So, apart from getting the colour of the V wrong (it does look black though!), my Freddie & Albert Kings the wrong way around & my Schenker brothers mixed up, I thought I did pretty well in this video!! This is what happens when you try & make 5 videos in a day!!!
Also, the Scorps album you're thinking of was "Love At First Sting", the song 'Winds of Change' was on the Crazy World album a few years after. Love me some Scorps! Top video :D
You tried to contain too much rawk!! in one video. The convergence of the Flying Vee and Explorer co-efficients of rawkness caused temporal disturbances in the force and in turn made accurate information dissemination nigh on impossible. Please do not attempt such manoeuvres in future without proper safety equipment .
You guys missed the guy that probably created the most well known guitar solo on the explorer , who both used firebirds and explorers.. Allen Collins, Freebird, lynyrd Skynyrd.. you missed this connection in both your vids.. 😳😁
So Rob had in his hands an Explorer plugged into a Mesa Boogie Mark V, he mentioned James Hetfield, but he didn't played any Metallica riffs? I feel slightly offended by this
Lee I want you to know that I love the banter you guys get into with each other and the crew behind the camera. It's almost like that's more of the reason why I watch than even the review itself. Also the beach balls are hilarious. And exploding coffee.
Flying Vs looks awesome, but I sorta don't like that they force you to sit in the "classical guitar" sitting position. Is it something you get used to pretty fast?
Chris House I bought a Jackson Flying V years ago for about 400 quid, it's sounds better than my Jem! but I can't play it for shit 😂. I think you need to spend quite a bit of time with it, even stood up its not the same, it's as if everything has been moved over to the left by 2 or 3 frets
I changed my sitting position to "classical guitar" on my Les Paul (to make the change from standing to sitting smaller). It felt a bit weird at first but I got used to it really fast. A couple of days. YMMV of course.
Im so used to my LTD V that i have a tough time going back to a more traditional guitar and playing while sitting. I dont think it took me that long to get used to it though
3 pieces is not a lack of quality.. The Explorer is a big body to fill.. There are worse examples of multi piece bodies than this (and this is not even bad..)
Zyx it's blatant and ugly... To me it's a lack of quality. 2 piece body with a nice neat glue line down the middle looks fine... this just looks horrable. I know explorers are big, but I expect better from Gibson
Rudolph Schenker,( Another Flying V Player ) Micheal's Brother was in the Scorpions. Micheal did join for a while and guested on some albums after UJ Roth left. Love the Explorer there....Tottaly Jurassic chord sound!
My Dad has two of those 'The Strat' guitars. Two HM Strats from the same year with the kahler trem, 24 fret (very flat and wide!) neck and the 'Strat' headstock. Both in Turquoise. Really nice guitars.
Michael played on the Scorpion's record LOVEDRIVE as a guest soloist when he about 24 years old and having recently left UFO. His brother Rudolph has been in the band all along. Loved hearing Rob play a bit of "Rock Bottom". The live version on STRANGERS IN THE NIGHT by UFO remains one of the best live double albums ever released. Killer guitar work.
Rudy Schenker was rhythm guitarist in the Scorpions. Michael Schenker was lead guitarist in the 70's but left in 79. Mathias Jabs has been on lead ever since.
Michael was the lead guitarist for the Scorpions 1st album then left to join UFO. He quit UFO and came back in 79 to record the Love Drive album and then quit again to go solo.
I did it. Got a 2014 V120 in Classic white... just a magical guitar. BBPro pups front and rear. The neck pick up is quite simply biblical. Sounds unbelievable in the middle position with a little of the bridge volume rolled off.
Just a little suggestion for the editor, could you leave the stats on the screen for longer so that folks have time to read them all? Like, yeah I could pause or rewind to read them, but I want to hear Rob and The Captain play while I read them. Thanks.
Since there were some comparisons to Fender, there are a few Gibsons that are worth mentioning. I think the closest to a Fender guitar that I can think of is the Victory MVX, which was an uneven double-cut with all 6 tuners one side of the headstock and a HS style configuration (I say style because the middle pickup was actually a stacked humbucker like a Fender noiseless pickup). There was also a HH-configured MV2. Both models featured coil split switches. Lastly, the victory series also had 1 and 2 pickup bass guitars as well. The single pickup Standard model was passive, while the two pickup Artist model had active Moog electronics (similarly to the RD Artist bass). There was also the Corvus series, which had a very unusual shape, and was available as a SSS model (as well as a single and double humbucker models as well). Lastly, there were the S-1 as well as the Marauder. Both of them had Les Paul-ish body shapes with V style headstocks, bolt-on necks, and Bill Lawrence designed pickups. The S-1 had a SSS configuration, while the Marauder had a HH configuration (with the bridge humbucker being a small "blade" model, resembling a larger single-coil in looks). These guitars resembled Fender Stratocasters and Telecasters (or Telecaster Customs in the case of the Marauder) in terms of tone, and I guess people figured that they'd buy a Fender if that's the sound they wanted. Angel Olsen is playing an S-1 these days. I've always wanted to try a lot of these guitars; especially the ones with Bill Lawrence pickups, as they look interesting. I've also really like the Victory MVX since I discovered it, but have never seen one in person.
I definitely love the explorer. IMO, it is almost as versatile as a Les Paul. I feel it just has a natural punch to it. The flying looks lovely, but couldn't tell why it does not catch my breath when plugged-in. Is the flying v still strings-through the body? I remember that was one of the pros that made me doubt over the explorer.
Speaking of new shapes, would you say the 339 is a new shape? I own an Epiphone ES-339 Pro, and although it's a very recent guitar, I think of it as a middle ground between a Les Paul and a 335. I enjoy playing Slash stuff on it, as much as I enjoy playing B. B. King style blues.
Love your videos, guys! I enjoy learning about the guitars and their history and also the stories you tell while sometimes going off in the wrong direction :) thank you for doing what you do!
Great video and awesome playing as usual, but I must say I'm missing Mick and Pete on Acoustic Paradiso big time! Where are they? Can I get my fix soon?
Yes Michael Schenker was in both the Scorpions and UFO. He started with the Scorpions before joining UFO and then did another brief stint with the Scorps.
I’ve had one guitar for years lol I wish I could get a guitar like that! Maybe one year lol have a great new year choppers and the captain!!! You guys are awesome!!!
Answer to the category question you bring up in the beginning of the video--in the past I've seen Gibson documentation that refers to these as "V-Factor" designs.
I became an E-type convert three months ago, thanks to the Schecter E-1 Standard (its neck geometry suits me very well, in stark contrast to Explorers).
Talking about Fender oddities I have an MIJ Fender Telecaster HSS with locking Kahler trem, for some reason I prefer the odd Tele's to the standards, I have also got an MIJ Precision Lyte bass with active pickups.
I always enjoy seeing new Gibson Flying Vs, but why doesn't Gibson make them in satin worn cherry w/ white pickguard anymore? The new ones still look cool, but the satin cherry is my favorite look for a Gibson V. I'm glad I own one, and it's my favorite guitar in my collection, but they don't make them like that now.
I thought the colour of this year's flying V was red, at least that's the info given by gibson at first, weird. Compared to the HP from 2017, do you notice any big difference?
I think gisbon called them first the "modernistic" line... There were originally 3 of them : Flying V, explorer and Moderne. And two (maybe all three but no proof) were presented at NAMM 1957. Correct me if this is wrong...
It is a Duesenberg Les Trem 2... Check it out here www.andertons.co.uk/p/TM85N/guitar-parts/duesenberg-les-trem-ii-in-nickel-retrofit-trem-fortune-o-matic And Danish Pete has done a installation video over on his channel...
Hey would you guys be so kind as to post a snap shot of Rob's settings on that Mark V 35. I have a Mark V and would like test run some other tones and settings.
LOL I was thinking of the Fender HM Strat right before Lee mentioned it. I personally think those guitars were really cool and underrated. Definitely fit the times of the late 80's and early 90's.
there were three guitars that gibson made in that series it was the v and another goofy shaped guitar, i forget the name but i think the series was called the future series it was gibson trying to be like wierd with their shapes, i own an explorer and i find that the shape is actually comfortable
Just saying but I would buy the shit out of a Captain-Chappers Blues Rock album
Fully agree. Maybe someday they will do it just for us..
exactly
And of course "Snow Falcon" as a bonus track :))
Had this exact same thought. They could call it Chapters.
Captian's Chapters :D:D:D
Finally got this explorer after 10+ years of wanting one since I started playing. Idk how anyone could dislike the shape! Gorgeous.
So, apart from getting the colour of the V wrong (it does look black though!), my Freddie & Albert Kings the wrong way around & my Schenker brothers mixed up, I thought I did pretty well in this video!! This is what happens when you try & make 5 videos in a day!!!
weeee ..... lol

So Rob had in his hands an Explorer plugged into a Mesa Boogie Mark V, he mentioned James Hetfield, but he didn't played any Metallica riffs? I feel slightly offended by this
João Sérgio well since he didn't have an all white or black and white explorer.. I'm kinda olay with that
But he should've played some
Should have plugged in a AC30 instead hahahhahaha
Kotow Boy Rob can DEFINITELY play Metallica riffs. The captain tho... I dont think so.
yeah they both should have played at least ONE song by Metallica since both James and Kirk played Explorers and V for a long time
why dont you guys do a podcast where you can talk about guitars and other stuff? People would watch/listen to that
HM Strats are amazing.
E- Claudio Sanchez
V- Michael Schenker
Lee I want you to know that I love the banter you guys get into with each other and the crew behind the camera. It's almost like that's more of the reason why I watch than even the review itself. Also the beach balls are hilarious. And exploding coffee.
Explorer player: Skwisgaar Skwigelf, taller than a tree.
Flying V player: Toki Wartooth, not a bumblebee.
Beat me to it lol.
The explorer on black would be perfect
slorr55 there's a black version, dont worry!!!
The 2019 B-2 Explorer comes in black and it will be less than 900 US dollars. :)))))
we got a hetfield fan ;)
Jonathan Bowman reading this is funny now :)
RED
Cmon, you said Scorpions. How can we forget Matthias Jabs for his unique Explorers. Infact Gibson had made him custom Explorer 90 during the 80's..
Theirs actually one for sale on my local Buy and sell... For a cool $5000
Yep, Mathias Jabs is so under-rated !
Allen Collins late of Skynyrd too
Not Freddie King. Albert King! :)
Love Albert.
That bothered the hell out of me. Both are great.
As a Flying V owner, they are one of the most comfortable guitars to play sat down.
Love the Explorer, looks so classy!
They are the same spec guitar with a different body 😂
Fluro Flash I mean, they're spec'd the same as some Les Pauls too. Nothing wrong about that.
Thinking about it, even in 1959 when tehy were originally introduced, they were basically same guitars but with different shape, right?
Yeah. I just thought it was funny how similar they are
what were you expecting?
The were introduced in 1958.
I wish they made a Flamed Tobacco burst explorer or V
Oh God yes. I'd sell my kidney to get one...

Im so used to my LTD V that i have a tough time going back to a more traditional guitar and playing while sitting. I dont think it took me that long to get used to it though
It’s closer to the position it sits in when your standing so probably a better idea to practice in the classical position if your sitting down.
that is because the V is meant to be played while standing up! Standing it is super fun and easy to play
Great to have the fun back in the videos a bit more. Funny edits too. Cheers fellas
Well there's a surprise...the gorgeous Gibson gig bag isn't on the website......
Not a fan of the way you can clearly see the explorer is a 3pc body. A 2pc would've been better...
ion 53 and probably an excuse to shoot the price up $500
Jacob Reece If I'm paying £1199 a guitar company in debt should have no excuses for lack of quality
ion 53 umm yeah the excuse is it's a Gibson 😂
3 pieces is not a lack of quality.. The Explorer is a big body to fill.. There are worse examples of multi piece bodies than this (and this is not even bad..)
Zyx it's blatant and ugly... To me it's a lack of quality. 2 piece body with a nice neat glue line down the middle looks fine... this just looks horrable. I know explorers are big, but I expect better from Gibson
Thanks for the little bit of Rock Bottom, you made an old man very happy!
Made this 29 year old very happy too. Love that song!
Rudolph Schenker,( Another Flying V Player ) Micheal's Brother was in the Scorpions. Micheal did join for a while and guested on some albums after UJ Roth left. Love the Explorer there....Tottaly Jurassic chord sound!
What in tarnation? Chappers and the Captain aren't using Victory Amps for once? Is this even an Anderton's video?
My Dad has two of those 'The Strat' guitars. Two HM Strats from the same year with the kahler trem, 24 fret (very flat and wide!) neck and the 'Strat' headstock. Both in Turquoise. Really nice guitars.
Anyone gonna talk about that at 4:15

Just bought my second guitar. A Explorer 2017 HP EB.
Im excited like a little kid before Christmas!
Extra great video today boys! Look forward to it every day.
Rudy Schenker was rhythm guitarist in the Scorpions. Michael Schenker was lead guitarist in the 70's but left in 79. Mathias Jabs has been on lead ever since.
Is rhythm guitarist*
Michael was the lead guitarist for the Scorpions 1st album then left to join UFO. He quit UFO and came back in 79 to record the Love Drive album and then quit again to go solo.
Lynard Skynard's Allen Collins played the solo to Freebird on a Explorer
Never been a big explorer fan. the shape doesn't appeal to me. I'd buy a V for blues though. Albert King and Hendrix to the max!!!
I did it. Got a 2014 V120 in Classic white... just a magical guitar. BBPro pups front and rear. The neck pick up is quite simply biblical. Sounds unbelievable in the middle position with a little of the bridge volume rolled off.
Marcus Hogan - The appeal doesn't shape to me, but I like it.
And Jimmy Page! For one song, You Shook Me from Led Zeppelin I.
Little known fact too! Also these days Joe Bonamassa is rocking not one but two original 58 Vs!!!!!!!!!!
Judas Priest KK Downing used a V as did Dave Mustaine of Megadeath so tons of hard rock metal besides blues
Man, Rob's airdrumming-skills are on point. It's like I could actually hear it.
dude i cant get over the subtle editing on these videos
You guys are becoming as exciting as ever......
I have the 2006 gold hardware Explorer re-issue and it came with the 496R/500T pickups which I absolutely love.
How do you guys not know Gibson calls these guitars the "modernist" series? (1:22)
I've always associated the "color" for a Flying V as a natural Korina. Long Live Albert King!
Just a little suggestion for the editor, could you leave the stats on the screen for longer so that folks have time to read them all? Like, yeah I could pause or rewind to read them, but I want to hear Rob and The Captain play while I read them. Thanks.
I like the explorer best 🎸🙌🔥

Will you do a Memphis rundown aswell? Cant wait
Where can i buy this awesome strap ?? 7:58
Lee stole it from Santana 😂
Andertons
www.amazon.co.uk/UK-made-Electric-Adjustable-Length-Guitar/dp/B00AC4T78U/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1506430027&sr=8-8&keywords=black+and+white+guitar+strap
it's an original fuzz or a dunlop.
I definitely love the explorer. IMO, it is almost as versatile as a Les Paul. I feel it just has a natural punch to it. I enjoy all the tangents!~! The tones are so much more fluid when you guys stand it up.
07:10 best moment ever... the ball!
I have to say Captain Lee, that Explorer at the beginning of the video does look fantastic on you.
Adding the specs on the screen is a great touch guys. Can you add settings on amps and pedals for "sound like" in a similar fashion please?
another great video from the captain and the chappers. i love the explorer, i have never been that keen on the v.
Love your videos, guys! I enjoy learning about the guitars and their history and also the stories you tell while sometimes going off in the wrong direction :) thank you for doing what you do!
9:15 , Wonder if theres an Ugh Stick classic 2018 model with Burst Bucker pros?
Yes!!! Exploding mugs are back!! Really nice straight into amp tones 🎸🎼.
Would love to see a review of the Gibson 2018 Memphis guitars from you guys!
Great video and awesome playing as usual, but I must say I'm missing Mick and Pete on Acoustic Paradiso big time! Where are they? Can I get my fix soon?
Around 8:00 was the rhythm to lees solo an AC/DC song? It sounded like What Do You Do For Money Honey
Yes Michael Schenker was in both the Scorpions and UFO. He started with the Scorpions before joining UFO and then did another brief stint with the Scorps.
Randy Rhoads on the V.
His V's weren't Gibsons though.
I never realized that. He had that Les Paul so I thought the polka dot one was a Gibson too. Thanks for the enlightenment.
@@auduneggen4847 they were Jackson's right?
I’ve had one guitar for years lol I wish I could get a guitar like that! Maybe one year lol have a great new year choppers and the captain!!! You guys are awesome!!!
Rudi Schenker is the flying v player who has been in The Scorpions throughout their career. Michael was in only very briefly in the early days!
Rudolph Shenker was in the Scorpions with Mathias Jabbs Michael was solo and UFO.
Does Gibson not have ANY EBONY fretboards any longer? I know the issues with rosewood but no one is talking about the ebony boards. I love ebony.
They both sound incredible. The Marshall amp Lee's using is kicking. Great tone.
Maybe not the most famous ones, but the ones I immediately thought of:
E - Allen Collins
V - Albert King
Answer to the category question you bring up in the beginning of the video--in the past I've seen Gibson documentation that refers to these as "V-Factor" designs.
Cap is playing in standing position?! Now that's outside of his comfort zone.
Mike was in scorpions, Albert king played a V as well, all I had was Hetfield playing an explorer.
I'm shocked no one has mentioned Claudio Sanchez of Coheed and Cambria. He's a legend and plays Explorers!
My dad has an HM strat.... rob should bring it in and do a video on it
Claudio Sanchez and Brendon Small, not the most famous explorer players but they made me love them
Since you were talking about "New" guitar shapes, how about a review of the D"Angelico Ludlow.
Does Dave Mustaine counts as Flying V player, even with Jackson and Dean Vs (which are bit different shape). Or Randy Rhoads?
I became an E-type convert three months ago, thanks to the Schecter E-1 Standard (its neck geometry suits me very well, in stark contrast to Explorers).
Bill Keliher!
Kelly Clarkson!
R Kelly!
Are you going to change that rooster shelf to the dog shelf in the 2018?
I thought the colour of this year's flying V was red, at least that's the info given by gibson at first, weird. Compared to the HP from 2017, do you notice any big difference?
I think gisbon called them first the "modernistic" line... There were originally 3 of them : Flying V, explorer and Moderne. And two (maybe all three but no proof) were presented at NAMM 1957. Correct me if this is wrong...
Bloody Gooch. :P The thing that makes me HAPPY is that they FINALLY issued left handed versions of these this year.
You guys should check out the story in Deke Dickerson's book about a possible Moderne prototype out of the factory in 58.
These two guitars are awesome ! I own a 2018 Gibson Explorer and my next buy will be the Flying V. Both available as lefty.
I love u guys i watch your videos for : 10% info
40% guitar playing
60% the talking so funy so intresting ❤
Thought you were about to do a sounds like Scorpions with the explorer and V Jabs and Schenker
This guitars are sick!
Not sure if I'm a fan of the Burstbuckers though.....
Love at first sting. Rudy schenker, also... Tommy Shaw and Mathias Jabs (hilariously also of the Scorps) played explorers
Do these come with the case or is that sold separately?
Hey guys. Off topic, but what trem system on that red 335 in the background of all your videos?
Great video, as always - cheers, bob
It is a Duesenberg Les Trem 2... Check it out here www.andertons.co.uk/p/TM85N/guitar-parts/duesenberg-les-trem-ii-in-nickel-retrofit-trem-fortune-o-matic And Danish Pete has done a installation video over on his channel...
What happened to the dirty fingers pickups and the V in white. I was wanting one of those.
I like the little edits, great video
@ 16:18 Rock Bottom by UFO . . . needs to be played on that Flying V... but it still sounds awesome..
Great vid fellas. Love the Big Breakfast reference. More gobby behind the camera interjections. S'all good. :)
Hey would you guys be so kind as to post a snap shot of Rob's settings on that Mark V 35. I have a Mark V and would like test run some other tones and settings.
Will part 6 be on Gibson ES 335/hollowbody range?
explorer: Allen Collins, Lynyrd Skynyrd
flying v: Dave Rude, Tesla
Question on the explorer - What is the neck thickness like? What could I go to a guitar store and play that would have a similar neck profile
I'm not sure, but this may be the best video you've ever done. Albert King by the way.
@4:14 what happened to the mug?
LOL I was thinking of the Fender HM Strat right before Lee mentioned it. I personally think those guitars were really cool and underrated. Definitely fit the times of the late 80's and early 90's.

I know I'm late on this, but y'all didn't say Lonnie Mack when you were talking about famous V players.
Great video! Hope to see more Fender, Squier and Epiphone!!!
