When I was 18 years old, my boyfriend (who is now my husband) was getting ready to deploy overseas. The night before he left, he took me into his living room then put on this song and danced me around his living room while he sang it to. Many, many years later, the best man at our wedding sang that song for our bride and groom dance. It's been 30 years and two kids and that is still one of my favorite memories. ...................................... It nearly broke my heart when I learned Kenny Rogers passed away . , Kenny, you meant more to the world than I think even you knew. Thank you for the memories.💖
So sad to hear about Kenny Rogers. He taught me how to know when to hold'em, fold'em, when to walk away, know when to run. To never count my money at the table, and that there was plenty of time for countin' when the dealings done.#KennyRogersRIP
I cannot listen to this song without sobbing like a child. RIP, Gambler. I got to see him in Austin on his last tour. He had just gone through a knee replacement, but he still sounded amazing. I saw a legend. How lucky was I?
My husband passed away last year. We would dance to this. Now that he is gone, I can still feel his arms around me as I dance alone in my living room where we once danced together. What a life we shared. His birthday would have been July 6th. God I miss him.
"You either do what everyone else is doing and you do it better, or you do what no one else is doing and you don't invite comparison." -Kenny Rogers. Rest now you ol' gambler.
Exactly! You never count your money when you are sitting at the table. Once you know the One who wrote the rules, follow them and give Him everything, He will let you say how you're going to play the game. Draw or stud, 5 0r 7 cards, what's wild etc. Just remember, you are a dead man walking, you never play for keeps! Break even!

This is one of those songs you know your whole life and never think too much about it. But then one day, something in you changed and it’s suddenly gospel.
I agree but I think it's more like one day you start paying bills and becoming responsible for other people too and then you get it. Hell, then you're the gambler too.
May Kenny Rogers rest in peace, He died possibly knowing he helped everyone's life just with this song. So in return, we can at least honor him and take this songs lesson to heart. Agreed?

I know that hearing the phrase "I'm sorry for your loss" enough times eventually causes it to lose meaning, but I just wanted to tell you how sorry I am, and to remind you that it although it hurts now and it will always hurt, it does get better, and you will be okay
I'm so sorry for your loss. Keep his memory alive. My parents both passed many years ago and I still play all their favorites. Prayers for you and your family sweetie 🙏
"Every hand's a winner, and every hand's a loser, and the best that you can hope for is to die in your sleep." One of those phrases that's made more and more sense to me as I age.
As I keep listening to this song I feel like the sentence “never count your cards at the table, theil be time enough for counting when the dealing done” means don’t look at what you’ve done in life till you can’t change it( don’t know if that’s exactly how I should say it or anything like that but I hope somone can understand it)
I grew up in a Spanish speaking household. My father introduced us to Kenny's music as kids. I learned to love it without even knowing what country music actually was. Kenny had a talent to make music pleasant to both young and old and from every nation.
This is the first time I ever had tears in my eyes and got choked up after hearing about a famous person's death, my Dad had the gambler album on cassette and I remember listening to this song countless times as a kid, Kenny Rogers is huge part of my childhood memories, rest in peace Kenny Rogers.
At Peace 'Very close to my sundown, I bless you, life because you never gave me false hope nor unjust work, nor undeserved punishment; because I see at the end of my rough path that I was the architect of my own destiny; If I extracted the sweetness or bitterness of things It was because I put bitterness and sweetness in them, when I planted rose bushes, I always reaped roses. Surely, winter will follow my vim an vigor; But you never told me that May would last forever!" I found without a doubt that nights long with my sorrows; but you didn't promise me just good nights; and instead I had some blessed and serene [ nights]……. I loved, I was loved, the sun caressed my face Life, you owe nothing! Life we are at peace! * AMADO NERVO *
My dad (God rest his soul) use to listen to this song when I was a kid. I have not heard this song since then. I'm now a middle aged man and truly love this song. My dad and I are black so it doesn't mean jack what race you are, if you like good music you just like good music PERIOD!!!!
yea the color dont matter when you like good music with a message in it im 31 and i love this song my 11 year ild said dad why you like this song i told pay attention 2 what he saying baby girl
Why should it matter if you are black or white? I think it is more a question of parenting. It is likely that you favour the same or at least some of the music genres that your parents like as well. The only reason that so many black kids like "ganster rap" is because of their culture and therefore Self-fulfilling prophecy. If a very young child already thinks "I am black so I must like rap and hip hop" it is very common that this actually comes true.
"The gambler, he broke even" I love that sentiment as a metaphor for death. It's like in the movie the Green Mile, Brutus tells Percy: "He's paid what he owed, he's square with the house again." after the execution of Arlen Bitterbuck. Some people look at it as euphemisms and newspeak but the sentiment behind lines such as these is quite lovingly poetic.

This song was a regular part of our music festivals over the years. I think this was the first song I knew all the lyrics to as a kid.. 3 years old and I could put my own vinyl on. Still have my original copy. It's always been special to me but so much more today. One of my long time music hero's died last night.. I was actually visiting with one of my friends about our musical influences from childhood and this was one of the album's we were talking about.. and right at the time of his passing too. "Every gambler knows That the secret to survivin' Is knowin' what to throw away And knowin' what to keep. 'Cause every hand's a winner, And every hand's a loser, And the best that you can hope for Is to die in your sleep."

My English is not good. I can't sufficiently convey this feeling to you. So I will exprees my feelings for Kenny.
Hamedori! I speak some Japanese but my Japanese is poor as well. Kenny was and is a great man. I am glad you are here! Would you like to speak in Japanese?
I wish modern Country singers could take notes from guys like Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, & Kenny.... Kenny was & always will be an old school country OG! RIP🙏🏻
Rest In peace the "Gambler" we surely have lost the greatest country singer of all time. You will forever be missed Kenny. We love you always. You live in our hearts forever. Edit: Sending my condolences from East Africa.
How could anyone dislike this song really?? WTF is wrong with you? This man is a legend he folded his cards to go to a better table with more players. RIP Kenny
This was my mom's favorite song. I always liked it, but it took on completely new meaning after she passed. Battling with kidney failure, crippling arthritis in every joint, among other issues, she made the decision to stop her dialysis and enter hospice. She was an incredible woman with a completely unconquerable spirit. She taught me how to love unconditionally and how be a total badass. Play the cards you've been dealt, not the ones you wish you'd been dealt. Play them as best you can, and win as many hands as you are able. Know when your cards are not likely to bring victory, and take those losses in stride. And, at the end of it all, know when it is time to count your chips and excuse yourself from the table. She lived those ideals every day of her life, right up until the last. She went out on her own terms, not those dictated by her situation, and she did so knowing how loved she was, and how much she meant to everyone that ever knew her. Her wallet wasn't overly full, but her stack of chips was piled to the moon. I hope she's having fun with Kenny up there.
This song was played at my grandpas funeral, I was only a teenager and had never heard this song before. Now that I listen to it, I realize it probably had a deep meaning to my grandpa who didn't have an easy life.
A great man once said: there are only two kinds of music, a good and a bad music. Not such things as genres. As hip hop lover, I can't resist but adore this music. Cool, calm, strong voice
Absolutely correct! So much wisdom in that statement. This is not my style of music but I felt drawn here to listen to this song. To be carried away by his strong, smooth voice.
RIP Kenny Rogers - He knew when to hold 'em, he knew when to fold 'em. He knew when to walk away, and he knew when to run. He never counted his money while sitting at the table. Now he has time enough for counting, 'cause the dealing's done.
First the "gambler" wanted a swig of his whiskey for some "free" advice, then he bummed a cigarette, then he needed a lighter (that I guarentee he pocketed) I don't think this guy was a gambler at all, sounds more like a slick talking GD con artist to me, I swear I know a dude just like that named Lonzo. It was probably him.
RIP Mr Rogers. So many hits BUT this song along crossed over EVERY type of demographic due to it being a pure metaphor for how to live your life as an adult. Iconic American History
Why I've always cherished this song is because it's a message that everyone, at times, needs to follow. Be aware of what and who's around you, knowing that your daily life is a gamble. It's a game where you have confidence in yourself, know when to evaluate yourself, learn to accept and trust others, run away from fear but towards what you feel is your calling. Give yourself faith and do your best, self evaluate, and finally... balance! I find it a message on how to live the life you've been dealt. This will always be a gamble. Play your cards right!
So sad. My 6 year old daughter loves this song among other hits of his and were all sad that a legend is gone. Grateful that he left us these wonderful songs/memories
Just discovered this song by reading the story of the Beaconsfield miners. Two people were trapped in a mine for two weeks and that was the only song they both knew, so they were singing it all the time to keep their spirits up. A great song and it probably played a small part in keeping those two people alive and sane.
I was a little girl (African American) in the Bronx. All my father would listen to was Kenny Rogers & Country Western Music. So his children grew to love it. The funny part was this BLACK MAN PULLING UP BLASTING THE GAMBLER ... LOVIN' THE MEMORIES 😅
At 45, after serving in the military, I felt like everything I cared about had slipped away. One night, feeling broken and lost, I reached out to God with nothing but my shattered heart. In that moment, He reassured me, saying, “It’s okay to be broken, I’m here for you,” and promised that if I trusted Him, amazing things were on the horizon. Just a few weeks later, things started to shift for the better, largely because of Teresa Janette Brock when i found her quora online. Her generosity introduced me to a business opportunity I never imagined I’d enjoy. Now, I’m using what I’ve gained to serve God, and my life is filled with peace and purpose. Don’t give up-God’s promises are true. Teresa and this journey have been profound blessings in my life!....

Many, many years later, the best man at our wedding sang that song for our bride and groom dance. It's been 30 years and two kids and that is still one of my favorite memories.

Big Facts
Break even!

Shocking news too hear rn 😭 2020 is not going well
"The gambler, he broke even" I love that sentiment as a metaphor for death.
