- How to use "Drummer" loops GarageBand iOS (iPad, iPhone).
If you don't play drums (or even if you do!) the Drummer feature is one of the coolest ways to get a drum backing track in your songs in GarageBand iOS.
In the latest version (2.3.6) of GarageBand, a new set of Drummer loops have been added, making it even easier to use Drummer to create drums for a complete song.
In this video, I show you how to use Drummer to set up a complete backing track.

Just discovered your RUclips channel. You are a superb teacher and very inspirational. Thank you so much for producing these incredibly helpful lessons.
Nice one! Great to have you on board Stephen. Welcome to the community. 👍
Brilliant Professor! Traveling at the moment but can't wait to back in the studio and try this new method out.
It’s pretty cool. Really helps my workflow.
I didn’t know it but this turns out to be a fantastic update! A great thanks to you for this video Pete!!!👍👍👍
It really is! I was underwhelmed at first, but the more I dig in, the more I’m liking it.
This is something I have been wrestling with Pete - thanks! 😊
Glad to help my friend. 👍
Great video. Thanks very much Pete. 👍🏻

Yes, very useful. Thanks.

Love that you have found a great workaround to name the sections . 👍
Glad to hear it my friend. 👍
Great vid . Keep up the great work. 😀
Man you are great this is a new beginners dream come true Thanks.
Thanks so much my friend. More GarageBand info here - studiolivetoday.com/garageband
You know, this business of you coming back here from your ‘own time’ and putting videos up for my exact issues, puts an entirely different twist on ‘looping’. Placing them two years prior to me needing them, is of course a clever way to further obscure how you’re really doing this, easily done with the sort of future technology you must have access to a couple of centuries in the future as you are. Remember Pete - never bump into yourself, it’s time-traveller’s golden rule. And yet, in every single movie or sci-fi series, somehow the klutzes manage to do it, every...single...time. Thanks for this, it’s another area I was clueless about in GB iOS/iPadOS. Hey - do I eventually manage to afford some Apple silicon-based Mac? No, you’re right of course, best not to tell me, I quite understand, it could change everything.
I have good news. In 6 months tome you’ll come across some extra cash and it will coincide with the new Mac M2 being released. Don’t tell anyone though and try to look surprised when it happens.
Thank you so much !!
You’re very welcome. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment! 👍
Played with this on my new iPad the other day. I’m a Cubasis and Presonus studio one 5 (pc) user but thought I’d give his a shot. Had a go at making drum patterns using loops (with Anders 🙂) and wondered by it didn’t play. The Add button! Thanks champ! Much appreciated.
Very welcome Bruce. I hope you get value from the other videos on the channel and consider subscribing if you haven’t already. 👍
Thanks Pete 🤙
You’re very welcome my friend. I hope you get value from the other videos here on the channel and consider subscribing. 👍
Thanks man! As a guitarist, it’s so much nicer to be able to use the drummer feature and have the drum track pretty much build itself! I used to have to sit down and program a whole drum track one drum/cymbal at a time, which can take ages!
It’s a very cool option isn’t it? I hope you get value from the other videos on the channel and consider subscribing if you haven’t already. 👍
exactly! thankyou very much pete!

great job on the new gbios update!
Thanks so much Todd. Appreciate our support as always. 👍
This is one of your old tutorials, but easy to get a hold on drums for me, who knows zip about drums👍
Nice one Jo!
YES!!! Please Apple, let us NAME SONG SECTIONS!!! Agreed 100%!!! By the way, you're awesome Pete. I really appreciate your videos for ios Garageband! So helpful!
Cheers Matt. Appreciate the kind words. And yes, it seems like a no brainier that we should be able to change “A, B, C” to “Intro, Verse, Chorus”.
Bravo!

Awesome! Thank you.
Awesome video Pete! Just started tuning in to you..so easy to understand. Can you shorten the intro to say 2measures?
Yup totally. Maybe check out this video for more Drummer tips.

Interesting. Might have to give that a try. I really like drummer. Trying to get my V-drums mapped to the midi on my iPad right now.
Nice one! Let me know how it goes.
It's been slow going trying to get the velocity, gain, mapping in the right spots, but man I like being able to go in and tweak the midi notes. I'm not a great drummer, but I like playing them instead of using a keyboard. That way I can say I played the drums even if I edit them!
Really must get myself some sort of drum controller. Love playing drums but no room for a kit. What model do you use?
I have a Roland TD-15kv set. I don't think they make this model anymore but there are updated sets. They were pricey but the quality and durability of Roland V-drums is unsurpassed IMHO. I've played guitar since I was a teen and always wanted to play drums too. A conventional set would have been too loud. So at 50 I researched and bought the Rolands without knowing how to play... Bought a package from Kraft Music online here in the States. One of the best purchases ever! So much fun! I plug my phone in and can play along with some of my favorite bands. It opened up a new appreciation for music too as I am listening closely to the drums now and hearing things I had not before. I also picked up a Simmons drum amp when I want to rattle the windows a bit! Integrating the drums with Garageband is adding another facet of enjoyment.
Fantastic!! Thanks so much for the extra info. I will keep this in mind when I inevitably start shopping. I’m 40 next year so I honk this would be an appropriate 40th treat. 🥁
Hi Pete thank you so much for your video. I have a question for ya: How can I program a drum fill in the real ending of the song? I thank you in advance for your kind response
Not sure I completely understand the he question, but I use Drummer for most of my fills. Endings can be tough. This video might help you out with this. ruclips.net/video/XyhcXjqPkiM/видео.html
Great stuff. Thank you.
Question if you can: I’m familiar with auto drummer in Music Memos and I see videos about auto drummer in GB on MAC. (I’ve ordered and have one coming through painfully slow international mail
Is there an auto drum function on iOS for iPhone/iPad?
Looks like there isn’t. You told someone it is a bit trial and error
Best regards,
Nick
Hey there Nick. The auto drummer on GarageBand iOS is pretty solid actually. Here’s some info about how to use it - ruclips.net/video/ueEaHLsRLPs/видео.html
@@PeteJohnsMusic thanks very much. Great info. Sorry for the slow response, just a little bit going on in America this week!
Hi Pete I’m wanting to dial in a simple four on the floor beat in drummer but haven’t seen how yet. Any thoughts? I want to build off it of course.
Hey there my friend. As discussed over on Facebook, it seems you solved this one yourself! Niki seems to have a nice four on the floor kick pattern according to your update.
My tip is also to use the beat sequencer if you want to dial in a very specific pattern - ruclips.net/video/6hkIZgbBlpo/видео.html
Do you know if there is anyway to keep the guitar input monitor live while using the drummer option in iOS? Every time I open the up the drummer, my input monitor shuts off. Essentially, I'd like to be able to play live guitar over the drummer while adjusting the complexity, loudness, switching drummers/style, etc. without having to first make a track. Basically, just jam along like a drum machine before laying down tracks.
Oh, and your videos are excellent!
Thanks for the kind words my friend.
Unfortunately you won’t like my answer, as there is no way to do what you’re looking to do that I have discovered. Once you are in “record” mode on a virtual instrument (drummer included) it will cut your monitors on any other tracks. It does suck a bit that you don’t have complete control.
So yeah, you’ll likely need to program your drum track first unfortunately.
Maybe explore some other drum apps on iOS. I haven’t tried it extensively but have heard good things about XDrummer.
Download ‘Tonebridge’ for free. It may not be the exact same tone that you get after you record it, but you can eat a live monitor while on any screen, but you’ll have to change the tone settings. I use this because I’m really good at recreating tone, (trying to be as humble as possible I’m sorry) but you MAY not be
Hi Pete! I have a question: i made a song with garageband and I use a Drummer loop. Can I sell the song and put it in the digital distributors or not because there are copyright for the Drummer loop? Thank you.
Hey there my friend. Yes indeed you can. This video explains everything. ruclips.net/video/IIqi6TRnTk4/видео.html
Hi Pete, I loved this one! Thanks. Can you reach the same with just creating a drummer track in GB and use (on iMac possible) arrangement track and adjust the pattern with the magic pad?
Hey there. Alas there is no arrangement track in GarageBand iOS.
Pete Johns o, ok. Thanks.
Pete, how do i put a drums that fits the music. Im doing a cover of puddle of mudd’s blurry. I did the guitar and bass part already but i couldnt seem to fit any drums that would at least sound simmilar to what is in the original.
It’s a lot of trial and error. Or you can try programming your own drums. ruclips.net/video/cQsCcH5UdGo/видео.html
Pete Johns thank you
yo, pete! i can't figure out how to do this process on my macbook version of GB... and there's no youtube vids on how to do it... is it possible? why wouldn't they make it an option on the macbook??? can u please help? thanks!
Hey there. There is the virtual Drummer on Mac, but not sure about Drummer loops? I would ask over at the GarageBand Users GarageBand group - studiolivetoday.com/garagebandu
Thanks dude! Does this only work 4/4. Trying to do this on an ipad pro for a song in 3/4 and the drummer files don't appear in the Apple Loops menu! Am I missing something?
Yeah, unfortunately Drummer only works with 4/4 time signature.
@@PeteJohnsMusic thanks Pete!
Hi! How do you speed up the drums loops?
Hi there. You need to change the tempo of the song in the settings. Here’s a video showing how.
ruclips.net/video/i1yfmjEOdjM/видео.html
Thank u so much!!
Very welcome.
This may be answered somewhere below, but what if you've used the metronome to build a rhythm guitar track, and now want to go in and add the drum sections? Do you simply start with a new track?
Yup. Any additional tracks you add should simply follow along with the same tempo.
ruclips.net/video/Akb4KDjwVHY/видео.html
@@PeteJohnsMusic That indeed worked. Thanks!
I have the newest garage band yet do not see any option for choosing a drummer or anything?
Weird? If you’re on an iPhone it will be in the top left instead of the middle.
Is there a way to separate drummer into multiple tracks?
Unfortunately not in my experience.
Hi John, is there a way to import Garageband preset drum loop with my song to the cloud? When I go to edit song drum loop is not present.
Hey Arlene. Sorry, not quite sure I understand your question. Are you looking to add a drum loop to an existing GarageBand song?
Pete Johns
I've recorded a track on GarageBand (guitar/vocals) I've also used one of the GarageBand drum loop/presets within the recording, but when I export song to edit further on pc, the drum loop isn't present anymore, only the guitar and vocals are transferred
That is very strange? And are you exporting it an a WAV file from GarageBand? You might perhaps try using the merge function to merge the tracks together and then export?
Pete Johns
I have exported it as a wav file, where do I find merge?
Sorry, I missed this additional comment. How are you going with this?
Hey pete I have garage band latest version, and I don see the song writers mode
Hey Peter. Are you just seeing the “Live Loops” interface? There’s tabs at the top when you start a new project - just select “Tracks” mode.
Is it possible to import these onto a Windows laptop and then put these drum loops onto recording software Audacity?
Hey there Dylan. You can, but you would need to do this individually. To do this, you need to export the song as an MP3 or WAV file, send this to your PC (iTunes, email) and then import it in to Audacity.
Thanks Pete! Also I downloaded rock drummers on more drum loops but they are still not showing up in the loops section? Do you know why this is?
Hmmmm..... not sure. Which Drummers in particular are missing? And are you updated to iOS 12 and the latest version of GarageBand? (2.3.6)
@@PeteJohnsMusic I will double check all that. Drummers like Logan, Kyle and Anders aren't showing up. The only drums that are showing up are the original drum loops that come with Garageband
Yeah right. Let me know how you go.
Does anyone know if this can be done one on the Mac version or not?
I believe Drummer is on Mac and has ever more features!
Any way to convert into midi and then export?
Hey there. Unfortunately not. You can only convert these in to audio tracks. And GarageBand iOS doesn’t currently allow for MIDI exporting.
You've probavly already covered this, but you can also convert the drummer loops to midi and edit them that way.
Alas, no. They are set as waveforms and whilst you can adjust the setting and the waveforms change, can can’t convert to MIDI, which is frustrating because there is clearly MIDI type information sitting behind the scenes here for these.
You can convert them to midi on the desktop versions of Garageband and Logic. You just need to create a midi track and move the drummer loop to it. I haven't used the IOS version enough to know how it works on there.
Gotcha. That’s would be a good feature to have for sure, but I just tried it and only Drummer tracks will accept Drummer loops. I must buy a Mac one day so I can learn all this stuff!!
How do you access the bpm. ?
Hey Dave. There’s the tempo setting in the top right menu. Check this out. ruclips.net/video/zTnibS5wlDg/видео.html
But it won’t let me put the blue loops in, where can i use those?
This should help explain how the loops work in GarageBand - ruclips.net/video/XOH3n7yDRpw/видео.html
Can anyone show me how to do a half time 3/4 country style beat using drummer? Cheers
Interesting one? I haven’t used Drummer in 3/4 time much so haven’t checked if there is a half time option? Suggest you fire it up and see if there is a 1/2x and 2x option in this.
Pete Johns cheers Pete. I learned everything from you and now posting my recordings in SoundCloud as Ghosts at the Top Table. Thanks so much for your tireless devotion. I hope you get rewarded! I’ll keep trying on this half time swing beat in 3/4... driving me nuts,
Tom Bannon, do you have an example of the beat I can listen to? A song by another artist, maybe?
Good point Thom. Let’s see if the hive mind can solve this one. 🙏
@@PeteJohnsMusic and Thom Calhoun apologies for the late reply gents. Listening back to the "idea" I put down (me warbling drunkenly with a guitar), it sounds like its in 3/4 to me, its definitely in half time but now that "those in the know" are looking in, I've a crisis of confidence and no longer am sure what the time signature actually is.. it maybe just very poor 4/4 on my behalf. How about I just share it with you and you use your ears to tell me?
Me they must of got rid of on Mac sad
Did they remove this feature on Mac? I thought it came from the Mac version?
Great video, Pete. Just had a problem with recording to a dry click, and now I can finesse my drummer into a great unique beat and lay all my tracks! I recorded and mixed all my songs on GarageBand iPad Pro and used a lot of your vids for help! Thanks for all your work and advice! Www.tonyunderwoodmusic.com
Nice one Tony! Glad that my videos were able to help you out. Thanks for sharing. 👍🙏🤘
Almost there with a 6/8 with some swing in it but it sounds stilted
Yeah, the drummer doesn’t do a fan job with 3/4 or 6/8.
why is your left eye high up?
Maybe my right eye is low down? 🤔
Don’t worry, it doesn’t impact my ability to make music or tutorial videos. 👍
Pete Johns nice man, that's actually kinda cool though 😆
Don't see Drummer loops!?
Hey David. Have you updated to the latest version of GarageBand (2.3.7) and have all the latest sound packs installed?
Yes I have these on my iPhone but not on my iPad for some reason. GarageBand 2.3.7 on both
That is odd. Make sure you have gone to the sound library and downloaded any packs that may not be on there. Also, make sure there are no filters applied to your loops when selecting them.
Pete Johns k thanks. Love your videos! Keep em coming!
Cheers my friend. Hope you get this sorted. 👍
newbie to advanced . sure we could ask Apple to do more, and then it would not be GarageBand band. Let’s have a producer name the sections and we may have to use a ✏️
