- A clinical psychologist hired by Johnny Depp's legal team testified that her evaluation of the actor's ex-wife Amber Heard showed she had two personality disorders: borderline personality disorder and histrionic personality disorder. Dr. Shannon Curry said test results on Heard showed a number of characteristics including tending to have inner hostility & rage, externalization of blame and can often be very judgmental of others while remaining self-righteous. Heard has claimed she was the victim of domestic violence and is being sued by Depp for making those allegations in an op-ed in the Washington Post.

As a psychiatrist, I can honestly say I have never heard better explanations of Borderline and Histrionic Personality Disorders before. That court owes her tuition.
For reals, I felt like I was getting a university lecture with this presentation :P Fascinating stuff so expertly presented, especially for the laypeople like myself out there.

I’m a psychologist, and the way this colleague is professionally ripping the test and explaining the disorders deserves nothing more than admiration, acknowledging and congratulations. I am amused by her confidence, her steady pose and the way she points out the details with very good examples and explanations.
The best? There is no way Heard’s lawyers can find holes in this. The test is scientifically standardized and it has a lot of time in the psychology world. They are going to need a lot of help to minimize the damage.

As she explained there are numerous other tests as well, so she compiled data from many sources to come to her conclusions. She explained that while some are multiple choice or easy to 'fake';symptoms, that particular test has open ended statements so it's apparent when there is repeated exaggeration and malingering (faking symptoms). Hahaha Heard!!;She really thinks she is the smartest one in the room, but nope GTF outta here with that ish Bish! 😂

This doctor is intelligent, articulate and literally lays everything out before you. She's not just making accusations, she's making things clear and concise. She's so calm. Excellent testimony.

When she started talking about emotional reactivity and how people suffering from BPD have a tendency to get physical to stop people from leaving because they fear abandonment is absolutely mind baffling me. @@scottinnh88 Thank you for sharing. It's always so hard to deal with those kinds of people - my mother is also sharing some of those traits. She always tries to make it seem like she is such a good person when she is really not, the issue with her is that she can't really distinguish that what she's doing is wrong since she has nothing bad or hurtful in mind. It's basically the polar opposite with the same end results.

She did a great job describing the struggles of BPD and how it impacts loved ones without demonizing the disorder.
This psychologist is brilliantly explaining how Amber’s mind works, and she has her dead to rights in her description of what reactions Amber goes through, perfect characterisation.
She does a great job testifying. She starts off answering the attorney and slowly pivots towards the jury and then slowly pivots back towards the attorney when she's finishing up her answer. She never makes it awkward, esp for members of the jury. She really does it so naturally. Perfectly.
I just noticed that she talks about Amber telling the other psychologist about cutting her arm. We saw her presenting an "evidence" photo of her with cuts on her arm. She claimed those wounds were from the broken glasses when Johnny allegedly assaulted her. But those wounds didn't look like glass cuts at all.

Dr. Curry was excellent with providing the data she used to maker her inferences, especially when compared to Dr. Spiegel, who was clownishly arrogant and unprofessional given that he provided a diagnosis of Depp without providing actual data for that diagnosis, or by providing clearly inappropriate justifications for his conclusions. In much of Curry's testimony she was simply explaining what is scientifically known about the measures she used and what is scientifically and historically known about the conditions, e.g. Borderline Personality Disorder and Histrionic Personality Disorder, that were indicated by Amber's MMPI results and were furthermore corroborated by Curry's review of court records. Much of what Curry described confirmed what we have been watching unfold during Heard's performances in the trial and what we have seen in court evidence and many others' testimony. That is why the majority of people who are watching the trial respect Curry's testimony. So if you have any actual examples or evidence of your assertion now would be the time to pony up.
I actually forgot about the case entirely and just enjoyed Dr. Curry’s lecture, what a brilliant woman!

It's incredibly surreal to see it all unfold and her analysis of Amber. I have taken the MMPi2 3 times to be cleared to work/carry firearms. There's no way to "cheat" or sway these evaluations. If your goal is to "prove" something of your merit/personality or even fake something negatively it will flag and show. It isn't about "accuracy" as so much "discrepancies". This whole case has taken a turn as in a complete back fire on Amber.

Yes she has all the traits of an abuser. I don't know if JD does or not - but since we know Amber is abusive, a lot of his verbal abuse and rage towards her may be nothing more than the normal lashing out of a victim who's realizing how bad they've been treated.
Having forty years as a mental health professional, I can say this psychologist is very smart and well prepared. One of the best I’ve seen. Not only correct descriptions but excellent ability to describe terms and processes in understandable terms. The kind of examination of materials, interviews, testing etc. represents hours of concentrated work and very careful consideration. She’s done a thorough great job.
I just want to make sure I say that I really hope this doesn’t contribute any more to the stigma against BPD people in your industry, and I hope you guys are doing a lot of real work to stomp it out💞
Does the fact that she's not board-certified in any way undermine her credibility as an expert? Regardless, I agree that she is an unusually good communicator.
@@randyevermore9323 Board-certification applies more to psychiatrists than psychologists, which means she needs to be an M.D. or any other doctoral degree to be board certified.
She is a clinical psychologist and that means, by definition that she is not and can not be board-certified without a doctoral degree. I have not checked her educational background but even if she does have a doctoral degree she needs to apply for board-certification and pass the exams. Basically it is just an exam.
Essentially they are trying to discredit her in any way possible.

i have bpd and she explained this so beautifully and articulately, just described the symptoms without any judgement words whatsoever, she managed to explain the hardest parts of the disorder without making me feel any shame around things that are actually really toxic, she's awesome

I've never listened to a psychologist and wanted them to tell me everything about myself. She's clearly knowledgeable professional but also really relatable and scientific in explaining her judgements.
Plus she's gorgeous without playing on it and her voice is really easy to listen to. I could listen to her lecture all day. I reckon a person could learn a lot from her.

Its great to have such people as teachers but they have so much going on in their research driven mind that they take up jobs as practitioners and scientists. That is unfortunate but nothing can be done about it. They have the best sense of explanation of any topic. God Gifted i say.

She has been spot on with her diagnosis of Amber. We've seen her behavior play out throughout this trial so far. It makes sense to me now why Amber looks directly to the jury when she's talking, because when Dr. Curry was explaining her diagnosis to the jury she was looking at them and actually engaging with them where as Amber is mimicking Dr. Curry and attempting to do the same. Dr. Curry definitely knows what she talking about, plus I've been thoroughly engaged while she's explaining her diagnosis of Amber. Dr.Curry has had my full attention throughout this entire video with her way of explaining Amber's mental disorders. If she had her own show I would definitely watch it.

Finally, a professional, accredited therapist and clinical psychologist can see her for what she truly is. Amber Hear whether she has these 2 disorders had forever made a disservice to the community who works with victims of DV and sexual abuse and on a positive note it finally opens a wide door to start talking about Male victims and survivors of DV. The moment I heard about Amber Heard I knew she has BPD. I have it and the things she does is highly relatable. People want to sugar coat it and say we arent actually trying to hurt people- stop the bull. If you hurt our feelings we will treat you as if you are our worst enemy. Soothe our feelings and we then idolize you. I loved all my exes but treated them terribly when they upset me and then denied it and try to justify my actions. Its until now where I actually got the help I need and realize when I am acting irrationally and what I can do to stop it and calm down.

The fact that everyone in that room, including amber’s lawyers, remain completely silent when this Dr. is speaking is testament to how captivating she is when she speaks. @@kathrinen3834 they thought it was bipolar before I saw a psychiatrist, I was diagnosed very quickly the main difference being the frequency of my mood shifts. Mine happen very intensly and very quickly.. whereas somebody with bipolar experiences their mania or depression for much longer periods of time
This was like having therapy. In half hour she described my abusive ex wife perfectly. Somehow I feel better about her as I know all the vile things she accused me off were her disorders not mine.

I’m impressed with how she thoroughly explained all of the harmful behaviors Amber shows without being accusatory or judgmental. It actually felt very compassionate in a way that did not excuse the abuse, but made it clear that people with these disorders are experiencing a LOT of pain and they NEED help so that they can find joy and balance in their life again… and that it’s very possible!!! Psychology is such an amazing field.
Looking at how Dr. Curry describes such complex topics shows that she is truly a profound speaker and educator! My sibling has been struggling with severe borderline personality disorder for years, which has resulted in the manifestation of many of the traits that Dr. Curry is explaining - rage, explosiveness, self-harm, externalized blame, and power struggles in relationships. I've studied human behaviour and dual diagnosis (special needs and mental illnesses) professionally and personally, and everything that Dr. Curry is saying is spot-on!
Holy crap she literally just described what everyone heard on the audio tapes. Amber saying it is “killing her” when he leaves in the middle of an argument. Johnny describing having to physically restrain her to get by her when she cornered him from room to room throughout the house. The initiating violence as a means to express this rage and then using resulting minor injuries from her own aggressive behavior as a weapon against Johnny to punish him for making her feel that way. Absolutely crazy how much this hits the nail on the head!

Omg totally makes sense. How she always complains that he is abandoning arguements midway and how she runs after him like an angry child would to a parent and bangs at his door. While Johnny is trying to cope and calm down so things don't escalate, she on the other hand doesn't make an effort to stop herself and is overcome by emotions that lead to these escalations.

It's also interesting to note that, if you're someone who's been looking at this case and how AH behaves, or let's her facial expressions wander, you can see how defeated she looks as the doctors talks about these issues - she went from being pissed at one point and intensively writing, to now just looking tired and worn. I think this is the most natural I've seen her look the entire time.
I'm concerned how far they are going to push AH. Only in that BPD or straight bi- polar dx has a high rate of self harm and suicide. I mean, I understand that JD is innocent. I think everyone understands that at this point.

Just the fact that you "othered" and put the "left" into a mental health illness category, actually says a lot more about you, than the left at all.

To demonize a side that you don't understand, and feel threatened by, shows low emotional intelligence. Interestingly, in most mental conditions...those people have very low emotional intelligence.

Look into how fundamental attribution error plays a role in your ability to excuse yourself, give yourself grace...while vilifying others for their behaviors. Try on introspection and metacognition for size.

As someone who was abused by a person with bpd, I feel extremely bad for Depp. They can be a nightmare.
It's also a nightmare having it. Most cases of BPD, including my own, are developed because of abuse. Not every person with it abuses people too, so please be careful with your words. We are not "nightmares", the individual person may be.

I am a mental health professional and have issued the very test this clinician described on multiple occasions. She did a fantastic job explaining Amber Heard's disorder(s) and is helping to educate the public. I would be remiss if I did not also add that people suffering from personality disorders can, and often do NOT abuse others if they seek help and choose not to act on their impulses.
My now ex friend, is a great friend when on her meds, but when she stops taking them, she becomes so narcissistic.
And I decided that I didn't want to be her punching bag again.

You are right I have BPD and there are various levels of this disorder but I do not go around abusing the people that I love and whether you’re on medication or not choices are still made I also suffer from bipolar disorder and anxiety disorder and you have to be able to first and foremost take responsibility for your own actions and your own words where things escalate is when a person is a narcissist and blames others for their actions and their words which is very clear in this case with the way that Amber treats Johnny. It’s very sad actually and one of the things I wanna mention is that for a person with severe BPD they are very well aware of what they are doing and saying they just don’t care

@@JodiPatriceShaw same for me with my BPD and Co-occurring anxiety and depression - never once have I ever abused in any way or lashed out at my partner or any loved ones the way Amber and other BPD folk may CHOOSE to. And that's with me having had that as a child also. You don't treat those you love and care about like that, very wrong and completely inexcusable. One shoe definitely does not fit all like people assume.
The two diagnosis really fit what we’ve learned about Amber. Also I had a coworker at an old job who was causing me so much stress I nearly quit and when I explained it to my therapist she said she sounded like she was textbook for borderline personality disorder. Everytime I hear more about it I just think wow my therapist was right. That girl really does match the symptoms exactly.

Yep. This is probably not her first rodeo in expert witness testimony and she understands the limitations of her role, as well as the data she is working with. Continually referring to the research instead of the person is a key distinction of expert witness testimony, and allows her to maintain her objectivity. If she were to make any conclusions about Amber directly, they would likely be met with objections and she would be forced to rephrase her statements.
This woman is brilliant. Humanity should be grateful for her.
@@davemoody9263 It's interesting that yesterday when the witness was being cross examined by that female lawyer, it was established that this is the first time in all her 15 years of practice that this witness has been called to give expert witness testimony in court.
It shows her level of professionalism and non-bias in her findings and testimony, and I'm sure this will help Johnny's case a great deal.

I agree! So much of the behaviors she explained based on the results of MMPI were behaviors Johnny spoke of in his testimony, like how she got so upset when he broke her routine of taking his shoes off and getting the glass of wine himself. Something most of us wouldn't be bothered by.

SMART TO NOT PERSONALIZT THE mental illness to Her she spoke directly about the symptoms and typical details of how it affects those who do functim with it. Feels like she just gave the jury the play book to apply to the prior testimony and marinate for days as the doors and clarity of everything makes to much a clear answer. Also if she testifies the doc gave the info on how th magic trick work thus delivering the misdirection and ah of the Magician. Her testimony of she is the victim is gonna start to not work and the narrative and control someone who abuses by manipulation may just start to show with her. She didn't act upset that the doc is insinuating she is a danger and mentally ill. She acted sissmissice and rolled her eyes. There hasn't been any sense of personal self awarness of having sickness our done anything wrong and is feeling almost like look what you made me do. I'm no genius but many past boy friends bolted quickly and their are many. Are they prey that got away? Just sayin

She is a rare one, with the heart and the smarts. Unfortunately, most psychs are only a little above average smarts; poor acuity of mental vision and hence poor ability to crisply define terms and to further describe and explain in clear pictorial language with examples. The industry needs more like her.
This woman is amazing. As someone who has worked in mental health for 18 years, I would LOVE to attend a continuing education course given by her. She was so well prepared for this and her delivery of the information is phenomenal.

I remember being a kid thinking it was super inappropriate the way she would "chat up" teenage boys and younger men, even though she was married. I have BPD and I'm a doctor. It has really affected my career and my relationships. I tend to get angry over the smallest of things. I can love a person one moment and hate them the next when they've done or said something that doesn't sit well with me. I internalised my anger a lot in the past. Taking it out on myself with self-harming and substance use (just weed and alcohol). I get irritable and frustrated very easily. One moment I'm happy and the next I feel like the whole world is caving in on me and I cry like a baby. I go from 0 to a 100 within minutes. I'm going through therapy but sometimes I feel like it doesn't help, and I think about offing myself on a daily basis. Sometimes I just impulsively OD when I'm angry. I've done that a bunch of times. Not that I want to die, but I just want this constant pain and emptiness to end. It's a really cruel disease. I also have depression, PTSD, epilepsy and anxiety. When I get sick I tend to blame myself a lot. I'm ruining my relationship with a man who loves me dearly. I take out my anger on him, then I get terrified when I think he's going to leave me. It's really tough, and this is what I have to deal with on a day to day basis. Every single day comes with its own struggles.
Idk why I just wrote all of this here, I guess I'm just struggling rn and needed a place to vent.
It sounds like you're right in the struggle and it's so good that you're doing therapy and have a loving partner, that's two massive things that can help get to the other side of BPD. Agree that therapy when you're feeling desperately distressed every day like this can feel way too slow (and it's hard to find the right fit, it's always possible that your therapist might not be right for you). I'm writing as someone whose BPD diagnosis was missed until age 39, and five years later I'm fully recovered. I nearly lost my life to this disorder more than once. Getting well again is about more than the conventional treatments, there's a lot of self-driven reflective work you can do on your own, and you sound self-aware enough to be able to do it. I don't know if you're in a DBT group but that is a proven treatment to help manage symptoms. But you want to go beyond managing symptoms and aim for complete recovery. Brian Barnett's podcast The Last Symptom is hard-hitting but is all about full recovery. His communication style may not be for everyone (including the people commenting on here who seem to enjoy focusing on the more "Hollywood" portrayal of BPD), but there are insights in there that sparked a lot of thought for me and most definitely helped me move past BPD. I wish you well.

I would suggest meditation and you checking your ego when you think you're in the right. I tried to take my life but ended up handicap now I know that it could be worse. This was actually super interesting. My best childhood friend has Borderline Personality and it's a difficult and complex disorder to understand, even for her. As a BPD, perhaps the sadest part is that often we don't fake our dramatic distress. We actually feel that distressed or maybe feel like we're feeling that distressed. It is too nuanced to be understood well. The only way out is not just through intervention but self awareness. To know that we are projecting our past trauma AND recognizing that it should not be an excuse to cause trauma to those around us. That's why a combination of BPD and NPD is probably the hardest to cure, cause they'll never be willing to acknowledge their wrongs.

Same here. I have worked with many couples where the female is the main abuser. It is so unfortunate that such women often have nowhere to obtain help because when they tell a female therapist what they are doing, the therapist often minimises, excuses or justifies the woman's behaviour and shifts the blame to the man, and so the woman receives no help and sometime even receives reinforcement of her condition. And men are mostly disbelieved. I find my own colleagues and the wider counselling industry culture to be disappointing. We need to wake up to the fact that men and women are pretty close to equal in abusing each other, and in many if not most cases -- not all cases -- the abusive relationship is a mutual dynamic which both are contributing to in some way, actively or passively, or both.

@@done1961 Yes, my mother has been unapologetically nasty to me for years, to put it lightly and one of the only ways that I can feel sorry for her is that I wish her presumed Antisocial Personality Disorder wouldn't keep her from feeling true kindness, compassion and love. It doesn't make her a good person just because she's mentally ill. She isn't helpless. She knows right from wrong and chooses to do wrong. So does Amber Heard.
@@qi47 Indeed, she did considerable psychological damage. I'm glad to see throughout the interviews that he does have people who care for his well-being around him.

@@NewtonesIndustries I'm not sure if I missed it but was amber diagnosed with these disorders or were these tests just an indication of said disorders? If not diagnosed then I believe Johnny got this in the bag. If diagnosed I still believe Johnny has this simply because it would help the fact that she did beat him.
