this right here is so true, if it’s not for the producers who are the ones who essentially create the sounds and set the trends, really how else is there gonna be anything fresh? there are way too many talented and experimental producers out there, just the ones being pushed all tend to sound super polished to the point it’s sterile and they all have similar production styles. if the record labels aren’t gonna choose these types of producers, us as consumers need to start supporting underground producers hardcore where the industry won’t be able to ignore them

It's because good music is good music. A visual dosen't make a song good, the actual song makes a song good. I think that's why Billie Eilish has remained the most consistently successful artist out of all of the mentioned. Take away the music videos, take away the visualisers, even take away her own image or looks. The voice is there, the music is there. Our generation is too addicted to constantly looking at visuals that we forget to listen to the music, that's why people think Tate McRae is the new Britney. Maybe she's on Britney's level dance-wise, but if you take away all that - she doesn't have the hits, lyrics or melodies that Britney had at all!

The only Gen Z pop girl who, for now, seems like she will stand the test of time is Billie Eilish. She's been on the scene since, more or less, 2016 and has had multiple huge hits, accolades, a unique voice, a specific style and personality, and a memorable brand. She's not the next Avril or Halsey, nor does she aspire to be the next iteration of anyone. She's the first one of her kind and future pop girlies will try to be the next Billie Eilish.
This is the same reason why the rest of the girls may not last. Sabrina Carpenter has been in the game for a decade and only now, that she has built this coquette persona, has she finally managed to make three huge hits. But she's a product now and nothing coming from her seems genuine or made with heart and soul. She and her team chase profit and they're getting that bag, but that's not a lasting recipe. Unless I see her music video or overly sexy performances, I don't know it's Sabrina. If I hear her voice on the radio, I won't instantly recognize her as I'd recognize Billie.
Tyla is mostly relying on her sex appeal, amazing body, and hot style. She often states she wants to be the next Rihanna or surpass her, which comes across as narcissistic and arrogant. Yet, her voice isn't the strongest nor she has a very recognizable brand.
Olivia Rodrigo has a chance to last because she has multiple hits, has interesting lyrics, and has a recognizable brand. However, I guess she may be lacking the IT factor or her second album simply didn't capture as much interest as the first one.
Tate McRae has a similar problem as Tyla. She's incredibly sexy and good-looking and has a few great songs, but she's leaning too strongly into being the next Britney Spears. Her three latest videos look almost like ripe-offs of Britney's 20000s videos. She was more recognizable during her early, darker phase than now. She's lost her unique sound and direction.
I don't think any other girl is even in competition. I won't count Dua Lipa and Charli XCX because although they may have a big Gen Z fanbase, they're Millennials with a clearly Millennial style and have been on the scene for a long time. They have already proven they're going to last.
But beyond Billy, it's unlikely Gen Z will have artists of the same caliber and power as Millennials, Gen X, and Boomers. Taylor Swift and Ariana Grande are likely the last ones to be global superstars.

I think Olivia Rodrigo and Billie Eilish will stand the test of time. With Olivia she represents a criteria of girlhood that exceeds stereotypical principles.. she isn’t afraid to call out the contradictions in systematics, she embraces everything that means to be a woman, form envy’s to sexual liberations. Her fandom also to a similar caliber of swifts is made up of the younger generation, her concerts are cathartic and have to be some of the loudest concerts I’ve ever witnessed, her “it” factor criteria is of narrative preface, she’s a figurehead and her fanbase unlike a lot of these girls exceeds beyond the US. Guts and sour are hugely successful albums and she continues to break records from legends like Britney Spears and Whitney Houston.

The problem with Lil Nas X and Dua Lipa is timing. The Montero album was in 2021.... It'll be 2025 soon and that's 4 YEARS without a new album. Dua Lipa also took 4 years between Future Nostalgia and Radical Optimism. These newer artists are simply not well established enough to be taking such long breaks between releases. Rihanna released roughly one album a year for 7 years straight. That's unheard of today...

Also she had the controversy, her “queer-baiting” was a big topic, also her being a industry plan and nepo baby were big as well.

I think that many artists fall into a few categories: moody sad, “I need a gimmick” or very bland with no branding. There’s many reasons why they don’t get far.
Take Madison Beer or Tate McCrae. Madison has the voice, the looks but NOT the branding. I’ve seen multiple videos about her and the main consensus is that people don’t know that she’s an artist and NOT AN INFLUENCER. To me that’s a problem. You don’t people to think you’re a tiktoker, or an IG model that does music on the side. Her fashion choices although I like some of her outfits there’s no clear idea of what her schtick is. Is she like a Sabrina Carpenter coquette style or like a futuristic cybercore aesthetic? We, the audience do not know.
Tate McCrae (idk if I’m spelling her name right please correct me if I’m wrong.😭) is a dancer. We try to push her as the new Britney Spears.
Which to me we do not need another Britney because Britney cannot be topped. Tate is a dancer at her core, so she should have songs that cater to her strength (think of Slave 4 U or Janet Jackson’s All For You or If).
Now me personally I do not like her “cursive” singing style and wish she could sing in a different style.
Now another thing is her being Canadian. I’m Canadian myself and I’ll say this, I don’t mind her using the “hockey” look// aesthetic BUT we’re more than that and it seems to work in her favour as it used as an identifiable image.
I want her to use more pop dance like productions. She’s kinda like a Nelly/Fergie hybrid, just without the spunk they both had.
Chloe and Halle are an exceptional duo, and yes they work very well together and I think that them splitting up so early into their careers was a mistake and I think they need new management because to me Beyoncé isn’t doing it for me. To me she’s not doing her job as she should be doing. I do wish them the best though because I believe they can make it!!

For Tate, I also think branding her as the "new Britney Spears" is hurting her more than helping. She's setting herself up for too high of standard which hasn't been looking good for her lately. Especially coming from the consumer's perspective, if I want to listen to a "Britney" style song then I'll just go listen to Britney herself, I don't need to listen to a mockery or cheap remake of her. Tate needs to find her own artistic identity, you can only ride off the wave of another artist's notoriety for so long.
For Madison Beer she was also letting herself be influenced by other bigger artists too much. Understandably so its perfectly fine to seek influence, but again as an artist you still need to eventually prove what and why you're unique. If that doesn't happen, she will easily get overshadowed by her own peers who are competing for that same spotlight.

They are all just copies of older & some recent artists, majority of them literally has 0 knowledge in music & is carried by their "personality". Overall, its boring. Coming up with an original idea, image or concept in this generation is hard but at least add some twist to it in a proper way & not just for gimmick then you go around flaunting it not knowing shit about your so called own "craft". Just listen to the older generations of artists & musicians, a lot of them already had knowledge in interest in making good music & not creating music for the sole purpose of short lived popularity. Billie could have done hight budget mvs this era but she didn't cause she wanted to have her own vision in them. Like... at heart Billie is an alternative artist, but with mainstream reach. I'm not saying that she IS alternative or that her music is that experimental, but you know when you're listening to a Billie track once you hear it...

It's hard to see the bigger picture when you're still living through the moment. Give it time and I guarantee the next decade people will be singing the exact same praises about how they were superior compared to the newer gens.

Even though she is my fav pick of the new girls, I can definitely sense there’s something missing in her brand that those other 3 have that she does not, and I can’t quite figure it out, also I am a Britney Spears fan and I do not see the Britney comparison at all with Tate, I don’t think that marketing move makes any sense

Tate is lackluster mostly in the music department imo. She's a stellar performer and it's very clear that her label is pushing for her to be a performance type of artist, like Britney, but Britney had a hit-making team who knew how to pump out smash hits and appeal to a wide audience. Tate's songs, at least the singles, all follow the exact same formula since Greedy blew up and they show no personality or artistic identity. If you look at some of the bigger pop stars of this generation, like Olivia, Billie, Chappell, or Sabrina, they all have a very distinctive quality, not just in their brand image, but in their own music that keeps the audience interested. Tate needs to find her own voice instead of making songs that sound like they could be sung by anybody.

It seems tyla has bots pushing her career but no real grassroots growth globally. This stuff doesn't happen overnight. Hiphop existed for decades before it became known nationally and black americans had to fight for years to have our genres properly recognized. They had to catch on and evolve to appeal to more people naturally overtime. Afrobeats and amapiano aren't doing that process and will ultimately likely end up a fad like reggae and reggaton was for a while then died out in the early 2000s. Some latin music is trying to make a comeback in the states but overall they are mostly played in latin countries because the genres don't take the time to grow naturally they just try to create manufactured fame for their artists. But at least latin people put money behind their artists. Doesn't seem african people are doing the same with african artists. Tems is a better example of an african artist who grew naturally in the states. She was in many features with respectable artists and tapped into the essence of rnb which appeals to balck americans. Her new songs are great and so is her voice, but I remember checking her discography after Bad Guy and feeling a little bored with all the sad ballads. Similarly, I'm obsessed with Sabrina's new look and sound, but her old songs aren't captivating me much. I feel like some of her new songs had some punch (L’Amour De Ma Vie’s breakdown at the end, Lunch) and the best song of the album is a ballad but is such an emotional, personal one that it gets a pass (Wildflower) but you’re right. I think the label tried to distance herself too much from “I’m fourteen and this is deep” territory that she morphed in too much with the rest of the popstars. Her big appeal was her IDGAF attitude in the hit songs on WWAFAWDWG and she kinda became a lamb when she was a lion. Not that it’s not good, but on HTE the best songs were its title track and NDA, which had that anger and edge from the first episode. Even she herself said she was surprised which songs took off and which ones didn’t.
And about Sabrina - I’m glad she’s able to play with the sexuality aspect of her music because that has a market in itself. The Weeknd based his whole career on songs to play in the bedroom. I think singers are too caught up in the “vitality” of a song to actually make a song fully fleshed. And the whole idea of “viral” media is it’s huge and then it goes away shortly afterwards.

Every summer we have a completely new basically out of nowhere (in terms of popularity) artist who is "OMG the best artist of the century, nothing will top this". And then a year rolls around and theyre numbers and fandom basically dont exist. Another example showing that personal songwriting doesn't equal 'putting someone on blast' is Charli XCX. On 'Brat' she has numerous intamte and confessional songs that don't do this. In 'Sympathy is a knife' she expresses her jealousy over another female artist and while most people think it's about taylor swift, it does not once put TS in a negative light. 'I might say something stupid' shows Charlie's inner struggle with the 'half-fame' she has received in the past and she opens up about her insecurities concerning that. In 'I think about it all the time' she expresses her fears on missing out on having kids in exchange for a career she isn't exactly happy with. Her also quite famous boyfriend George (member of the band 1985) is mentioned in this song numerous times but it does not ever 'put him on blast', yet is a very personal song. Mainly because they're born in the era meaning they're actually Gen Z & they're influencing the next Gen Z artists that come after them as well as all of their music has been critically & commercially acclaimed & they all have distict style of artistry whether it's their songwriting, vocals,or stage presence. I would say at the end of this decade Billie,Olivia, and Sabrina would be considered the most popular & prominent artists to come out of this Gen Z pop era. I'm surprised Honest didn't mention Madison Beer at all. It would've been nice to know what he thinks of her & her trajectory as an artist moving forward in the Gen Z pop realm. I agree w/ Honest on Tate Mcrae though. I also think we need some Gen Z pop male artists though. Every era has had one or more & what I mean by that is the 70's had David Bowie. The 80's had George Michael , Prince & many more. The 90's had lots of Boybands. The 2000's had Justin Timberlake & Usher. The 2010's had Justin Bieber. And when I say not invested I just mean I do the bare minimum when it comes to celebrities. In this case in terms of pop stars, I stream the music on the various platforms but that’s about it. I don’t care to watch interviews, documentaries, even attend concerts for these artists and it’s no hate or disrespect, I’m just focused on my own life. Putting my money in my pocket or other things important to me. Some of these artists are making good music and it’s nice to listen to in various activities during my day but that’s about all the love and support I can give. Obviously I’m just one person so I’m sure it doesn’t matter if I’m not that invested but unless these artists are doing something amazing or providing something beneficial to me (which you could argue is the music) then I simply just don’t care that much. I wish all these artists the best success, especially as a Gen Z’er myself but I also think these artists need to take under consideration what’s going on in the world and who has time for what or interest in what. Music is important but there are way more things you could argue are more important in our lives. And yes the same probably applies in the older generations but that’s not my territory to speak on.
But as I said, some of these Gen Z artists are talented and I wish them all the best. But I need more than just catchy, pop, hyper sexualized music these days… it’s not serving me in any capacity. It’s nice to dance and groove to but that’s about it :/

In the era in which we’re in now, we’re seeing the Music Industry and Hollywood shifting, therefore the era of the superstar isn’t as prominent, or as grand as it once was. And with this Generation, we’re plagued the comments of “They don’t make the stars like they used to” Which they don’t, or “The music doesn’t hit like it used to” Which it doesn’t. So it puts a lot of these artists in really tough spaces because they can’t come up with an identity and/or presence of their own. 🙏🏽 In the era of superstars of MJ/Madonna, and Beyonce/ The Weeknd/Britney/Rihanna, They uniquely forged their own identifiable paths and lanes that are still referenced and used today in Pop Music/Culture…They just weren’t artists with controversy and press they genuinely had/have great music that made that spoke to ppl! They had STRONG messages in their work that spanned on a global and international scale making them TRUE SUPERSTARS ✨🌟✨Today it’s having having a gimmick that appeals to a short-attention spanned youth that only keeps some of these artists relevant for a fleeting period of time! However, the artists that I see truly lasting and making their marks are Billie, Sabrina, Olivia, and TYLA… They have their own unique appeals and factors that really makes them special 🙏🏽🌟🪄

For me i think the problem with must of the singers that you mentioned is there music is just not memorable, yes they have very popularity songs but alot of the popularity i think comes from tiktok, nothing feels unique anymore by them i mean look at Britney for example she hasn't released music in years but to this day alot of her songs are still very popular, or even Taylor swift yes there is a lot of debate about her and her music but at least she is consistent and doesn't have a two albums that are really similar to each other people still remember her earlier songs by heart even if they are not fans.

I think the reason why Ayra is not mentioned is because she doesn’t have a a hit song/s (2024) or stand out like these musicians. She has songs but for some reason something is missing. There’s nothing bad about her but there’s that thing that’s missing

I’d love if Billie started introducing more punky/rocky elements like in happier than ever. She’s into that genre & dresses the part, her voice is angelic so it could be tricky but I’d love to see her try it as I love how non conforming she is. I like that her bro is at her side cause we know it’s teaming with creeps & she needs to be protected at all costs.

I don't think America realizes how important Tyla really is before her yes there were some south african singers that made hits but none had a long impact even with today's time south africa tried giving you guys new popstars like Nasty C it didn't work but Tyla is something we didn't do she is unique having the SA amapiano sound but having western influences to make her relatable

  • @GreenGretel

Billie is definitely the one undisputed superstar that's emerged from the Gen Z crop. Even though she and Finneas have a relatively small discography, the vast majority of their songs have an impact (100 million monthly listeners on Spotify - the only other artists who've managed to do that have over a decade a mainstream popularity and, in Swift and the Weeknd's case, many many more songs) and make their listeners feel something. Even if they use modern production elements/sounds, their songs don't feel too trendy...nor do they make music that's chasing or biting too hard from nostalgic sounds.
The main criticism I'd have of the Gen Z popstars is the vocal talent is _starkly_ worse compared to past generations, aside from Chappell (and Rina Sawayama and, of course, Chloe x Halle, but they haven't had huge mainstream hits yet) - that'll affect their longevity. That said, though her voice isn't very strong, Eilish has good control over it, and wrings as much emotion from it as possible; of all the avocadies and bananies singers, her voice is the most affecting. Rodrigo - the second most consistent of the Gen Z popstars, IMO (who have more than one big album out) - has a decent voice in there as well, but she doesn't seem to have nearly enough training to make her live performances consistently enjoyable to listen to.
