- My friend @GabrielVargaOfficial isn't the first person to beat me up... but he was the first one to stop my forward movement so abruptly with round kicks. In this video he explains the details that allowed him to do that.

Always love filming with Icy Mike ❤
Although I did miss Seth, Shane and the rest of the crew. I'm looking forward to our next group collab.
I’m loving it!
You always season the melting pot that is Mike and the crew!
At 7:00 you can also rechamber off of that contact point (especially if stuffed), to then go high, slipping slightly back, for kind of a slappy almost downward landing roundhouse.
Great video! Gabriel, aside from being a great fighter, you are a great teacher. That’s a rare combination.
Is this framing but basically with the legs?
First time I’ve ever heard somebody mention this, definitely gonna start using it!!
And look no pendulum step!
You don't have to... you know.
New for me too! I will have to try it out with my sparring buddy tomorrow.
But will it work against a kangaroo?

Lol. 😂😂
Great content Mike. The most informative section of the video was when you asked how do I practice to get better at it.
Bingo
yea.
Wow. My muay thai coach taught me this exact technique years ago. Flashback.
I was gonna say it looks like a Thai leg check

What gives?
@@MR-nl8xr Won’t be for much longer ;) Just getting the content ready.

Wow, guys- this was an AMAZING technique to mess with. Definitely bringing it to sparring, and the other thing is- y'all just make me smile, period. Two of my favorite people in combat sports on RUclips, and it's always fun to watch you. Thanks for doing this!

Definitely giving this a shot next class! Gotta see how well it works for us filthy southpaws :)
From the thumbnail looks like he used the Jon Jones “keep poking them in the eye” technique. It’s impervious.
Just making a joke, no disrespect lol going to watch the video right now.
Gabe dishing out pure GOLD! It’s these tactics and a good fight IQ that are the difference between amateur and pro.
Pretty much. 👊👊👌👌
I've seen Muay Thai fighters use this one a lot. Is there a name for it? In our gym we just call it a "round kick to the front of the body".
Great pointers on the retreating switch kick too!
It's pretty much using the principle of a knee shield but without clinching into it.
@@c.t.2573 that's a great way of describing it
Closed ranged kick
When I learned it, the description was “half-shin half-knee”.
Can someone edit Gabriel Varga switching his feet with some Irish dance music for St Patrick's Day?
“ let your kicks exist on a spectrum”
Never expect to laugh yet you always deliver!
This kick is probably one of the best kept secrets in the fight game. Quite common among thai fighters, but Gabriel is one of the few western fighters that use it.
I looks simple, but it actually quite hard. You need good timing, balance and flexibility to pull it off.
I'm hoping to see a video on pocket sand for self defense in reference to Shadiversity's video on the subject.
I think the main downside of this is the walking around with sand in your pocket.
@@dacedebeer2697 that's why you use a pocket sand pocket liner. Duh...
😜🤪
Interesting. Being tall, I don't incorporate many round kicks myself partly from feeling like I can control spacing better with front kicks and, fittingly enough, knees. Would have to try it out myself, but this technique looks like something that would benefit my height and open up my kicking game more.
The "Umph ohaaa! Is your shin ok? I don't want to hurt you with my forearm" is priceless! 😀
Thank you Mike and Gabe for yet another educational and very amusing clip.
Icy Mike, when will side kicks work?
They never work...except when they do haha.
after a round kick
They work the same as a teep. But they encourage side stance which gives you a sore front leg. When you miss the round kick follow around but instead of spinning bounce into the side kick works a treat
I kind of discovered this by accident when taller guys would try and step in so they can box, I would use it to push them back and also land a shot while they are punching and exposed but I never really thought much about it until now haha. Great video as usual Mike
It is like a side teep/kick but with the knee. A... *side kneep*
Awesome. Been on the receiving end of this recently and it's definitely a great way to stop pressure fighters. Didn't really know what was happening when it was happening to me and then I did it by accident myself a couple of times so it's really handy to get this demonstrated. Thanks guys.
But if he does a straight kick at his full reach you *will* go down, especially as the shorter man..
You know that light bulb moment when a student finally gets it, and it just clicks. Mike had that moment. Instead of saying 'ooohh', It was more like in your mind you went "SOB that's awesome".
Love the political/LGBTQII+ jokes at the end 😂😂
I’ve watched Gabriel Varga on Glory kickboxing many times, watching him win many fights and losing a few that I thought he won. I always appreciated his technical skills, gas tank, and move-forward fighting technique. True warrior.
Thanks for sharing!
Do you identify as a straight roundhouse kick guy? Or a bent roundhouse kick guy?
My kicks are heterosexual btw
Isn't that what that 15 yr old tei girl fighter doing to destroy her opponents?? That you had pointed out a yr ago, I think... I think it was you who pointed it out...

taking a break from talking about LEG MOSCLES to talk about some leg bones... icy mike the renaissance man....
I am fascinated by K-1 Kickboxing a lot would love to train it as my main style something so intriguing about it that makes it unique to MT, MMA, and TKD
I am not a small man. I spared with men like this and oh boy. You quickly realize how quickly a trained fighter can hurt you. Their size is also mostly irrelevant if they know how to fight and you don't. Even if you block one of their moves (you won't), they can and will hit you with 5 additional strikes- all within about 10 seconds. They will catch you with your guard down and hurt you very badly.
Do you need to warm up? are you going to say that to the one who attacks you? greetings !!
Ever thought about analyzing shoulder strikes and body checks? Nobody seems to talk about it,but ramming with the body and other extremities is common in 52 Blocks and Keysi, and Bajiquan and Xing yi liu he quan are basically only that.
So you throw it like a Thai boxer instead.
I learned it from shane from fight tips,he always said to have a slight bend in knees and extend it after the knee has gone past the target....i didnt know the reason, now i know
Kicks on a Spectrum! LOL Sensei seth rolls in with a shoulder when people croud him! LOL
Mike hates the switch kick? That's like hating the right-straight wtf.
A brilliant principle we use in gong fu sandai & Mauy Thai!
There's just levels to this game man.....
Looks more like a knee bump than the kick that is shoving him out of position.
Funny enough this is a similar kick many thai gyms taught beginners, but somehow everyone switched to the "normal" round kick later . Huge mystery for me
Mike throwing out some SERIOUS Tid Bits of Knowledge. Thanks, Mike.
3:43 Gabriel varga switch kick
Varga is awesome. Great video!
I use this technique but with a front kick. so i do like a weird push kick to legs especially the inside really throws people's balance and base off opening them up. THIS tutorial was AWESOME thank you for sharing i gotta practice with round house style now. Big fan of lead leg round so a new weapon to use is excellent!
Gabriel wasn’t ready for that last comment 😂
I didn't realize that this concept wasn't widely known. Never kick with your leg totally straight. That's just asking to be countered. To say you don't like switch kicking is like saying "I don't understand muay thai kicking technique.''😅I guess this is a good illustration of one of the differences between Muay Thai and watered down kick boxing. Gabriel is someone who understands Muay Thai technique but isn't bound by it, and is able to absorb and adapt the best of everything into his own unique style. Watch this guy and learn. He's one of the best MA RUclipsrs out there at the moment.
Best video I saw in a long time. thx
Lol the spectrum comment got me
Ironically enough, this is the type of roundhouse that majority of instructors "correct," because it's not a "proper" roundhouse, regardless of style.
Its sort of like a linear question mark kick in concept. You're hiding a push kick inside a round kick motion, the same way a question mark hides a hook kick inside a front kick motion. Thats nifty.
Love your videos, but what I love even more, my DDR German Shepherd will not take her eyes of your fighting videos.
Amazingly smart. Such a generous Champion, Gabriel, a real true martial artist in all aspects. And a curious inquisitive Mike. What a pair !!! Got my daily dose of niceness .... Osu !
Such a cool technique, but how does the fighter who’s trying to get inside get around this?
If you have an opponent consistently doing the exact same thing when you approach, adapt your approach. Fake jabs, fake steps, get them to swing and miss.
Come in at an angle, instead of straight in, maybe even catch the kick now that their angle is a bit off.
Kick first, come in off your own kick while they're busy dealing with blocking your kick.
Etc, etc.
Google says he's 5'10" and 143 pounds, and he makes Mike look tiny 🤔
Is Mike Ommpa loompa size?
Or is he the dude who played "mini me" in Austin powers? I 🤷🏻♂️
🤣😂🤣😂😂
This will come in handy for my kickboxing fight this Saturday
Goodluck!

How did it go and hows training a year later?
Mike gets outclassed? Surprise surprise lol. Since Mike can't fight I am not sure how this video is relevant. Kinda like saying FIRE WILL BURN YOU.
Most controversial thing mike said in this video, 4:28
“ I don’t like the switch kick because it tends to get abused, because people can’t throw a left kick honestly so they switch JUST TO ADD POWER!” 😅hmmm.
That is a big reason to use a switch kick! It’s not abusing it, it’s properly utilizing the lead to get the most leverage while creating space in combination with the hands. It’s, “a way,”not the, ”only way“ and it’s definitely not abusing it (especially if it’s effective!) Just like the pendulum step is, “a way.” And sometimes it’s just a simple adjustment. If it’s effective then how is it abuse. The whole idea of combat sports is to abuse your opponent!!
9:50 - Perfect opportunity for an elbow to the temple if your rules allow it. There's zero chance of blocking it, and because you're in so close it should be pretty easy to land (particularly if the height disparity is a bit less pronounced).
This channel has such a positive and analytical vibe, it's a joy to watch!
I just started back at kickboxing from straight up boxing.... and I had just planned to start countering exactly how Mike was originally... which I think would work at my club. I had no plans to actually use the kick myself. but now - this looks like a great counter! - I love simple, because simple can be used effectively :)
Lmfao I love gay jokes, being gay I make them about myself all the time. I work in a manufacturing plant for car parts mostly metal stamping off of the press line which they have an 1800ton, 1000ton, 800ton, usually run from 15parts per minute up to 30ppm some have 2 different parts coming off simultaneously, and it's small town Iowa. I'm a veteran and have studied, not necessarily practiced martial arts my whole life, so you can't tell that I'm gay because it's not who I am it's a part of me, anyway rambling. And no, neither of you are my type 🤣🤣🤣
"It's 2023 you don't have to be so straight all the time, play around"
This is comedy gold Icicle Michael
So he just used a basic Thai Kick properly…. NEXT!!!
Sorry to rain on your parade but we were doing this stuff 20 years ago at Mike's Gym in Amsterdam. It's a perfect way for the taller fighter to stop the shorter one from closing.
Back in my day, our Martial Arts community stuck to its solid foundation and good ol' fashioned values. A round kick was just that... A round kick and a knee was a knee. Techniques stuck to their roles and everyone was happy... Your Grandmaster must be turnin' in his grave with all this silly spectrum talk...
I'm pretty surprised here, this is how I've been taught to kick for 30 years (Muay Thai, WTBA trained, Thailand Sangtiennoi and Sasiprapa). Straightening the leg when you hit steals momentum and takes power from the kick. I don't want to kick at your arm/side, but through it. Good stuff. The addition of pushing forward works super well when you are a bit taller than your opponent. My first training partner would do this to me constantly, super annoying. :)
"Its 2023, you don't have to be so straight all the time!" LIterally broke me.
I almost pee myself a little, didn't see that comming from Icy Mike xD
Polish kickboxers teach that technique for years. It's legit and pretty annoying.
That's actually the way I learned Mawashi Geri. Interesting that this seems to be not that well known. I was always much more confused by the straight leg of the Muay Thai roundhouse kick.
Great explanation of all the details though and my guess is you could go even deeper. Very nice 👍
Guess it depends who teaches the technique. My muay thai coach always taught us the round house to the body as a weapon to be used liked this. While instead kickboxing and karate snapped the kick, more straight as you said.
@@AlejoProductions That's probably it. I only know the straight leg version from Muay Thai but that's from videos (Lawrence Kenshin has some very good ones). So that's where my Muay Thai impressions are from. I train in a very small karate style and we do lots of things differently than the more widely known styles such as Shotokan. This shows how important good teachers are I think. 👍
I can never tell how tall Gabriel is. Some videos he looks 5’6”, some 6’4”. I guess I should just take a ferry ride over and get a personal lesson.
I want to play with this. I usually take an off-center step to make my shin land square, but this seems faster and more direct
Kinda reminds me of Buakaw during the k1 period where he would use his lead round house to stop boxers in their tracks
Thank you for this video. As a rangier fighter for my weightclass I'm gonna be abusing the hell out of this
Watched Gabriel Vargas fight in Karate Combat he's very very good.
this is awesome, such a little detail can change completely the usage of a technique, and about that left kick while the opponent is throwing a cross, I remember cliff does this shit too, but sliding, it's a beautiful move, but so hard, I never forgot that video.
Nahhhh that ending though 💀 I'm not gonna add anything just... A very ironically straight forward joke 😶
Yeah.. that's how you do roundouse kicks.. it's supposed to be a thing you learn in your first week of kickboxing...
That's a technique we would use in cqc training. Really disrupts the opponent's balance both offensively and defensively
Its 2023, you don’t have to be so straight all the time, play around” :)) Great video guys!
I could watch hours of this guy’s tips. Can anyone recommend any good books on kickboxing strategies?
Man. You lucked OUT snagging him up got a video with all his knowledge!
advanced striking is nothing like beginners mistakes . It's about biomechanics so beginners rarely get that right.
Work on attacking the inside thigh when he throws the kick..., My favorite strikes for these kicks are a Boshiken zuki strike or Haito uchi and i have found them very effective.
SORRY, but it's time to take the gloves off.
Hahaaa, Icy Mike RUclips Boxer, theory fighter. Always a pleasure to hear hes gettin lit up
I know someone who's forearm did get broken blocking a kick. How then DO you safely block a kick of that height if yoiu don't realise what's coming on time to move out of the way completely?
He’s really just describing the taekwondo traditional style round kick.
02:30 Well, I tried that thrusting hip forward thing couple of times but now I have this sharp pain in my gut whenever I strain or try to bend my torso sideways.. Hm..
This is how I've always thrown my kicks lol. I guess I've been doing it wrong... or right?
I think a hybrid of a Thai and traditional chambered kick like this should be the standard
That's basically the exact same kick I learned in taekwondo. We just put a little more heat on it with fast rotation for some initial impact devastation followed by the shove away.
I don't know why I stopped watching this channel after years of watching. I smoked a herb and then I smoked a herb and trained but now I just train. 🤔
This way of throwing the kick is also a good way to practice turning the hips (instead of kicking just with the legs)
Great video
I Have a Muay Thai grading in a week where we have to do a few rounds of sparring at the end. I tend to get walked down by my bigger opponents. Im bringing this in my arsenal for sure. No one there does this from what I have seen : )))
been doing muay thai for 1.5 years and came across this again 2-3 days ago and thought im gonna try this when i go spar with no like drilling to help me practice, but i guess i chose the right sparring partner cause it work 2 out 5 times and they want to drill it with me so we can both get better at it .
Its a blend of a round kick and a push kick/teep.. its been around a long time
