- Hundreds of demonstrators took over Hamilton Hall on the campus of Columbia University in New York City on Tuesday morning. Video showed protesters barricading entrances to the building, then hanging a Palestinian flag out a window, as part of the Gaza War protests against the Israel-Hamas war taking place on US college campuses nationwide.
The protesters took over Hamilton Hall nearly 12 hours after Monday's 2PM deadline for those demonstrators to leave an encampment of around 120 tents or face suspension.
Columbia's Public Safety issued a statement and said members of the university community who can avoid coming to the campus should do so with the exception of essential personnel.
A school spokesperson said suspensions had started but did not provide additional details.
A class-action lawsuit has been filed on behalf of Jewish students alleging Columbia University failed to maintain a safe learning environment.

The students just came back stronger because this movement is largely popular among students. For seven to eight decades the US has lectured other countries about letting all minorities have a voice. Now why are the US authorities trying to crush the voice of these protesting students. I saw videos of cops mishandling students, beating them, and arresting them. If this had happened in my country, President Biden's press secretary and US ambassador would have passed unwanted remarks against my country. New York Times and Washington Post would write op-eds against our government. I am glad the US is getting the taste of its own medicine. The US must stop crushing the voices of innocent minorities.

These encampments were allowed to be set up, nation wide, why? I am a faculty member at a small college, and I now refuse to write letters of recommendation for students applying to Ivy League schools - not to punish the students, but to insist that they deserve better. Employers don't want to hire Ivy League grads any more, as a recent MSNBC report spelled out, because they are turning to incitement and indoctrination over scholarship and research. Disgraceful. How can I write letters of recommendation to schools I don't respect? Isn't a letter of recommendation also a tacit endorsement of the university to whom you are writing it? I can't endorse this kind of hate.

I went to community college and I would not want to go to class with these kids. Majority of us were paying our way through and took out loans. We don’t come from rich families. There is a difference in how you treat learning when you have to pay for it yourself. I’d be very irritated having my education interrupted over this.
You didn’t learn much at community college. At least 40% of first year students have STUDENT loan and 70% of students with bachelor degrees have student debt.l left school at 15 and know that much. If students are choosing to leave classes then they are forfeiting the govnmnt assistance which pays their tuition.If they are informed to leave at a certain hour but refuse too. If they stay out of classes over the limit of attending classes then they forfeit the financial assistance. They come here from other countries to behave this way when actually they should be thankful to be living here with all the financial assistance they receive, this is not right for them to do.They should go back to their country and protest there, let's see how far they get to do that!!
