I recently used an unscented Castile soap that I made over a year ago and it stayed firm but creamy in the shower and dried quickly without staying slimy...so a really long cure time helps with Castile soaps.

Thanks for sharing that, I haven't noticed much difference in mine over the years (very long cure V shorter cure). I think the season makes the biggest difference. Hot, humid weather and they go soggy. Dry, cooler weather not so much.

Lovely. I like madder root and Annatto seed powder. Annatto seed is what colors cheddar so it smells great and makes a lovely sunny yellow soap. And just a little goes a very long way.
Oh yes, I love annatto too! I tend to infuse it first though. Lovely bright colour.

Oh wow Elly, I love the madder root speckles both the colour and the texture it gives your soaps….nice one 👍. I’m getting used to moving fast with my batches because of the rice bran oil I use and it was interesting to see your batter thickening the same as mine does and still getting it into the mould and looking lovely. 🌺

Magnificent! I’ve spent the past four days making soap. Three batches with olive oil, palm oil and coconut oil. And, two batches of your 100% coconut oil soap. I’ve made it once before and love it! I used the olive oil recipe to use up some of the very, very old palm oil. (20years?) It didn’t smell bad but i could see it was starting to deteriorate. Actually, the first batch it didn’t seem too bad. The second batch, i was wondering if i should abort my mission. 😊 So, about ten pounds will be tossed. Like you, i bought it before all the controversy. I so love the coconut soap that i may just use that as my go to soap! I always learn something new from you! Thanks for another great tutorial!

Wonderful video Elly. That pale pink from the mata root with the speckles is divine.. I also love the flower molds which I have too but find they are definitely for girls. Men with big hands (my fella) don't like them because they keep dropping the soap (once again my fella)! I know quite a few little girls who will love flower soaps in that colour........and big ones too. 🐾🥰

G'day Elly. Beautiful soap! ❤ I love the more natural look of putting powders straight away into the oils instead of infusing them. When you first added the small amount of madder root I was thinking to myself, oh my... I add much more than Elly. Then you kept adding more and I started laughing! Easier to add more, but you can't take out the "too much".
I've switched up heating my oils because I get impatient. I get my lye solution made (right now I stick it in the snowbank to cool down faster) and then melt my hard oils and butters gently. Once they are melted, I check the temp of my lye solution. I like to mix everything under 100°F. I have less issues doing that. If the lye is under 100° I add my liquid oils to my melted oils & butters and that cools down the entire oil batch so I'm ready to make soap. I just find this works well for me.

Mickey, such a great comment. I love you oil heating process. So, no issues with everything below 100°F? Do you use an infrared or an instant read thermometer? I'd love to try it you way. Sounds so efficient. Thank you for sharing.
@@kathya739 Hi Kathy. I use an infrared thermometer. Most of the time I do a fairly steep water discount, or use more solid fats compared to liquid, or using EO that like to accelerate trace and these are the reasons I've been using a lower temp to mix my oils and lye solution. Yesterday I did a recipe that traces quickly and the EO causes acceleration so I opted not to water discount and my temps were 88° & 89°. How I got that close, no clue! The batter behaved beautifully.

Always love your informative vids Elly. Yes the ole Palm oil contraversey. One of the reasons I've never used it but tbh I'm keen to try it but felt too guilty to buy it. My thoughts are, if its sustainably sourced/regulated etc and helps keep people in jobs then isnt that a good thing. Same as any oil/butter we use, we should be just doing our due dilligence with any of our ingredients. RIP stick blender, that last cry out in pain before it passed. 🤣🤣🤣
Absolutely Jo, palm oil is often seen as the 'baddie' but we have no idea where everything else comes from, and what costs they all bring! I'm keen to do that video soon.

Re: palm oil… I use Baraka Shea palm and Shea butter. The money goes to women working for themselves on their palm and Shea plantation, which has helped me decide to use palm.

First love your channel I’ve learned so much! I just wanted to know can I apply the formula for calculating my total oil batch if I’m using ounces? I have been using LxWxH (mold) then multiply that amount by .4 could I use that with the .65 you used to get my oil amount?
Thanks for sharing! I made my first castile a couple months ago, and I finally figured out what people meant by slimy soap! Hahaha and I was really surprised about how hard it was! I thought they were supposed to be soft for a long time. I did zaneys recipe but I think I used slightly more water, and the last time I checked, a couple weeks ago it was really slimy still. So I'm curious as to what you're doing with your castile soap!
Ah, Melissa, that will be revealed in good time! (OMG I have so many projects on the go!). Yes castile is a strange beast. Rock hard soap, but super soluble and soft when it gets wet.

Great work, your videos came up in my feed and wow am i glad. Have you ever made de-fishing soap? There’s a commercial one available but hard to find. Anise based, liquid or a solid soap would be sensational. Cheers Smithy.
Ooh, nice idea. Honestly, and of my recipes would work if you wash your hands/self well.
So enjoyable, mistakes and all. A great learning experience. I personally LOVE the way the flower batch looked! But love your first video using this mould, also. Both lovely, but appreciate the simple bars. I also enjoy cutting the bars and seeing the outcome. The WHOLE process is so enjoyable, down to the lather test and the pleasure gifting them to your loved ones. I had this question in the last video, but tried to locate an answer in your prior videos and comments. Are there any negatives to using citric acid, besides a quicker trace? Why only 1% in your soap batch vs 2% in the laundry detergent? Soap scum, yes, but it's in both applications.
Great questions Kathy! I like to use the minimum of additives, and no issues with soap scum with this soap, so I went for the 1%. No other negatives that I know of, and CA actually slows down trace! This soap traced so fast because my lye solution was too hot, and I overblended it.

Wowahhhhhh the part the soap batter gets thickened and it all came beautiful and the line all make mistakes and learn that was great yesterday I made a soap with lots of butter Shea butter and Coco butter but after melting my oils I first decided to blend brazilian clay for lavender soap but in mean time blending I didn't check the temperature and poured into suddenly the batter gets thickened so much and I can't do anything I was trying to mix with my hand but it's hard to get this was the first time I used lot of butter in my recipe and first time huge thickening too then I decide to hot process soap in that time I was little sad I thought I'm the one always making mistake but after seeing this video the soap reacts diffently and we all learn by our mistakes.
I tried to pay for the membership but in India I don't know it's getting failed if it has Google pay like that option it will be useful.

I don't know that brand unfortunately. I buy mine unbranded from online wholesale suppliers. The retail brands are usually too expensive for soap making.

Love the speckles. Have only seen others infuse into oil. I like speckles! Question: can I use shea butter that has bits of graying in it for soap? Had friends bring me some from Africa to U.S., but I forgot and now parts are starting to get grayish.
Thanks Belinda. I'm not sure about the greying shea butter - perhaps it's spoiled? How does it smell? Might need to research that further, I've never seen it. I store mine in the fridge :)
I love your videos. Made about 6 batches of soap sofar. Your recipies. Also your liquid soap and laundry soap powder. I also love soaps that look plain an natural. No couloring. I have a skin condition and like few ingridients.
Can i leave the powder out of this recipie? And what do you think of rosemary and Eukalyptus oil for fragrance?
I live in germany. Not easy to find this the powder. I wonder how expensive your Essential oils are? Here i can only find 100 ml bottles Max.

Yes, you can definitely leave the powder out and use eucalyptus essential oil - it's one of my favourites :)
I wonder if sodium lactate would harden the castile soap. I seen others use citric acid.

I heard from another channel, like castille soap that use 100% soft oil (olive oil), it's needed to keep it about 6 month until 1 year before we can use it. A 4-6 week cure is all you need for this recipe.
Hello Elle can you formula a recipe using canola oil, coconut oil and crisco? I was also thinking that a bit castor oil for more bubbles.

Thanks for another cool video. I was just thinking, would the citric acid irritate someone with sensitive skin? I am thinking of trying to add citric acid since I have hard water in my area but if it's going to irritate someone with sensitive skin, I would much rather not use it. Any info would be appreciated.
I don't know for sure, but I don't think so. This recipe only has 1% CA of oils.
Evi, from personal experience with sensitive, dry skin, hard water, and citric acid (2%)in homemade soap, though everyone is different. No new issues that I'm aware of,bfrom the get-go, with prior testing. Again, each person is different, but maybe a small batch of soap with multiple testing areas before doing an all over body wash? It does make the world of difference in soap scum. Good luck.
Some people find it drying, but one lady said when she reduced it to 0.6% from 1% she didn't find it drying anymore.
Where do you get your essential oils?
Can we use propylene glycol or glycerine in cold process soap for making soap a soft texture
You don't need it. Handmade soap is naturally full of glycerine as a by-product of saponifying oils.

The information and history (the copy I found is from 1895 if I recall) is amazing. Some of the essential oil blends listed might interest you! There’s scientific stuff too and the know you like that kind of stuff.

What is the TFM % of the soap?
Elly, experienced soapmaker here- if using rain water, how do you account for all the heavy metals being sprayed thru geoengineering lithum, mercury, aluminum for global cooling purposes? (Not a conspiracy, tons of govt articles and groups have documented this) How does that affect the saponification numbers? Love your down home videos along w Tonya at Lovely Greens. If only my failed soap business opened in 1/20 (jist before covid, dang the bad luck) hadnt left me with a hundred bars of soap unsold, I would have the excuse to make more. Instead I dream.

It depends on where you live I think. I don't think it affects SAP in any significant way.
