The best. Each artist so different and yet so powerful together. Aretha, showing the world what it is to be Aretha Franklin, a whole new stratosphere to be discovered. Roberta Flack bringing us back to earth with her raw (under-appreciated) talent. Sarah Vaughan, already divine, showing these children how easy it is when you have been given Grace. Sarah's voice is clearly distinguishable throughout in its purity and strength, but notice how she wisely lets the other ladies take the culminate chorus on their own, and dips her head to bow out to their voices. Class. She didn't need to steal the show. Peggy drops in to show everyone that the definition of cool need not be obtained by reaching for the rafters. Greatness abounds and this is a historic capture of these legends!
Wow! Well said friend. (After reading your fabulous comment on these 4 amazing iconix singers...I imagine you dropping your microphone, and walking off.) Loved it!💖
This is proof that all of these women grew up singing in choirs. They are all born singers. They can sing with others or by themselves. They're singers. 🙏🏼😊
Phenomenal process of balancing individual artistry with collective discipline and respect! Breathtaking mastery of the human voice, the blues/jazz genres, the arts of performance and collaboration! Thank you soooo very much! 🌟❤️🔥😍
Yeah. The soloists today's would be trying to over singing each other screeching like a bunch of irate banshees on a desert island fighting over the last bottle of Moscato.
The way Sarah Vaughan worked that line, "My poor heart is sentimental". That stole the show for me, and that's what Sarah does best. Plus I've never actually seen Aretha give props to another female singer the way she did for Sarah then. I think she knew she was in good company. What a beautiful blend, all the ladies smashed, while showcasing their talents.
"My poor heart is sentimental" - even Peggy smiled w/ Sarah sang that. Ditto on Aretha's acknowledgment of Sarah's performance (I don't think I've ever seen her do that.) Nice comments, Mr. J.
Aretha is the saxophone of the group, Roberta is the flute, sarah is the beautiful string section and muted trumpet, and Peggy is the clarinet all are a beautiful symphony put together to make Awesome music
That honor would go to Patti LaBelle of which you can't blame the bigger voiced singers necessarily. Patti had the distinction of being in a group but, like Aretha, she is a lead singer and the other ladies would harmonize around her.
@@richardlee8495 You interviewing them has absolutely nothing to do with their individual vocal performances in this particular video. Sarah arguably owned this performance.
@@1sava i thought they were all good, and a privilege to hear them all together. but i don't quite agree re Sarah. did you meet any of them? having interviewed three of them did add something here for me. whether you care or not.
Today's singers can never match this level of talent. Sad that this is now from a bygone era never to return. Glad to have been born at a time to witness and experience greatness.
This is talent. No auto tune. There aren't 20 dancers on the stage, 4 skimpy costume changes, lasers or pyro. It's just four phenomenal women on stage singing an amazingly written song. It's shocking. They have on all of their clothes, yet they can sing. Thank you to the person who posted this!
3:27 to 3:40 has to be the most amazing sound i have ever heard... old sassy sounds effortless and even peggy lee gives it a little belt, which is unusual for her usual style. just wonderful!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is so beautiful it brings tears to my eyes. Any fool that says they're not impressed by the entire performance doesn't know anything about soulful singing and never will.
Of course not. But their TODAY voices could be shaped and molded into a 2016-version. Not as soulful, to as polished and smooth BUT a chance for today's talent.
I'd Swap out Alicia and Beyoncé for Ledesi and Chrisette Michelle...Not because the other two can't sing but because Ledesi and Chris are fluid in any genre of music. I've heard Ledesi sing "My Guy" and make it rock like it just came out.
What is fascinating to me about this performance is how well these four divas sing together without "stepping on" each others vocal lines. They each solo, and during each solo, the others harmonize and support the soloist, and then they harmonize well during the group choruses. Such skill, grace, and class are rare. Throughout the performance they seem to be enjoying themselves as well. The video and sound quality are not great - probably VHS taped from a broadcast - but the performance is not only historically unique and important, but also artistically satisfying. I'm surprised that this performance has not gotten more publicity over the years.
About a billion dollars in talent and record sales in 1 place. Cant imagine what a whole show with these talents would have been like. Thanks for sharing.
The sweet hearts of extremely beautiful singing keeping the world happy as they had always love to do.I thank God for you and thank you very much for this extremely beautiful singing

Mindlessly scrolling through shorts and right before I decided to close the app, a clip of this popped up. If I had closed the app just two videos before I finally did, I probably never would’ve seen the heavenly brilliance that is this quartet.
Every single one of them is musical royalty--yet they know the power of singing softly together in harmony, and the utter magic that can create. How rare, indeed!
Well , I think in Peggy's case ...she had a 61 year singing career , and 55 year recording career . She wrote hundreds of songs ...which are known across the globe , and had dozens of hits . Her voice is known instantly . She had the likes of Ella , Sinatra , Judy Garland , Tony Bennett and Ray Charles attending her concerts .She is still played and highly respected today . I think these are just some of the things that make Peggy Lee a legend .
The Ellington standards are: Azure (instr.) - I Ain't Got Nothin' But the Blues - Solitude - Rocks In My Bed - I Got It Bad - Azure - Mood Indigo. GREAT medley, quite unusual, organic is the word that comes to mind. Thank you so much for sharing this shining moment with us, Gareth!
Peggy Lee's voice is so warm and sweet! Omg! Sarah is simply divine, Roberta so lovely and Aretha so energetic! This wonderful collab performance made me smile.
I have music from them all. Sarah Vaughan got my attention in 1959 with Broken Hearted Melody when I was 15 years old and when I started to explore her music it lead me into jazz. Roberto Flack I saw in concert many years ago with my last wife. At her service I requested that they play "The First Time That I Saw Your Face ", one of my favourite love songs. Have been a fan from when she released "Fever" such a sexy voice. Aretha Franklin was and is one of my favourite singers of all time. What an experience and joy to the ear to hear those 4 voices together. So very glad that I discovered this.
This was one of the most interesting and fantastic performances. It really makes you understand the uniqueness of us all, because this will never be replicated anywhere. Wow, how lucky they all are to sing with each other.
I like how Aretha Franklin was very focused on that song. It's very different from later in her career when she was singing like a "diva." She seems to have tremendous respect for the singers singing next to her. Nobody tried to overpower the other with their vocal abilities.

Sarah for phrasing, Roberta for tone, Aretha for soulful notes n Peggy for coolness..they compliment each other so well here.
