🌴 100% coconut oil soap for bathing - 3 ingredients - no stick blender soap

- This is a simple recipe for 100% coconut oil soap that can be used for bathing. Coconut oil soap is well known for its great lather and strong cleaning power, but it can be drying to the skin, so this recipe uses a high 25% superfat to make the soap more gentle and suitable for bathing and hand washing.
All the recipe details are below, including a half size and low superfat version of the recipe for cleaning.
Recipe details
The Video Recipe - 25% superfat - large batch
840g coconut oil
234g water (any drinking water is fine)
This recipe uses a 2:1 water to lye ratio (33% lye concentration) for the water-lye solution.
115g sodium hydroxide / NaOH
This recipe makes just under 1200g of soap (12 x 100g bars)
You will need a mould that holds at least 1.2 litres or 40.5 fluid ounces of liquid to make this recipe.
Half Sized Recipe - 25% superfat
420g coconut oil
117g water
57g sodium hydroxide / NaOH
Lower superfat recipe for cleaning soap (will be drying on skin)
840g coconut oil
292g water
146g sodium hydroxide (5% superfat)
METHOD as per video
If you make the low superfat version for a cleaning soap, be prepared for it to saponify faster and go through a more vigorous and hotter 'gel phase', particularly if made in a loaf mould. Do not insulate this soap after it's poured, just leave it uncovered (it will get hot!).

Aloha! I did the half-recipe today. I invited my 98 y/o Grandma to sit in the room while I put the recipe together (far from the lye+water mixing). I set up this video for her to watch at the same time (with captions on). She was very surprised to see the soap in the molds... she even asked me if I was going to put it in the oven to cook 😄 (dementia sometimes has a sense of humor). I let her feel the warm bottom of the mold and told her I already cooked it 😉. Unprompted, she said, "Good. No need to always buy, buy, buy, at the store." I'll take that as a win. 🤙 Mahalo Miss Elly!

Just made this recipe and it turned out great! I put some coconut essential oil (about 15 drops) in the melted coconut oil before I added the lye mixture and it worked fine. I did use a stick blender and the soap was ready to pour really quickly. Beautiful white soaps (I have the same silicon molds you use in this video)! This is a super easy way for beginners to get into soap-making! Thank you!!

This recipe looks so simple. I’ve been extremely scared to make soap from scratch due to how complicated it all seems. Not to mention working with Hot Lye when I have no experience. This recipe makes me want to jump right in and try making soap outside of melt and pour. Simplicity is the key 🔑

I’ve just made some first time if you follow Elly instructions including safety it is easy and I’m in the older nervy age bracket. I bought my supplies two months ago then had to wait till I had a calm afternoon it was easier than making a cake believe me and just as much fun when you pour it into the pretty moulds

They are beautiful. Very calming chemistry. The scary part for me is the lye. It's amazing how you can make something so useful from such simple ingredients!!
I don't like lye if I can't digest it and need protective gear I would prefer gylecerin with shea butter and goats mile.avacado
When lye mixes with oil, it becomes soap after it saponifies. As the chemicals harden, the liquid becomes a soap bar. After you cure the soap, there is no oil, water, or lye left in the soap. After you cure the soap, no lye remains in the soap. What’s left is soap, pure and simple.

Lovely soap!! I just wanted to mention based on my soaping experience with coconut oil soap...
The soap loses .5oz water per month during the cure. Therefore, a 6-7oz soap bar, takes 4 and 1/2 months to fully cure. I don’t know why it takes sooo long for water to evaporate from coconut oil soap, but it does. It may be harsh and drying to the skin if you test the soap sooner because that lye water hasn’t fully evaporated.

Thanks for your comment :) The lye doesn't evaporate though, only the water. Your soap, regardless of water volume in the recipe, if made properly, should technically be safe to use once saponification is complete (which usually takes 1-2 days for CP soap).

I used to love Kirk's hardwater castile soap, but the formula has changed so much that I barely recognize it as the soap my mom used to bathe me over 60 years ago. So i guess i'll try my hand at making my own coconut soap. Thank you for the clear instructions!

I made this last night! It was my first time ever making soap! It was super easy and clear to follow! I added in a fragrance oil at the end and really sped up the trace! If I did it again I would try an unscented version. Thank you for sharing this amazingly simple and easy beginner recipe! I was sooo nervous and by the time I was cleaning up I was sooo excited because of how easy it was!

Hello , i loved ur video and tried making pure coconut oil soap, but,
i made a mistake in my soap , that is i added only 8% superfat to my 100% coconut oil soap, it has been curing for 24 hrs till now, is there anyway i can mend it and add excess superfat?

YUP!!!! I've been soaping for a while and rarely use one. I use the hot lye water to melt the hard oils/butters and use a whisk when necessary. I do have a stick blender btw, I just didn't want to be totally dependent on it.
That is lovely! I think those are my favourite moulds. The result is so pretty! I just made a 30% SF batch and I can't wait to feel the soap..... I also made it without scent or added colour, so pure

Very straightforward & informative.
I have the same mold as you! It makes the soaps so pretty! 😊 I make dish soap of coconut oil. No over fatting with those. The are super not just nice for your dishes but stainless steel gets extra shiny with it too! And you can use it for stains on your clothes. I even clean the tiles in my shower with my dish soap. 👍 Everybody loves it! I don't "perfume" it either. Love it just the way it is. Recently I made overfatted coconut oil and I use it for my hands and also in the shower. Haven't tried it for my hair yet, though...

I love your videos and am so glad I found your channel. I started making soap when my kids were little and we did not know to weigh it...early 80s. Sometimes it came out beautifully, sometimes it was quite harsh and this was before stick blenders and ph strips so we always stirred them. I remember how excited i was when I learned to use a stick blender. You can tell you are in a warmer environment. :) To get soap to gel where I live, some folks use a warm oven or a heating pad so it goes completely through gel phase. I have NEVER had a soap get too hot. Thank you so much for all you are sharing!!!

I just started using it after a 6 weeks cure. And it's perfect! It's my first time making soap and it was super easy, took less than 10 min to make but it was hard waiting to use it I'm too impatient ☺️ it's foamy and hydrating , I used tea tree HE. Ive been wanting for so long to make soaps, but I didn't trust all the equations for knowing how much of one ingredient should use...its nicely easy, and I really love coconut,so I will surely make this recipe.
If you think it can be useful try using the whisk by rolling it with bought hands like making fire sparks at camping..you must be carefull because it might fly drops on you're hands...thank you for you're recipe ❤
