I think the answer is artistry. You have to view your work and your performances as art and yourself as an artist with something to say. You can be meticulous about every aspect, or you can enjoy all the little flaws. As long as it fits your vision, and makes others think deeply about your work. Then you got it.
One small observation. When Billie and Finneas say they spent x days or y months on something, it’s not just that one thing. They’re simultaneously working on other songs and constantly flipping between them. Which is not to contradict your basic point about the pursuit of perfection.
This is your most important video. I've found all of this to be true in the last year, is very frustrating or sad sometimes but it is a beautiful process that leads you to find the exit of the creative mace that you enter willingly and when you finally come out, you realize you were more capable of what you ever dream of. My band has only released 3 songs for this very reason lol. I record vocals at home in my room and I'm the one holding up all of the songs we have written because I hate how I sound and am entirely unhappy with my melodies. Recording in a paid studio can have an advantage of you need to finish within the time you paid. Since I record at home I can do 1000s of takes and days of recording only to throw it all away and have nothing to show for it. Funny enough two of the songs we have released I used Billie Eilish songs as references for certain parts.
This gap between an amateur and a pro is thousands of hours of dedicated experience and of trying to find something new and cool in vocals. Thats the same in every kind of human duty.
I love the Billie Eilish albums. She and her brother are relentless, and because of the level of detail in the album, it delights me every time I listen to it. But then again, I am one of the top listeners of Billie Eilish on RUclips. Great to hear that you appreciate all the hard work Billie Eilish and Finneas put into it their work.
Chris, you say this a lot in class and this video reinforces it. I've been so grateful to you for pushing me to think this way. It's made a huge difference in my singing as well as my own enjoyment. I love having the freedom to explore making mistakes while learning how to really control your voice. I've grown so much since joining your classes.

Paul Rodgers, according to legend, was a one take master in his days in Free and Bad Company. His vocals are always great, but sometimes not technically perfect. But he went with "if it feels good, it is good," and left it at one take. As an opposing mindset, Sting once said that he overthinks and constantly "corrects" his work while creating it, and that he finally says enough, even though he didn't consider it done. His quote was..."I never finish a song, I abandon it."
I really needed this video. I hit a wall today because I've been trying to record a song for days and my voice, pronunciation, room environment etc were so horrible that I felt that it could be it for me in the world of music. Whatever I do I just can't get it right, from waking up too relaxed or too tense which didn't allow me to control my voice as I normally would to god damn burping non stop😄and whatnot. It feels like others just make 3 takes and it's perfect while I on a hundreth take just can't sing one line properly and even if I do I can't sit the recording into the mix but I think I just need to be patient and continue until it worked out

I'm an ameteur and learning to do everything myself as a hobby, and I've been listening to some things I've been singing now and back then and I'm noticing that I enjoy some of my older things but the singing tended to sound "cringe" or "embarrassing". But the more I lean into a particular character when singing - which could be recapturing how I felt when I was making the song in a way that people can connect with - it sounded better. There's a lot that goes into singing than just the notes. And recently I've been learning that you can even sing the notes worse, or mumble, or do all kinds of insane things that you are taught to not normally do, like leaning forward or other weird things, and if you're charismatic enough people will like it. I was showing some people a WIP that had vocals and the beginning I had fleshed out more with rerecorded vocals and the second part had the older ones that are at least 6 months old and I could hear in their reaction that they cringed at the second half. But the first half they really enjoyed. It's still the same composition but the feeling for the song just changes when you do things that aren't even just singing, but closer to acting. I feel like a lot of people don't talk enough about that. Especially with how it can carry over to the production of music, and the effects you use and the decisions you make with what you want to enhance while looking things over in the mix. There's a lot of unique things to learn about myself, personally. And I still need to get better before making presentable things, but I'm slowly getting there and it's pretty nice to learn more about myself in ways that aren't even fully musically inclined while doing it.
I can relate to the obsession with getting the first phrase exactly right. When I record vocals, I will invariably go back and redo the first phrase. I couldn't even say why. It's just that something is lacking. It's like it takes a line of two for me to get embedded in the song.
Mr. Liepe I'm glad you made that video. My friend and producer wanted me to sing a song but I'm no singer. I'm the bloody composer so it took me two months exercising to get a simple song right. 😅 After this experience I fully agree what the artists say and what you showed to us in that inspiring video. 8:34 This is really important and you explained it exactly how it works! I sometimes find myself working on a single song instrumentals for hours, just to listen to it and change the melody completely and make something completely new and more interesting with it.
Most of us probably need to do a lot of re-recording. But it's also a HUGE advantage to know people that "know" how YOU should sound, when you're great. What's good with your voice? Sometimes it can be hard to know yourself. Is this really the best of me? I got complaint on my songs that it's something about my vocals that don't click, but it's not bad the music, the person said. I believe it might be cause in my mind i'm a songwriter, i'm not "the artist". Recording yourself is incredibly difficult, there's no doubt those whom work together has a HUGE advantage. Almost like all cheatcodes unlocked in i game.
Every single great singer/songwritter/performer I've admire over the years have one thing in common - besides the natural talent and charisma ofc - hardwork, all work insanely hard and for endless hours on their craft and those are the ones that somehow "miraculously" have long successful careers.
I always smile when people see someone on stage and marvel at their "talent", thinking they have no idea how many hours and hours of work went into one simple song beforehand. Many seem to think someone just walks onto a stage, opens their mouth and sings, and it comes out perfect, just like that. Nope. When i first started singing and writing songs, it was just me and an acoustic guitar. My voice was very gutteral, loud almost aggressive. The more you work with microphones whether live or in the studio, the more singing will become a dynamic relationship between you and the mic mix. You can use dynamics, and sing from a combination of throat and diaphragm. And you will start instictually moving closer and further away within 1 song. Think of singing as wielding the reverb and eq and meeting it where its at, or dancing with it.
Kurt Cobain sang all of In Utero in a single session, and great songs like 'Come As You Are' in just one or two takes. I think there's something to that, man.
We need a reaction video to The Line by Twenty One Pilots, and or all of Clancy. I loved your analysis on Next Semester, but I'm disappointed that it stopped there.
i also think its important to know that you can still have it and it be effortless once you've figured out how to do it. billie and finneas are both overthinkers with music but also regularly tackle things that they want to improve on even if it isn't that necessary. billie said when singing what i was made for she was relearning singing to match a certain style. in billies documentary, she was shown struggling to get the right vocal takes, when most of them were great and even finneas said they were great. also finneas often explains very very small details he added that most listeners won't hear, so while i think they both are very great musicians, i don't think their process is the most healthy, i mean billie was miserable making her debut album shown in her documentary. and shes expressed similar discomfort making the new albums, i sometimes wonder if shed even be making music still if she never got the fame and support shes gotten through the years given how much she seems to dread it. music should be fun with a reasonable amount of discipline if you want it to be a job, it shouldn't be debilitating.
i do this all the time lmfaooo i produce my music on garageband...and i always try to be perfect...I have adhd btw so i'm bound to do this with my music
Thank you Chris for this video. It reminds me of that video of yours about covering songs. When it comes to creating and producing it needs to be holistic. It's different from live performance although it's not too far imo. Btw Billie's new album is so good, you should do vocal analysis on some of the songs! One of my favorites of 2024 along with Linkin Park's From Zero.
I play and sing my songs over and over every day, constantly, with just me and an acoustic guitar. I don't have a system. It's just repetition and listening to myself until it feels right. On another note, I see Billie managing her Tourette's while conducting an interview. That must take effort.

I think one thing we aren’t mentioning is a lot of us do everything on our own for many reasons like maybe not finding anyone interested in what we’re doing.. almost all of the “Greats” have a team of people that they get to work with. We are lucky to find even one other person of similar skill and mind set to work with and help in going through the weeds to find “IT”. If I feel like I found the “thing”.. it was because I spent hours throwing shit at the wall seeing what sticks and most of the time it’s unexplainable.. you hear ghost notes that you end up punching in and they become one of the best things in the song. Great artists who have the ear to pick up on that will always be great but I often wonder what someone like Michael Jackson would have created if he didn’t have access to some of the best musicians and producers in the world.. human nature isn’t even his song but of course he did wonders with it.
Yes! Many big names bring splinters of ideas to producers and session musicians. For the record...Birds of a Feather (which I like very much) is VERY similar to Last Christmas by Wham from 1984.
Her style of singing really sends me back to Lovefool by Cardigans. Very similar. But there’s so much difference in mixing style. In Billie’s songs vocal is huge Also that melody sends me to Babe Rexxa’s No broken hearts

At 0:02 I thought we were getting a cover of Epic by Faith No More for a second there Chris! 😂 In seriousness, the "steps" thing really makes sense to me. I sing a lot in the car, and I sing along to my favourite band The Frames, fronted by Glen Hansard (who you should totally do a video on!) and he can sing quite high and quite powerfully... by taking "steps" of practicing over the last few months "toward" those notes, I can not only hit them for the first ever time, but I can start to hit them with power... if I spend time with them. So now when I'm recording my own stuff, I always used to be a one-taker, but now I will do the same as this... do it over and over until "IT" shines through. You know it when you hear it 😊😊
Brian Wilson often put the other guy's in the Beach Boy's through sheer hell with his demands to satisfy his quest for perfection during recording certain songs.
Funny how I like both Billie and Bruno, and now hearing about Billie's songwriting process, I'm struck by how similar it is to Bruno's own songwriting process. 24K Magic and An Evening with Silk Sonic both took almost 2 years to write because Bruno was apparently obsessive over every single detail, and not just vocals but chord progressions as well.

First minute comment: Life is like too short to be meticulous... and so much for 'try to make lots of quantity to practice and then quality', I guess... Yes, I wish I were brilliant enough to be perfectionist, but... And yet: Somehow, this is encouraging anyway!
I feel that pointing out that so many of the musical greats had very different methods of creating music is a good thing to remind people whom the method in video doesn't help. Everyone is different and has a unique point of view of how art should be created. Not everyone is a perfectionist who will repeat the same 5 notes for 100 takes.
The best people don't navel gaze like this. I mean, they bragged about 87 segments to one simple melody line (during the Letterman interview). They're selling being meticulous because it's successful for them and you'll buy it. But others are more successful that don't spend days on a five note progression! Mariah would roll her eyes at this. She could knock that out before lunch.
There certainly are artists that just step up to the mic and nail it... but have you watched the Celine Dion documentary? The recent one? That ability to step up to the mic comes from YEARS AND YEARS of doing things very similar to what Billie and Bruno talk about in this video. the time and introspection must happen... It might come and go and be implemented in different forms and settings, but it is absolutely there!
I don't necessarily disagree, but my idea is that instead of pouring that intense hard work on each project, one should spend their entire life improving oneself as an artist, honing every possible skill, so that when the inspiration hits, 1 single take would be "it", pure as pure can get.
You know there are very talented people outside of the USA, but they don't get views just because they live in countries that holds few people. And streaming sites and RUclips works locally. But what they're in the clouds! Is it Unreal Engine 5 or what? :D
Start a second pay to listen and critique the song. That would be awesome( chris farley voice)😂I think i do this, i know i focus on lyrics more than anything and convey what i want to say musically, and i can sing pretty well do harmonies pretty well, but it feels paint by numbers even though i work really hard at melody.
It had been done forever, but there is a whole generation of musicians who hasn’t fully internalized this mindset. So it is new to some and a needed reminder to many others
From experience I know that just going over and over something eventually unlocks an idea or discovery that just 'Works'. For some reason, if you continue striving for something, eventually something clicks and just feels and sounds right, but it takes a lot of commitment and hard work, which many people just don't have or are not willing to give - it's really about how much you want it. Unfortunately Chris, I do not approve of tutors taking advantage of people's dreams and aspirations for profit, when you know that 99% of all aspiring artists and writers will not actually "make it". I feel that it's a kind of exploitation and morally misguided, but hey, if that's how you want to get rich, that's up to you.
I make no claim that you'll get rich and famous.. Just that your voice and music will be better if you are willing to put in the time and work! Not "better compared to famous people". Just better... your best YOU!
@@chrisliepe I'm sure we both don't want a long protracted discussion about this, but c'mon, the whole free course thing to entice people in to actually in the end spend money - it's a very obvious tried and trusted marketing technique. Why not state in very obvious terms then, up-front, that people that take lessons with you (or anyone) will not, in 99% of cases actually make it in the music industry, or indeed be able to make a decent living from their singing, and that to become a good singer will take years of lessons and to point out exactly what kind of expenditure that will require?

I believe it might be cause in my mind i'm a songwriter, i'm not "the artist". Recording yourself is incredibly difficult, there's no doubt those whom work together has a HUGE advantage. Almost like all cheatcodes unlocked in i game.

I always smile when people see someone on stage and marvel at their "talent", thinking they have no idea how many hours and hours of work went into one simple song beforehand. Many seem to think someone just walks onto a stage, opens their mouth and sings, and it comes out perfect, just like that. Nope. When i first started singing and writing songs, it was just me and an acoustic guitar. My voice was very gutteral, loud almost aggressive. The more you work with microphones whether live or in the studio, the more singing will become a dynamic relationship between you and the mic mix. You can use dynamics, and sing from a combination of throat and diaphragm. And you will start instictually moving closer and further away within 1 song. Think of singing as wielding the reverb and eq and meeting it where its at, or dancing with it.
This made me motivation hop in the studio and record ❤
Kurt Cobain sang all of In Utero in a single session, and great songs like 'Come As You Are' in just one or two takes. I think there's something to that, man.

i also think its important to know that you can still have it and it be effortless once you've figured out how to do it. billie and finneas are both overthinkers with music but also regularly tackle things that they want to improve on even if it isn't that necessary. billie said when singing what i was made for she was relearning singing to match a certain style. in billies documentary, she was shown struggling to get the right vocal takes, when most of them were great and even finneas said they were great. also finneas often explains very very small details he added that most listeners won't hear, so while i think they both are very great musicians, i don't think their process is the most healthy, i mean billie was miserable making her debut album shown in her documentary. and shes expressed similar discomfort making the new albums, i sometimes wonder if shed even be making music still if she never got the fame and support shes gotten through the years given how much she seems to dread it. music should be fun with a reasonable amount of discipline if you want it to be a job, it shouldn't be debilitating.

Thank you Chris for this video. It reminds me of that video of yours about covering songs. When it comes to creating and producing it needs to be holistic. It's different from live performance although it's not too far imo. Btw Billie's new album is so good, you should do vocal analysis on some of the songs! One of my favorites of 2024 along with Linkin Park's From Zero.

I play and sing my songs over and over every day, constantly, with just me and an acoustic guitar. I don't have a system. It's just repetition and listening to myself until it feels right. On another note, I see Billie managing her Tourette's while conducting an interview. That must take effort.

I think one thing we aren’t mentioning is a lot of us do everything on our own for many reasons like maybe not finding anyone interested in what we’re doing.. almost all of the “Greats” have a team of people that they get to work with. We are lucky to find even one other person of similar skill and mind set to work with and help in going through the weeds to find “IT”. If I feel like I found the “thing”.. it was because I spent hours throwing shit at the wall seeing what sticks and most of the time it’s unexplainable.. you hear ghost notes that you end up punching in and they become one of the best things in the song. Great artists who have the ear to pick up on that will always be great but I often wonder what someone like Michael Jackson would have created if he didn’t have access to some of the best musicians and producers in the world.. human nature isn’t even his song but of course he did wonders with it.
Yes! Many big names bring splinters of ideas to producers and session musicians.
For the record...Birds of a Feather (which I like very much) is VERY similar to Last Christmas by Wham from 1984.
Her style of singing really sends me back to Lovefool by Cardigans. Very similar. But there’s so much difference in mixing style. In Billie’s songs vocal is huge

In seriousness, the "steps" thing really makes sense to me. I sing a lot in the car, and I sing along to my favourite band The Frames, fronted by Glen Hansard (who you should totally do a video on!) and he can sing quite high and quite powerfully... by taking "steps" of practicing over the last few months "toward" those notes, I can not only hit them for the first ever time, but I can start to hit them with power... if I spend time with them. So now when I'm recording my own stuff, I always used to be a one-taker, but now I will do the same as this... do it over and over until "IT" shines through. You know it when you hear it 😊😊

Funny how I like both Billie and Bruno, and now hearing about Billie's songwriting process, I'm struck by how similar it is to Bruno's own songwriting process. 24K Magic and An Evening with Silk Sonic both took almost 2 years to write because Bruno was apparently obsessive over every single detail, and not just vocals but chord progressions as well.

I feel that pointing out that so many of the musical greats had very different methods of creating music is a good thing to remind people whom the method in video doesn't help. Everyone is different and has a unique point of view of how art should be created. Not everyone is a perfectionist who will repeat the same 5 notes for 100 takes.

The best people don't navel gaze like this. I mean, they bragged about 87 segments to one simple melody line (during the Letterman interview). They're selling being meticulous because it's successful for them and you'll buy it. But others are more successful that don't spend days on a five note progression! Mariah would roll her eyes at this. She could knock that out before lunch.
There certainly are artists that just step up to the mic and nail it... but have you watched the Celine Dion documentary? The recent one? That ability to step up to the mic comes from YEARS AND YEARS of doing things very similar to what Billie and Bruno talk about in this video. the time and introspection must happen... It might come and go and be implemented in different forms and settings, but it is absolutely there!

I don't necessarily disagree, but my idea is that instead of pouring that intense hard work on each project, one should spend their entire life improving oneself as an artist, honing every possible skill, so that when the inspiration hits, 1 single take would be "it", pure as pure can get.

From experience I know that just going over and over something eventually unlocks an idea or discovery that just 'Works'. For some reason, if you continue striving for something, eventually something clicks and just feels and sounds right, but it takes a lot of commitment and hard work, which many people just don't have or are not willing to give - it's really about how much you want it. Unfortunately Chris, I do not approve of tutors taking advantage of people's dreams and aspirations for profit, when you know that 99% of all aspiring artists and writers will not actually "make it". I feel that it's a kind of exploitation and morally misguided, but hey, if that's how you want to get rich, that's up to you.
I make no claim that you'll get rich and famous.. Just that your voice and music will be better if you are willing to put in the time and work! Not "better compared to famous people". Just better... your best YOU!
@@chrisliepe I'm sure we both don't want a long protracted discussion about this, but c'mon, the whole free course thing to entice people in to actually in the end spend money - it's a very obvious tried and trusted marketing technique. Why not state in very obvious terms then, up-front, that people that take lessons with you (or anyone) will not, in 99% of cases actually make it in the music industry, or indeed be able to make a decent living from their singing, and that to become a good singer will take years of lessons and to point out exactly what kind of expenditure that will require?
