Late to the party here. That was definitely one of my favorite videos. I love seeing how the designers basically did computer programming (if/then/else) logic using analog switches and motors. There was some high-level thinking going on there. Thanks, Ron, for walking us through it in detail. I enjoyed every minute of the explanation.
This is Ron Lyons at his best! How someone could explain the workings of how this machine counts runs, make it not only make perfect sense, but also be entertaining! Is unreal. I was never a fan of E. M. machines, but now I am awed by them.
Wow - that was a lot of logic to work through but so good. That website was gold. Once you know how it should work it’s just trouble shooting each issue - simple but wasn’t as there were a few issues. One of the most fun em videos, thanks for sharing your thinking, loved it.
What a timely video. I’m in the process of bringing my 1972 World Series back to life and am down to a switch problem or two. Thanks for filming and sharing this video series!
21:39 I leave a lot of these videos on in the background when I am working and without fail, this immediately gets my attention every single time lmao.
I had the replay version of this machine and thoroughly enjoyed playing it and also loved the Gordon Morrison artwork as well. I think the rarest pinball I've owned was a 1974 Gottlieb Capt Card . I sold it to Herb Silvers a couple of years after I bought it .
i was at least TRYING to follow along when you asked if anyone was following along. Understanding all of it, maybe not fully, but mostly! Thanks again for doing these, i look forward to watching.
Every so often you pick a pinball machine that I remember playing as a kid. This is one, although I don't think it was the add-a-ball version. I'm loving this series.
This is one of my favorite series so far. This game is so cool, I mostly work on 80's pins and thought EM games are just switches and score reels, the ball wonders around without any particular goal, just to hit points. Well this is something else tho... The logic and complexity of this makes me absolutely crazy, this is like a mini computer logic with all of that stuff. Getting to like EM games, maybe I'll get one someday. Nice vid!
I think that switch you adjusted at the end of this video, was you taking out that short stop who was actually tagging the runner to second - OUT! Gotta have 9 players on the field, Ron. ...smile...
Abbott: Well, let's see who we have on the bags, Who's on first, What's on second, I Don't Know is on third... Costello: That's what I want to find out. Abbott: I say Who's on first, What's on second, I Don't Know's on third. Costello: Are you the manager? Abbott: Yes. Costello: You gonna be the coach too? Abbott: Yes. Costello: And you don't know the fellows' names? Abbott: Well I should. Costello: Well then who's on first? Abbott: Yes. Costello: I mean the fellow's name. Abbott: Who. Costello: The guy on first. Abbott: Who. Costello: The first baseman. Abbott: Who. Costello: The guy playing... Abbott: Who is on first! Costello: I'm asking YOU who's on first.
I remember playing one of the baseball games back in the mid 70s and hating it - those outlanes are vicious! I didn't understand baseball rules back then (still don't), so didn't appreciate that it was doing some funky calculations on the bases. I certainly appreciate it now though!
The EM Score Keeper Mod would look nice on this one 😁😉 I worked on one of these before and it was a nightmare, but finally get it working as it should.
Tanner sorry we haven't gotten it installed yet, this was actually filmed awhile back and belonged to a customer so we didn't get the opportunity to do it on that one... we have another EM we're doing soon that we will put it on and get you a video of it as soon as we can, sorry about the wait!
Wow. Fantastic trouble shooting Ronnie. … pinball does baseball. … All em pinball machines are an electro-mechanical computer. …. this machine really highlights that, as most folks understand the rules of baseball. … great detective work on the stepper unit, and real useful to me. …. I have a machine behaving in the same way (too much pull). ….. what a jewel this game is. Better get warmed up Ronnie. I think you’ll have lots of fun on this. You hit a home run with this video. Well done.
Thank you Mark i'm glad you enjoyed it, that pull on the stepper unit may have been what was wrong with the stepper unit that was on that Chicago Coin Rawhide now that I think of it too...
Use some cricket vinyl and an exacto knife to hand cut some paint masks. You got to paint it man no matter what he says it'll never get done if you don't! Such a classic game save it!
JOE, The baseball "Step Unit" it like a Score motor because it has its down thought process and decision making? I think the Step Unit is in relations with the Latch Relays called Single Relay, Double Relay, Triple Relay, which they are latch relays that are in a closed loop operation with the Step Unit?
Love your videos, im in the process of painting the playfeild on my 1969 williams suspense, what brand of paint do you recommend, also would the apple barn brand be good , keep the videos coming.
It's coming soon, but we already filmed other videos before the Firepower videos! We actually will be working on two Firepowers at the same time, there will be an overload of Firepowers :)
When I was growing up in the Detroit area, Canadian coins were always mixed in. Maybe 5-10% of the time. It was a lot easier to cross the border then and Canadians coming over for cigarettes was common. The coin sizes were (are?) close enough to be a problem in vending machines. Of course the bank won't take them but stores wouldn't think twice about giving them as change even though the value was never the same.
Canadian coins would just come back through the coin return, but occasionally some magnet in the coin return would latch onto the coin and jam up the coin mechanism.
Shouldn't there be an upright pin above the outlane metal bar on each side? It would help with letting the ball decide which lane to go down. Thanks for the video. I used to play machines like this, including this one, back in the day. It's become obvious 2 years of electronics engineering in college was not enough to learn pinball schematics though. They don't focus on pinball schematics anyway, maybe that's why.
"Add-a-ball isn't gambling" - Not sure if you're old enough to remember some of SC's stranger blue laws. I worked at a Winn-Dixie as a teen, and we could sell film but not flashbulbs. And we were only allowed four employees on Sundays, so the lines were all the way back to the meat counter.
That's funny stuff. I first started working in the 90's so I saw a litttttle bit of that stuff but not any of that. I do know, though, that an operator explained to me that he put Bingo machines out on location (the ones with all the holes, that were straight gambling devices) and they told him that he could only operate flipper machines, so he literally added 1 flipper to all of his bingo games. I used to work at Winn-Dixie too in the early 90's, I loved it, but I was a teenager so it's probably a good job for a teenager at least.
It seems like they could have come up with a score motor-like mechanical unit that physically emulated the 4 bases... on a single it does a 1/4 turn, double a 1/2 turn, etc., with little snap-up units where there's a 'man on base' and down when there's not ... maybe easier to understand .... but more expensive to manufacture.
Here, in Michigan, many places will not expect Canadian currency because the Canadian dollar is most often of less value than our dollar. I believe the coins also a different weigh so our vending machines don’t like them.🤷♂️
not really, I just enjoy the ones other people have designed... I still haven't played a tenth of them or worked on a twentieth of them so I'm happy to find new ones I can look at and see what makes them tick.
Are y'all gonna repaint it? The suspense is killing me. I'd make a stencil from the good side. PS: Oh, Shane's gonna do it. It's sad that whoever messed up the paint before didn't know about masking tape.
@@LyonsArcade it depends on the situation. Kinfolk, maybe. Client paid agreeably for all the prior work but fell on hard times, maybe. But if he nickeled and dimed every step of the way up till then, nope.
The NYS Thruway used to discount Canadian money by 30% to 40%. Grocery stores never bothered with discounts on Canadian coins because we were just buying small stuff anyway. But yeah, the laundry machine won't accept Canadian coins.
Nightmare wheel and relays. Thank god for the microchip. Easier to fix the microchip. Just replace it far easier than messing about with that wheel and relays.
I'm just amazed by the people who figured out how to make all this stuff work! Mental Giants!!!

I like these CSI Rock Hill cases. Way to find the broken piece. I thought you would weld them back together. Fun times.
I had a friend recently moved back to the states and he's a huge Yankees fan, so I used to wind him up by saying How bout them Red Sox 😆
Wow! Great work Ron! Are you sure this machine wasn't developed at Bletchley Park?
Those are some Barry Oursler-esque outlanes, cool wedgehead.

So, are the rollovers on the bases just used as indicator lights? They don't score anything?

Fairly easy to understand the Relay logic, but man this could be done with a dozen TTL ICs easy peasy.

All this Single, Double, Triple talk is making me want to head out to Wendy's.
Interesting that it's NOT a pitch & bat style pinball, but it's got this baseball theme in a different way.

Oh yes, I’ve been shocked many many times. The worst is the arcade monitors! I got shocked by a pinball driver board yesterday actually…
The first, second and third base relays, should of been named who, what, and I don't know.
Bases loaded. Home Run = 1000 points. 4 Runs scored = 4000 points. That makes 5000 points. Sounds like it works fine to me. No?
