Film Description: Jane Austen's perennially popular story of the game of love among the British upper classes returns to the screen in this polished film adaptation. The Bennets (Brenda Blethyn and Donald Sutherland) are the parents of five daughters near the close of the 18th century. Comfortable within their means but well short of rich, Mr. and Mrs. Bennet are looking for suitable husbands for their girls, and they are encouraged to learn that an eligible young bachelor from a wealthy family, Charles Bingley (Simon Woods), has moved into a nearby estate. Eager to see if a match can be made, the Bennets bring their daughters Elizabeth (Keira Knightley) and Jane (Rosamund Pike) to a ball thrown by their new neighbor to see if sparks will fly. Jane seems to like Charles, and he appears to feel the same, but Elizabeth takes an immediate dislike to Darcy (Matthew MacFadyen), Charles' egocentric best friend. While Elizabeth is infatuated with military man Lt. Wickham (Rupert Friend) and finds herself courted by William Collins (Tom Hollander), a well-meaning but drab man of the cloth, fate causes Elizabeth and Darcy to frequently cross paths, and while they don't care for one another, they can't stop thinking about each other, either. Pride & Prejudice also stars Jena Malone, Judi Dench, and Penelope Wilton.

This entire scene was just Darcy making the most hopeless and desperate puppy dog eyes at Elizabeth while every single word he said was delivered in the most painstakingly awkward manner possible.
Yes, he cannot believe the woman he loves, who was rejecting him when he last saw her is there in his home.

This scene is so great because it depends purely on the acting and chemistry with the actors. Theres nothing about love or romance in that dialogue, but the chemistry, they way they look at each other, especially the way he looks at her, all seem to scream of a great love, just underlying. Beautifully played.
exactly
No kisses, no sex, but a lot of chemistry!!! It´s so romantic. It is body language.
Jane Austen would love your comment.
I’m not speaking about the actors necessarily, but the fact that for dialogue like this to have importance, there needs to be a connection, a chemistry, deep counter reactions to every movement, breath, and word and blink of an eye. ♥️

@@rebeccaespinosa8195 I know !! Its so cuteee
I just love how this film was directed. I never realized that Lizzie's behavior in this scene is a reflection of Darcy's behavior when he went to see her at Mr. Collin's home, all shy and awkward. Even through this small talk he's just so smitten by her. She doesn't realize that he wanted to walk with her back to village. She must've thought he meant he'd take her by carriage but when he reassures "yes, i know." That she loves to walk, its almost like he's trying to tell her that he's paid attention to little things. She noticed this and just decides to leave. You can see the disappointment in his face that she didn't accept his offer of walking her back. This whole film is perfection.
yes. The whole film he is taking her advice. First meeting she tells him to dance to encourage affection. At the ball he asks her to dance. She tells him to practice talking and social skills, and the next day he comes over to try to talk to her. etc. A really good touch imo.
Is like when she offered him tea and he said no.. they say the opposite of what they mean due to their pride
@@ladymidnight80 I know! I just love the chemistry between them.
I guess she was too embarassed by the way she got caught on his territory after rejecting him to think of anything else!
@@nealm6764 The day he came to her in Mr.Collins house was not just an attempt at being social, he was meaning to propose but failed.

True. He was so persistent!
Yes, like he knew that she just said no because she felt so stupid about her own judgement of him. She was embarrassed and felt too awkward. That’s how I see it anyways

@@feliciarivera4297 before watching this movie, so, also reading the book obviously, i saw this clip and thought he was a horrible person and one of the typical, cliché man characters who do humiliating things of themselves (i do not find such behaviours to be normal or acceptable of men), yet, still are somehow adored by women; and hated him and this movie :)) yet, years after that initial impression, i watched it, and i am glad that i did it, because this is one, rare, innocent story, and also a movie, without anything uncomfortable plots or scenes between the two, loving characters...
Keira is great but, man, Matthew as Mr. Darcy killed it.
they are both great. Keira's uneasy, embarrassment, internal conflicts were so well portrayed here. she and matthew in this film as lizzy and darcy is 1 of the best thing ever in the history of motion picture.
Yes, I agree with you on 100pr
I definitely prefer Matthews protrayal more than Colins..... not sure why.
@@shaniadirstein3650it's a personal take. For the relatively fast pace of the movie, Matthew works flawlessly because it gives a rather perfect counterpart of Keira's stubborn, strong personality with him being rather awkward, shy and at times, a little bit dumb. Whereas Firth played absolutely perfect akin to the true duration of the events and portrays a more period accurate persona with his stoic, composed mannerisms but also his silent approach to love, his long lasting stare and his elaborated speeches which absolutely failed to convey emotions at first, but succeeded at last. Both of them did a great job, I don't choose one over the other just only because the story is perfect and I enjoy the series as much as the movie.
The acting in this movie was impeccable. You can tell, even if you have never watched the movie, that Mr. Darcy has been rejected by her and that he is very unsure of himself, but still cares for her. The way he looks at her when she is apologizing...Also that Elizabeth feels very guilty and confused. LOVE THIS SCENE

I first saw this movie on August 30th of this year... I refused to watch it for 12 years because I loved Colin Firth. So ironic considering I now prefer Matthew as Mr. Darcy. He's such a good actor and blew me completely away.
I think I watch the movie once a week! And it’s been like that for at least 4 years now! You make the math!😬😳😅

@@lizziedarcyforever7664 Ik Ik, that's very true, it's just a joke :)
The way he says "And are you having a pleasant trip?" always makes me laugh in the best and most endearing way possible. He's so awkward in his love for her, its just plain adorable how hard he's trying to remain composed. This scene is just one example of where Knightly and McFayden really nailed the chemistry between them; they're just exchanging pleasantries yet you can see everything so clearly in their body language and tone.
And as Mr. Darcy shared earlier its hard for him to initiate small talk, and we see that earlier when he tries to "practice" and fails miserably, fleeing quickly once Charlotte comes home. When theyre dancing Elizabeth even calls him taciturn. So him actually having a conversation, even if its asking if her trip is going well, shows he has improved and is actually trying. Its so cute.
Exactly. The mouth says one thing, the body language the second. I loved this meeting in the books and the BBC series, too. It is not easy to act this! The infatuation, the embarrassment, the surprise, the change of feelings on the both sides 👏👏👏
The actor playing Darcy does such a good job in this scene. You can see the "break" in his countenance from prior scenes; the stoniness is gone and he's reactive, some feelings are showing finally, he's solicitous of her feelings and her comfort in this situation. It's like the hurt of her rejection broke an emotional iceberg inside him and we can see the water starting to flow.
Excellent analysis
"the hurt of her rejection broke an emotional iceberg inside him"
let me print it and hang it on my wall
@@nanasshi0711 "and we can see the water starting to flow" 😂😍

Another thing that changes is his wardrobe.... prior to this scene he wears shirts that are stiff and collared right to the chin. And his hair is stiff. In this scene and the ones after his clothing is more relaxed and open and not so stiff, and his hair soft and blowing in the wind, protraying a change in him as well.
mr. Darcy's "may i see you back to the village", translates, "i am still very much in love with you, please give me another chance to show you how ardently i admire you."
_Ardently_
Most ardently.
e ele recebe mais um grande NÃO.
Love the way he says, "and are you having a pleasant trip?"
Yes! There's an ever-so-slight desperate sound to it.
This scene shows Lizzy's deep embarrassment at meeting Darcy. She couldn't quite look him straight in the face, lowering her head several times. And at the end of it all, she heaved a couple of sighs as she hurried away. Darcy, here, showed the lack of confidence, after being recently rejected by Lizzy. His hand did not show the same confidence as in the carriage scene when, after their first touch, his fingers were fully stretched.
I love it when they show his hand at the end again. It's like he remembers the feeling of having her hand in his :-) That it tingles, feels electric perhaps.
+Nicky De Decker Excellent interpretation. I wondered why his hand was shown. Thanks for that it makes the scene more enjoyable.

+Nicky De Decker well noticed
+Nicky De Decker Do you mean at the ball or when he helped her into the carriage? If I recall correctly, I think he held her hand with his right hand but in this frame they zoomed into his left hand :)

I love the way he looked at her.. he still madly in love with her.. however his lack of confidence after the proposal rejection it shows when he offered her to accompany her back to the hotel village and she said she's very fond of walking and he said yes... yes he know.. he knew how it hurt him so much after being rejected and he did not want to force her in any possible way.. he is very comprehensive kind of man.
Their both so awkward and uncomfortable and perfectly imperfect and fit so well together as characters. It's awesome.

God the longing in his face as he watch her. It's heartbreaking and i just want to comfort him! Great acting indeed
The effort he puts into small talk ♡ D'awwww!!!
The sadness in his eyes when he is talking to her kills me.
When he says "Tomorrow?", he's basically saying that he doesn't want her to leave.
This is my second favorite scene, the first proposal obviously being number one.
Does anyone else notice that Darcy take the steps like 5 at a time?
Love this scene!!
Matthew MacFadyen is VERY tall.

They both should have Oscars for their roles. This movie is masterpiece.
Totally agree! The Music Score, Director, Costumes, Supporting Actors as Well. Cannot be beat. A Classic.

That strut tho.
The way she immediately struts after he calls out to her when she was running is the best thing ever
sandy cheeks like “oh I wasn’t running” lol
When she grabbed the railing for support and sighed as she went down the stairs I felt all of her embarrassment and how hurt her pride was at seeing him, also her new found feelings for him were already confusing her and just seeing him now was such a blow. What a great actress.
yeah, keira 's microexpression were brilliant across the movie, particularly in this scene. such a wonderful talent
oh the awkward time when u r in the AMAZING house of the man whose proposal u rejected
The casting for this amazing movie was amazing!!
His expression at 1:18 is just brilliant bc he doesn't have a line but he's so clearly YEARNING in her direction, and he's trying to practice conversing w her at the same time
Its a wonderful interpretation of the script by Matthew bc he's acting the hell out of his lines (nonverbal "lines" too)
The awkwardness of both...on the surface so polite...but within their hearts...deeply drawn to one another. it is a beautiful scene
The beautiful shot they took of him walking from 0:34 to 0:40 is just *so* hot. His dress robes fluttering, the sound of those gorgeous boots, that hair *sigh*
I love this male character so so much, specially with Matthew McFadyen playing it!
Are you alright
Yashasvi u r exactly right. I wish Joe Wright make more romantic movies with these two. Their chemistry is awesome
SAME. He's the perfect Mr. Darcy and the perfect man.
I dont understand why people prefer colin firth. Matthew Mcfayden is definitely the perfect Mr Darcy!!!
Juliette Rogasik oh, really I dont mind Colin Firth but after watching this, Matthew was the best choice. He's so dreamy and sexy and perfect as Mr. Darcy
My fave scene in the movie. I don't care if some people say Colin Firth was a better Darcy. Matthew's Darcy shows us the love, confusion, & longing for Lizzie. The way he looks at her shows the pain of trying to hold back the urge to hold her and keep her there with him. Colin's Darcy was too indifferent. Feels like he is reading a book when he expresses his love for Lizzie.
The look in his eyes and the softness of his tone when he asks Elizabeth..."And are you having a pleasant trip?" always moves my heart.
These two have such amazing chemistry as Elizabeth & Darcy & yet when they played brother & sister in Anna Karenina, I found them equally convincing. That's real acting talent.
Why
Dutch plan van der linde, don't you know that there is a substantial difference between two lovers and brother and sister? There in love in both relations, but to convey the difference with eyes, voice and body- language affords great acting indeed.
Elizabeth and Darcy are so cute in this scene. They look so awdward. Elizabeth only want to hide under a rock, and Darcy is swooning over her presence and tryng to make her feel better
They are so in love it's obvious.
MacFayden has this special way of showing emotion in his eyes. This "gaaaaaah..." expression he has the whole time while talking to her is cute and passionate at the same time. Love it. Makes your limbs melt xD
He wanted to walk with you, Elizabeth. 😩❤
When you are a man as rich as Mr Darcy, it's very hard to find a woman who is genuinely interested in you without accounting for your wealth
Darcy chose this woman because she was least interested in money or status. Something very hard during that era
I would have tried to blend in with the statues and prayed to God that he doesn't see me.
LOL!
Sighs in black
😁😁😁
The day they got engaged, Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy talked about this incident in the book:
Elizabeth: “I am almost afraid of asking what you thought of me, when we met at Pemberley. You blamed me for coming?”
Darcy: “No indeed; I felt nothing but surprise.”
Elizabeth: “Your surprise could not be greater than mine in being noticed by you. My conscience told me that I deserved no extraordinary politeness, and I confess that I did not expect to receive more than my due.”
“My object then,” replied Darcy, “was to show you, by every civility in my power, that I was not so mean as to resent the past; and I hoped to obtain your forgiveness, to lessen your ill opinion, by letting you see that your reproofs had been attended to. How soon any other wishes introduced themselves I can hardly tell, but I believe in about half an hour after I had seen you.”
He then told her of Georgiana’s delight in her acquaintance, and of her disappointment at its sudden interruption....
Most awkward scene ever but I just cant stop analysing their every movement and facial expression.
I guess I do the same because we're just so dumbfounded by the brilliant acting, that every look, every glance, every gaze, expression, gesture, word means something or the other, even if it is not a gesture of love.
I'm in love with Darcy. I really am

I never thought a movie version could outdo the BBC version from way back with Colin Firth and this one just so surprised me. It’s my favorite version. The chemistry between these two are just amazing and crackles onscreen every time 👏🏻
There’s something about Matthews voice that’s really soft and comforting and warm And dreamy
a man when dealing with a woman he loves so much usually will be awkward and don't know what to say ... Mr. Darcy is a shy person to express his love for Elizabeth, but what he does for Jane and Lydia is very romantic and touches Elizabeth's heart
The way he studies her face the whole time. The pain in his eyes, when he tries to make a simple conversation
I really really love the way Mr Darcy looks at Lizzy now that he fell in love with her. His eyes are so fond and warm.. very different than the beginning of the movie :)
I NEED my own Mr. Darcy ASAP!!!>.< just watching the way he looks at her makes my heart melt every damn time!

“- He could put ‘you’ at the end of that, and say ‘I know you.’ The idea that these two people know each other, knew each other when they first saw each other. That they recognized each other from their future.” Pride and Prejudice dir. Joe Wright.
This movie is a gift
When he says "Yes, yes I know."
what he's really saying is "I know you, I know who you are..." (most ardently)
Elizabeth: Tomorrow we go to Matlock.
Darcy: Tomorrow?
A few hours later, Darcy delays Lizzie's departure by inviting her aunt and uncle to dine in his estate. 😂😂
Ikr. 😂😂😂 just for her.
And little do her aunt and uncle know that by taking their niece with them to Darbyshire they won’t need to stay in the Rose & Crown in Lambton ever again ☺️
The way he looks at her so helplessly at the end, when she walks away. It's like he was about to say something to her but just couldn't. Also I love his coat or whatever. So stylish
I don't know why, but I love the way in which they see to eachother. It's so unexpected! That moment is one of my favourite parts in the film.
This scene would be nothing without the palpable chemistry between keira and matthew. The dialogue of this scene is not romantic in the slightest but paired with these two's chemistry, ugh its so beautiful to watch
true, it's frigthtening if you analyze their acting by frame rate, how much details went into it, so much depth to their acting.
I love pride and prejudice. It's so hilarious and yet all the humor doesn't seem forced at all. Simply brilliant.

I just discovered this movie and I've watched it 9 times in the last three days. It's perfect in every way. Keira and Matthew are phenomenal--they ARE Lizzy and Darcy.
2018 and still watching
Love this Movie so much that I could not tell you as to how many times that I've watched it! I have seen other versions of Pride & Prejudice >Darcy & Elizabeth.... But NONE Even Come Close to these two!
Watch the Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle 1995 version, and I promise you you will see the story and never ask for a better two leading actors. It is better than reading the book; Mr.Collins the empty headed Pastor is perfectly played and written.
This movie is just fluff and re-written to sound like a Pretty Woman = Harlequin Romance novel set in 1812. Just like all the other silly attempts to write like Jane Austin's character to the writer's image...it fails horribly.
You are not a true Austen fan until you watch the 1995 version.
Only casting mistakes were with Mrs Bennet & Jane Bennet both women were suppose to be more attractive than casted.but their acting excuses this error.
I have watched that one, & maybe because I wasnt impressed with Collin Firth is the reason why I really didnt like it.. But I AM A TRUE AUSTEN Fan... Love the Story She Wrote! if it wasnt for her writing this story I would have never loved the film! But as for to which Representation is the best.. To Each his/her Own!
***** I love the novel of course, but absolutely detest the 1995 mini series. It's so bland and while I agree that it captures the book really well, I don't like movies that try to completely reproduce the source material. This movie gives me the same kind of feelings that the book did, and I consider myself a big Jane Austen fan. I've read all her work and have seen all film productions. Still, this movie remains the one of the only ones I watch frequently (Northanger Abbey 2007 and the Emma mini series being the other two)
Esther Ingram OMG Emma mini series is so good too, it is my favourite alongside this. THIS is the ultimate winner ;)
***** I've watched that version (*edit:* the 1995 version), and it's *terrible*, imo. There's no youthful exuberance in Elizabeth (and how can there be, when the cast itself is at least a decade older than they should've been?). She's infinitely whiny, and not remotely believable when she suddenly turns to "loving" Darcy. There's no chemistry between them, and it seems seeing Pemberley changed her mind more than anything else.
It seems to me that, had Colin Firth not been cast, the whole series would've been forgotten at this point; the only way it's ever mentioned is in conjunction with Firth. (As for Mrs. Bennet, that '95 performance was *painful* to listen to, she shrieked every line. Awful.)
To each his own, to be sure. I just think this one (*edit:* the 2005 film) is well-researched and captures the spirit of the two *young* lovers quite well, making it quite believable.
This scene has a very crucial role in the film..when she visits Darcy's mansion and goes through the sculpture of Darcy and admires it like it's a heaven that moment Lizzie fell for Darcy deeply !
I swear I can actually feel their hearts pounding out of their chests in this scene!!! Phenomenal acting 👏🏻
Anyone laugh out loud at the zoom in on Lizzie’s face when she’s noticed by Darcy? It really nails the quick panic she would feel, but it feels like something out of the Office.
okay but imagine you confess your love to a girl, and she turns you down BRUTALLY, like, destroyed, and you're like 'damn I kinda deserved that' so you try your best to move on, and then one day you come home and she's just IN YOUR HOUSE, like wtf
I really don't think he tried to 'move on'.
She didn't turn him down brutally. He was very sure and conceited at the first proposal. And he offended her.
Dec. 2019 and there are 4.66 million views of this clip alone!!! I'd say there are MANY, MANY fans of P&P 2005 still around!!!! And we LOVE this movie, MOST ARDENTLY!!!! :)
It’s 2021 and i’m still in love with Mr. Darcy
LOOOVE that final shot when it goes from her walking down the stairs to his hand!
Gosh! That longing in his eyes melts my heart 😍
they zoom in on her eyes and all I can think of is the typical animal planet zoom shot and the "FIGHT OR FLIGHT FIGHT OR FLIGHT" screaming in the background omfg
Shelby Eaton this made me cackle hard. Ded ahaha :’ )
One of my fave scenes! The feelings are so genuine. Darcy's face is everything!
i'm 21 years old, i've had this move for more than 5 years now, still watch it at least once a month and still cant get enough of their love story. first romantic movie that i did not find corny or boring. 😚😘
I think you have very good taste for one so young!!! lol. In my opinion.
I love mr Darcy,s voice when he says miss Elizabeth ( awww)
He is not a small talk kinda guy.
But he tries. Just for her.
Ahhh Mr. Darcy💘
I love how they're both awkwardly holding their hands in the beginning 🥺
When do they hold hands?
@@shreyaroka1551 They don't hold each others hands, but they grip their own hands, because they don't know where to put them.
Aw. I love the hug at the beginning. I love the protective brother chemistry. Lizzie and Darcy are phenomenal as usual, but SO MUCH SIBLING LOVE!
I dont know why but I watch this scene more than 20 times, and yeah i know this isnt a romantic scene but just look the way he looks at Lizzie,is just magical and cute.❤
OMG when he looks his eyes are filled with love
"May I see you back to the village" and "yes, yes I know" show that Mr. Darcy was ready to walk with Elizabeth only if she agreed.. how beautiful
I am very fond of walking.
Yes. I know.
Mr Darcy noticed everything about her❤
I have a copy of this movie on my phone, usb, and laptop. The only reason why searched for this scene is to check the comments. And as I thought, I am not the only one who adores this scene.
Same here...
