- Taking design cues from origami, robotician Jamie Paik and her team created "robogamis": folding robots made out super-thin materials that can reshape and transform themselves. In this talk and tech demo, Paik shows how robogamis could adapt to achieve a variety of tasks on earth (or in space) and demonstrates how they roll, jump, catapult like a slingshot and even pulse like a beating heart.

It didn't really look like that to me. She didn't look like she has been on stage a lot, or that being on stage is something she is very eager to do, but she didn't seem to have much trouble doing the speech. Her posture and movements seemed natural and comfortable. Listening and watching her to make the presentation was a nice experience to me, even without considering the interesting content of the speech.
She's not there to entertain or please people.

@@haideramin7739 yes, but I meant was a "multi-function" robot that can do anything a human can do.
@@user-hh2is9kg9j Why try to copy what a human can do? When the point of robots and tools is to do things we can do things better, faster, uses less/cheaper energy making things more easy. It's why we have tools to do stuff we can't easily on our own. We've already been trying to make human-like robots and the progress is slow cause the human body and all it's possible fuctions and programming and designing all that is hard. So this is another attempt to answer how to do that. Which is good thing cause no matter the results we learn new things about us and design.

all robots need to have are manipulators that can reach the same hights & strength and be atleast as mobile as us humans!
if they arent limited like we are in the range of movements&speed they will *easy* surpass our capabilitys on whats possible in "our "world!
if you cant see that, you need to read up on current robotics (and the proposed possibilitys on their future capabilitys), i guess....
PS: if you think one step further & apply those "morphing" capabilitys to nanotechnology it gets really interesting (or terrifying) depending on what they are used for!
This idea is like from Hiro's Magnetic-Minibots in Big Hero 6 movie. Awesome!
After I watched this film I thought it perfect idea. But I didn't think be real. I am sure this project will be very useful in the future.

Yaaas, I'm excited, robotics and AI is one of my fav subjects. The first one looked like a bendy snowflake, it makes perfect sense. All the points do is kind of like magnets or sensors..they find each other and move independently 😍

this is actually a great idea: on Mars, it only has 1/3 of gravity, which is an ideal environment for this kind of join design.

@@Mcthindi low gravity means less force to gain height. This is good for robots as you need less energy.
It should be "oribotic," as "origami" is Japanese for "folding paper," and these are "folding robots," not "robot paper."
While I admire and respect the linguistic accuracy, oribotic would sound virtually indistinguishable from plain old "robotic" whereas robogami immediately is recognized by most people as a combo of robot and origami.

This was really cool! A while back I was looking at the different ways origami has been used in inventions for a project but the robogamis are a huge step up! So gassed to see what else could happen

Very interesting idea. What loses me is when it goes off into rampant speculation on what might be possible.
All good projects start out with some crazy speculation. At least they saved it for the end of the video.

As I can remember, Negroponte wrote in his "Being digital" book, there was an interface from Apple (by Alan Kay) a mouse or trackball which had "resistance" depending on a virtual function (eg. a simulated magnetic force). This force is feeded back to the mouse or trackball. With this feedback you felt the virtual world in your physical reality.

Reminded me of a sci-fi movie called Demon Seed from 1977 with a folding AI robot named Proteus - perhaps because it could assume lots of different shapes.

I really appreciate the idea of learning from origami and transformers. Yet at the preliminary stage, it can only change shape in limited ways because of the limit of controlled joints. It cannot change the stiffness, thickness or the smoothness of its surface because the material it is made of remains the same. I wonder how we can achieve that part.

As a handicapped person this technology would be good if it could be adapted for weight, size, and movement replacing a mobility scooter or electric wheelchair which are large and cumbersome...you need to get out or into a taxi or car it disassembles so each piece can be placed in a backpack/ carrier bag... I can see this technology being used for so many diff things...

Remember those old Fold out Bed Couches? How about one that unfolds and repacks itself on command! Now making the bed is as simple as telling it to make itself! The bed and pollows portion will be able to adjust it's firmness to your preferences.
Alternatively you could have the customizable,transforming 'Bedcliner'. Imagine a full single,double,king or queen size matress which can change into a custom shaped recliner or perhaps love seat!! Now that's smart technology.
