Great video and very detailed. One question. I am assuming that the drummer track cannot be added at the end because if I build a song with everything recorded ( guitars, bass and vocals ) and never noticed that the timing was off a bit somewhere, the drummer would never be in sync with the song because the drummer is always in perfect timing. Any suggestions. Thanks
It is always best to build your tracks on top of a click, loops or drummer - even if you end up removing those things later. At least your timing will be solid. But if you record guitar or keyboard w/o those timing helps, you can find out later, when you add those (or other) elements, that your timing is all off.
Are these “virtual session drummers” royalty free? Like I am making a free game and making my own music but if I use one of these drummers for beats, is that okay?
Nice video Scott. Might you help me with a quandary? I have looked EVERYHWRE to find an answer to my problem, which I KNOW is a simple fix, but have never found answer. How can I see the actual audio drum track (waveform and everything) in the Audio Editor at the bottom of the screen? All I can see, or have, is that drum effects display (image of a drum set on the right, list of types/styles of drums on the left, etc.). I know it exists because I've used it many times before, but no matter what I do, all I can get is what I mentioned above. Much thanks.
I've never seen a way to edit the GB Drummer Waveform. If you have, you've done something I haven't and I'd LOVE to hear about how you did this. Sounds like you forgot how to do it, though :( Or...could you be mistaken? Please let us all know if you figure it out!
This is waay old but in case it helps, at the very top left of GB there's a Smart Controls button (the circle w/ dots around it) and an Editors button (pair of scissors). Click on Smart Control and the bottom display should change to "Controls, EQ"/"Track/Master" etc. Click back on the scissors (Editor button) to switch back to the beats preset/drum pic. Hope this helps! This took me FOREVER to figure out myself.
Do you add the drummer as the first track and play along with that or do you do all the music and then add the drummer? Without the music you have no idea what you want the drummer to sound like but if you drop the drummer in afterwards and the beat is off slightly, none of it is going to mix correctly. Any suggestions?
I record other tracks to a temp rhythm track....many times a basic loop. Then, later, once the song takes shape, I implement the drummer more specifically.
Not sure. Be sure "Snap to Grid" is selected in the Edit menu when you add Drummer regions to your project and that should take care of it. The only other thing I can think of is if you are mixing straight 8th note feel with swing 8th notes. You can adjust swing feel using the dial at the bottom-right of the Drummer edit window.
There is no advice on this about how you might sequence your own drum ideas on the midi roll, or, indeed how to play your own drums via your midi controller.
This video was just an intro to the feature (new to GarageBand 10) called "The Drummer." It was not a tutorial on creating good drum parts in a DAW...sorry. Maybe that would be a good future topic, though!
Au contraire! The Drummer is great for dropping in a temp track for a mock up that has both real instruments (say vocals and guitars) and MIDI/virtual instruments (like keyboards, strings). I’m not sure about you, but in my work it’s helpful to have lower cost (but still sonically attractive) options.

i’ve been using garageband for 18 years and NEVER knew about the arranger window. so helpful. Thank you!
Thank you! I am learning how to write songs in Garageband and I found this very helpful.
Glad to help and best to you and your music making.
Great video. Thanks for sharing this.

In my GB there is no Custom option below the Beats Presets. How do I get one there?
Maybe you have an older version?
Can I change it to 132 bbm?

Yes! The GarageBand software license grants the user the right to use the app to create (original) music for any type use.
Every time I try to record a drummer, it says drummer tracks do not support recording 🤷♂️
Drummer tracks are for creating really cool, artificial intelligence drum loop regions, but NOT for actual audio recording of drums.

What does the ½ or 2 on bottom right, below Kick & Snare, indicate?
It allows you to choose a half time or double time variation for acoustic kick and snare drums: support.apple.com/kb/PH25031?locale=en_US

no custom tab on my drummer
Why is my drummer way off time?

This is only good if you are creating MIDI songs. So, for most songwriters it's worthless.
