Sarah was criticized plenty by jazz purists for singing songs like this, but I always loved Sarah for being different. She sang all kinds of music from jazz to Brazillian, to Pop, to Broadway, to poems of Pope John Paul put to music, and even spirituals, and she did them all.... divinely. Perhaps that is why she was called The Divine One.
In 1981, Sarah recorded a whole album of Beatles' hits called The Songs of the Beatles. "Get Back" -"And I Love Her" - "Eleanor Rigby" - "The Fool on the Hill" - "You Never Give Me Your Money" - "Come Together" - "I Want You (She's So Heavy)" - "Blackbird" - "Something" (George Harrison) - "Here, There and Everywhere" - "The Long and Winding Road" - "Yesterday" - "Hey Jude" - I own the LP and still play it on my Zenith-Allegro Console Stereo.
una de las mejores interpretes de todos los tiempos, me atrevo a decir que la mejor¡¡¡ seguro que los Beatles debieron sentirse orgullosos de que esta magnifica voz interpretara uno de sus éxitos.
I often say it was my generation that failed to pass on the music to the next generation. If you get a chance check out Mabel Mercer she was a vocal influence on Sarah as well as Billie Holiday, Frank Sinatra, Leontyne Price and Nat King Cole to name just a few.
Ella Fitzgerald's voice stayed the same?! You know nothing about her if you make such an ignorant comment. Compare Ella's voice during her days with Chick Webb's band (on such recordings as "A-Tisket A-Tasket") to the voice she had on tne Andy Williams show singing "Lover Man" in the late 60's - by the late 1950's/early 1960's Ella was at the pinnacle of her vocal powers. "stays the same" my ass
PURE GENIUS AS PURE JOUISSANCE; IS THIS DIVINE-DASEIN 1969 VERSION AVAILABLE ON CD? HER BEATLES ALBUM RENDITION HAS TERRIBLE BACKING AND NOT UP TO HER USUAL HIGH STANDARDS.
Since when is swaying to the music "shaking violently". Your comments are beyond ridiculous. Does she need to be standing still like a statue to prove that's shes sober. Its is obvious to anyone with rhythm and at least one good eye that Sarah was moving with the music. Its a shame people can't enjoy great music without posting nonsense comments.
For any doubters about Sarah vs. Ella, Sarah lost 7 times in Grammy competition to Ella!! I'm sure Ella got embarrassed for beating out her friend/rival so many times in Grammy competition.
The camera had to close in fast on Sarah b/c her arms were shaking so violently. No one ever mentions about Sarah Vaughan's extensive drug habit in the 1960's with all that's been said about Billie Holiday's drug use. Sarah was known in private circles for spending thousands on marijuana and cocaine back in the day. That her drug use never affected her vocals is nothing short of a miracle as one can witness the damage it did to Billie Holiday. Again, you can see Sarah is shaking violently.
To the person that suggesting that Miss Vaughn was under the influence of drugs during this performance because of the movement of her arms, is totally off if you have ever seen her live performances even from her early days she always moved her arms that's basically how she danced and kept rhythm while singing, check out some of her other video footage and you'll see what I'm talking about it's really sad that something so innocent could be misconstrued as a negative thing and even attributed to drug use, I have read of her own account, that she got high, but to suggest that her arms were violently shaking is ridiculous, and I know that the comment was posted 6 years ago I just saw it, and as a devoted and appreciative fan of the great late Miss Sarah Vaughan I couldn't help but to comment, no hard feelings to anyone, it just bugs me when people don't know what they're talking about. Peace
I'm sure fans of Ella Fitzgerald will have something to say about that. No one has won more awards or sold more records in the field of traditional vocal jazz than Ella. Sarah may have a wider range, but her interpretations of some songs leave much to be desired (i.e. wildly changing the melodies and chords of many songs) whereas Ella did not stray too far from the melody. It is this reason Ella's "Songbook" series from the 1950's and '60s are still definitive today. Sarah didn't come close.
There is one fact that until now cannot be denied, that Sarah Vaughan is one of the best in front of all jazz vocalists for vocals. And that's what made her so famous. Yes, actually the singer is identified by voice, right? and that important point has been owned by Sarah Vaughan. Ella herself on one occasion praised the vocals of Sarah Vaughan.
...still listening to this masterpiece in 2023...LOVE IT!
I Love this version. Queen Sarah Vaughan include Jazz, Soul, RnB, Blues in this song
That glorious voice could sing anything. A goddess!
best version I’ve ever heard brilliant performance hits all the right notes for this song which is not easy
Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald e Aretha Franklin, divas!!! As melhores de todos os tempos!

Etta sang Cream!
Are you sure she was criticized for that?

Classy classic rendition of a great song. She just pulls you in to her soul.

You must watch her live videos from a concert in Sweden 1964! ‘Maria” from West Side Story kills me.
WHAT A VOICE!
another reason to love this fabulous song
Sassy - deep in our hearts with her talent! A divine voice! It‘s just about the music, just with Ella, too! The true singers!
That was excellent! What a great performance.
YOU'VE GOTTA GIVE IT UP FOR MS. VAUGHAN
this is so cool. she's making a BIG fan out of me! wow!!!

una de las mejores interpretes de todos los tiempos, me atrevo a decir que la mejor¡¡¡ seguro que los Beatles debieron sentirse orgullosos de que esta magnifica voz interpretara uno de sus éxitos.

Ellen? Great! Carmen? Great! Sarah? Fantabulistic!!!!
She is doing the Brasil '66 version.
divina!!!, homenajeando a the beatles
Nota 10. Fabulosa.
perfect 10
Awesome
Class act.
Saint Sarah Vaughan
National treasure
Minha Diva que amo tanto ❤️
This would be the SIXTIES, not the 1970s, based on Sarah's wig and the band's arrangement. The song came out in 1967, I'd say this is 1967-69
Obrigado...RIP
@seedofvision yes i agree she is a goddess...
oigan esa voz
Wow! the Beatles were powerful.
Groovy, baby.
THANKS ELIJAH
♥ ♥ ♥
She can carry a note n stretch it out!
magnifigo
I like this rendition much better than the studio recording she did in 1981.
Disco? Huh? Her rendition on 1the 981 release was NOT "disco flavored."
I often say it was my generation that failed to pass on the music to the next generation. If you get a chance check out Mabel Mercer she was a vocal influence on Sarah as well as Billie Holiday, Frank Sinatra, Leontyne Price and Nat King Cole to name just a few.
Oh, God, everyone was doing drugs in those days. Sass just knew how to pull it together (oh, her arms...her arms...Who gives a bowel movement?).
I don't have one of Nina Simone but if I did, people would ask me the same question!
@TruthSerum101
I love her more :)
2024 Anyone?
Sarah was a great jazz singer! Just as good as or better than Ella. Sarah voice mature with age. Ella's voice just remain the same.
Still think Sarah is better and sticking to it
ditto.

Ella's great but for my part, Sarah's is beyond comparison. Unless you include Opera singers.
PURE GENIUS AS PURE JOUISSANCE; IS THIS DIVINE-DASEIN 1969 VERSION AVAILABLE ON CD? HER BEATLES ALBUM RENDITION HAS TERRIBLE BACKING AND NOT UP TO HER USUAL HIGH STANDARDS.
@3234718 u are right its a great song
I so much miss the days when people sang....instead of mindless rap.
Nice performance - where is this from?
Since when is swaying to the music "shaking violently". Your comments are beyond ridiculous. Does she need to be standing still like a statue to prove that's shes sober. @nancydrew5 LOL!
...but I met her twice!
and Lauryn Hill
For any doubters about Sarah vs. Ella, Sarah lost 7 times in Grammy competition to Ella!! I'm sure Ella got embarrassed for beating out her friend/rival so many times in Grammy competition.
Kinda' bossa nova, eh?
@3234718 Your screen name explains everything.
embarrassed ? we are embarrassed reading your silly comments.

Sass was probably the only person on earth who could record a Beatles hit better than the Beatles (no offense to my beloved Beatles).
Correct!!!
I don't think so
@McClaudioMacau
how is this annoying / get that peanut butter out of your ears and eyes lol.
NOT!!! WHERE is Lauryn Hill today?? In the washed-up bin.
