeting Leon several times. After my wife's and had the first meeting, we were considered friends. After the second meeting, he actually remembered our names. It was then that all we had to do was let the box office know to tell Leon we were there and backstage after show all access was given to us. We always had a conversation with Leon and let him know that we were appreciative. He was a great person. Oh.....and by the way....always had killer food for everyone.

Met him through a friend many years ago. He used to come over the house and just hang out. I had no idea who he was. I was young and jaded. I had hung out with famous guitar players and just didn't realize who he was till one day my friend put Leons movie on TV. I about shit myself! My parents had his records when I was young and I grew up listening to him! After that day things changed. When he would come over I never bothered him and I tried not to act starstruck, tried! But through time and patience I like to think he took a shine to me cause we would often go to a local restaurant and eat lunch and the stories started coming out.
Leon was one hell of a human being, and his voice talking to him. Lots of good times!
Both Leon and my friend are gone now. Somebody bought my friends house but every time I drive by I think of them. I've been so blessed!

Leon had just become known to the public while touring with Joe Cocker during the Mad Dogs and Englishmen concerts. He was on his way to becoming a top R&R star by Nov of 1970. Elton wasn't really popular in England and didn't get known until he came to CA and played at the Troubadour. So, he was on his way to stardom, but it was Leon that asked him to go on tour with him, as his opening act.

Around 2008 I saw him at the now defunct Barcode Club in Asheville NC. He was in poor health, using a cane, & very weak. @@drewbaby2020 John started the Quarrymen, met Paul and invited him to join them. Paul brought George who was a couple of years younger and after a quick tryout he was asked to join. George was an extremely talented songwriter and musician and had an amazing solo career. He is the only Beatle I saw live. Lennon and McCartney were prolific songwriters and George had to try and crack that duo and talent to get his songs onto albums. I think some of the reported tension between them was overblown. I mean what artist wouldn’t love to have John and Paul singing backing vocals for them. George had the experience of working and gleaning from two of the best ever. He had one of the greatest careers and was adored by millions of fans. I think his real frustration came towards the end along with the rest of them when they finally broke up.

@@CharlesHoward-ud6qv Exactly--and I'm ancient and heard it all that way as it happened. Paul is the only one I was lucky enough to see. George sat down beside Paul on a bus when he was still a kid, Paul a few years older. Paul said they were probably the only two on that bus who played the guitar, and what were the odds... he always thought of him as another kid brother. At the end of George's life, Paul and George held hands as George lay on his death bed--Paul said, something they would have never have done as young, healthy men, but for those last moments they could be the brothers they had always been, and they loved each other.

Using George Harrison for clickbait. The video barely mentions the relationship between him and Leon Russel. Harrison’s early influences were people like James Burton and Carl Perkins. He incorporated them into his music and fairly quickly developed his own style. You can hear the influence in What Goes On from Rubber Soul. Harrison kills it. Russell began his relationship with Harrison as a studio musician that developed into a lifelong friendship. I saw Harrison live on tour I believe in 1972. Awesome show even though Harrison was recovering from a cold and sore throat it was still so awesome.

When he finished the songs with Ringo and George, he decided to shelve them and write more songs on his own so he could get all of the publishing.
Leon was more than likely both bipolar and autistic. Reading the book Leon Russell by Bill Janovitz shed a lot of light on that. Leon was a forceps baby, which is what more than likely caused his neurological problems that weakened his right side!

In my 60 plus years as an adult, i attended maybe 3 concerts , concerts worth mentioning Here in Phila, at the Academy of Music, i sat in the peanut gallery and watched what i consider the greatest assembledge of musicians and babies and dogs. I believe Mad Dogs and Englishmen album, is the greatest ever produced, with the songs ranging from blues, to soul to rock
What is missing in ths bio is the mention of Elton John bestowing him to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, maybe 2014 a must watch on You Tube. I came into Mad Dogs thinking Cocker was King, and left with only one choice Russell There exists a video of the concert for those who are further interested.
Thank you , Leon Russell, the master of Space and Time Oct 27 2024 Phila Ray aka herbert hoover

I saw the 1st show in Detroit. Leon had friends in Detroit, David Teegarden and Skip Knape, of Teegarden and Van Winkle and probably others. They were there 2 nights, so it was a party atmosphere, with Leon and some others going to this well know mansion where musicians lived. That concert was my first real one, not counting teen clubs where I did see some known bands. To this day, one of the most memorable ones and I've been to many. Like you, we all went for Joe Cocker but a lot of us became lifelong fans of Leon.

Golden Prime~ You really should edit your video. Leon was born in Lawton, OK. He didn't go North to Tulsa until later. He attended Will Rogers High School.
Kurt Kobaine has NO place in anything Leon Russell. You sadly don't mention how his kids grew up & started playing with him. Yes he was semi retired when Elton John came along, it was a great thing Elton did for Leon!!

    • @zedxxx9
      @zedxxx9 2 месяца назад +13

@TulsaGirlForever - Not only that, the narration of this video is done by AI and not properly edited by Golden Prime, so lot's of ideas are repeated numerous times. Letting an AI express things over and over is very tedious and sloppy for a content creator to allow. It is up to a good producer to EDIT the AI script for redundancies before publishing a video that is twice as long as it needs to be.

He was an inspiration to thousands of notable musicians and songwriters, including myself. I just wish the narrator would've pronounced names correctly. btw, Wonderwall, harrison's first album, was NOT an "electronic ditty", it was the soundtrack from the movie of the same name, consisting both of indian music and rock oriented music. It was all instrumental, but there were no electronics in sight... It's actually quite listenable. Harrison's SECOND ALBUM, however, was Electronic Sounds, an absolute mess consisting of trying and failing (mostly failing), while droodling on one of the worlds first synthezisers.. There are no tunes, no rhythm... A true candidate for the worst album ever releeased by an established musician.

In the 1980s. He did not come back to his studio in Tulsa. By that time the studio was being run by Tulsan Steve Ripley. There is no mention of his success in 1971 at being part of the concert for Bangladesh. There are several more obvious mistakes in this video.
