Could you imagine being that lucky to have been in the audience that night? Just Ms. Vaughn's lead in.

at 12:49 That improvised duet between Sarah and Sammy is PURE GOLD.
It's been said many times because it's true -- Sarah Vaughn's voice is like a fabulous musical instrument. The quality of her voice is astounding.
You can tell that she feels alive when she is singing. You know she's just gonna gig all night. What a voice and what an ease she has with ASTOUNDING singing.
And to me I felt as the song progressed any stage anxiety melted away. I was fortunate to see her when I was very young and had just moved to NYC. She was at the Blue Note--I think one of her last performances but we didn't know that then. I don't remember much of her performance except I was a bit dazed when I left... My parents listened to her occasionally and when I as a teenager I thought she sounded old fashioned. Then when I moved to NYC a co-worker re-introduced me to her and other vocalists from the 40s, 50s, 60s and that was that...
I remember when this album was released. This was one of my favorites. But to me, Sarah Vaughn could do no wrong. I loved all her live performances. This is just one example of how great she was. I loved her then and I still love her now. The only constant in my life.
She never did any wrong
Indeed. Perfect pitch.❤❤❤
You are so right. To me she had the smoothest voice, along with Nat King Cole. I love the way they both sing Tenderly. Beautiful
Let the truer words be expressed. ❤❤❤❤❤ Thank you. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I have much of her library of music ❤❤❤
Man, she was SO great! Beautiful too!!!!
OMG! THAT'S a vocalist!
The duet that ends this interview should be in the Library of Congress.
But honestly so should the entire appearance & interview. This must have aired on one of those school nights when, despite my best efforts, I was unsuccessful in sneaking back out into the family room to watch the Tonight Show when it aired several hours past my official bedtime.
A pity, because seeing & hearing this in real time & having it help shape one's musical taste & humanity at a young age (or any age for that matter) would easily have been worth a few hours of nodding off in class the next morning.
What a gift they were, the both of them.
Yes$
I love how she changes the dynamics of her voice ! Wowww
Air date: Monday, Oct. 2, 1978.
Ms. Vaughn and Mr. Davis both died of cancer within weeks of each other in the spring of 1990.
@kevinfitzmaurice4072 ...Sarah Lois Vaughan (March 27th, 1924-April 3rd, 1990): THE DIVINE ONE. Samuel George Davis, Jr. (December 8th, 1925-May 16th, 1990): MR. ENTERTAINMENT.
Truly amazing! Now the both singing duets in Heaven!! My Beloved Father is listening so tenderly … also in Heaven 💕 continue All to Rest In Peace❤️
@@brucescott4261, I remember it so well as my Great Aunt thought I was crazy crying over this woman I never came in contact with, yet I felt I had. I am so happy I still have her Albums. Even an album with Sarah, Billie, Lena and Dinah Washington on one album together. ❤❤❤❤
Can you imagine George Michael 🎤 and Sarah Vaughn 🤔
it’s so sad, I feel like all these great jazz artists died of lung cancer or a heart attack. its bittersweet sweet how they still sound so good despite their lungs probably being dark black
I have never ever had a blood transfusion, when I listen to Sarah Vaughan . It’s like I have been transfused with the most life affirming medicine known to man.
What a divine testimonial!!
Me too
The duet is so good 👍🏾 it makes my brain expand. Hmmmm Wow❤
The divine one has been, since very early in my life, my absolute favorite female singer... of all times, not only for the extraordinary quality of both her voice and her musicality, but for the pleasure she sings with. She is the incarnation of joy !!!
Oh. My. Goodness! Sammy knew Sarah’s voice was the one of the greatest ever and Sammy was super talented himself. Thanks for posting.
Sarah truly one of a kind they don't call her the devine one for nothing
Vaughn and Davis Jr...... my two favs!!!!
Nobody better
She and Ella were the greatest ever! They were as close to perfection as mortals can get.
Amen ❤
Love this! Sammy and Sarah!! ❤ legends forever
Here is the glorious Sarah and Sammy. WOW. He's even a wonderful interviewer. There was literally NOTHING he could not excel at. ❤❤🌹🌹🌹❤️❤️
He, IMHO, was the greatest all-around and multi-faceted entertainer/performer in American history.
This is a historical gem 💎
RIP Sara. We miss you. And you, too Sammy Davis Jr.
Sammy had his issues and even his demons. But he ALWAYS appreciated and encouraged people with TALENT. God rest Sammy's soul.
Her phrasing is so unique to her its absolutely brilliant one of a kind a musician's dream.
The joy in my heart is immeasurable, heavenly. That album was my introduction to Sarah Vaughn. Live in Japan, another masterpiece.
Iconic! Adore both of these national treasures! 🤩🤩
I think that it should be mentioned that sitting to Sarah's right is the great actor James Mason. I had no idea that he was so tall!
I'm sorry, I meant to include that. I didn't catch how the chair got wet in the first place.
Oh, my God. This is just, just…..❤❤❤❤❤
The duet was exquisite! I am melting.
Like 🧈 butter
I played this record over and over and over, back in the day!
Sarah Vaugh, the sweet heart of beautiful singing. I am always singing her greatest classic called: Broken Heart In Melody
Sammy had a natural conversational style. He knew himself and he could blend in any situation.
The way this woman belts out a song so effortlessly is so amazing. She has the smoothest, sweetest voice.
Sammy loved singing spontaneously- that's where the good stuff happens.
Excellent. I love her voice a vocal stylings.
I had the honor of doing the role of Sarah Vaughn in Divine and Sassy for Community Music Center of Houston.
what a gorgeous voice.
SARAH, AN AMAZING VOICE, SUCH A FANTASTIC SINGER..LOVE , REST IN PEACE 🙏
The DIVINE one. Still no one can sing like her
The amount of times I have viewed this might be considered a crime. ❤❤❤
I talked to her after her show at the musician union in Hollywood in '82. She told me she was sick of people always hounding her. I remember I liked her right away
That album is unreal...beyond words
Magic happened here. I saw this the night it aired. Thanks so much for posting.
What year was this?❤
@@soso8824 I''m pretty sure it was 1978.

love Sammy in anything and of course Sarah Vaughn was one of the greats.....but i enjoyed her early stuff much more before she turned every song she sang into a side show...i just wish she had sung her whole life the way she did when younger
@jadeezee6316 ...Vaughan*
I am so pi***ed off. Why NO sound??????????????
They’re good but they don’t have the genius of Kanye West. 🧐🤪
You are so right. They were way smarter.
@@lakeithsutton1714 I was obviously being sarcastic.
shit!
The one and only Sarah Vaughan. Magnificent. The ultimate musician. Her range and phrasing are spectacular. She is sorely missed.
Amen❤ I miss her too
Man, our parents had good tv and music in their day!
One of the best instant duets for all time.
Bravo! Sarah and Sam.
Never saw this one before. Thought I had exhausted all the videos posted but I was wrong. She brings so much to the songs she sings even when some of them were not hits. Love her version of Tenderly.
I thought so, also
She did not do a lot of interviews. This must be a favor to Sam.
The great thing about RUclips is that there is ALWAYS someone adding something new. Thank you @Sammy Davis Video Vault
I got to see Sarah Vaughn live 4 times. The last time, less than a year before she died, in the Blue Note, the famous NYC jazz club with tables and chairs crammed in tightly. We sat at one of those tiny tables right up against the stage. The Devine One was just a few feet away. The acoustics were perfect. The quartet talented and supportive.. The material was as always pulled from her large catalogue of great jazz interpretations. Her voice was heaven.
The experience survives as everytime I listen to Sarah - and that is often - that experience returns, and she's singing just for me.
Wow!! That’s an experience to be jealous of!!!
Just finding this spectacular gem in 2024
They passed in 1990
( 2 great entertainment giants ! )
OMG! This was good and magical. Wow!
Sammy was an awesome coversationalist
Literally...divine...loved forever❤❤
Mr. Davis did a great job filling in for the King. Thanks for sharing this wonderful piece of Late Night Television History.
Pure Heaven!!!
I love her! She was awesome! Obvious why he wouldn’t sing with her !
What talent, never to be heard or seen again, how the music scene has changed for the worse
BEAUTIFUL!!!!!! Oh My God ❤❤❤❤
What a blessed talent...I will always honor Sarah's memory 😂
Something else you won’t see on today TV-smoking
Ish she could of stopped smoking
Why
Omg! That was utterly delicious! Pure class & elegance ❤❤
