LS Swap DONOR TEARDOWN - What PARTS do you NEED? - UTX
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 5 фев 2025
- Today at Ugly Truck, we're answering another frequently asked question: "What parts do I need for an LS swap? What parts can I get from a salvage yard?" We're tearing down this 2004 Chevy Tahoe, and salvaging all the pieces and parts we can from it. Here's a list of what we kept:
ENGINE - Obviously! This engine has a ton of miles and is missing a couple freeze plugs, so it will go to the machine shop to determine if any of it is savable.
TRANSMISSION - This is a 4wd 4L60E, which we don't need. It will also need to be rebuilt due to mileage, so we'll convert it to 2wd then. Stay tuned for that video!
TRANSMISSION COOLER LINES - We reuse both ends of the transmission oil cooler lines, both at the trans and the radiator.
WIRING HARNESS - We'll need the main harness running from the fuse box to the PCM to the engine and back to the O2 sensors, as well as a few other pieces and connectors.
UNDERHOOD FUSE BOX - We'll need the main fuse panel, as well as its base, cover, and lid.
PCM - Another obvious one! Plus, the PCM cover, mount, and bracket. And make sure not to loose the rubber seals in the connectors!
MAF SENSOR/AIR INTAKE BOX - Whether you plan to use the stock air filter box or not, you'll need the MAF sensor. We also like to keep the intake tube bellow and clamps in case we need them.
DBW ACCELERATOR PEDAL/HARNESS/CONTROLLER - We'll definitely need the accelerator pedal and the ETC module on the firewall, and the harness that runs between.
RADIATOR/HOSES - This radiator is trash, and we won't reuse these hoses, but they still work great for mock up. Plus, Jerry has a thing for spring clamps.
DEGAS BOTTLE/COOLANT BOTTLE - We'll be installing brand new bottles on our next swaps, but this one is pretty clean and could definitely be reused.
POWER STEERING/ALTERNATOR BRACKET - We won't reuse this one, but we'll keep it around as a spare for one of our personal trucks. If your donor has hydroboost, hang on the the return line. We'll use it to adapt the original power steering gearbox to the LS pump.
POWER STEERING/TRANS/OIL COOLERS - These are optional for a swap, but we'll be installing them on our 6.0 swaps coming up.
AIR CONDITIONING - We'll reuse both the high and low side switches, and we'll need the interior controls to tie the AC into the PCM engine controls.
EXHAUST PIPES/O2 SENSORS - We like to leave the front O2 senors and unbolt the flange at the manifold, and cut the pipe just in front of the catalytic converter, so that we have plenty to weld to on the new exhaust system. On these swaps, we won't be using the rear O2 sensors.
BATTERY BOX - You'll need the battery tray if you decide to keep the battery in the original location. Plus, the trays can be cut into brackets if needed!
ENGINE COVER - The most obvious!
VARIOUS FITTINGS/CONNECTORS/CLAMPS - When in doubt, keep it! You never know what might come in handy.

Thanks for time and effort you two put on these videos appreciate it
Thanks Baldo. We appreciate you watching. Jerry and Emily
Very cool, would love to see how a modern 4x4 engine, trans and transfer case go into an old rig... Great work!!
That would be an interesting one. I have a k10 4x4 that we did years ago. It was a challenge. We will put that on our list. Thanks for watching.
You do an excellent job of teaching. I'm having my 15yo watch these videos. I just ran across your vids yesterday and I'm a tough customer been doing this stuff for many many years but I believe you teach better than I do. So keep it up, thank you for sharing your knowledge and wisdom. I will help support your efforts.
Thanks Ron. We appreciate you watching. Being a good teacher is a great compliment. It would be great if the kids of today would get an interest for this type of work. It can be a great way to make a living and also a great hobby. Thanks again. Jerry
You guys are super organized! I just found your channel and watched this episode, going to watching a lot more thank you!
Thanks Wade! We appreciate you tuning in! 👍
This is the best tutorial video I've ever seen on this topic. I watched every minute!
Thanks so much, Bonkers! We appreciate you tuning in! --Emily and Jerry
You have an amazing father i just want you to know that i am very jealous but with a big smile as he talks u and us thru the whole process
Thanks Hamlet! Jerry is actually my husband, but I'm very lucky to have someone who takes the time to help me learn. We appreciate you tuning in! --Emily
"Kay" ... "Sweet" ... "Kay"... "Sweet"... The Sweet Ugly Truck symphony of speed, efficiency and economy. Thanks for sharing folks...Kay?
🤣🤣 I'm the only other person there, and it feels weird not to answer Jerry when he explains stuff. Maybe the dogs will learn to chime in once in a while... 🤣 Thanks for watching!
Brings back memories my wife and I doing this just last year! I could not walk after we did this. I did not see you unplug the tranny neutral safety bundle near the shifter. Your viewers may need a heat gun or hair dryer to loosen the factory glue and when installing the plugs again. Great video. Wish I used a lift. We removed the cross members and the rad support and pulled it out a a complete unit.
We've pulled them as a complete unit, but we knew this engine and trans would both need rebuilt, so we went ahead and separated them. That's a great point about the neutral safety connector! This one had a different style connector without glue, but we should have warned folks about that one. That's not a connector you want to break! Thanks Scott! We'll definitely acknowledge that in an upcoming video! 👍👍
Im in the middle of taking out an engine 6.0 from my brother denali for our ls swap into our 1985 gmc c1500. But maam for you to pick up that alternator/ ps bracket cudossssssssss 💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾. Keep up the amazing work Love you guys
Thanks Terrell. Keep us posted on your swap. Your going to enjoy that 6.0. Jerry and Emily
Seems like the water pump was installed by an amateur and later filled with water. The water froze and the plug popped. This is a guess but telling from the rust stains on the radiator and in the holes for the water pump. Also water only coming from the reservoir is also an indicator coolant wasn't used. Thanks for another great video.
This truck definitely had a rough life! Fortunately, we just bought it for the DBW intake and harness, so it wasn't a huge loss. We're not holding out a lot of hope for the heads, but the block and crank may clean up, so you might see it again someday. Thanks for watching, Rowdy! Jerry and Emily
Thanks!
Wow! Thank you so much! We appreciate your support! 👋👋
Love watching Jerry do the junk yard grill and radiator support de-install. Waste no time on the small stuff. 🤣🤣 would love to see the engine tear down on that one. I bet it's a classic, " I don't change oil, I just add more when it's low" kinda thing. Would love to see the inside of that gem. Look forward to more content with ya'll takin them down and puttin em back together. This is entertainment!
Thanks Randy! Jerry took the heads off of this engine, and it is sooo unbelievably gross. 😂 Maybe we'll do a quick video on that one of these days...🤔
Really enjoying the videos... If it's doable and not a ton of trouble....would love some notes time to time regarding the various tools used... for example those cutters, and on the dual fuel tank video... the crimp tool used. Good stuff here... for sure.
That's a great suggestion! We'll be sure to discuss more of the tools we use as we go. Both the cutters and the crimp tool are for PEX plumbing, and you can get them at any Lowe's, Menards, etc. 👍👍 Thanks for watching!
@@UglyTruckExperience Ahhh I kinda thought so.. I like it even better when tools are used between trades!
I put 350 95 too 02 vortex. In my 80 . All u need is buy air entake and if TBI distributor set up u need apter . And u can u use stock distributor either or whatever u need.
Loved it, very excited for the transmission conversion. Still fun to see that engine tore down so you can explain what's salvageable
I have already taken the heads off of that motor and expected to see cracked heads even without having them cleaned but they look ok. The cylinders have no sign of wear. Maybe I should tear this one down on a video just to show how tough they are. This one was definitely hot and still looks pretty good inside. Aside from the sludge..
How high were the miles? Over 300k?
I think it was around 260k, which is enough that we would want to rebuild it before dropping into a customer's vehicle. I wouldn't be surprised if the block could be honed and the lower end salvaged.
Great video. I loved it thank you. You two are awesome. Keep up the good work.
Thanks so much! We appreciate you watching our stuff! --Emily and Jerry
Dang looks like you have done a few. Man there are some parts there I would love to have.
Thank You for Your help and ideas.
Hi I was delivering items from Walmart today and stumbled on You folks!! I asked Your Mrs if Yiu guys could do an ls swap on a 2016 Dodge Journey and if you could do an ls swap or LT Swap on a 1999 Lexus sec my son's car.
It was great to meet you, Matthew!
Thank you for all the info. It is helping me with my first ls swap
Thanks Floyd! Glad to hear the videos are helpful! We appreciate you tuning in!
Be sure and do a video on changing the trans from 4wd to 2wd cause I’m having a hard time finding a 2wd around here thanks for the videos great work and very detailed!!!
Most definitely! 😎 We appreciate you watching!
Q
I've been harvesting LS lately with my bro and when we pay for a "complete engine" we get all of the pig but the squeal. We even save AC compressors if the system looks freshly emptied. We get the full harness and drive by wire pedals when so fitted since it doesn't cost extra. I already had a towable engine run stand we're equipping with a simple standalone harness made from donor wiring and will remove ATS so each computer we harvest with the engine or drivetrain is usable by us or future buyers. The computer fun will be easy for anyone who knows how to flash firmware on anything else and there is plenty of software available...one way or another.
We cut the frame rails after unbolting (we don't trash good sheet metal because that's rude) or cutting off the fenders and core support etc. We unbolt the steering column slip joint then recip saw the frame rails so the drivetrain rolls forward hanging off the torsion bars (no torches permitted or I'd have snipped those in a minute). Vans don't have torsion bars and that's a good thing when cutting off the front frame since it's even easier.
www.amazon.com/Diable-Reciprocating-Blades-Cutting-Dismantling/dp/B07DNJN4PK kick so much ass we often make all our frame, line and sheet metal cuts using only one blade. Our local salvage yard issues them to their guys.
Run harvested seat belts or get fancy with your own sling beneath the exhaust manifolds and the salvage yard forklift pops the complete drivetrain out with no fuss. Those coolant bottles get brittle so unless they feel flexible we leave them. Check out the dual electric fans on some trucks and SUVs because they're much nicer than a waterpump mounted unit and usually dirt cheap.
Sounds like you have a pretty good system going there. Thanks for your comments. We appreciate it.
always appreciate all the detail in your videos, thanks!
Thanks! We appreciate you watching! 👍👍
I love how evertime you throw a bolt to the bucket it gos right in and same with the trash can it makes me laugh

Thank you Ishnikko. We appreciate it. Jerry and Emily
Back watching this for a third time.
Third time's the charm! 😉😁 Thanks Shady!
Awesome video! What’s the best and simplest ls donor vehicle. I have a buddy telling me it’s a 1999-2002. But so many people doing 04’s it seems. I don’t want to deal with dod or vvt. Just a cam some springs and drop it in. I’m currently trying to get a 6.0 with a 4l80 out of a 2500 or 3500 from 1999-2002 is this the right choice? Thanks for all the great info!
Hey Charger! Yes, the 99-02 do have some advantages over the later years if you want to incorporate other things into the donor fuse box, like headlights, horn, etc. Most had mechanical cooling fans, but the PCM can be programmed to run factory electric fans if you want. The AC wiring is simpler also. That being said, parts like the TAC module and DBW pedals for 99-02 are getting expensive and hard to come by. In the long run, a 03-06 donor might work out cheaper and easier if you figure in replacement parts later on. But there is nothing wrong with any of them, and you shouldn't run into VVT or DOD until 2007 or so. Also, just our opinion... if you're going for simplicity, stick with a stock cam. They make plenty of HP and run much better with way fewer complications. Hope this helps, and best of luck with your swap! We appreciate you watching our stuff! --Jerry and Emily
@@UglyTruckExperience thanks so much for the great info!
Very helpful man! I thank you very much.
You're very welcome! Thanks for watching!
What happen to the white donor parts?? I like the grille
The grill ended up in the dumpster. It was pretty rough.
@24:45 in the video you said the purple one with the green tape is important. What is it for?
That plug is where I get to the data connector leading to pcm. Also the Vss wire, and a couple wires that I need for cruise.
Great video thank you, keep up the good work 🙌🏾
Thanks Fernando! We appreciate you watching!
Best reason to buy a donor reason is to part out what you don’t need so that your swap parts are free… heck, you should even come out money ahead…
Yep! If you have the time to part it out, that's definitely the way to go! Thanks for tuning in. 👍 --Emily and Jerry
do you guys use the secondary transmission cooler or is not not necessarily needed for a swap
Hi Terry! It depends on what the truck will be used for. The trans cooler in the LS radiator is enough for a daily driver. If you're in a hot climate or plan to tow anything with the truck, we'll add a second trans cooler. Thanks for tuning in! --Emily and Jerry
Great video.
Thank you! We appreciate you watching!
Hi guys, Luv your channel and just subscribed. ..... LS9, LSA, LSB, LSC, LSG ???
QUESTION: .... I have a 2012 1500 8 passenger, (5.3 ltr) , (RWD), Express van I ordered new 11 years ago and am trying to identify what series of LS engine and transmission it is. I don't think it is an Aluminum block or with DoD but unsure. How can I tell please. Will the vin decoded tell me all this? Or a specific web site to tell me these things? Thanks much for any help, Bob R.
If your 8th digit in your vin number is a 4. You have a LMF, iron block 5.3. Pretty good motor. Thanks Jerry
From what I see the only option for transmission was 4l60e.
You’re fast !
I wish we were this fast in real life! 😂 Thanks for watching!
I'm following you'all
Don't follow too close... We don't use turn signals. 🤣🤣 Thanks for watching!
What's the wiring for that you removed from under the truck on the passenger side?
Hello Rodney. This is one of my favorite videos to watch. I have a blast when I tear down a doner. I will have to sit down and watch this video and get back to you. Most of the wires on the passenger side are related to the AC, O2 sensor's, coolant level sensor and also the MAF which is pretty important. If I am not sure what it goes to, I just keep it intact and sort it out later. Thanks for watching and commenting. Jerry
@UglyTruckExperience I have watched this video like 6 times myself. GREAT CONTENT!!! I recently pulled a harness out and took all the AC connections, o2 sensors but I saw you removed the wire harness all the way back to looked like under the passanger seat and I just want to make sure I didn't miss anything ?
Sounds like you did alright. The wires on the right hand side that run along the frame are the O2 sensor wires and that is where that engine harness ends. I have not done any that used the second sensor, so that last two feet ends up getting snipped off. There is the connector that runs down the driver side and ends up plugging into the transmission and the speed sensor on the right side. That would be all of them. Let us know what your working on. Would love to hear about it. Thanks. Jerry
Thank you for the follow-up. Sounds like I got everything I need for my 73 Blazer swap. Keep up the awesome content, and GOD bless.
A air chisle makes easy work of that fan
Thanks Richard. That does work nicely. I should have mentioned that. We appreciate you watching. Jerry and Emily
Do you have a link for the wire cutters you used?
Hi Chris! Here's a link to the big cutters we used. I don't think these are the same as in this video, but we've had this one for a while and it's been great. Thanks for tuning in! amzn.to/49PO9x1
Where do you send your computers to get flashed I am about to do a 2000 6.0 into my 94 I unplugged bcm to deactivate security but code is still in there would like to not have to worry about erasing it and then. Not starting again lol
Thanks for watching! We send our PCM's to LT1swap.com for programming. Check out this video for all the info you need to have it programmed! ruclips.net/video/otPF2laSGwc/видео.html
Will the engine and transmission come out at the same time, or do you need to take them out separately? Thanks!
We do take them out together sometimes, but when we do we take the front differential out first. On this one, we knew both engine and trans would need to be rebuilt, so we pulled them separately. Thanks for watching!
@@UglyTruckExperience Thanks so much for doing the videos. I have a 1965 c10, and I want to do a LS swap. I have no prior experience, but I am learning a lot from you guys!
That's awesome! It's definitely worth the work in the end!
So glad I found these, but the unsteadiness of the camera work makes them harder to watch. A tripod would make these videos top notch.
Thanks for your comment! We'll keep that in mind. Thanks for watching!

@@UglyTruckExperience I wish you lived near me, I'd be thrilled for you to do my LS swap
how about a LS video show which flywheels fit 5.3, clutch pressure plates, clutch disc's fit pressure plate and fit different tranny input shafts, pilot bearing or bushing , and hydraulic throwout bearing or mechanical assy and clutchfork and throwout bearing...my biggest issue is 4.8 flywheel fits 5.3, but finding proper disc size matching pressure plate and flywheel surface size and input tranny spline count is not a OEM part... tho i have found a $900 flywheel that does solve all these issues....hoping your experience n maybe subscribers experience have tackled these parts and help to locate matching parts coordination without compromising efficiency or quality of performance ...dont need highend racing parts, a high quality oem equivalent without breaking budgeted LS project....your clutch woes video didn't cover all my needs...plez point me in right direction ...thanx
So far I have not had the opportunity to do a standard transmission with one of our ls swaps. I do know that it is not as simple as a person would want it to be. The times that I looked into it, it almost looked easier to go with a later model transmission bellhousing and clutch. If its 4x4 that adds another problem. If somebody out there is reading this comment and has some info that would be great. Thanks Jerry
@@UglyTruckExperience well its a short hop, skip n jump, to springfield. id be willing to bow down to a very inquisitive gentleman such as yourself. and tackle next swap into '70 SS el camino, that is if budget doesnt get outta control.
I like how those battery powered tools cause ya air compressor to kick on. Lol
🤣 One of these days we'll move that compressor so we don't have to listen to it. Thanks for watching!
@@UglyTruckExperience aah it’s alright don’t bother me lol, I just thought it was funny he was running the battery powered tool an the air compressor was running
Brother, that screw driver is toooo short. I think if you get a longer one you could take off the intake hose from the truck next door. Roflmfao!!!! Wow that thing is long!!!!.
I give him a hard time about it all the time, but Jerry LOVES that screwdriver! 🤣🤣
Yep.
use a rachet and tighten the belt tensioner to help get the fan off easier
That would hold the belt tighter, but Jerry only has 2 hands, and if I held the ratchet, my head would be exactly where he's swinging the hammer. 🤣🤣 There are lots of little tricks like that that make things easier, though! Thanks for watching!
@@UglyTruckExperience i did it myself, lol, but thanks for the videos, you guys are awesome
FYI my 02 Silverado does not have EGR.
There are exceptions here and there. It's always best to check your donor or ask the salvage yard to be sure. Thanks for watching!
Dang looks like no maintenance was done on that roach.
It had a rough life for sure. Jerry
I hope you get paid well for doing that because it looks like it’s a big pain in the ass to me but I still love the content and of you two and your two pups.
It is a ton of work but the end result is worth it. Thanks Geebop.
How much its the labor? For swap
The labor on the last one that went out was around 7500.00 for everything. They all vary a bit though. Thanks
@@UglyTruckExperience @ thats all parts included?
That"s just labor.
How much did y’all pay for the donor truck?
We paid 500.00 for that one thinking the engine will need rebuilt. Thanks.. Jerry
Why not just push the wire harness inside the rubber grommet very easy
I think you are probably referring to the wire harness that is leading into the cab. That bundle of wires that lead into the cab do not get used in the swap and it is just easier to cut it off and move to the next thing. Thanks for watching. Jerry
I'd like to offer to pay for couples counseling for Ripley and Juice. 🤣
You would either run out of money paying for it or the counselor would resign. They absolutely need something though.
What's the average cost to your customers to do a swap like this?
Hello Walter. The last job that went out the door ran 13,500. They are all a little different of course. That was a 100,000 mile motor and I rebuilt the transmission. Labor and materials.
I have 4 L 80.trans for sale had 65000 miles on it came from a van 95 to 02. All I needed was the 350 vortex I'm in Burlington Wisconsin so let me know
And get your daughter in the picture more, she cute😊

I couldn't figure that one out. I had honestly had never seen that big of a mess on those engines. F is right. Jerry
I love the videos I am addicted to all of them..... Just wondering what the chances of you breaking down on "The White board" the blocks inside the fuse box and what is needed in each one to complete the swap.... I'm working on a 1975 Caprice but it's pretty much all the same as the square bodies..... All your wisdom is much appreciated, you give me confidence to do this swap I was so hesitant until your vids
Thanks Matthew, by blocks in the fuse box are you asking about the relays? When I use the OEM fuse box from the donor I pretty much leave everything in the block until I am finished with the swap. Once done and everything is working I go through and pull the relays and fuses out that are not used. We are going to be doing a bunch of wiring videos and will make sure we address that. If you are asking something else, please let us know. Thanks Again
@@UglyTruckExperience i apologize I meant the circuits that plug in on the underside of the fuse box, those extra harnesses you hung on to and said this is every possible harness you could need ( what exactly is needed out of those extra harness/plugs ) any input is greatly appreciated thank you in advance

hi got it late today
Hi Alonso! I was late posting the video today! We had some technical difficulties... 😬
If I am not using the transmission out of my swap do I need to disconnect the drive shafts the transfer case and remove the transmission in order to pull the motor, I know I need the wire harness to go to my 2wd drive 4l60e but just wondering if I can skip those steps and just pull the motor and how I would do so without pulling the transmission, thank you in advance for any input, as always your videos are the best and most informative on RUclips.... Thank you for posting everything you do
Thanks Matthew. That motor will come right out with that front differential removed. I just unbolt them from the frame sometimes and let them just hang if I'm not trying to save the axles and diff. Taking the intake off will make it go much easier also, giving you access to the upper bell housing bolts and grounds on the back. Let us know how it goes. Thanks
@@UglyTruckExperience how do I use the factory harness for the 4x4 4l60 and transfer case if I'm not using the transfer case and running a 2wf 4l60… and also do you mean the front drive shaft not the front diff.....I didn't see in the video where you removed the front differential in order to pull the motor, thank you for your reply and you input, as always greatly appreciated
The wiring harness for a 4l60 4x4 and a 2wd 4l60 Is exactly the same. The wiring that goes to the transfer case for the 4x4 is a separate harness that comes over to it from the frame. If I have the intake removed from the ls , most of them will come out without removing the front differential. I do remove the front drive shaft just to give me a little extra room to work. What is your donor vehicle?
@@UglyTruckExperience donor vehicle is a 2004 Yukon.... Transplant is a 1975 Caprice convertible
