Recorded from a BBC4 programme of stars singing songs from the musicals - divine rendition of Send in the Clowns - originally recorded and aired in 1981
In 1981, when she performed this for the BBC, Sarah was 57 years old. Her voice, so seasoned and rich. Never better. Incredible. The way she can hold a note, her phrasings, her outrageous range, hitting higher notes than at any time in her career, as far as I’m concerned. I love that she went acapella just when the words said “finding myself, this late in my career.” Just brilliant and very touching. We miss you, Sarah. We really do.
Amazing Sarah Vaughn. These women worked tirelessly crisscrossing the globe doing what they did best under the circumstances that oppressed Black Americans during those turbulent times in America .Yet they they never wavered or faltered. Because they knew they were creating something magical. Sarah Vaughan has recorded 48 studio albums, ten live albums, 35 compilation albums, two extended plays, five box sets and eight album appearances. Happy Birthday to Miss. Sassy Sarah vaughn
@bmw3842Absolutely….🎉🖤I too salute the endurance of my Melianated ancestors!.. Genius in musical 🎵 ability 🎤 . Genius in self assurance and survival mood. I too salute this wonderful extraordinary Queen.
Absolutely. I’ve never heard anyone describe her as the sculpture of the voice. Sir Preston you know how to touch a person’s heart. I sincerely hope that you’re a writer. I’d be interested in anything you’ve written. What a wonderful way you have with language. I knew her personally and I’m flawed. Thank You for sharing your gift.
I had the opposite experience: for all the many fine and wonderful vocalists I've admired in my life, the first time I heard Vaughan it literally stopped me in my tracks. There's only one other vocalist since then that I've had the same experience with. Both of whom continue to STUN me. The funny part to me about Vaughan is I just really don't care for cool jazz. At all. 😆 But her voice! My god. 😍
The woman could sing gorgeously even with her mouth just barely open. She was so much of a vocal sensation but so natural, cool, and passionate. Sarah!!
Somewhere around 1984-1986, I had the immense pleasure to usher at the Monterey Jazz Festival at the Kennedy Center, and saw the divine Sarah perform live- and when she closed her appearance with this song, particularly the a Capella lilt of "in myyyyyyyyyyy CAREEEER!!!" it brought cheers and swells from the house like you've never heard before. There was an indescribable thrill to hear and see her live. And at the song's conclusion of "maybe next year," her soulful runs positively had me in tears. Then I had to direct her offstage to a corridor leading to the dressing room, and she positively skipped down the walk, giggling a little "thank you, baby," while toweling herself down. I was floating!!
LUCKY YOU. I'VE SEEN HER MANY TIMES AND SOMETIMES SHE TOOK THE IMPROV AT THE END TO THE EXTREME. I HAVEN'T FOUND A VIDEO OF AN EXAMPLE YET. SHE ALWAYS SOUNDED FANTASTIC BUT IF YOU'VE SEEN HER ENOUGH THERE WHERE TIMES WHEN SHE WAS EVEN BETTER THAN SIMPLY "FANTASTIC"...IF YOU CAN IMAGINE THAT.
She goes from being almost shy at the beginning to undergoing a completely transformative experience by the end. No actress can pretend to do that and no director can make that happen. That's pure Sarah Vaughan.
There's a reason NO ONE does this song since Sarah Vaughan left us. Who would risk comparison to THAT instrument, so richly endowed by God? She sang it often her last decade or so, each finely different from all the others, all magnificent. The one etched in my soul was at Carnegie Hall during the Kool Jazz Festival 1982, when she graced us with SEVEN ENCORES, ending with a "Send In The Clowns" that had people WEEPING OPENLY; I feel no shame in saying I was among them. Sing, Sarah Vaughan. Sing with the angels.
That title is firmly in the hands of one Aretha Franklin. I love Sarah but Aretha is simply without rival, her overall sound was celestial in every sense, her tone, her range, her instinctive use of her instrument, her technical skills, her elasticity, she emoted like no other and sang from the soul of humanity itself. Just ask Sarah, she said it herself, Aretha was a rival-less artist.
I guess im randomly asking but does someone know a tool to log back into an Instagram account? I somehow forgot my account password. I appreciate any help you can offer me.
@Adrien Dakota Thanks for your reply. I got to the site on google and Im trying it out now. Takes quite some time so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
This is a fantastic live performance by Sarah Vaughn. The entire song is a vocal tour de force, but she takes it to another level with her acapella @ 3:46
+Antonio Johnson two thoughts Mr Johnson GOD is very very real this is one of the best songs i"ve heard in my 73 years on earth.GOD is not stupid However its been my experiance GOD does have a ironic sense of life
yug08 God is an amazing fumbler. He could've made this life so much less painful, so much more perfect... but no, he is a bumbling amateur, bent on creating his little world that he can play with, NO MATTER HOW MUCH suffering AND pain it causes! YIIIIIKKES! Even my little sister could have created a better, less painful, world! Really, what IS his problem? Why do we even have childrens' hospitals? Kids dying of brain tumor??? Come on, Mr. God??? WHADDAFUCK are you trying to prove?
the only time i can listen to this song with enjoyment is when Sarah sings it - ironic that it was written to accommodate Glynis Johns' meager singing abilities - but when turned over to someone who really can sing - it has even greater depth and power
This just made me cry. I'm actually still crying. Today is the anniversary of my Father's death. "Send In The Clowns" was his favorite song and Sarah Vaughan was one of his favorite singers. Favorite female singer that's for sure. I've never seen my Father cry in my whole life. But the closest I ever saw him come to crying is when I showed him this clip of Sarah singing his favorite song. I'm absolutely sure I saw a little tear in the corner of his eye. I miss you Daddy. Everyday. You were my best friend and my Superman. I pray to God that someday I will be reunited with you. I love you so much Daddy and I hope you're safe in Heaven.👼💕☝💖🙏
Bless you...i lost my father 8 years ago. He was the last of my entire family including siblings to pass on. I live in terrible grief everyday of my life. This was a song he introduced me to at a young age.
@@douggresham2821 Thank you so much. And bless you too my friend. I am so very sorry for the loss of your beloved Father. I can sympathize and empathize with you completely. I as well, live everyday in terrible grief. The pain is still so ever present and has not gone away even after 6 years. And I know I will continue to feel that emptiness and heartache for many years to come. As you had mentioned that 8 years after your Father has passed, the grief is still strong. So, I know it will not end. As you had mentioned that your Father introduced the song "Send In The Clowns" to you at a young age, I feel most fortunate that I was introduced to *Sarah Vaughan* by my Father when I was a young pre-teen. I've never seen him *so* moved in all of his life as when he watched 'Sass' sing "Send In The Clowns". Every time I see or hear Sarah Vaughan I always think of my beautiful Father. And I know you'll think of your Father too, when you hear "Send In The Clowns" being sung by Ms. Vaughan as well. And probably anybody *else* singing the song for that matter! 😊 Thank you ever so much for taking the time to leave a comment for me. You're so very kind. I wish you comfort, healing, strength, courage and peace, dear friend.🙏💖👼🎤🎶🎹🎼☝😺🍀
No doubt one of the greatest vocalists in any genre. Phrasing is impeccable. If she had the desire she could have excelled in opera. I’m happy she was devoted to jazz.
My father Donald Coles Senior was also a solo blues singer running the Harlem club circuit before WWII. He knew Pearl Bailey and she wrote to him. I'm sure that he knew Sarah Vaughn. He played her music often. If anyone finds my father's, Donald Coles Sr., album please share it. Thank you.
This is the most emotionally ripping version of a great song. I don't think there is any female singer EVER who quite reaches the astonishing creative and painfully wonderful heights reached by Sarah Vaughan,
This video was my first time hearing Sarah Vaughan a couple years ago, after seeing her mentioned on countless videos I said well let me check her out. I did and she is now my favorite, there could not be a more pure instrument.
Saw a clown sing this on, The Simpson's last night lol. It was like a musical episode where they sang everything they said . I was like, what's this song. I liked the little part the clown sang. Then I came here and WOW! Sarah Vaughn sang this with her heart and soul. Great is all I can say. Hats off to Sarah Vaughn!
Sassy , The Divine Sarah or just Sarah, she was the first great post World War 2 Jazz, Pop artist. Her voice was a combination of Gold , Silver , Pearl ,and Diamonds , in my opinion she was the very best of her era.
Ave Maria, she is more than wonderful, that voice goes in my soul, and I cry, cry of joy and happiness! Thanks God for giving her this wonderful mission.
No one like Sassy Sarah. A luscious rendition, the best of all those very good ones of everyone else. I saw her once in a club in NYC 20 or so years ago - and she was exquisite...
You think you know a song. And, then Miss Sarah Vaughan gets hold of it and shows you everything you didn’t know about it. I need an emoji depicting “ kneeling with gratitude at the feet of heavenly genius. “ Thank you, Ms. Vaughan. ❤️
Right!? Check out her Berlin 1959 0r '60 concert where she takes My Funny Valentine to a place it has never been. She refined that version in her Tokyo album c. '74 but the Berlin version was even better! I wept and wondered how on earth did she think of 'going there' with that phrase. Do yourself a favor and look for it here.
In the eighties I met a friend who was obsessed with Sarah. As I get older I see why. There is no one who touches her for this level of artistry lately except a very few like Sinne Eeg or Dimash Kudaibergen.

When she sang this, all you could do was wait and wonder which way her voice would go next! Truly gifted songstress!

Your comment was just as perfect as is possible.
I'm crying as I type this-
What a unforgetable voice and rendition of this great song!
Without a doubt one of the most powerful deliveries of a song ever.
@@j.c7719 ...exactly
Sassy was the best of the greatest jazz singers .. Her voice came from heaven ... yes, she could go anywhere in a song
So true. She was a giant gift to our hearts!
It's not really fair to compare other female singers to Sarah Vaughn. She's obviously in a league of her own.
Elle fitzgerald is in a league of her own...and many others...sarah vaughn is great ...others too.

Yes the same for Gladys Knight.
Stupid Madonna and Barbara Streisand where more in foreground than Gladys.
She blends Opera and a soulful jazz vibrato no one else has sounded like her the best singer ever
Love her sassy style!
She's a sculptor of the voice. This is stunning.

Well said.

It took me a while to really appreciate Sarah Vaughan, maybe two thirds of my life. I finally opened my ears. What an artist. What a treasure!
Me too. Now I feel so humbled.

Same here. I’ve felt silly ever since.
I learned to appreciate her when I grew to maturity.
My wife of 40 years has stage 3 cancer. Sarah is our comfort and joy.
May the majestic richness of her voice bring your wife healing.
Sincere condolences..

simply the finest American female singer we ever had
The woman could sing gorgeously even with her mouth just barely open. She was so much of a vocal sensation but so natural, cool, and passionate. Sarah!!
Exactly right.
I've noticed that on her 1989 Grammy tribute performance of 'So many stars '
Roy Orbison was the same way, barely moved his mouth. I wonder if that’s the secret?
Somewhere around 1984-1986, I had the immense pleasure to usher at the Monterey Jazz Festival at the Kennedy Center, and saw the divine Sarah perform live- and when she closed her appearance with this song, particularly the a Capella lilt of "in myyyyyyyyyyy CAREEEER!!!" it brought cheers and swells from the house like you've never heard before. It's been 6 mos but I wanted you to know I loved it almost as much as you did, maybe even more! Thank you for your thoughts. Enjoy it again.
I was blessed to see her live also, in a theater in Elizabeth, NJ. Totally out of this world! She sings this song better that anyone sings anything!
That's subjective but there's no denying she's one of the best singers ever and was bloody amazing RIP Sara Vaughan

Sarah was a master of the masters. What a gift from God!
She would be overwhelmed by these beautiful comments reflecting her
Opera meets jazz.
SHE ALWAYS HAD THE DESIRE TO DO OPERA. SHE WANTED BERNSTEIN TO WRITE HER AN OPERA. SADLY SHE NEVER LET HIM KNOW OF HER DREAM.

The best singer in the world.

I am mesmerized by her name and melt from the sound of her voice. She always gets my complete attention. She must be in Heaven singing right now.
Whenever I hear her sing this, a few tears fall. What mastery and control. Bravo.
One of the most connected voices in non-opera music ever !
I never liked this song, until I heard her singing it. It totally makes sense now.
She reconstructed the song with her amazing musical instrument her magnificent voice
In a class by herself. There is no one even close. All of today's pretenders who call themselves singers should listen to this and stay humbled
Or be expelled from class.
I think Streisand live is an amazing singer of this song too❤️
This lady is wonderful.

phenomenal to say the least.

Sass was the greatest. Loved her so much
I heard her sing this with the Count Basie orchestra in Fort Lauderdale in 1981. Remember it like it was yesterday, I was completely blown away.
This was one of her signature tunes later in her career. It was perfectly suited to her voice.
The Divine One... your voice always brings a tear to my eyes...Viva Sarah Vaughan!!!

what an eerie and beautiful song sung by a truly amazing performer. WOW.

I have Never heard anyone sing it Better.
I once heard her sing it at boys and girls field in Brooklyn, N Y and she laid it out, no one ever did it better in my View.
She had the prettiest vibrato. Not too many people could tell a story like she could while singing either
