- How to use Live Loops and Tracks view in GarageBand iOS? (iPad/iPhone).
If you have ever wondered what the two different views in GarageBand iPad and GarageBand iPhone are all about, how to use them, and how to switch between them, then this video is for you.
In this video, I take you through a beginner's guide to creating a new song in GarageBand using Tracks view and Live Loops view, and how to also use both views for even more flexible music creation.
Live Loops is a "DJ" style creation mode, which uses a grid of loops and samples which can be triggered by tapping them in real time, which is where the name "Live Loops" comes from.
Track view is the more traditional "DAW" (Digital Audio Workstation) style view where you can see all your tracks laid out and can record and edit each track.
GarageBand iOS gives you the ability to use both modes together to create some very cool beats, sounds and songs right on your iPad or iPhone.

I like using Live Loops for putting down loops of my own guitar riffs. I’ve used actual looper pedals but I find Live Loops can be used the same way but you can see where you are, where the loop starts over, etc. instead of the blind nature of physical pedal loops. Add to that all the bonuses of effects, amps, etc., it’s SO much fun as well as great for creating song ideas quickly.
Awesome!! Love hearing this. I really need to explore them more.
man, i love live loops! its a cool new way to try stuff.
Definitely! I'm liking it more and more as I use it, well, more and more! Appreciate your ongoing support Todd. 👍

If you want your tracks from the track view to be in the live loops, you can tap what you recorded and tap copy, and then tap on a blank square in live loops and paste it as a new track in live loops
Nice one! Yes, I need to pull together all of these tips and methods ready for my full tutorial!

I liked this video Pete. If you do some videos on this I think it would be great! I’ve goofed around with this only a little bit. I figured it could work well for song ideas/inspiration. The problem I couldn’t figure out is that the riffs that come out could work for the verse but what about the chord changes for a chorus part. Thanks for all the videos you put out I always watch them all! I remember commenting to you a long time ago when I found your channel how happy I was that I found somebody who was using and teaching about GarageBand for iPad. Thanks!!!
Thanks Tim! Yes, it's been a pretty great journey over the past couple of years and I definitely remember that you were one of the first providing comments way back when I recorded my first EP in GarageBand.
You're right that LIve Loops' biggest issue is that everything is in a very static key and getting variation and chord changes at all can be a challenging thing when you're using loops, especially WAV file loops that are very difficult to change. Now that we have more MIDI loops in GarageBand, I think this might be much more flexible and you can start to build in changes by transposing MIDI loops and creating new loops. I'm right in the middle of the planning process for future videos - just working out whether to do these are smaller bite-sized tutorials, or one "complete guide" to Live Loops.
Pete Johns. Good idea on making chord changes by transposing loops for the chorus. Thanks for that! Just to let you know, I slowed down the number of comments I make because I think you are getting busier and busier with things which is good!!? I still have fun though reading other people’s comments and of course watching your videos! 🎶👍
Pete Johns How is this “complete Live Loops tutorial “ coming along? I’m eager to check it out.

Do you or can you explain how to relate the color of the measures on garage band your videos on RUclips are great.
Thanks. Bob
Hi there. Not 100% sure about your question. Are you asking about why some are blue, green and yellow? These are the different types of tracks. Blue is an audio track (WAV file), green is MIDI (virtual track) and yellow is Drummer.
your videos are so great clear and helpful. thank you!!
Hey, thanks so much Jon. I really appreciate you watching and taking the time to pass on feedback.
you’re welcome! you seem to be so knowledgeable on everything garage band i was wondering if you might be able to answer a question for me regarding irig midi2 if you’re familiar with that as well? i have a Korg minilogue synth with an iphone and irig midi2 and i’m trying to record synth parts into garageband. there are specific synth patches on my minilogue that i want to incorporate into my song but when i play it into garage band, it seems i’m limited to garagebands stock sounds and my synth is basically just serving as a controller for those. is there any way around this? i’m still pretty new to midi. thanks again for everything!
Good question. I don’t use any external MIDI gear so not super experienced but will tell you what I know.
You’re right that MIDI input in GarageBand is only sending the notes, velocity, sustain and bends. Any actual sounds that are part of your external synth won’t be sent to GarageBand via MIDI.
The only way I’ve found is to treat the synth like an analog audio device and connect the line out in to the iPad/iPhone using an interface or even just the onboard mic. You’re obviously going to lose the ability to then edit the notes afterwards which is the major drawback.
I’ll link a video where I show how to do this below and you might also want to check out some Facebook groups such as iPad Musician and GarageBand Users as there are a heap of more knowledgeable folks there too. 👍

Your Big Star t-shirt made me stay and hear what you say :)
Pretty cool isn’t it! 👍🙏🤘
@@PeteJohnsMusic yep, and cool are the videos, thanx!!
Hiya Pete, I'm teaching how to use live loops to my classes of 11 year olds - they are loving it! BUT how do you re-record a song if you want to add tracks to the mix or fx to the tracks. Do I have to start over and add all the loops from scratch again or is there a way to start a new recording?
Hey there. So you can switch between tracks view and Live Loops view and it will keep whatever you’ve recorded already. Maybe check in with the GarageBand Users Facebook group if you need more support. studiolivetoday.com/gbu
Thank you so much because I was confused as hell before I found your video.🦋🎵🎵
Glad to hear it helped.
Hello Pete and really THANK you for all the good works you've done from years about Garageband knowledge.
As I am a totally Garageband iOS composer I already watched your videos about plugin external gears in usb and it works fine.
Now becoming a performer of my compositions I wanted to ask you if you think it would be possible to trigger the liveLoops in Tracks view with an external controller ?
(almost like it's possible in Ableton live but I wish to stay in garage band 🥰)
Waiting for your answer if you think you have one for me, and wishing you all the best !
MIDI keyboards are really only usable for keyboard sounds. I don’t believe they generally work for Live Loops sorry.
Okay thank you for this specific answer Pete !
lmaoo i didnt even know the added literal session view from ableton. so lit
🤘😎
Can you please do a video on how to time stretch samples in GarageBand🙏🏾
YOu can't within GarageBand but can using something like this - ruclips.net/video/VbEzhygQqgw/видео.html
Omg ur a lifesaver I’ve been stuck on loops forever and was too embarrassed to ask my bf
Aweosme. So glad I could help. I hope you get value from the other videos on the channel and consider subscribing if you haven’t already. 👍
Any difference between the iOS version and the Mac version?
Hey Pete. This video was absolutely what I was looking for, can't thank you enough, buddy. BTW, I tried to pull up the piano that you're using, but none of the ones on that keyboard screen or the array they offered via the menu listing matched--and the only bass sounds available with the pianos in the keyboard screen were types of synth and some hollow number. I assume that you have a rather larger selection, correct? Thanks again, my friend.
Hey Greg. What sort of iPad or iPhone are you using there sir? Some of the features like the Alchemy Synth can only be used on newer devices unfortunately.
And glad the videos are helping out. 👍
@@PeteJohnsMusic I'm using the Apple Wi-Fi 32GB, latest model. Your response said "unfortunately." What do you mean? Am I at a real disadvantage with this particular iPad? Thanks, Pete.
@@PeteJohnsMusic Oh, they most certainly are, man. Most definitely!
Sorry, I meant the “unfortunately” if you had an earlier model iPad. Yours should have every different keyboard and sound that I have if you go to “Sound Library” and download all the sounds.
Hi I am yug from India tell me what u think bout my country and by the way ur video was awesome loved it best of luck for ur future
Thank you! I know many wonderful Indian people and adore Indian food. Thanks for taking the time to comment.
Nice voice

Hello mate, thank you for your work ! About Live Loops, can your recordings (vocal, guitar and so on) become a loop on Live Loop ? ,Merci !
Hey there. Yep, they sure can. Check out this great video by my buddy Dan Baker about this very topic - ruclips.net/video/Nulw9jgKD_o/видео.html
I use tracks more because it allows me to get my own beats and riffs
Yup. I’m a big fan of the tracks view.
I’m using the iRig 2 HD, is it possible to use a digital midi controller with those sounds on garage band? Also, how do I copy and past loops on the grid view lol I know it sounds like dumb but I can’t copy and paste loops on the grid view for some reason.
Hey there. You can use your own sounds using the Sampler, but it's a little clunky. Check out some of my videos on the Sampler on the channel. I haven't used loops in Live Loops view much so maybe ask over on the GarageBand Users Facebook group? studiolivetoday.com/gbu.
Cool video, thank very much. A question, Is it possible using GarageBand (with my IRig2) to record a bass line while playing along to an original song as the backing track from my iTunes library. If so, how is this done? Cheers. Niall
Hi Niall. Yes, you can import a song from your iTunes library in to GarageBand using the import features and then overdub a track along with this. It's quite a popular request so I might actually show how to do this in a future video. Until then, here's all about importing the audio - ruclips.net/video/9NwsiCVAh3U/видео.html
Pete Johns Thanks so much. A video sometime on this would be awesome. Cheers
Ayy that wasn’t too bad actually
Haha! Thanks. I do my best. 😎
Thank u for this video I hv to make a rap song and in India in my city there is no electricity so I hv to do it wid my iPad. Thanks again. Whoever watching this comment have a great day 🤟
Nice one. Glad to help.
hi sir
watched all your videos
any idea to create my own aiff loops
Hi there my friend. Yes, you can create loops in GarageBand. Here's some videos which will help you do this - ruclips.net/video/gKYh0wUIKCo/видео.html
And here's how to export your loops as WAV/M4A/AIFF - ruclips.net/video/pr_ZemTL3h0/видео.html
Hey I am having a problem when I am playing a loop I want to make it so it doesn’t stop and create it into small sections I want it to be all one section without stopping. I know I have done this before but I forgot how. So when I play it back it plays the loop, stops and plays it from the beginning again and then stops again how do I make it so it plays all through beginning and end with it to stop stopping!!! I need help!!!
Yes PETE
I am lost slowing tempo like a steprecording for midi keyboard instruments and w/ Chordbot to GarageBand
Since piano is not my main gear but chords pseudo jazz is not so hard for me to play except clumsy fingering.
Guessed it I am a drummer.
👍
Hey! Having fun playing with grid view and loops on the iPad. This question is a little OT, I suppose, but were is grid view on the Mac. I was hoping to have some fun and learn a few things on the iPad, then dive into Garageband on my Mac, but it seems that this view/function is completely unavailable in the Mac version. Any thoughts or info?
Hey Dawn. Yes, but he Live Loops interface is only available on the iOS version o GarageBand, at least right now. I’m now to sure if there’s any plans to bring this to the Mac, as it is quite focused on the touch screen.
Thanks for watching and for your question. Pete.
I'm really trying to put together a 'broadway-type' show and need help with loops & looping techniques
Best of luck my friend. I hope you get value from the other videos on the channel and consider subscribing if you haven’t already. 👍
More GarageBand info here. studiolivetoday.com/GarageBand
How can I play a sequence of chords with live loops? It seems to remain only in on one chord. I’d like the imported live loops to match the chord sequence of my song in the tracks view. Thank you in advance!
Yes, I’ve found this limitation with Live Loops myself, which is why I haven’t used it a heap.
I think you would need a separate live loop for each different chord but haven’t spent the time playing with it just yet to give a definitive answer.
What up Pete Branson mo love you man
Missouri checking in! Hello my friend.
Hey there Pete, how did you get that bass sound on the keyboard?
Hey there. This method works well. ruclips.net/video/42djgYa-9I8/видео.html
Pete how do you unmute vocals tried add vocals but could not and also can’t hear my loop
Not quite sure what you’re asking sorry? Maybe provide some more details and ask over at the GarageBand Users Facebook group. studiolivetoday.com/gbu
Can you program the pads on GarageBand like in an MPC?
Not really sorry.
Hey Pete, when I put some loops in the project and I have cut them, during editing my other tracks, it happens often that a part of a loop change (for example with extra fills) while it is not active. Very strange. But in that case I need to redo all my changes till I am back where I started. That´s realy bad and hard to edit my other tracks. This is my first time that I work with drum loops and maybe I miss some points. It would great if there was a opportunity to protect a track to avoid changes. Any suggestions?
Hey there. Yes, this is unfortunately a part of using the drummer loops, as they actively adjust to the length of each part to try to play a drum part that works for the song. It doesn’t always work out!
There’s no real way to change this apart from actually programming in your own drums.
THe one option you do have is merging the drum track to an audio track and then splitting/cutting it using this method - ruclips.net/video/ZeloBMl4qqU/видео.html
Yes, good option indeed to export and import as audio. Thanks I appreciate
Very welcome my friend. I have started flicking done my drummer tracks using merge for this reason. I move one beer and suddenly my fill is completely different.
Can you create a song with the same loop from start to finish, regardless of chord progression?
Hey there. You can, but it will be the same chord all the way through. Drum loops would be fine.
Hey Pete When I go to the Track section and open up any option it doesn’t show the guitar or drums or piano or anything just the track view and it doesn’t let me do anything also it shows the import button but when i drag it over i can’t place it anywhere..
Odd? It should let you place it at the bottom in a blank track.
Now it worked but I had to get an app that made garage band projects
