This is part 1 of 6 videos coming where we go through the 2018 USA range. By the way, all Gibson guitars are USA made, but for some reason, the core line of Les Pauls, SGs, Firebirds, Explorers & Vs is always referred to as the USA line. The Memphis range (semi-acoustics), the Montana range (acoustics) & Custom Shop range are all made in the USA, but Gibson just give those ranges different names. Confused - so are we, but its been that way for a long time!
Rob is playing through a Mesa Boogie Mark V:35 with no pedals & Lee is using a Marshall 2525 Jubilee head & is using a Xotic EP Booster and a Dunlop Mini Wah in the front, and an MXR Carbon Copy & Boss Reverb in the loop.
Next up is the Les Paul Classic vs the Studio - stay tuned!
Cheers!
Lee & Rob

I went for a Traditional...…..bloody stonkingly beautiful guitar.
@@Havanacuba1985 Yes it is a slim neck and a light body as well on mine.
I also went for the Traditional, chunky neck, heavy body and just stunning to look at. In 35 years of playing, it's the BEST instrument I've ever owned.
I've got a Traditional too in iced tea. I always pause to look at it a while before picking it up.
Thank you guys for using other amps than Victory!!!
Victory can't hold a candle to the Mesa Boogie.
egregion - I know I immediately noticed a difference. It was like a punch in the face from what I was expecting. It sounds a lot like Jerry Cantrell
egregion I disagree.
0:45 Don't think we missed that, Chappers.
No Stairway
Really hard not to play when you hold a les
NOOOOO!!!!
You've been warned Chappers!
I like where Gibson has gone. I hear people always complaining on the forums. I don't know what they expect Gibson to do? Build a company around your taste specifically? If you want a Traditional LP...here it is. Good as ever...if you want to see where Gibson is going with the modern electronics and tuners...here it is.
This is the one video I look forward to above all others every year
My hat is off to the editor you have way to much fun editing these videos
These guitars are so well made and beautiful. Love my 2018 Trad in honey burst finish. The trad is the real LP imo, based on the very sought after 1959 model. No fluff and gimmicky stuff. No weight relief. Just pure craftsmanship with huge sound and great playability.
2018 Les Paul Standards going new for 1800 GBP now. Nearly a grand less than the 2019. I just got one in Mojave burst. Sooooooperb.
I remember watching your videos for about 4 years now I think. And Lee became such a killer guitar player in that time!!
I have the exact 2018 Traditional in this video. I bought it used as the original owner couldn't take the weight of the guitar. I love it, absolutely love it. I have had to do some equalization on my settings to get the right tone out of my setup with the burstbuckers, but once dialed in.... uhmmm delicious sounding. Best hard rock guitar I own and the sustain is RIDICULOUS. Last when sitting on the couch noodling, you can feel every note resonate through that thick solid wood!
I find it hard to believe the neck is on the "thinner side" like they claim in the video. I was seeing nearly 1inch all the way from the 1st to 12th fret for most online sources. What say you, good sir?! Hope you still have it!
@@wretchedrider So no I do not feel as it is on the thinner side, though I do have guitars with rounder neck profiles. The feel and grip is amazing so if it is slightly thinner, I do not notice it. It is in my top 2 of guitars and is a main instrument for any gigs. I did replace the neck humbucker as I play heavier rock and metal and the Burstbucker was just too muddy for my liking, even with the volume turned down. So yes I still have it and will likely be buried with it LOL.
The Captain has really upped his chops!! Has come a long way from 2015 Les Paul videos. Kuddos Cap!!
The Traditional Pro V is probably my favorite Les Paul of all time. Crazy amount of customization options like a modern, but in a traditional Les Paul body.
Very pleased to see you didn't use Victory amps on this, both the MKV and the Marshall sounded superb.
whoever edits all these videos is a beautiful person
That mojave burst is simply stunning.
oh yeah!!! the traditional Gibson line up!!!

FUCK YES FOR THE EDITING OF THE HP SAUCE
Oh boy, I really don’t get that hole Gibson - especially Gibson Les Paul - hate cult. What’s the problem with the guitars, really? Yes, they are expensive. I managed to own 3 Les Pauls, one Tokai and two Gibsons, and I’m nowhere near to being rich, I just saved up for them. Are they too expensive? I don’t know, and I don’t really care. I see a guitar, I like it, I love it, I need to own it. Then I start saving up for it. In the very moment I buy it, I don’t think a second about how much money I hand the good man/woman from the music store in exchange for that guitar, I am just so happy I am finally able to take that Baby home!
And after that the price tag doesn’t matter as well, a 2000 bucks guitar gets played the same way as a cheap Chinese one, I mean wtf, it’s not going to break?! Also one might say, that Chinese guitars are just as good as American made guitars. Yes, maybe they are, and if you are happy with your far eastern guitar, good for you sir, go create some nice music with it! But what is the consequence here? Just because they are fine and more affordable, other guitars than those made in Asia aren’t allowed to exist, leaving thousands of people in the instrument making industry unemployed? Well that seems to be fair…
Another thing that I read and hear a lot is that Fender guitars are also American made and much cheaper, yeah well, I think you would agree that screwing two pieces of wood together and building a Les Paul Standard with glued on Neck and Top, plus the Binding and multi-colour finish do differ just a little bit in the time that you have to put into making it. Yes dudes, I know, I’m exaggerating, but you get the point.
“Gibson is total crap, the quality is everything except good, and their guitars won’t stay in tune at all!” Well, I don’t get that, either. I don’t claim to have played thousands and thousands of Gibson guitars, but I do own two, and played some more in music shops, from friends and whatever. Not one of them was falling apart. Maybe I am just lucky, happy me. “But there is a tiny imperfection in the finish where the neck meets the body!” You really do give a shit, don’t ya? Maybe I am just a fool, but I really don’t. The guitars are handmade, stuff happens… And the thing with tuning stability, I really don’t see that as well. I change my strings every three months or so, and when I do, I stretch them properly. Of course a Les Paul is not like a Floyd Rose guitar, but it’s not like I start a song at bandrehearsal in E standard and after the first song the strings are Like F# F C A A Eb. I don’t know what all of you with those popular Gibson horror stories do to your guitars, but mine stay in tune just fine. I don’t know about the Custom Shop, but all Gibson USA guitars are set up with the PLEK system anyway, so if the Setup on your Gibson sucks, I’m sorry for you dude, really am, but who’s to blame here, really? And if your crappy set up guitar slipped through the quality control (which obviously doesn’t exist over at Gibson, I forgot), just bring it back, someone will fix it, for free.
Lots of talking, all I’m trying to say here really is, if you don’t like Gibson, it’s fine man, if your Epiphone is just as good great man, go buy some nice stuff with that 2000 bucks you saved! But please, just don’t be a dick and stop trying to make me feel like a moron for loving my Les Pauls. So many great players can’t be wrong, but yeah, what do I know, right?
Have a nice one, dudes and dudettes!
smokester preach!!
Yep LOVE my Les Paul 2016!!!
Lots of people (myself including) think that they are too expencive for what they're worth. If they were handmade I would gladly play 2-3k but not for these.
Also the decisions they have made are a bit nuts. I mean direct mounted pickups, that pinks burst that's not even finished, robot tuners? Who thought they were a good idea? Most people want to buy a traditional looking and feeling Les Paul but they're not making them. That leaves some people unsatisfied.
Well you don't have to get a high performance model. I'm not the biggest fan of those either. And that's just by the looks, as I haven't tried one yet. But I do think, that the neck joint is a really good idea, so I definetly will try one some day. But you can just get a Traditional, or a Classic. Also, over here in Germany Gibsons seem to be not quite as expensive as in the UK. And you can always get Models from previous years for good deals. I bought a 2014 Les Paul Signature in 2015 for under 1200€, took the robot tuning system off, sold it for 80 bucks and bought Klusons for 60, so that didn't work out too bad. Even today you can easily get a 2016 Trad. or Std for way under 2000€, and I think if you wait a couple of weeks, it's the same for the 2017 models.
You might be right, that there are competitors in the same 2-3k pricerange out there, that build their guitars with a little higher attention to detail, but in terms of tone, a Gibson Les Paul is absolutely competitive to any guitar. It's not the best tone, because there is no such thing, but it's a great tone!
Agreed. Love my LPs.
the comments are funny....Guys who are making 9.25/hr, saying they hate Gibson.......so funny., Gibson makes the best looking guitars ever, save up fellas and stop being haters.
Hey i make 20hr. And sell pedals n shit i build on the side. And can only buy one nice guitar a year. Like high end. Usually a new guitar and amp. Altho im building handwired amps now for wayy less
@ROBBY Amen.
They went bankrupt for a reason bud
Wow, great playing at around the 2:10 mark Captain! He doesn't open up enough with his playing. He actually has great talent for flowing with the riffs
2018 is my year! I'm going to fulfil my dream and get this beautiful Traditional!
Can't wait to get my Les Paul Traditional!
Thanks for another great video guys! Keep on rockin!
Hi Lee - sorry to hear about the shoulder. I have been suffering the same over the past few months. I may well have caused it with bad guitar playing posture whilst sitting. I ended up visibly bent out of shape with my right shoulder noticeably lower than my left. This led to very bad neuralgia all down my right arm, with intense pain in the arm and numbness in my hand. Playing guitar has become impossible, and driving is very difficult. Anything that involves lifting my forearm, to strum or pick a guitar, or to hold a steering wheel, will bring it on. I had to have an injection in my shoulder to relieve the pain there, just to allow my to sleep, but it did nothing for the neuralgia in the arm. I have had x-rays and extensive ostoepathic treatments, and I still have a long way to go. Don't try to ignore it, and get it properly treated, or it can seriously bugger you up!
Nigel Williams lee better check that I have 2 frozen shoulders and it affected my guitar playing wrist n hand. He lifts heavy things a lot. I've seen in past videos.
Marc Stanford frozen?
I know too well what you're in, the same goes for me. Two injections as well but I still can play, it requires more effort for sure (the worst if you ask me is to put a coat on or off, the most painful move).
I was about to buy a standard. So glad I saw this video guys. Bc the traditional is what I want.
Just bought a les Paul traditional from Anderson’s and I can not wait to get on it
BRING BACK GOLDTOPS!!!
I'm a Boogie guy so this is totally biased, but you should use Boogie a little more often Rob. Sounded great!
UniqueSquared I guess we can say that you are a...boogie man
That's a killer rig!
+Kelly Fawcett I hope to get a Mark V 25 next year, to pair with a 4x8 cab.
Cant wait to get myself a 2018 Dora the Explorer
AllKeys JamTracks Just wait in th border
That Boogie with the Gibson guitars sounds awesome! And of course a great guitarist, way to go Rob :)
I watch your videos, because they're so much fun to watch. Keep up the great work. Thank you for a great channel.
The Traditional reminds me of one I had in '74. It was called tobacco sunburst. The 2018 looks and sounds great.
👍🏻 Good for Gibson offering something for everyone. Great playing & banter, guys, I love Anderton's videos!
can we all just start celebrating new year when the new Les Pauls get out? makes more sense to me
The editing in these videos is class
I'm amazed Rob didn't bring up Chapman Guitars.
Great explanation of the Model features and differences guys...thanks. It really helped me and made my decision easier to buy the new 2018 standard. I’ll always remember Rob’s rye smile when I go to the blow switch :)
Do the Gibson 2018 Flying V please! :)
omg! that traditional clean nearly brought tears to my eyes!
Making love to my Gibson Les Paul cherry burst traditional while watching this, an absolute amazing guitar and tones!
Can't get used to a les Paul without the bit around the pickup selector.
Thanks for the astute observation, Mr Ed
I like it. It harkens a bit back to the original 52 les paul.
I quite like the look of the poker chip thing on the pickup selector.
Editing just gets better on these videos!
Captain getting better by the week. Sounds like improvisation now instead of a string of licks. Good job.
Legend has it, Robs been using that same bend since his first ever guitar lesson and was born with that note imprinted on his left buttcheek
Great lead guitar Lee, surely time for another of the Capt Anderton lessons so you can show us all how it's done!
Finally using a mesa!!!! About time !
The video editing always gets me
One of Rob's tastiest licks is at 24:19 (made possible by captain's impeccable sense of timing to pause)
Next year's (2018) Traditional looks great. I got a 2016 and absolutely loved it, resembles in feel to my 58 and 59 Custom Shop Historics except that it has an asymmetrical fat neck. It feels great!
I do like Gibsons, own a Les Paul myself - but here (I'm in Germany), there are luthiers who will build you a carved top single-cut to exactly your specs for 1500 - 2000 €. Of course, if you're into exotic extras, you might end up paying multiples of that. It's custom shop and it has the charm that you know who you're giving the money to.
I really like my lp standard hp... I own a 2003 Strat Deluxe a 19 78 Telecaster Deluxe and a 2000 Les Paul special in TV yellow. I played a lot of guitars and I have to say I really love the new feel of the Gibson Les Paul Standard they sound great and I love playing mine. I had some setup issues when I first got it but I took it to the dealer I bought it from and they set it up for free which is pretty standard. Now she plays like butter... people can hate on Gibson's because they buy a cheap American-made model then compare it to I'm more higher end of another brand and really there's no comparison.
It's Gibson month! Yay! Tis the most wonderful time of the year.
Particularly like the product placement at 2.02 in the video. A strategic stratocaster! 😀👍🎸🤘🏻
I got a 2018 Anaconda Burst traditional that came with the exact seymore duncans that went into the 2017 custom shop Anaconda R8 & R9s
Their discussion at the start about people wanting a similar guitar as their heros back in the day is the main reason why I bought a Traditional back in 2012........ I've got a hell of alot of quality guitars but my 2012 Les Paul Traditional is my baby.........
Finally :D i've been waiting so long for this video. Thank you Thank you Thank you!!
Forget these two, that les paul behind Rob looks gorgeous
Ain't gonna lie - that new Mojave Burst color looks so good.
There is nothing better than that great Gibson sound. Maybe it would be better for us to make a decision on which guitars we want to buy if you didnt use pedals on any of them you review and demonstrate.
Capt getting very slick with his playing and licks. I want the turtle shirt. Looks great.
Great video guys - appreciate you going in depth on the whole line. Same with Fender & PRS. Guitars are one of the only things I can think of where aficionados slam the great iconic brands. Car lovers typically don't slam Ferrari or Carroll Shelby and then claim the Yugo is just as good. When most serious players get a new guitar I think it's expected you're dropping a grand or 3 (or more). If not now, then down the road when you can save up that much. Would like to see some jazz hollow body and nylon guitar love, although know the demand is way smaller...love you guys.
This will be a good year for Gibson, they look and sound spectacular.
Yay for the first new les paul review that I watch owning a les paul.
Clever idea with the specs. Well done!
The LP into the boogie sounds incredible.
Bought a "signature T" model about 2 or 3 years ago for £1,200ish and its all the Les Paul I need. Glad I did now seeing the prices coming out. £2.5K is too much for a "standard" guitar. OK if it's bling'd up or a limited run, but thats a huge increase over the last few years. I don't know how much the studio will be, but it's been moving further away from the "no frills" concept. Gutted because I LOVE les Pauls...
Ha anyone noticed that at the 4:32 mark, there is a very quick, 4-frame, edit where the guy on the right has a pair of sun glasses added to his face? It's quick, so look for it carefully. Is that a normal thing with these videos?
HPs are brilliant, I wouldn't go backwards by eliminating them. Glad I got a classic HP when I did. I agree with @Rob, more is more.
Thumbs up for the edits and the beach ball
Coil split guys !
Coli tap is on single coils, when you engage additional coils to fatten the sound !
You can get coil split on hummbuckers or, if you want to be humm free, serial/parallel,
There is no coil tap on hummbuckers.
I have played lots of Les Pauls. Mostly an early 80s Standard. They are all good. They all sound a little different but you can get the sound you want. All that being said, over the last couple years I have sort of become a Tele guy. The longer scale is easier for me plus just something about it seems more lively. But all good
I think this is the first time I love the look of the Traditional rather than the Standard.
I have both a 2018 Standard and a 2016 Traditional with some mods done by the previous owner, a friend of mine, whose a tech. Theyre different feeling necks (50's on the Traditional, Slim Taper on the Standard) but both awesome and have their own thing going on. I cant see me ever getting rid of either of them.
Lee with Les Paul ... best guitar tones in this corner of universe ...
1:50 is why I love this channel
Maybe the video shoudn't be called "Les Paul Trad VS Les Paul Std" just because you guys are not putting it against each other to see which sounds best etc. Maybe it should be called "Les Paul Trad & Les Paul Std 2018". Great video, dudes. Thanks!
Especially loved Robs soloing at 7:10, jam was going places :D
Rebecca Dirks! She was great - hilarious interview with Satchel
I think an easy way to explain the whole "Standard" thing is to compare it to the Fender American Standard Stratocaster, which while it's the icon, it's also updated to modern standards. Fender lets some of the custom shop models or even the Mexican Standard take the place of the "classic" Strat.
Love lees playing when he's got a Les Paul in his hands
I think I am alone in this: First time in a loooooong time that I actually not only like, but love the sound of the guitars' sound in this channel, from the get go I was kicked in my face with a great sounding tone. Second: Both guitars look just great and tasty. Now I want one. And I would like to know what amp are using both guys (and cabinet and miking). I loved all the video. Extra: Even though the left one attracts my attention more at first glance, at a second and third look the one to the right at the end of the day feels more appealing. Looks fantastic. I want to eat it :P
Edit: Ok, now I clicked on the show more button, now I know what amps and stuff they used. Stellar tone both.
Got the Standard and really enjoy the coil tap. Gibson did it very nice. More nuanced than than others. Recording quality tone, not thin.
You should do some Hagstrom coverage. They have churned out quite a number of interesting guitars during the last couple of years.
Do you think in 30 or 40 years there will be another year that is considered legendary like a 58/59? Guys in the future paying 60K because it was a 2018! Or, as guitar players do you think we are too stuck in a rut to let that happen?
I think that will never happen. For many reasons.
Those guitars are so valuable both because they are good but importantly because they were not made in the volumes we see today, so rarity would play a part
I honestly dont think so.
Especially seeing as Gibson has been slacking in terms of QC and just keeping up with the times.
I might be totally wrong though, no one knows.
I think that the Traditional HP they mentioned that didnt sell terribly well would be worth a pretty penny some time in the future
Ray Torvalds unless the electric guitar makes a come back I doubt it would happen and mainstream music just doesn't feature lead guitar like in the 50s,60s,70s,80, and 90s.
I disagree with if you like old classic players you have to choose the traditional. Lp traditional: thick tone, neck like baseball bat.Lp standard: nice balanced tone, many tone options due to split coils and tone knobs. Beautiful thin neck- so comfortable to play and looks amazing. But I have to agree that Andertons Guildford is the best music shop with any new guitar you can imagine!
Don't apologize! I'm in the market for a les paul, so I'm finding this very useful.
Lee's playing got much better recently!
I'd appreciate it if Gibson stopped with the updates and instead worked on quality control issues. I've had to replace two separate Les Pauls for different issues (binding coming apart, bent neck, dinged up body, etc.)
What you experienced is quite not what all other buyers did. Nobody should so widely generalize over the entire range of this or that brand.
Love these reviews. I've always wanted a traditional.
Very cool, guys!
I would love to see some of the new SG's especially the Ebony with Gold hardware!
I know these guitars are kind of dated, but I have yet to find a good review on them. A really cool guitar series are the fender Jim Root sigs. It'd be cool to see a demo on it. Keppe up the great work guys! Love from Philly
Dylan \m/ philly the major city with zero guitar stores. Within center city.
Nice reveiw! You two are great.
2017 Trad HP is an awesome guitar. No holes in it, so great tone and great variety of tones with access heel and superb neck. I think its sound is richer than the Std HP and playability is better than the trads. Too bad they decided not to continue the Trad HP line.
I love the sound and looks of a Les Paul Standard. What’s not to like?
Got the HP Standard last year. Looks like a Gibson, sounds like a Gibson, shreds like a mo...fu...er. LOVE IT.
i'm totally loving what hewlett packard did to the les paul
So that's the actual difference in how Gibson treats Standard (innovations) and Traditional (the original standard tribute kind of guitar) - that helps!
They should implement the all access neck heel on every guitar on any range. That's something that does not affect the tone or stability at all, and can't think of anyone that's going to complain. Also it should have been done since 1954 or so.
Also add a fucking volute on the headstock and do multi piece necks.
Remember you've gotta suffer for your art Grasshopper! It's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog! It is what it is and so it shall remain!!! ; )
RicardoDiazHimself I would complain
Smelling my Gibson Les Paul Standard while watching this...caressing and next its time to read her a good night fairy tale...
Gibson's "entry" Les Paul, the Tribute, is a fantastic guitar that nails the tone and vibe but comes without the bells and whistles. I love mine, and for less than a grand it's hard to complain about the pricing.
I would love a Standard, but it is a bit pricier than I'd like to pay. But again, there are other options for a proper Gibson :)
