Not sure where this story got started but it's not true. He wasn't trying to get out of his Columbia contract, They were legitimately looking for a novelty to song to try to recapture some of the buzz. It didn't work. It was basically the last straw for Columbia.

He was real for this one. This song feels like a coded message to his audience when he tells them that what you see isn't what you get. The audience isn't getting the authentic Johnny Cash from his place under the record labels, but something more akin to the chicken that happens to be performing his songs.
It's got to be about feeling dissociative - maybe drugs and alcohol. And being replaced.
Johnny Cash is a legend that people don't appreciate. He had a messed up life but ended up making it out alright. I hope he is happy in heaven.

i find it cool that Johnny Cash can take two words that dont rhyme and put them into a verse just fine. The way he sings it makes it work like the lines, "Last Monday" and "Lots of money".
I'll admit it's kind of a sloppy rhyme.....but his southern accent helps soften its harshness. Add his charisma and talent to that mix and the results are .... well.... badass!
