In the early 80s I loved hearing the Black Knight's taunts. Thirty years later, in 2010, I finally was able to purchase my own. I've never grown tired of playing it or hearing the Black Knight's voice. Awesome machine.
In the arcade of my hometown... this machine was down all the time... not ejecting... upper flippers stopped working... drop targets getting stuck. The owner replaced it with Pharaoh because of too many issues. Really liked this one too! Brings back so many memories. Love this channel!
Used to play this machine at my local "Arcade Alley" until closing every weekend night during the 80's. I almost needed an intervention to break away! I SO wish I had your techy know-how, otherwise I'd buy one & restore it myself. Thanks for bringing it all back for me!
Great video on repair and playing the machine. Years ago when I was in college at upstate NY. I got a job as a pinball machine mechanic for a small local business. We got the contract to supply all the pinball fussball games and the old time cigarette machines. Watching these videos bring back a lot of very fond memories. Iwe had the Bally's and the Williams machines back then so they were all eletro-mechanal. Learned a lot about wiring and rouble shooting which helped me out later in life. Keep up the great videos and keeping the old machine's alive and well. Steve Greene
Great series Ronnie, From not working to working man great job, I am always impressed by your wiring schematic reading. I agree with your comment section at the end of you playing the Black Knight. Ronnie fixed my Gorgar with the speech problem and some switch issues and 70 percent of the comments were about the Backglass. Last time I checked you do not play on the backglass "come on people come on". Great job Ronnie on fixing the Black Knight, I am sure the customer will enjoy it for a long time.
Thank you Frank you see how it is, I think people mean well but it's like you're walking down the street and somebody jumps out from behind a building and says your baby is ugly. What? haha. Thanks for watching as always man!
Ahhh, to be all the way in the low light back arcade room of a Straw Hat Pizza. You know the kind with the arched red brick walls in the B-Day party room, that aroma of real pizzas, stale beer and cigarette smoke scented carpeting and the sound of pinball machines. I miss the 70s and 80s.
I loved watching you repair the Black Knight!! I learned to play pinball on that machine and would play for hours on Saturday afternoons after bowling league. I saw it in the background as you were fixing the Defender and immediately went looking for the video for the Black Knight. I was disappointed when I couldn't find a similar video for the Black Knight but was excited to find the first one a week or so later. Watching you play at the end brought back memories.-pizzadoug
Found your channel accidentally while browsing for a crane manual! LUCKY SHOOT! Thank you for your videos! Awesome fixes! Awesome material! AWESOME MOOD! Keep it up! Thumbs up, subscribed.
Love that machine! That and firepower! Both of those machines were harder to get multiball than newer machines. I can remember as a kid playing pac man when it was brand new. Black night was brand new too. You couldn't get near either machine . They were always occupied . I can just hear black night talking, along with firepower, and I think eight ball pinball would be saying "quit talking and start chalking". I miss my youth!!
In the 80's I used to get 30 minutes for lunch each day, once every two weeks I got 1 hour. That day, I would go straight to the local pinball arcade ("Pinnies" here in Australia). Firepower every time man!
I own a Black Knight and I love playing it. I first played one in 1980 at a Godfathers pizza here in Louisville Ky. It was so amazing to be able to play a pinball machine that talked. I fed many a quarter into that machine. 40 years later I found one and just had to have it. I don’t plan on ever selling it.
I have own a Black Knight for about 25 years When i got for my two girls for Xmas, pick it up and was not told that two of the connectors were the same and that they could be connected the wrong way. I connected them and smoked the boards. I repair everything. Thanks to your videos. Just came up with a new problem (lost the speech) again thanks to your videos I am going to tackle that problem.
I have a black knight sitting in my family room 😁 Just bought it back from a guy I sold it to about 11 years ago. Still in amazing shape. This is one of those games I loved to hate back in the day. Very challenging to complete in a 3 ball setup. And that antagonism from the Black Knight... 🤣
I remember being a young fella playing this game in the wild at the Red Deer College student's lounge. So many amazing sounds and it had speech!! They also had a SiniStar with speech which of course blew my Atari 2600 playing mind! ;)
I think I forgot to use magnasave about 3 times more than I used it and about half those times, I remembered too late. LOL. I enjoyed this series Ron, great work as usual.

I bet I dropped $100 into Black Knight over a couple years. At our local Pinball Arcade there was always a line of quarters on the machine. That and Haunted House with the "basement" level. Great stuff here. Lots of work on this, and great debugging techniques.
Oh that basement level had some depth to it. Had the clear glass at on the main level, then a large cobweb and then finally the basement playfield. It was a fun game, but seemed to be rare in Australia.
My first time commenting. Subbed and belled today. Watched a dozen or so videos. It's fascinating and your troubleshooting skills are neat. I have zero electrical ability, but starting to learn at almost 50 years old. My only memory of pinball was a game in the campground we were staying at long ago. I used to sink every quarter I had in it, but I don't remember the name anymore. I ended up playing for over an hour on one quarter. Went so long I had to pee. When the score flipped over I kept going. And ultimately, wet myself standing there. I remember running to the camper as fast as the wind, as I didn't want anyone to know it was me that left the puddle. True story. Never forgot that. My favorite game was Galaga, and making the game stop dropping bombs and running the high score up and was godlike in the arcade. Ahh the good old days. Thanks for the videos. Maybe once show us a few soldering techniques. I'd just like to see "proper" soldering.
I "invested" defiantly not wasted wayyyyyy to much time on black knight. Also, im glad you noticed the light out at the end of the video, it was driving me nuts lol Love seeing these old games again. Really takes me back to the time of great games and greater music blasting out of the bowling alley jukebox.
Thanks for taking the time to make these videos! I just picked up a Taxi, and I'd like to learn how to fix problems when they pop up. I ordered the solder sucker from your website,to show my appreciation. Now I need to check your videos for more system 11 game repairs!

Thank you for saving these beautiful vintage machines from my childhood for prosperity Ron. As always, it has been fascinating to see you repair this one ! 👍
Great video! I bought a Firepower last fall, and I learned a lot of useful maintenance skills from this video. I grew up playing Firepower, Black Knight, and 8-Ball Deluxe. It's great these things are still around and that they can be maintained by the average Joe!
@@LyonsArcade Thanks. I remember that we idolized those repair techs when they came in to service the machines. “Getting paid to play video games”. Much simpler times for sure.

The cracks on the backglass actually add to the effect. Love it! Can't believe I just watched 19 minutes of you playing the game :) Outstanding machine..!
I wonder how many times people have played this one good enough to have the bonus maxed out (max bonus points with max multiplier [the entire sword 100% lit up])? It’s good that there’s people like you that repair these classic machines.
Happy to see it live.. I remember Phoenix drop targets would be problematic on player machines.. (player machines a well loved never refurbished.. tape would often be used adding more skill.. it’s why I love player machines)
I didn't even notice that was ware in the back glass I thought it was part of the actual design, this game is just a beaut , awesome job getting it working again
Fantastic videos love the older pinballs and the older type arcade machines. I used to love it when visiting our local arcade in the UK and a machine would malfunction. The bloke would appear with his huge bunch of keys and I would get to see inside the machines. It's great that you can still repair these machines and have been going through your past uploads. Thanks
Thanks I own the new Black Knight "Sword of Rage" and my friend owns "Black Knight 2000" great multi-level game. Interesting to hear the voice and hear how it's progressed over the decade versions. I had never seen the 1980 version playing, only seen photos. Thanks as always.
Fantastic repair skills on this machine. I loved it how you just kept on changing chips, diodes etc one after the other until you knocked all the issues out of the park. Wow….. that’s something to watch and learn from. Thanks for the education Ronnie. …. you slayed the black knight!
Great game! Loved watching the troubleshooting and repair work. I played this game at a bowling alley in the mid-80s and thought it was the best thing since sliced bread. I sucked because I wasn't coordinated enough to use both sets of flippers at the time! I also didn't realize then how robotic the Black Knight's voice was at the time! I just thought that he was talking was cool as hell! Thanks for the videos, Ron!
Oh hellz yeah, even after seeing the complexity of this one, I think I still want to find me a Black Knight (W/ _"Magna-Save!"_ ) Most excellent videos fella's!!!
I loved playing that game as a kid. Put many a quarter in it and got pretty good. Wish it was still there when I stopped by your shop the other day. Would have loved to have taken a look at it. Regardless, it was nice to meet you guys. Hopefully I'll get the chance to stop by again if I'm in the area.
I thunk you're right about the cracks on the back. It looks like lightning coming off the knight. Working on these things and getting them working is awesome.
Love your pinball videos! I own 4 games and this Black Knight pin was my first. Regarding repairs, I know enough to be dangerous and have successfully repaired a few things on the games from time to time. I always learn a few things and pick up some tips watching your videos….thanks! I like your detailed explanations and absolutely love your humor! Tom G.
Thank you Tom, I appreciate you watching along with us, we're just trying to have fun and help these machines survive at the same time :) I'm glad you get the spirit of it. We'll see you on the next video!
I swear to God, I expected to see some guy named Bob Williams comment: "Never been to your channel before, I hear you're talking spit about me" 😁😁 I've enjoyed watching the restoration of Black Knight and a few others. I'm a recovering laye 70s Radio Shack employee, I miss component level repairable stuff. Thanks for the shows
I was thinking while I was doing that rant "uh... I hope there's not some dude named Bob Williams that watches my channel, lol" Thanks for watching Ron we appreciate it man!
Joe; I wasn’t complaining, you mentioned one bulb being maybe the only one in the vid which I didn’t notice but noticed the other one when you were doing the test. That game always seemed to the one of the loudest in the arcades back then with the loud voice. It was the initial lure to get you started!! Great memories for me hearing you resurrect all those sounds again with your rebuilds. You have all my faves! Defender; middle command; and more.. keep up the great work!
@@michaelenglish7905 You were complaining, the only comment you made was to say a lightbulb was out. think about why you do that, and who else you do that to.
Ron, you crack me up, you are so funny. I have an old backglass I just clear coated. Easy job. I love the videos and can't wait for latest ones, so have to go back through your back catalogue to get my fix. 🤣 👍 💥 I just replaced 2 solenoid transistors on my restoration I have nearly finished, just like in your vid.
So glad I found your series on this machine. I have one at home that has several issues that I desperately want to get working again. Having these videos to reference definitely gives me a little more confidence!
You can fix it Omniscient Z. Remember too that the games from around the same time were very similar, and can be fixed the same way. We have done videos on a Phoenix here on the channel too that is the same setup... Good luck with it, if you run into problems send us a message. Fix the power supply first!
This was in my dads store it was a fun game to play and yes we all played the hell out of it. I want to one day get me one and add it to my collection. I love pinball its my hobby. It was around January 1981when it came in.
Great videos on the Black Knight! This was my all time favorite pinball back in the day (when they were brand new)! I own one now but it's in pieces and I haven't had the time to continue with restoring it. Hopefully one day I will.
@@LyonsArcade love your videos man, you had a D&D project that I watched about 20 times because it really helped me while I was working on my D&D project where the connectors go, and what kind of transformer I needed (yes, mine didn't have a transformer...) so thank YOU!!!!
Not a transistor, a darlington transistor pair. Used a lot for high current driver circuits. Used to replace a lot of darlington pairs in dot matrix printers back in the day, as they were driving stepper motors and the solenoids for the printer head. But i remember playing the black night pinball game back in the day. The music and sound effects set it apart from other pinball machines. Which was needed to compete with video games. And the best desoldering equipment is what works for you. I have used so many over the years, and the low cost spring loaded suckers work great. That along with some solder wick and liquid flux will do almost all you need to desoldering.
Hes not into chip level stuff well after all the chips an other repairs it needed its good he sent it into you! As for that one blue light it just adds to the game looks good man
I discovered it in the early 80s, when I was nearly 30, in Aberystwyth (Wales - so it might be the same machine!) Half way along the promenade was a tall building with a spire and in the half basement was an arcade. Black Night was at 4 o’clock in the hall, as I remember, and once played, never forgotten. The only other machine I ever got to know well enough to understand what was going on was at York University where I attended some music summer schools, but so pale in comparison I can’t remember it’s name.
Black Knight is a really fun game ! When I caught a glimpse of it sitting next to the arcade machine you were working on little while back I got excited wondering what other great pins you have squirted away back there :) keep up the great content Ron !
Spectacular Ron! Excellent game, I had forgotten about the last chance, man that is a cool feature. Good job on the revitalization of this survivor! Oh by the way you have an captivating commentary voice. Your game play was about as good as I was with the first dollar played. can I fit in anymore positivity and nice comments? Thanks for all you do to entertain and educate us, keep up the good fight! Cheers.
I've used both the manual solder sucker and the automatic type de-soldering handset. I'm partial to the automatic handset which I've used for years. Yes, you have to clean out the built-up solder occasionally, but you have to do that with the manual ones too. The trick with the automatic style to keep them from clogging is to set the temp a bit higher than a soldering iron, but most importantly to run the vacuum for a few seconds 'after' you've pulled it away from the hole you just vacuumed. This gives it max air flow and allows the solder inside to fully get sucked out of the nozzle and barrel. Most people were never taught that they need to do this, and so they get frustrated with the constant clogging. When necessary, I also use a tool that has multiple diameter wires to ream out the nozzle when necessary (I know PACE sells one for their de-soldering handset, which is what I'm used to using). Hopefully these tips will help others from getting frustrated with their automatic handsets. When used correctly, a de-soldering handset can save you a lot of time and effort.
I forgot to mention that I really enjoy the videos and the time and effort you put into them to pass along your knowledge and experience! Keep 'em coming! :)
Great videos! I have a Black Knight in my game room and its a great game to play. I had some of the same switch issues as your game, and were easy fixes. Too bad you dont do just board repair. I watched your videos on a Sea Wolf you repaired a few years ago. Mine was working, now is not. Your videos did help me check a few things. Hoping to get it working soon. Keep the great videos coming!!

Thanks
Thank you for watching Nigel!
Retro is where it's at, that's official!
You got that right :)
Great series! Black Knight and Black Knight 2000 are a couple of my favorite pins
Thanks I own the new Black Knight "Sword of Rage" and my friend owns "Black Knight 2000" great multi-level game. Interesting to hear the voice and hear how it's progressed over the decade versions. I had never seen the 1980 version playing, only seen photos. Thanks as always.
Thank you for watching vBarbecue, we appreciate it!
If or when I can afford it.
Black knight would definitely be on my want list.
It's pretty awesome!
Oh hellz yeah, even after seeing the complexity of this one, I think I still want to find me a Black Knight (W/ _"Magna-Save!"_ )
Most excellent videos fella's!!!
It's a great game!
Nice to meet you too Solitaire come by anytime! We'll see you on the next video!
Ron, I loved this game back in day. I remember playing this game a a local bowling alley. Thanks for the memories.
thank you for watching David, glad you enjoyed the video!
I thunk you're right about the cracks on the back. It looks like lightning coming off the knight.
Working on these things and getting them working is awesome.
Thanks Chris, glad you enjoyed it!
I swear to God, I expected to see some guy named Bob Williams comment: "Never been to your channel before, I hear you're talking spit about me" 😁😁
I've enjoyed watching the restoration of Black Knight and a few others.
PS I think it was an old Radio Shack desoldering tool that was used as a prop hypodermic spray in the original star trek TV series
Wow... speechless.... what a beautiful game! So many memories....
Yeah it's really pretty cool!
Looks like one of the green triangle lights on the left side is out too. Love that game. It used to be one of my favorites back in the day!
awww you couldn't resist, anything else you wanna complain about?
Thank you Rich, glad you enjoy it! We try to keep it light. I'll see you soon on the next one!
I have only played the spanish version of this in emulation... very cool to hear it in english!!
Thank you for watching Matteo!
I don't think I ever got to play this version. My local arcade had the Black Knight 2000 machine which is one of my all time favorites.
I've never had that one in but I heard it's awesome! Thanks for watching John!
Thank you for another informative and entertaining video! I really enjoy your work!
Thank you David, we appreciate it man
I bought one of those solder suckers. They are awesome
Yeah i'm very impressed by them! Thank you for watching Vic!
Great videos on the Black Knight! This was my all time favorite pinball back in the day (when they were brand new)! I own one now but it's in pieces and I haven't had the time to continue with restoring it. Hopefully one day I will.
I think you'll get it! Thank you for watching Pinball Fanatic!
Love to see a Ritchie pin saved!
Would love to own one of these. The sounds and gameplay are fun!
It's a really cool one for sure, thanks for watching Stephen!
@@LyonsArcade love your videos man, you had a D&D project that I watched about 20 times because it really helped me while I was working on my D&D project where the connectors go, and what kind of transformer I needed (yes, mine didn't have a transformer...) so thank YOU!!!!
i want to come visit the store. this looks like the coolest job on the planet
Come on by!
Wow these pinball machines are complicated electromechanical beasts 😲
They really have a lot going on :)
Very cool game ~ brings back a lot of childhood memories
Hes not into chip level stuff well after all the chips an other repairs it needed its good he sent it into you! As for that one blue light it just adds to the game looks good man
haha thanks Cyberhorn we appreciate it!
Good job Joe and well played. Your a great player.
"One more time" music to an operator's ears.
Yup, hear those quarters clink! Thank you for watching Matthew!
Beautiful job man. Greetings from Brazil!
Thank you William for watching in Brazil!
Nice video. Learned some repair tricks. My BK has some issues and I think with what I learned here I will be able to diagnose it. Thanks.
Glad to hear it Jonathan!
Black Knight is a really fun game ! When I caught a glimpse of it sitting next to the arcade machine you were working on little while back I got excited wondering what other great pins you have squirted away back there :) keep up the great content Ron !
We've got all kinds of stuff in right now! Thanks for watching Anthony!
Soldering wick/braid works great 👍🏼
Spectacular Ron!
Cheers.
Thank you Mac Daddy that's nice of you to say, see you on the next one!
@@LyonsArcade btw, just ordered a vampire and some solder via your Canadian link, hope you get credit!
Beautiful job Ron. Awesome game. One of Williams best. I just ordered one of those solder suckers.
Thanks Bob, have fun with it!
I love your play and fix the game 🥰 play it in 83 in sweden and i live in a ardade hall 😎
You had me smiling all through the vid Thanx very very much for your time!
Make blacknight great again! Played this back in the 80s as a young boy. Love it . Great work! You sir are a blessing to the gaming universe👍🏻
Talking smack to the Black Knight! It’s almost like I’m back there in the arcade again! Such an awesome video….
Thank you Kate appreciate you watching!
Thank you videorob v we just don't have time to do board repairs, we stay so behind on our own repairs and the few games we bring in to fix up from customers. We'll see you on the next video!
Great work. Just subscribed good to see the old games getting new life
Thank you Cal we appreciate that man, thank you for subscribing too!
